I met this strange guy today – he was my auto driver who was a former bank clerk and an ex-army man. Out of the blue, as we left in the direction of my office, he asked if I minded chatting while he drove. I said, “Sure. What was it that you had in mind?”
Somehow the conversation moved to the fact that I am an Atheist and that, in answer to his question, in moments of great despair I never called out to (a fake and non-existent) God. I gave him a couple of examples from my recent years. From what he said, I concluded that, although he does not believe in idol worship, he believes that there is a supreme being.
The conversation moved on to Christianity and Judas. He asked me, if God is all knowing and if God is so powerful (I am rolling my eyes), and if everything is his doing, then did he not have a hand in Judas’s betrayal of Jesus (who is supposed to be the son of God and God himself)? Hence, why should Christians hate Judas and why is he infamous as the ultimate betrayer & sinner?
Yeah! Why is he? And how did he betray Jesus? By a kiss to identify him to the Roman soldiers. Here is what bother’s me – Jesus was quite well known, he went on preaching and saving humans. Everyone knew who he was, he went along with his disciples and many other of his devotees and so there should be no doubt as to his identity. So why condemn him?
I have always thought of the character Judas as a tragic figure. I mean all you christians have just denounced the poor fellow, even made him to be Dracula (in the movie Dracula 2000) and the ultimate traitor. In response we have : the metal band Judas Priest & “Judas My Guide” by Iron Maiden. I think Judas wins here :)
Song for the day – “Judas Rising” – JUDAS PRIEST
