Coffee, Croissants And Reading A Book
A nice way to de-stress after the working week is to relax with a good book and some coffee at one of your local coffeeshops. I prefer cold coffees & frappes to hot since a) I can make hot coffee at home & b) we live in a hot nation/state. I enjoyed a soft & wonderful croissant with my frappe as I read my book while trying to ignore the crappy music playing on the stereo and the couple near me who seemed to intent on displaying their affection in public.
After having caught an eyeful of a babe’s tight jeans-encased round buttocks (I am such a pervert I know), I heard a man’s loud & angry protests. Turns out that, a couple of tables away, a man had come in with his two young sons (I would put them at the between 12-8 year age bracket) to meet an acquaintance and drink coffee. I had earlier noticed that the two boys were a bit annoyingly loud as well.
Well, back to the incident, the man was irate that the he was brought three huge cold frappes by the staff – the guy claimed that he hadn’t ordered them. The staff said that one of his sons had done so. The man shouted that he had heard his son only ask for water and why would they bring some pricey coffees to him. He said that his son couldn’t even pronounce those coffees ordered. He said that their service was becoming worse day by day and that he would complain to their owner or manager or whomever.

How My Company Fucked My Life!
It’s the same story with some details changed. But in a nutshell, I got screwed by my company yet again. 11 months ago, I got promoted as the Training Team Leader; which basically meant that I managed the daily activities of the training depart, the training for the call center and the trainers themselves. And although I was happy with the promotion, I got no increase in pay. I was told by the HR that it would be atleast 6 months.
Yet I asked the training DGM for a hike. She said September 2008. The month came and went and no salary hike. I was patient. I waited till December when I told her, during a conversation that we had on something else, that I thought I deserved one and that she should do something about it. She cried ‘recession’ said that I derserved one and that she was gunning for promoting me to be promoted as a Assistant Manager. I said fine but what about a pay hike. She said that she couldn’t manage both but that she would try.
I waited and nothing happened as January came & went. March flew by and so did April. And then May – a day after I was back from my vacation, I got the mail that stated that, among others, I was also promoted to the post of AM. I was happy and felt that I had done something and that I was a somebody. They said that the promotion/grade change was effective from April 1st. Funny! I had been an AM for a month and 11 days and I didn’t know it.
Now, my salary hasn’t changed at all. The May salary has fallen into my account and I still haven’t got a hike for my two promotions. They say that it is defferred till October, which actually means November. Which means that I would be going through two whole quarters, 6 fucking months, of getting promoted and not getting a hike. A hike that is so fucking delayed, which I deserve and am not getting!
I hate this fucking company. And they want more work, more results, more productivity, more initiatives, more efficiency – more fucking blood from me and people like me so that upper management can sit and drink it while lounging around in luxuries hotels! Managers, DGMS & above won’t think of staying in another location if it isn’t the finest hotels, with the most expensive & over-priced food and drinks. And they travel in planes! The nerve of these mother fucking bastards!
Can’t find another job, can’t find another job, can’t find another job! Pitiful situation! And if one more tells me that god will find you a way, I’ll tell you where your fucking god can go and shove his way. Up his father fucking asshole!

The Man From Earth
A stunning storyline, great acting and a couple of twists that will shock you! That’s Jerome Bigsby’s The Man From Earth, an intellectual Sci-fi movie based solely on the conversations of it’s handful of characters sitting in the living room of a small house and in the porch.
The movie is about Professor John Oldman David Lee Smith) who is packing up and leaving his job & home behind while moving to a new location. His colleagues show up to give him an unexpected farewell party: Harry (John Billingsley, a biologist); Edith (Ellen Crawford, a fellow professor and devout Christian); Dan (Tony Todd, an anthropologist); Art Jenkins (William Katt), an archeologist, and his student Linda Murphy (Alexis Thorpe) and Sandy (Annika Peterson), a historian who is in love with John. Dr Will Gruber an elderly psychologist also joins them a little later.
What follows is an intriguing conversation as John reveals himself to be a Cro-Magnon man, who has been living for 14000 years. Every 10 years he moves to another destination as people start to observe that he isn’t aging. John resumes his story by stating that he was once a Sumerian for 2000 years, then a Babylonian under Hammurabi, and finally a disciple of Gautama Buddha and a friend of Vincent Van Gogh.
But the killer is how he blasts the myth of Jesus Christ (Christians may not like watching this movie but us rationalists will get a kick out of it) in such a manner that it’s mind-blowing. The movie ends on a further twist, althought it’s more of a personal one for Dr. Gruber and the man is devasted by the revelation. It’s worth watching the movie for just these two scenes. They are that powerful!
After Jerome Bixby’s death the script was given to Richard Schenkman to direct on a $200,000 budget. The screenplay for this movie was conceived by Jerome Bixby in the early 1960s and was completed on his death bed in April 1998, making it his final piece of work. Chilling With Drinks & Squid
Clients releasing newer & newer softwares & applications are a pain in the neck. Clients releasing newer & newer softwares & applications often are a pain in the ass. Clients releasing newer & newer softwares & applications which don’t work properly in our office premises is an kick in the scrotum!
Dealing with all that rubbish is hard work. I guess that was part of the reason that the interim manager (who currently manages both Kerala & Tamil Nadu processes for Quality & Training) decided that he wants to spend some time with my counterpart in the Quality department, Leslie and myself outside of the office in a casual setting. So went went to his room at Park Residency (excellent view out the window) at around 3:30 pm and ordered some drinks and some food to chill out and relax.
We ordered Signature whiskey, Smirnoff vodka, seven up, 2 plates of squid roast, chicken 65, battered prawns (dipped in koos-koos) and peanuts. It was a good decision as Leslie & I aren’t really comfortable with this guy but the guard may have lowered down a bit and it was enjoyable. Leslie & I walked a bit and then took an auto to HMT jn. I then took a bus back home.
Lemon Exchanged For A…….
I think my dvd problems are over. I went last evening to Chase IT Systems in Bay Pride Mall on Marine Drive. I had called them a few days back to tell them that I was facing issues with the Enter external dvd writer/player that I had bought from them on the 5th of this month.
I got there a little after 7:30 pm and they tested the drive out as I explained the problems. I was ready to pay a little extra and get an LG or Samsung model (after they knock off the price for the one I had already bought) but they didn’t have any on stock. Since I wasn’t ready to wait till Monday, they gave me another Enter dvd player and told me to use it for a few days and see if the problem persists (maybe it’s a faulty batch sent in from the manufactures or the brand itself is fucked up).
I said ok and took home a new one. It seems to be working fine and I can access files in dvds pretty well now. I’ll wait and see for a couple of days if any issues creep up before deciding to stick with this one.

Reboot The World
Reboot, reboot! That’s all tv series & movies are doing nowadays. They don’t want to come out and say that they don’t have any new ideas or that all the good ones have been done – they just claim “reboot”!
What is reboot? “Reboot, in serial fiction, means a discarding of much or even all previous continuity in the series, to start anew. Effectively, all previously-known fictive history is declared by the writer(s) to be null and void, or at least irrelevant to the current storyline, and the series starts over.”
I can understand remaking old black & white movies or tv series. To a certain extent remaking or rebooting works. Mission Impossible for example. Batman worked. Battlestar Galactica worked, for some reasons, but it is quite different from the original series (and I love the original series). Superman – well, I’m still not decided on that one! The Incredible Hulk seems to work. The new movie, Star Trek XI, rebooting the original gang, looks like being the granddaddy of them all and looks to be a huge success.

I started this blog post as I had read that they were thinking of rebooting Buffy The Vampire Slayer as a darker reboot! And they are planning to launch the movie without Joss Whedon at the helm and sans the supporting groups of Willow, Giles, Xander etc.

Bought A Lemon!
I had purchased an external DVD writer/player earlier this month, while I was on my leave/vacation. The one I bought was a Enter hi-speed USB 2.0 DVD write. It is a dud.
I hadn’t heard of this company before and should not have gone for it but was enticed by the price tag, which at Rs.3.2 k was the lowest I could find in that store. Hind-sight being 20/20, I should have opted for another one from a company I was certain about, like Samsung.
The Enter DVD writer keeps getting stuck while playing DVDs and it will not allow you to burn a DVD properly. I have tried buring 6 dvds and they all fell flat.. Furthermore, whne you plan a dvd it gets stuck in between! And you cannot copy files from a dvd into your computer – it gets stuck!
I called the store back on Monday and told them that I would be back in a couple of days since I wanted either a refund of a replacement. They have agreed over the phone but I plan on getting a better make or model even if I have to spend a 1000 bucksmore. This is ridiculous.

Goodbye Newcastle & Middlesborough
So Newcastle United & Middlesborough both get relegated. It was a sad Sunday for the English game. Newcastle is steeped in tradition and memorable moments. Just a few years ago Allan Shearer and his boys were competing in the Champions League. Now they will face the lower rung teams (I’m not putting them down but United are in different league). And the sad part will be that they will be forced to sell off their best players due to the reduce in revenue.
Same goes for Middlesborough; although their club might not be as storied as Newcastles. I have seen some exciting Boro matches but the majority have been of a duller & slower paced nature. Nevertheless, I will miss them too. I hope the return back for both teams will be in a year’s time.

Dylan’s Birthday Rings Out In Shillong
Yesterday was Bob Dylan’s 68th birthday. And although he was a long way from the city of Shillong, in the small Indian state of Meghalaya, the fanfare & celebration were strong. For the past 38 years, the city has celebrated the birthday of the philosopher-musician legend. Hundreds of his fans poured into a sports club and enjoyed the musical performances of Dylan’s songs covered by local artists, with school students & out of state performers joining in as well. Shillong’s own Lou Majaw, singer / guitarist of Meghalaya band The Great Society, initiated the birthday celebration back in 1972.
Majaw, 63, has used Dylan’s songs as an inspiration and his idea was to spread the works of Dylan as much as he can. A North-East Indian music legend in his own right, Majaw’s initial 1972 Dylan birthday bash was in front of just 30-40 people. Now it’s almost an entire city with a healthy dose of outsiders as well.
Do Or Die For Newcastle, Boro & Sunderland
I watch English Premier League matches on a regular basis and as much as I am a die hard Arsenal supporter, I am not oblivious to the charms of some of the other wonderful football clubs in England. Or in Spain, Italy, Germany & Holland for that matter. But due to many reasons, I’ve been able to follow the English league in more depth than the others. So it saddens me to know that two clubs with a rich history & colourful players & fans – Newcastle United & Middlesborough – might get relegated after the final round of games tonight. I’m also including another club, Sunderland, who happen to be local rivals of the aforementioned two.
I myself can’t imagine anything more English than having a pint or two at the pub with your mates and then heading over to watch late afternoon/evening football matches. Imagine the disappointment for the fans of these clubs if they do go down and get relegated. Sunderland have the advantage as, due to superior goal difference, they will get relegated only if both Boro & Newcastle do win tonight. With 36 points at the moment, Sunderland were tipped by many at the start of the season to go immediately. The departure of Roy Keane before Christmas didn’t help stability and, having spent most of the year in lower mid-table, they would consider themselves unlucky to be relegated.
What can I say about Newcastle United? Traditionally a big club with massive local support, not long ago they were in the Champions League. This season they have suffered from local favourite Kevin Keegan being out of favour with the owner and leaving in September. Joe Kinnear took after as coach after Keegan’s departure and seemed to be an able replacement, until heart trouble in February brought an end to his term. Messiah & former star captain Alan Shearer came on board with just 8 games left. The club have big name stars like Michael Owen & Mark Viduka but have failed to build on their success in the first half of the decade.

But come January it all started going downhill for them. Speculation over the future of Stewart Downing didn’t help, but the decision to stick with inexperience coach (and former captain) Gareth Southgate could be the one that hurts them. It will be a shame of Newcastle goes down and I would miss them. Boro too but Sunderland have been a bit boring the years that I have seen them. Nonetheless, these clubs have character & history and they have enviable fan bases.

So That’s What 6pm Looks Like!
After what seems like an eternity, but in reality is probably only a few months, I stepped out of the office at 6pm today evening. I usually work from 10am-7pm and leave usually after 7:30 or 8pm. On Saturdays I like to leave early but usually it’s after 6:45 or 7 pm.
Today I had made it a point to reach the office by 9 am as I wanted to leave the office atleast by 6pm in order to make it to the Tweetup in Marine Drive. I completed all work till then and left the office about a couple of minutes after 6 pm. And I was surprised!
It was bright and clear. The sky was blue with just a hint of the sun going down. It felt like a nice day and certainly not like it was winding down. So this is what 6pm looks like! Nice
Hanging Out @ #Cochin #Tweetup
Well I finally did it. I attended a community thing after all. Me, who has avoided or tried to avoid functions, get-togethers, reunions and any such public gatherings where there are more than 2-3 people other than myself.
Even though I wanted to be there on time, work intervened and I was able to reach there around only around 7pm. There was a traffic block from Edapally till Kaloor that didn’t help either. Anyway, I reached Bay Pride Mall and went to the back area and stepped into Barista Cafe. I didn’t see them at first but as I looked to my left, huddled around 2 laptops, were the rest of the Cochin Tweeters.
I didn’t know many people by face – just @kenneyjacob, @roshinroy & @binnyva since I had seen their pics in either their profile pics or their blogs. And it was Binny who came up to me and confirmed that yes it was indeed me – countroshculla. I met & got introduced to all the guys and it was fun to chat around. Binny and I exchange dvds – I gave him a copy of Star Trek Voyager Season 1 and he gave me a copy of Season 4.
All the dudes were nice, lounging about and having a variety of cold coffees. I ordered a Raspberry Ice Tea and shivered near the ac duct. Man it was quite cold in that corner. I think I froze my sperm!
We sat there till about 8:45 pm, took a few pictures and shook hands. I hope to join up every Tweetup in Cochin city, responsibilities at work permiting ofcourse. I didn’t know that it would be this fun. Thanks guys for all the tips on how to select a laptop!
