Luke joins the Senators

watch near dark online Veteran defenceman Luke Richardson joins the Ottawa Senators on a 1 year contract. Luke @ 38 is past his prime and it was thought that he would retire after last season, his 19th in the NHL, having played on 27 games last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Luke is a former captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets and has also played for Tampa, the Edmonton Oilers, the Philadelphia Flyers & Ottawa’s hated rivals the Toronto Maple Leafs. He started his career as a Maple Leaf, being drafted by them in the first round (seventh overall) of the 1987 NHL entry draft. But this is the first time he will be playing for his hometown team (he was born & raised in Ottawa). Halfway through his rookie season, on January 6, 1988 he was the victim of a vicious attack when Dino Ciccarelli of the Minnesota North Stars clubbed him in the head several times with his stick (Ciccarelli was convicted of assault, serving one day in jail and paying a fine of $1000). He has played the 3rd most games among active players in the NHL, only trailing Chris Chelios and Brendan Shanahan. As well, he is the active player who has played the most games without winning the Stanley Cup, or even reaching the Stanley Cup Finals. The closest he came to a Cup Finals appearance was in 2000, when the Flyers lost 4-3 in the Eastern Conference Finals to the New Jersey Devils.
