The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here – Alice In Chains

It’s been such a long time since I did a musical album review but I just have to get back to it. Ok, let’s start with a release from May of this year. The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is Seattle giants Alice In Chains’ 5th full length studio album and the second album following the reunion post the length layoff post former singer Layne Staley’s death. It is also the second album to feature Wiliam DuWall on lead vocals & rhythm guitar. The album peaked at #2 on the US billboard charts and did well in most countries.

The album starts off with Hollow with that familiar grungy guitar style of riff and patent AiC harmony vocals with DuWall & Jerry Cantrell singing the lyrics. Pretty Done follows a familiar style although not as hard, and lyrically it’s about people who give up everything else to chase a dream. Once they get it they have to be careful as others are waiting to take it from them and the singer will not be around to be used. Stone is about an antagonistic relationship featuring lyrics like “What makes you want to carve your initials in me? Rained and weathered, erasing, hard to read
Find me distant, outwardly rough, obscene, Cold dry stone”. With some acoustic & electric guitars interchanging, Voices is an instantly hummable and memorable song and is surely a stand out in the album. It’s an introspective look at oneself and that just resonates well with most listeners.¬†“The devil put dinosaurs here / Jesus don’t like a queer / No problem with faith / Just fear,” which appear in the title track, tells us what AiC think about the religious explanations which tend to be mixed with politics in the US. “I am wise and you don’t know, A cloud is my home, Only some get in, Got a ‘maginary friend.”

Lab Monkey is about being used for other’s purposes and gains. Low Ceiling is making fun at a wanna be big shot who’s ego is bigger than anything else he has ever done. It is stated that the song is aimed at particular music critics. I like the guitar solo a lot on this one. Breath On A Window is about the long travels on the road. Scalpel, a track that’s a bit slower, is about broken dreams. Phantom Limb back with double harmonies is about getting the due that you deserve when you have done way too much shit that trouble is imminent. Hung On A Hook is about your reflections showing you a side of you that you’ve tried to hide away from. But sometimes a cracked mirror shows the real you. Saying a goodbye or a farewell is what Choke is about. Pride and wrong decisions have let you to this path and now it’s closing around you.

The cover artwork features the skull of a Triceratops with a second skull image steganographically hidden on a red background. The two skulls, when revealed, combine to form the image of the Devil. The album title refers to a belief held by some religious individuals that to confuse the masses of humanity, Satan himself planted dinosaur bones deep into the Earth to dissuade the faithful. The veteran rock band has given us a solid and memorable album that will still proudly in the same shelf as their best. Here is the video for The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here.

An Embarrassing Childhood Memory

Describe an embarrassing childhood memory.

This was when I was 5 years old or perhaps 6. I know it was in Kindergarten or first grade that much I do know. It’s almost a faded memory but bits of it still remain in my brain and refuses to leave me. It is embarrassing but I was such a young child and I can be excused this little mishap.

So I was in school, in class and in the middle of the session after the recess I felt my tummy startling to rumble with that familiar feeling. I remember that morning I couldn’t go do my business and my mom tried to get me to drink hot milk saying that I needed to go before I left for school but I just couldn’t do it. And now I was paying the price. I tried to get the teacher’s attention but she was otherwise occupied and so after a little while I left the class and headed the long way to the bathroom. Unfortunately by the time I got there I had pooped in my pants! Two girls, slightly older saw me and were laughing as I took my clothes off and stepped into the loo. The school had maids on each floor and one of the ladies came to my rescue after scolding the girls. She made sure that I was washed completely and she washed my school uniform as best as she could and put them in a plastic bag. She then found a bathrobe, since I was naked, that was only slightly bigger than my size and made me wear it and sent me back to class.

Imagine the look of surprise of my teachers and my classmates when I came back to class in a bright, orange bathrobe and sat down in my place. The maid told my teacher what had happened. I got into the school bus and met my older sister and told her what happened. Also – my mother must have had the shock of her life when she saw her son in that bathrobe – “Where, what, how?” – but yes we managed to recover from this traumatizing episode! :P

Winter Thoughts In Tropical Kerala

As most of the Western world – and some countries like Egypt in the Middle East – are “enjoying” their snow fall, this guy who has never experienced snow is melancholy about the subject. Well, not true! As I have stated earlier I have seen snow and felt it in my hands but I was wee baby, just 2 years old back in 1978 when my family went to England (Newcastle in particular) to see my mom’s sister and her family who were living there at the time. Now I have no memory of the snow of the cold and how it felt so it’s as good as not having experienced it all. It’s 35 years later after all!

Now during the first 11 years of my life I lived in Kuwait and even though we got no snow, we did get a winter season. It got cold enough for people to wear winter clothes, a concept that would be alien in tropical Kerala which is my home state. The women would wear sweaters and coats or jackets and woolen leggings. The men would wear long woolen socks, sweaters, vests and thick coats. As kids I remember my school uniform – woolen underwear like pants, over which went the pants, a vest, a sweater and a coat. I would be roasted in my own juices if I wore that and walked around for 30 minutes in Kerala in December/January. It’s not that hot but it certainly is not cold!

I wouldn’t mind some snow. What’s life like without 4 distinct seasons?

From direcor Robert Schwentke, based on the comic book Rest In Peace Department by Peter M. Lenkov and published by Dark Horse Entertainment comes the supernatural buddy cop movie R.I.P.D starring Ryan Reynolds & Jeff Bridges with the villain role played by Kevin Bacon. Mary-Louise Parker, Stephanie Szostak, James Hong & Marisa Miller play the supporting roles. The movie is a lot like MIB and while watching it, one gets the feeling of having seen it already.

So the story goes like this; Boston PD detectives and partners Nick Walker (Reynolds) and Bobby Hayes (Bacon) steal some gold (mostly on Bobby’s insistence) that they found during a drugs bust. Nick however feels bad about it and wants to clear his conscience, so he decides to bury it first and then tell Bobby that he doesn’t want to keep it. During a subsequent raid on a warehouse that day, Nick and Hayes get into a shootout with the criminals inside, and Hayes kills Nick to prevent him from returning the gold. Nick finds himself walking as a spirit while the rest of the world seems to stand still and he is then pulled to limbo in the afterlife, pulled through a whirlpool towards the sky and meets Mildred Proctor – director of the Boston division of the Rest In Peace Department (R.I.P.D.). Proctor tells him that RIPD is¬† an agency that recruits deceased police officers to patrol the afterlife and capture “deados”; spirits that failed to cross over and instead stay on Earth as monsters. Nick is given an offer to serve for the RIPD for a 100 years after which he will be given a final judgement (since right now things are not in his favour) and meets his new partner Roy Pulsipher (Bridges) – a crusty ex-U.S. Marshal who lived in the 1800s and who has not moved on due to his actions.

Nick & Roy return to earth in different avatars – Nick is an elderly Chinese man while Roy is a hot blonde Russian woman – and attend Nick’s funeral where Nick cannot stay away from his wife now grieving widow Julia. However she is upset when he tries to contact her and Bobby has some officers escort him away. Roy & Nick head to a suspect Stanley Nawlicki, who transforms from his avatar into his monster form via¬†cumin¬†powder. There is a scene where Stanley is revolted each time Nick, reading from a set of cards, says the name of an Indian dish (chicken tikka masala, saag paneer etc) which contains cumin. Nawlicki tries to escape, resulting in Roy pushing Nick out of a 20-story building, and is eventually killed by Roy using a soul-killer bullet that erases him from the cosmos. Pieces of gold identical to the ones Nick stole are found in Nawlicki’s possession, and logged into evidence. They then meet with Roy’s informant Elliot who they dupe into naming his contact – Bobby. Nick and Roy follow him to Nick’s old house, where Hayes retrieves Nick’s share of the gold, leading Julia to believe that Nick was corrupt. After a brief confrontation between Roy and Nick over the stolen gold, they tail Hayes to a bus depot where he gives the gold to a large ginger-sideburned deado named Pulaski. Confronted by the detectives Pulaski reverts to his huge, mosterous true form and the chase causes much damage to property and is caught on the news.

Proctor is infuriated and they are suspended and taken off the case by The Eternals (who are in charge of limbo), while Proctor tells them they are likely to be erased. However the two decided to continue investigating and find that the gold pieces¬†are components of the Staff of Jericho, a mystical device that could reverse the tunnel that transports the dead into the afterlife, returning them to Earth.¬† They then arrest Bobby, who reveals his true form, and take him to RIPD headquarters. ¬†Hayes and some other deados manage to escape by using a device Hayes had smuggled in that slows time for the R.I.P.D. officers, but not the deados. After stealing the components of the Staff of Jericho they return to Earth and set the activation in motion, with Bobby capturing Julia as his hostage. In a showdown Roy & Nick kill off all the deados and finally Bobby but are unable to save Julia who Bobby kills and has her blood used for the sacrifice needed to set the Staff in motion. Although Nick manages to kill Hayes, Julia succumbs to her wounds and she and Nick share a tearful goodbye. But Proctor revives Julia in the hospital and begins recovery, granted a second chance as a favor to Nick. She also reinstates Nick, who is let off with a warning, and Roy, who gets 53 more years added to his already extended time in R.I.P.D. Knowing that Nick is unhappy with his avatar, Roy pulls some strings to give him a new one – much to Nick’s disappointment it turns out to be that of a ten-year-old¬†girl scout.

While I can’t find fault with the story, the end result is a harried, rushed and unconvincing plot that doesn’t get the time it requires to settled in the minds of the audience. Hence – badly performing film gets lots of negative flack from the critics and most of the public. he film has been labeled a¬†box office bomb, with the opening weekend bringing in less than 10% of the film’s $130 million production budget. On a budget of $130 million, the movie made $78.3 in return. It’s not all bad as there are some funny moments but not enough to save this mess. 6 outta 10!

Galactica 1980

After Battlestar Galactica was cancelled in 1979 after just one season (and just as they were getting really good) the infuriated fans started a massive write-in campaign in favor of restoring the show. Back then this was unheard of and it prompted¬†ABC¬†to re-think their reasons for canceling the show. After some deliberation, they contacted¬†Glen A. Larson¬†to see about reviving the series, albeit in some modified and less-expensive format. That was almost as good as not bringing it back again, because from a ground breaking scifi tv show that spawned a memorable franchise, the show was reduced to a low budget, heavily tamed and bad tv show (compared to what it was) called Galactica 1980. At times called the “worst tv show ever”, rather harshly I must add, the spinoff injected a lot of humour into the show mainly because they were being shown at an early time and a lot of kids would be watching it.

Larson & Donald Bellisario set about looking at ways to work with the lower budget and they had to settled for cutting out most of the cast and setting it 30 years after the events of the final episode of BSG. From what I know they tried to set it at 5 years after the previous show ended but couldn’t get all the actors that they wanted back. Hence only Lorne Greene as Commander Adama & Herb Jefferson, Jr.¬†as Boomer return; the later now promoted to second in command as the Colonel replacing Col. Tigh. No explanations were given as to what happened to Apollo, Athena, Cassiopeia, Tigh and any of the other main characters or recurring stars. We assume that they all died in battle with the Cylons along with Count Baltar. Poor Boomer, who was the 4th main male lead was reduced even further to a recurring role in Galactica 1980 appearing in only 3 episodes.¬† So 30 years later, with many deaths among the humans in space, they finally reach earth but find her technology not advaced enough to help the Galacticans or defend themselves from the Cylons. Adama decides to keep the fleet away from earth so as not to alert the Cylons to the location and sends small groups of warriors covertly to the¬†planet¬†to work incognito with various members of the scientific community, hoping to advance Earth’s technology. The creators decided to make Boxey, now called Troy a captain just like his father Apollo, as the main lead along with Lt Dillon (played by Ket McCord & Barry Van Dyke respectively) and the show focuses on their efforts to settle a group of young children on earth and form a colony. They would be joined by human reporter Jamie Hamilton (my first tv crush Robyn Douglass) and the main protagonist would be Cmd Xavier, a rogue Galactican who wants to use time travel to go to earth’s past and influence & speed up our technological advancements. There is also Doctor Zee a genius & mysterious child prodigy who advices Adama on various matters.

In¬† the 3 part episode Troy & Dillon are sent to Los Angeles where they try to meet an earth scientist Dr. Mortinson, a nuclear physicist at the Pacific Institute of Technology. They are however mistaken for being terrorists and are arrested and get tangled with a reporter Jamie Hamilton. They must evade the local police as well as the US military, who tracked some “UFOs” movement in the area. Meanwhile Xavier who also meet Mortinson and get some information that he needs from him. Jamie finds out who the Troy & Dillon really are and to avoid the cops they must take her with them on their vipers to the Galactica. Initially stunned with all this revelation about aliens who are really earth human’s cousins, she agrees to join the duo in earth’s past, back in Nazi German and using the help of an American major, they stop Xavier’s plan to accelerate the¬†Nazi¬†rocket program (as theirs was the most advanced rocket program of the time). Unfortunately Xavier, using his personal shiled that makes him invisible, escapes from the trio once they are back in 1980. Troy & Dillon later put Jamie back on a bus and ride their flight capable bikes back to the field where they left the bikes only to find that the military has found them when the shield’s battery ran out the ships became visible. Xavier’s ship is also found and¬† the two get Jamie’s help to sneak into the military base and steal their ships back. They are unable to stop Xavier from escaping with his ship and head back to the Galactica.

In the next episodes the two main men must bring a group of kids to earth where they disguise them as a Scouts group of orphans and along with Jaime must also help the kid when they fall sick due to chemicals in the water. Ridiculously in episode 6 the kids use their superhuman strengths as ringers in a baseball game while Xavier plots their abduction. In the double episode The Night The Cylons landed, a special Cylon raider crashes on earth finding the planet by chance and in it were the latest Cylon experiment РCylons that look and talk like humans! Troy & Dillon reach the crash near the NYC area but are unable to stop a surviving humanoid Cylon and a Centurian from getting away. The Cylons are mistaken for Halloween participants and are taken to a party where they find out that they are near a a radio station and they force Wolfman Jack (played by himself) to the station and use the Emergency Broadcasting System for their transmission to alert the location of earth to the rest of th Cylon fleet. Troy and Dillon are able to reach them just in time and stop the signal from being sent and the two Cylons are destroyed. In episode 9, Troy & Dillon buy part of a farm from a Hispanic farmer in financial trouble.  They then get Jamie to bring the Galactican children to help the farmer & his family by using their advanced strength in planting the crops and the using their technology to create rain which enables the plants to grow quicker. Then some of the people from the fleet are quickly moved to the land to help grow more crops for the fleet.

That was the last we saw of the major part of the cast and of earth in the final episode we come to learn what happened to Starbuck and how his “spiritual child” Doctor Zee was sent out in a small pod to meet up with the rest of the fleet when still a baby. It is funny that the worst of the BSG series, has the very best, sad and most memorable episode ever. Based much like Enemy Mine (unsure of if the episode was influenced by the book) this is a great episode. You can read by post on that episode here. Thus ends the promise of a great show started in 1978 and ended up mostly as a joke with crappy cheesy stories and humour in Galactica 1980 which ended with just 10 episodes. However the show is nostalgic and establishes a few good points like the Humanoid Cylons which would be put to great use and fleshed out in the rebooted universe.

On Kids & Family

mindbump suggested by Living Off Script

“If you don’t have kids and could do it over, would you have them? If you do have kids and could do it over, would you not have them?”

I do not have kids. I do not have a wife and I’ve never been married. I do not have a girlfriend and haven’t had one in quite a few years. When I was younger I thought I’d have kids by this age – 2 girls and a boy. The girls would be twins. Later the dream became 2 kids, fraternal twins; a boy and a girl. Ofcourse with a hot wife with whom I would have these kids. Over the years I lost that image of what a family I would want to have. More and more I couldn’t see myself as a father. I don’t hate kids, I like kids alright. Some kids are very cute and when they are well behaved as well they are just awesome and awe inspiring. I love seeing cute pics of babies just as much as the next guy or woman and there are a couple of small kids of my cousins & friends who I absolutely adore as well as some kids of my Facebook friends.

By the time I turned 30, I knew that I just didn’t want to have kids. I do not see myself as a parent and would not want any kids. I still want to have a family – in that I want to find the love of my life and marry her and adopt a couple of dogs and cats. I see that as the perfect image of what I want as a family for me – loving wife, 2 doting dogs and 2 crazy cats who ignore you until it’s feeding time or they want to be petted <3 :D. A nice house, nothing too big or fancy but spacious and comfortable. That would be all that I’d want. And if I ever do get the inclination to be a parent, adoption would be the way to go. Like I always say, there are millions of kids who don’t have a family and are in need of one. We should try and give them a family and a home before making new babies.

So that’s what I think.

Star Trek: TOS Women 16 & 17

No, you are not seeing double and no you are not drunk. After all, I did title it as TOS Women 16 & 17! Yes, it’s two women for this entry and it’s special because they are twin sisters.

Episode 12 of Season 2 I, Mudd sees an android named Norman, disguised as a starfleet officer, making his way onto the USS Enterprise after having forged his records and arranging the transfer. The powerful android is too much for the human officers and he jams the controls after changing their heading – the destination is a ¬†planet which has never been charted. Once there Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura & Chekov are forced to beam down to the planet where they meet the ruler of that planet – Harry Mudd! Mudd is surrounded by androids, who for the most part are a slew of beauties ‚Äď 500 in the¬†Alice¬†class alone. He implies that these androids can provide for him anything he wants. Mudd goes on to explain his presence on the planet and tells them that he had been sent to prison by Kirk and company after his last appearance. After his escape, he had been employing himself by illegally reselling patents. He was caught and sentenced to death on¬†Deneb V; fortunately for him he was able to steal a ship and get away. After drifting aimlessly for a while, he found himself on his planet. The problem is, of course, that he has gotten bored, and the androids won’t let him go. Kirk and his crewmates are there because he told the androids to go and get a starship, so the crew could stay and he could leave. He declares that Kirk must stay for the rest of his life on the planet, now also named¬†Mudd, along with the rest of his crew in order for him to go free.

The androids then reveal their plan: to “serve” Humans until they will become completely dependent upon the androids. They refuse to let Harry leave and intend to keep the entire crew there as well. In a hilarious scheme, the Enterprise crew realize that they must use insane logic to get the better of the android and confuse them. The more confused an android get, unable to comprehend the insane logic, they will eventually short circuit and shutdown letting the humans a chance to leave the planet. Elsewhere, Spock tries to¬†nerve pinch¬†another Alice, but it has no effect. He then causes two other Alice androids to freeze up by telling one he loves her, but the other he hates her. The androids can’t deal with this, as they are identical ‚Äď it is illogical to love one and not the other :). Finally all¬† the android and Normal, the leader, is shutdown and reprogrammed from the main system so¬† that the crew are allowed to leave. However Mudd is paroled on the planet – he will be safe as the androids will provide for his every need but Kirk & crew reset the android that resembles Harry’s wife and create many more of her which will harass and annoy him for th duration of his stay on the planet.

The¬†Alice series¬†was a group of five hundred identical¬†androids¬†who inhabited the¬†planet¬†Mudd. They were designed according to¬†Harry Mudd’s “exacting” specifications, and was the primary liaison between the vast¬†android¬†population and the crew of the¬†USS¬†Enterprise. Playing the parts of the pretty Alice series of androids are twin sister Alyce & Rhae Andrece. Alyce is the first pic and Rhae the second.¬†Show Creator/Producer Gene Roddenberry had been in a panic because he needed at least two female identical twins and couldn’t find any. That night, while driving home, he saw the Andrece twins walking down a street. Roddenberry literally pulled over beside them, jumped out of his car and told them that they were going to be on television. Alyce & Rhae had brief careers as actresses; their only other apperances were in an episode each of Bonanza,¬†Batman, and in the 1970 film¬†Hell’s Bloody Devils. The sisters also performed as singers in a band called The Third Eye in an episode of¬†The Name of the Game. They were also singers in a jazz-pop group of the late 1960s called The Sound of Feeling.

Both sisters have passed away. Alyce died in 2005 aged 68 and Rhaw died in 2009 aged 72.

They Said Goodbye

‚ÄúThey sat shoulder to shoulder on the beach, willing the sunset to last just one second longer‚Ķ‚ÄĚ

Having waited for so many years to see each other they still had just until darkness falls to be together. Despite all his efforts and her hoping for the outcome that they both wanted so much, it had all come down to this. She was to leave with her family at noon the next day to a city so far away and so foreign to both of them. She couldn’t say no and stay back; her father having just recovered from a heart attack a few months ago had now got a good job, one that would be less stressful and taxing on him and the money that he would make would be even better than anything he had ever made in his entire life. To support her father’s decision, her mother had decided to uproot her small but successful business and already setup shop in the new city along with a relative of theirs. Her mother had moved most of her belongings in advance and the oldest son had joined her a week earlier. She and her younger sister & brother stayed back with their father. All of the previous month her father would keep saying that this was a bright new start for their family and that they could put all their troubles behind them in this coastal town which had brought a lot of bad things to them as a family. Besides she was only turning 17.

Each time he said that and the two younger children nodded in agreement, unaware of the turmoil that was going through their sister’s mind as the family sat down for dinner and while the other 3 ate with gusto and talked about their day with smiles, she was busy with her thoughts. Yes, it was a great move for her family and her dad in particular. But she didn’t hate the town; in fact she loved the place and she loved the ocean breeze. Leaving the town would mean leaving behind everything she loved including –¬† him. She remembered the day they both met 2 years ago, in History class. They both shared a passion for the classes and loved to discuss and debate about events from history and the great wars. They argued about kings & queens and civilizations and some where between a debate on The French Revolution and a reading of a new book, they fell in love. It was first love for both of the 15 year olds and they fell hard. Although they didn’t believe it, they would joke that the were lovers from a distant era reincarnated and destined to be together again and will always be together for generations to come. Her favourite time was after school when both of them would say goodbye to their friends and walk to the fast food place near the ocean and order milkshakes and talk to each other for a couple of hours.

But now that was all about to end. She should be back home, the house her family would call home for just a few more hours, and finish her packing. She was almost done and then she’d have to check and see if her younger siblings hadn’t forgotten any of their belongings that needed to be packed and then sit down with them and her father for that last dinner at their home. The mood would be upbeat as her siblings were also very excited for the move and especially the fact that they would each get their own rooms in the new house. Her dad would smile and dote on the kids as they ate dinner and watched tv till 10 pm when he would insist that the kids get a long rest as they had a 2 day car trip ahead of them. And then in the morning after showers & breakfast, they would wait for the men to come and help them load the heavier stuff into the trailer and then their father would hand over the keys to the realtor and they would say their goodbyes to the town. A town which only she liked in her family. She would be saying goodbye to a lot of good friends but especially him. And her heart ached as she & he knew that they might never see each other again.

Just a minute or two more and the sun would have totally set and it would be dark. He held her tight to him and she kissed his cheek and they cried tears of sadness. One final word – Goodbye!

The Host

From the same writer that gave us that crap known as Twilight, sorry money making crap, comes the story of The Host. The movie is based on the book of the same name which Stephenie Meyer had released in 2008. In it, the earth has been invaded by a parasitical alien race known as ‘Souls’ and they have taken over all of the earth and control all but a handful of humans. Written and directed by¬†Andrew Niccol, the film stars¬†Saoirse Ronan,¬†Max Irons,¬†Jake Abel,¬†William Hurt, and¬†Diane Kruger. Unlike Twilight movies, The Host has not done well has been universally panned by critics. I shudder to think why. Anyway let’s take a look at this film.

Ok so sometime in the future this extraterrestrial parasitic aliens called “Souls”, arrive on earth and have taken over most of the humans. To identify someone who has been taken over by an alien, you just need to look at their eyes – a silver ring forms around the pupil of those whose bodies have been take over. Pretty soon all but a few handful of humans remain –¬† but the earth is peaceful for once. The aliens do not quarrel, fight or bicker. There are no wars, no hostilities, no illness, the environment is healed, no hunger, no violence – it’s ‘perfect’ because of the aliens who deemed us to be “too violent” and took over. This is when the alien Soul known as Wanderer is implanted into the body of a young woman named Melanie Stryder, who is dying, injured while trying to escape from a patrol of Soul controlled people. Wanderer can still hear Melanie talking to her and since the latter’s will is so strong, she is not easily controlled like the vast majority of humans. There is a struggle for control of the body and also a lady known as Seeker, is trying to get information about more humans in hiding from Melanie’s memory through Wanderer. Wanderer will only give partial information to Seeker, partly because of Melanie’s please and partly because she is a compassionate alien.

Wanderer learns that Melanie was captured while traveling with her brother, Jamie and her boyfriend, Jared Howe, to find Melanie’s uncle Jeb in the desert. However since Melanie is too strong, Seeker says that she will remove Wanderer from her body and infuse herself with Melanie. After Melanie begs for help, Wanderer escapes in the night and heads out to the desert and after crashing the car, she walks for miles. She is found by Jeb and his band of survivors, among which are Melanie’s younger brother Jaime, boyfriend Jared and aunt¬† who distrust Wanderer and keep her a prisoner but she manages to win them over slowly and finally has to convince them that Melanie is still alive. Ofcourse then you have the love triangle – Melanie still loves her boyfriend Jared but to confuse things Wanderer falls in love with a young man named Ian. Weird right? Wanderer is almost killed by a hostile human named Kyle but she survives and even helps to rescue him. Having gained the trust of the humans, she is later appalled when she sees that in their lab they are trying to remove the aliens from their human hosts, failing and killing both. When Jaime becomes ill due to a cut on his leg that becomes infected, Wanderer heads to a alien run hospital along with Ian & jared and steals medicine to heal him. When they get back they find Seeker waiting for them and although she attacks them, Jeb shoots her. Later Wanderer shows the humans how to remove the alien safely from a host – coax them with love and peace! (I almost barfed at this point) The alien comes out willingly and Lacey, the human regains control of her body.

hey then send the Seeker to a planet far enough from Earth that it will never return within anyone’s lifetime. Although Wanderer wants to die and asks the doctor to ensure that she is killed, when she is removed from Melanie, she is infused with a dying human named Pet, a human who was left brain-dead after the Soul inside her was removed, thereby ensuring that Wanderer can live without harming another soul. Initially dismayed, as she has wanted to die having lived for so long in so many alien host bodies, Wanderer accepts what they did. Now with a body of her own, she and Ian form a relationship, while Melanie is finally reunited with Jared. The movie ends, several months later, with the four young people being caught by Souls who appear to be Seekers, but when confronted by one, do not notice his unusual practice of brandishing a gun. After being searched, they discover that the group are actually a team of surviving humans, who reveal that there are several other groups as well. The Soul who is with them reveals that he has sided with the flourishing human resistance, as Wanderer has, and they may not be the last to do so.

I found some of the stuff incredibly corny and silly concepts for serious science fiction and it really focuses more on the romance aspects of things. Disappointed but what did I expect? This author has reduced fearsome vampires to become sparkly little teenage boys! Anyway, visually I have no complaints as it is a stunning movie to look at but it offers hardly any value. I do like some of the alien concept though, not too much. Hmmm I shall give it a 5.5 outta 10!

Weather Change On A Large Scale

By now most of you would have read reports & seen some of the images of snow hitting Egypt – for the first time in 112 years! A severe winter storm which hit the Middle East recently has blanketed much of the desert in snow. The storm, referred to as Alexa, which began on December 11, has resulted in significant snowfall in areas of Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Syria and the Palestinian territories. And there are climate change / global warming deniers in this world? The fact that us humans have done a lot to change & affect the natural course of the climate on our planet is beyond any doubt for anyone with half a brain but there are some idiots, and it seems mostly in the US, who stick by their stupid belief that we can’t do anything on a global scale. I used to wonder why the climate change deniers stick to their ideas – it is really simple!

There is the fuel industry funded climate change deniers. The relationship between industry-funded denial and public climate change skepticism has been compared to earlier efforts by the tobacco industry to undermine scientific evidence on the dangers of secondhand smoke, and linked as a direct continuation of these earlier financial relationships. A growing and dangerous anti-science movement that appears to originate from adherence to a variety of social, political, and religious doctrines that favor alternate realities. There are also the highly religious cause of denial – they refuse to believe that man can change or alter something that their “god” has created on a large scale for the planet. Which ever way you look at it, these people will cause the death of this planet if they don’t open their eyes.

With the scenes of snow in Egypt I was left wondering when if ever would we see snow in tropical Kerala, where I live? We have never ever seen snow in this part of the world. The only time I myself have seen snow is when my family visited relatives in England back in the winter of 1978 – I was a little over 2 years old and do not remember any of it. Maybe someday I shall see snow and feel it beneath my feet ….. or shoes, I don’t wanna get frostbite!

RIP Peter O’Toole

Hollywood & acting legend Peter O’Toole has died at the age of 81. The Irish-born, British reared actor (who shares a birthday with me) died on Saturday in a London hospital. O’Toole was nominated for eight Oscars in his distinguished career, and was known as a bit of a hellraiser.¬† Born to Constance Jane Eliot (n√©e¬†Ferguson), a¬†Scottish nurse, and Patrick Joseph “Spats” O’Toole, an Irish metal plater, football player, his family began a five-year tour of major racecourse towns in Northern England. Upon leaving school O’Toole obtained employment as a trainee journalist and photographer on the¬†Yorkshire Evening Post,¬†until he was called up for national service¬†as a¬†signaller¬†in the¬†Royal Navy. O’Toole began working in the theatre, gaining recognition as a¬†Shakespearean¬†actor at the¬†Bristol Old Vic¬†and with the¬†English Stage Company, before making his television debut in 1954.

He first appeared on film in 1959 in a minor role in¬†The Day They Robbed the Bank of England. O’Toole’s major break came when he was chosen to play¬†T. E. Lawrence¬†in¬†David Lean’s¬†Lawrence of Arabia¬†(1962), after¬†Marlon Brando¬†proved unavailable and¬†Albert Finney¬†turned down the role. His performance was ranked number one in¬†Premiere¬†magazine’s list of the 100 Greatest Performances of All Time.¬†The role earned him his first Oscar nomination, though he lost to Gregory Peck’s Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. That established something of a pattern in O’Toole’s career. He would be nominated for eight Oscars, but never won until he was awarded an honorary one in 2003.¬†He received seven further Oscar nominations ‚Äď for¬†Becket¬†(1964),¬†The Lion in Winter¬†(1968 ),¬†Goodbye, Mr. Chips¬†(1969),¬†The Ruling Class¬†(1972),¬†The Stunt Man(1980),¬†My Favorite Year¬†(1982) and¬†Venus¬†(2006) ‚Äď and holds the record for the most Academy Award acting nominations without a win. He won four Golden Globes, a¬†BAFTA¬†and an¬†Emmy, and was the recipient of an¬†Honorary Academy Award¬†in 2003. He won the Irish ¬†Film & Television Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for King Priam in Troy (2004).

In 1959, he married Welsh actress¬†Si√Ęn Phillips, with whom he had two daughters: actress¬†Kate¬†and Patricia. Peter and Si√Ęn were divorced in 1979. O’Toole and his girlfriend, model Karen Brownhad a son, Lorcan Patrick O’Toole (born 17 March 1983), now an actor, when O’Toole was fifty years old.

Updated To WordPress 3.8 aka “Parker”

Uptil a few weeks ago I had completely been ignoring updating any of the themes, plugins or even the WordPress version in my blog for the past year or so. That caused me some problems with my blog’s webserver and I had my blog / website blocked temporarily as it was creating alerts to them and they emailed me about it. Fortunately I was able to contact them and they unblocked it for me and asked me to do the updates and delete any plugins & themes that I wasn’t using.

A quick check saw that I had about 7 to 8 plugins that I could delete and around 6 that needed updating desperately. Also I had so many themes installed and out of date version wise when I don’t use any of them and have been using this current theme exclusively for a little over 2 years. So I quickly updated everything I needed and deleted all the crap I wasn’t using and had no intention of ever using again. But after I updated WordPress (3.7. something) I noticed that I couldn’t view the ‘Visual’ option when I wanted to make a new post. It was so frustrating but I managed by just using the HTML tab. I tried reinstalling WordPress but that didn’t solve the issue. I did a manual upload & update and that didn’t work either.

Today morning I saw that they had a new version out, 3.8 or “Parker”, so I updated it from the dashboard hoping that it would solve my problems. It updated it but didn’t solve the problem. Then I deleted some of the WordPress folders and manually uploaded & reinstalled WordPress again but it still wasn’t solving the problem. Then I went online¬† and tried asking people on Facebook & Twitter if they knew how to solve this issue.

Finally I found the answer by goggling it and finding the answer in a Wodpress problem. It is a common issue for some people or so it seems. Maybe it is only with Firefox but anyway, it’s done and I’m happy. Also, I am loving the new awesome look of version 3.8. Very improved and sleeker looking!

A Haunted House

The Wayans brothers are famous for making movies with their brand of humour and parodying horror flicks. This time it’s just Marlon who stars, co-produces and co-wrote A Haunted House which is mostly parodying the found footage style of recent horror movies especially Paranormal Activity and a bit of The Devil Inside. During interviews to promote the film, Wayans explained “it’s not exactly a parody” but rather a movie with funny characters doing the opposite of what typical white people do in similar horror films. Co-starring with him is Essence Atkins, Cedric The Entertainer, Nick Swardson, David Koechner, Dave Sheridan, Marlene Forte & Alanna Ubach.

The movie is set in a nice suburban house, much like in the Paranormal Activity movies where Malcolm Johnson is awaiting his girlfriend Keisha who is just moving in. However, as he starts filming, things go wrong as she kills his boy by accident when she drives over him. After a funeral for the dog, they start to put away Keisha’s large collection of things after the maid Rosa leaves. Post dinner on their first night at home Malcolm is stunned by the stinky farts that Keisha does in her sleep. When Kisha notices her keys on the floor she tries to tell Malcolm that they might have a ghost. To put her mind at ease, Malcolm has two¬† men setup cameras all over the house, in addition to his handheld ones. While watching their sexual act the previous night, Keisha notices that the door moved on it’s own, which Malcolm dismisses using sexual jokes. The next night, Malcolm notices the paranormal activity and tries to move out of the house and leave Kisha. Since he could not sell his house in the current market, they call a psychic , Chip, over to check the house. Chip who is gay is more interested in getting to know Malcolm, as he has the hots for him.

Before Chip can leave, after finding nothing wrong, Kisha confesses to making a deal with the devil for a pair of shoes. She then shows Malcolm a video of her 8th birthday in which she plays with her imaginary friend. That night Kisha awakens in the middle of the night and stands next to the bed for a couple of hours until she begins to randomly dance for another hour and slaps Malcolm’s face to awaken him. Malcolm wakes up and follows Kisha to the kitchen where he catches her eating uncooked food and drinking old milk. Kisha tells him that she’s going to the store, but Malcolm tries to get her back to bed until she starts screaming crazily. In the morning, Kisha does not remember a thing from the prior night. The following night they hear sounds but it is only Rosa who was sleeping in the spare room and having hit her, thinking she was a ghost, Rosa quits. After that to relieve tension Malcolm & Keisha smoke weed and the ghost joins them. The next night, after they have their friends Steve & his wife Jenny over for dinner they use an ouija board to communicate with the ghost. However when it misspells ‘ghost’ as ‘gost, the 4 of them make fun of it and the angered ghost hrows the ouija board across the room, scaring Jenny and Steve out of the house. That night, the ghost drags Malcolm out of the room and has sex with Kisha. Malcolm even calls his cousin Ray-Ray and his gang over as the ghost had sex with Keisha but they are scared away when the living room furniture levitates to the ceiling and then drops heavily.

The next night Kisha waits for the ghost until it gets late and leaves. After Kisha leaves, the ghost rapes Malcolm. The couple then decide to ignore the ghost no matter what it does but it gets angry and when Malcolm is listening to music, it attacks Keisha and possesses her. Malcolm noticing her odd behaviour calls father Doug, an ex-con, to exorcise her but it fails and so Malcolm calls Dan and Bobby, the camera security men who are avid ghost hunters as well, to help as well as Chip. During the exorcism, Kisha escapes and goes into the living room. Before Malcolm and Doug find her, Doug accidentally shoots Rosa, who had come to pick up her last check, and kills her. Keisha then escapes to the basement & when Malcolm reaches for her, she begins to attack him and the whole group begins to beat her up, apparently forcing the ghost out of her body. Thinking that it is over the rest leave and the next night Malcolm & Keisha resume their lives by having a marathon sex session. In the middle of the night, Kisha wakes up and stand next to the bed for a few hours before walking out of the room and making a big crash and screaming Malcolm’s name for him to investigate. When Malcolm comes out of his room, Kisha throws him back and he hits the camera, knocking him out. When Kisha enters the room her shirt is bloody. She crawls to Malcolm and sniffs his body until he farts in her face. As Kisha lunges at the camera her face takes on a demonic appearance and the screen goes black. In the epilogue, Malcolm wakes up and celebrates that he lived until Kisha comes back in and drags him out of the room, ending the movie.

Filled with silly jokes, Black American humour (I just can’t understand that idiot Cedric) and farts, sexual references & innuendoes and some funny scenes, it’s good but not as good as I had hoped it would be. Made on a budget of $ 2.5 million the movie made almost $60 million back, hence a sequel is already set for 2014. I’d give it a 6.5 outta 10! Ok for some laughs.

Arsenal 3 Manchester City 6

It was painful to watch. Manchester City has been on a scoring romp lately, beating top sides by large margins of goals. Manuel Pellegrini’s side closed the gap on the Gunners to three points with another in a growing list of devastating attacking displays at home this season. And they have piled on the agony for North London’s two contenders as Arsenal suffered following City’s recent 6-0 demolition of Tottenham. All was not gloom for Arsenal as they may point to some questionable offside calls and a rejected penalty claim but Man City was a force that could not be stopped as they have now scored 35 league goals at home this season.

Sergio Aguero’s early goal was cancelled out by Theo Walcott but Alvaro Negredo put City back in front before half-time. City’s potency was not reduced by a calf injury to Aguero, with Fernandinho extending their lead before Walcott’s second restored some optimism for Arsene Wenger’s side. But the hosts were coming at Arsenal from all angles, with David Silva and Fernandinho again finding the target before Per Mertesacker’s header made it 5-3 in stoppage time. That was indeed how it should have stayed but City got the final word as Yaya Toure’s penalty gave them another six goals in what is become a catalogue of virtuoso performances at home. Arsenal will have to go back to the video of this game to showcase some poor defending and certainly goalkeeper Szczesny, who despite some clean sheets is a big suspect, has to be blamed for atleast 2 of the goals.

Oliver Giroud should have scored atleast twice while Jack Wilshire was denied by a brilliant stop from City’s goalie Costel Pantilimon. This game & performance just reiterates what I have been ranting about for the past couple of years and this year even with Arsenal being on top of the league for most of the season – it showcased our huge weaknesses and the fact that this squad has been over-performing. Wenger has to change or be replaced if Arsenal have any hope of winning any more titles.

Battlestar Galactica (1978) – Season 1

After the mammoth 3 part episode pilot or theatrical movie as shown in some countries, BSG continued as a 24 episode single season on television. So the pilot is split into episodes 1, 2 & 3 and then the rest. BSG would have some stand alone episodes and also 2 episodes arcs, some episodes that added nothing to the main theme, with the overall theme being escaping the Cylons and trying to find earth. Episodes 4 & 5, The Lost Planet Of the Gods parts I & II, sees many warriors suffering from an unknown ailment, the Galactica recruits new viper pilots‚ÄĒmostly young women, including Apollo’s new bride, Serina. Meanwhile on board the Cylon basestar, Baltar’s order of execution is countermanded. He is spared and given command of a basestar and introduced to an IL-Series Drone, Lucifer, as his second-in-command. Starbuck is lost while on patrol and captured by the Cylons and brought to meet baltar. Apollo is saddened by his best friend’s death and Serina, fearing that they all may not have much time to live hastens her wedding to Apollo. After a battle with a Cylon patrol, and led by Adama’s spiritual interpretations, the fleet enters a vast magnetic void, emerging at the planet Kobol, the legendary world from which humanity originated. Landing parties make their way to the surface of the desert like surface and find pyramids and ruins. While the others setup a camp, Adam, Apollo & Serina enter a tomb and find a room that appears to contain a sarcophagus. Baltar comes in through another entry; like Adama he also recognized that the planet could be Kobol from the descriptions.

Baltar claims that he did not betray the colonies, and claims to be sympathetic to the humans. However neither Adama nor Apollo are falling for it and know that they should try and find clues to the path to earth. Starbuck returns to the camp, much to the joy of Athena. Cylon raiders begin attacking the camp and the female viper pilots defend them and are soon joined by the recovering warriors from Galactica. In the rubble Baltar is trapped while a cylon shoots Serina fatally. Although the humans suffer little other casualty and are able to get back to their battlestar, Serina dies leaving Boxey to be raised solely by Apollo. In the next episode, Apollo has to land on a strange planet as he is low on fuel and meets and befriends a young widow and her son, rallying a town against “Red Eye”‚ÄĒ a likewise marooned, yet memory-damaged, Cylon centurion gunslinger, who is controlled by the town’s richest man. Apollo kills the cylon and is able to salvage some fuel from an old ship and makes his way back to the fleet. Ironically in the next episode it is Starbuck who is lost! They would do this often in the series. After losing an experimental Viper to a smuggler while on a planet, Starbuck is imprisoned on a long lost Colonial penal colony, but this new environment holds a possible clue to the location of Earth. A former prisoner long dead has drawn the earth’s solar system, meaning he has seen and been to that region of space. Herded into a confined area of space by the Cylons, the fleet must pass within close range of a lethal Cylon pulsar cannon‚ÄĒunless an expedition of officers from the Galactica and a team of convicts can penetrate the ice-bound fortress housing the weapon and destroy it. Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer lead a team of cut-throat demolitions and cold-weather experts (and the stowaway Boxey). Along the way, they encounter the misguided human scientist who originally built the weapon, as well as his legions of clones (guest starring Brit Ekland).

When a Cylon attack destroys the fleet’s food supply, Adama and the others must agree to certain compromises with old acquaintances and with the inhabitants of a grain-rich, yet politically turbulent planet. Once again this is a wild west themed episode and offers little to the overal arch. And then we have the crazy episode – crash-landing on the planet Atilla, Starbuck befriends a group of young siblings trying to free their castle, their planet, and their father from the Cylons. This family lives alone on the planet, as the other humans are dead, in a medieval style castle and ride —- unicorns! Freaking unicorns! And after they get their father back with the help of Starbuck who formulates a plan, they defeat the cylons and get their castle back. While Boomer & Apollo come to find Starbuck they offer to take the father and his kids with them – but the family says NO! They will stay alone on the planet and defend themselves if cylons appear again! No kidding! In “The Living Legend” the Galactica is reunited with the Battlestar Pegasus, previously thought destroyed. Led by the brilliant but arrogant Commander Cain (guest starring Llyod Bridges), the fleet is torn in its loyalty between Adama and Cain until the human traitor Baltar launches a devastating attack. In order to obtain much-needed fuel, the Galactica and Pegasus join forces in a daring attack on the Cylons. The Pegasus plunges into the teeth of Cylon forces and is either destroyed or “missing in action” after the attack. These two episodes introduces Sheba (Anne Lockheart) as a regular cast member and new love interest to Appolo.

The Galactica is rammed by Cylon Raiders making suicide runs on the main bridge and a landing bay. With Adama lying critically injured and the ship in flames, Boomer and Athena lead a group of survivors in the rejuvenation center, relying on Boxey’s robot daggit Muffit to help them. Vipers are disappearing from regular patrols, and mysterious bright lights are flying around the Galactica at immeasurable speed. On an eerie, red-glowing planet, the enigmatic Count Iblis (Patrick Macnee) is found, apparently the sole survivor of a major catastrophe. Always shunning the mysterious bright lights, Iblis uses his charm and his supernatural powers to wrest control of the fleet from Adama, but the wiley Commander knows Iblis’ key is on the red planet, where Apollo and Starbuck go only to face tragedy ‚Äď and find the answer to the mysterious lights. Iblis performs feats of magic and gets Baltar to surrender himself to the council of the 12 and is made a prisoner. Iblis identity is kept mysterious – he is revealed as the voice of the Cylon’s Imperial Leader but is originally from an advanced race of beings, much like the humans, who ascended into ‘angels’ like form after millions of years of evolution. The ‘angels’ help Starbuck, Apollo & Sheba and Iblis is forced to go into hiding. They also give the coordinates of earth to the 3 humans. An old con man, Chameleon, meets Starbuck and cons him into believing he may be his father in order to gain his help in evading a trio of blood-thirsty Borellians who are after him seeking revenge for a previous con. In the process, Starbuck’s girlfriend Cassiopeia learns that Chameleon’s con may not actually be a con after all.

When Starbuck is implicated in a rival triad-player’s murder, Apollo and Boomer come to his defense as Protectors. They eventually uncover a plot involving Karibdis, a traitor alongside Count Baltar in the Destruction of the Twelve Colonies. A ship of humans in suspended animation is found drifting in space. When brought aboard the Galactica, the Colonial leaders debate whether to awaken its occupants. Their ship is eventually escorted by Apollo, Starbuck, and Cassiopeia to the planet Paradeen ‚ÄĒ embroiled in a bitter war with the Eastern Alliance. Baltar escapes from the prison barge by hijacking a shuttle piloted by Boomer and Sheba. Taking advantage of lax security imposed by the new governing council, Baltar kidnaps the council members from a Galactica landing bay and demands to be released. The mysterious bright lights return again, transporting the bewildered Apollo to the planet Terra to avert war with the Eastern Alliance. Exposing a plan by the devious president, Apollo has Starbuck warn the Galactica, which uses its laser cannon to destroy all the ballistic missiles avoiding planetary holocaust. When Starbuck encounters his long-lost love Aurora, she complicates matters by taking part in a mutinous rebellion aboard the Celestra. Her rebellion, undertaken for a noble cause, is soon overshadowed by a sinister mutiny by Charka, the Celestra’s power-hungry second-in-command. Receiving a mysterious radio signal possibly from Earth, Adama and the crew are wary of a Cylon trap, and decide to turn the tables by attacking the Cylons with a stolen Cylon Raider. Apollo and Starbuck, in the series finale’s last scene, narrowly miss receiving Apollo-11 moon-landing transmissions from Earth.

The show was cancelled after lower rating caused by network interference led change in screening changes, causing them to lose some of their viewership. Since the show was expensive it was decided not to produce a second season, causing much outrage by the fans. Shame as it was a good show, with a few bad episode choices non-withstanding, and had a lot to offer. More discussions to follow.

The movie CBGB is a 2013 American historical film about the former New York music venue CBGB. It focuses on the story of how Hilly Crystal setup a mall bar/club that would go down in history as the birthplace of American underground rock’n’roll and punk. The movie stars Alan Rickman as Hilly (in probably his best performance) along with a supporting cast that includes, Ashley Green, Donal Logue, Stana Katic, Freddy Rodriguez as his closest friends and supporting roles by Ryan Hurst, Johnny Galecki, Justin Bartha, Taylor Hawkins & Malin Akerman. The movie films original music by several of the bands that would make their name at CBGB and go on to fame, played by actors.

Hilly Crystal is a down on his luck, divorced and twice bankrupt middle aged man who seems to know good music but has no business sense. Borrowing money from his aged mother he buys a run down bar with a cockroach infested kitchen. He takes the help of friend Merv Ferguson and the homeless drunk Idaho to set up the bar and make it semi-presentable. And there is Jonathan, Hilly’s dog who leaves huge clumps of dog poop around the bar. They build a small stage in one corner where Hilly wants local bands to play their original music. Initially Hilly meant to have country, bluegrass and blues bands playing there (hence the name CBGB) but it would become the birthplaces of the punk & new wave scene in New York. He hires Taxi as the sound engineer for a small pay and then auditions bands to see if he likes their music. His line is “If it’s too loud, I’m walking” meaning they don’t get the gig. His estranged daughter Lisa also comes and joins the club as she needs a place to stay and tries to manage things. Over time he has Television, The Talking Heads, The Ramones, Wayne County & the Electric Chairs, Blondie & Patti Smith play their original music there well before they became famous. All along the way a lot of free drinks and some free food is served, although Hilly doesn’t tolerate people taking drugs in the toilet. Money is still tight as the club isn’t really making much due to Hilly not having a business acumen and not willing to let his well meaning daughter take charge of finances, which causes her to leave at one point.

Still the Ramones gets signed and go on their way to flory as does Blondie and the others. Along with the main storyline there is the subplot of two young men Legs McNeil (Peter Vack) and John Holmstrom (Josh Zuckerman) who start their own Punk magazine joining future filmmaker Mary Harron to do interviews of the up & coming stars and publish the magazine, which they sell at CBGB. At one point they also meet & interview Lour Reed who was already a star then. Wanting to do more, Hilly invests a lot of his money into managing a badly-behaved punk band called The Dead Boys whose frontman (Justin Bartha) slashes himself on stage with a knife and strangles himself with the mic wire to the point of passing out! Hilly gets ex-Goldie & the Gingerbreads singer turned producer Genya Raven (Stana Katic) to produce their debut album and gives them money to go on the road. However they crash the truck that Hilly loaned them and their drummer is hospitalized in critical condition (he would make it). With possible foreclosrue as he has lost all his money, Hilly almost gives up and goes to seek refuge at the old farm where he grew up and the kindly old man who is the current owner lets him stay for a few days. However once he is back in New York, Hilly gets a pleasant surprise – Merv & Lisa had arranged a sizeable donation from well wishers so that the club can stay afloat and pay their bills. Renewed with a purpose, Hilly lets Lisa manage the finances and continues to keep the bar & club.

As the movie ends, they audition a new band from the UK who wants the honour of playing at CBGB and Hilly auditions them – it’s The Police and they play “Roxanne”. Hilly is enthusiastic and remarks to Merv that there is something there. During the closing credits shows the actual footage of the members of Talking Heads thanking Kristal for his early support during their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And Hilly walks on to the stage to a standing ovation. The real Hilly died in 2007 from complications of lung cancer, aged 75. It’s an ok movie, which I liked quite a bit, even though most critics thought that the movie didn’t do justice to the club or Hilly and was a safe almost sit-com style of a movie. I dunno the whole story behind the club and the scene, just some artists and their music, so for me, it’s a 7 outta 10!
