Shaving For You

Letshave says that there are India’s very first shaving club. They sell razors by Dorco and seem to have been around since 1995 and just recently launched in India. I saw this ad about this club in Facebook and thought, why not give it a try. I have been looking for a good regular razor for daily use -(I don’t shave if I am staying back at home on the weekends but otherwise, I shave everyday and on Monday mornings I use my electric razor. For all my shaves other than on Monday I rely on disposable razors as I never seem to find a proper razor that has easy access to the cartridges.

Well I took out my credit card and made the payment and I will wait and see if this one is the one that solves my razor woes and be the one razor to rule them all.

Keeping Up With The Roshans

Tell us about the one luxury item you wish you could afford, in as much detail as you can. Paint a picture for us.

Luxury item? I would really love to have my own luxury bus with comfortable beds, bathroom and shower, little kitchen, lounge area and living area with giant tv and satellite connection. Nice big bed with a busty redhead and a busty blonde babe for company while we ride all through the places I want to go to

How about a private jet (with a big jucuzzi, big beds, bar, living room area, pool table, media center etc etc in it? Join the mile high club as well. Wow that would be living in style.

Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution that you kept?

A few years back I had a few new year’s resolution which I have kept or achieved. Things like starting my own website (a self hosted one rather than a or Blogger site), getting a new phone, get a new job with a much higher pay package, upgrade to a new computer – things that I have managed and done once or twice.

Things that I always feel I should do but haven’t achieved yet are things like losing weight, moving away from family and finding my own place, finding my soulmate and getting married… said soulmate. I wonder if these things will ever happen for me and it makes me sad that I haven’t done these by now.

On a lighter note I had once also put learning to cook something other than eggs & instant noodles and also organize my stuff much better. Saving a lot more money than I am doing now is also something that was major on my list and although I am earning a lot more these days, it just seems like I am not saving any more either.

The Vatican Tapes

I didn’t know much about this movie other than having watched a bit of a clip online. Decided to check it out and see if it was worth it. It was…ok I guess. The Vatican Tapes is a 2015 American supernatural horror film directed by Mark Neveldine from a screenplay written by Christopher Borrelli, which is in turn based on a story by Chris Morgan and Christopher Borrelli. The film stars Olivia Taylor Dudley, Kathleen Robertson, Michael Peña, Djimon Hounsou, Dougray Scott, and John Patrick Amedori, and was released on July 24, 2015, by Lionsgate.

An ordinary but pretty 27 year old, Angela Holmes, is celebrating her birthday with a surprise party hosted by her live in boyfriend Pete. Her sheriff dad Roger Holmes, disapproves of her choice in men (it looks like he would disapprove of anyone) is staying with her for the weekend. Angela cuts her hands badly on the knife and goes to the hospital for treatment. Soon she starts to display increasingly disturbing behaviour erratic and strange behaviors, which finally catches the eye of local priest Father Oscar Lozano. She causes a car crash which hospitalizes her and while at the hospital she ominously picks up a baby at the maternity ward, seemingly to harm it. When the police investigates, she points to one of the detectives towards the window where a raven sits (the messenger of Satan) and he stares at it and then proceeds to take two light bulbs and pierce his eyes out. She also seems to know about stuff that she shouldn’t know, like details about the love life of her doctor and the things she is doing with a married man.

All this seem dangerous enough for Lozano to call (who you gonna call) the Vatican and lead exorcist Cardinal Bruun who travels all the way to the US to chase the demon away from the girl. The cardinal arrives from Vatican City, armed with holy water and the camcorders and proceeds to exorcise the demon from the girl – only thing is, it’s no ordinary demon but apparently possibly Satan himself. Angela coughs up three eggs (what???) and spouts off some ancient language that mocks the church and stuff and later the house blows up killing everyone except Lozano and the girl. She wanders off and starts to perform “miracles” healing people etc. She is hailed as possibly divine or a charlatan and as the movie ends, Lozano is recruited by the Vatican where he is shown clips from various tv sources the rise in popularity of Angela. This is important because as the church states, the anti-christ will come performing such “miracles” and a false religion will rise around him/her and people will be misled to worship it.

It held some promise but ended up being more of the same. A few creepy things stand out and Olivia Dudley does a good job but overall it is very forgettable. 6 outta 10!

Stop That Stink

Tell us about something you’ve tried to quit. Did you go cold turkey, or for gradual change? Did it stick?

The only thing that I remember wanting to quit that badly was ofcourse smoking. Not only is it a disgusting habit that stinks yourself, your fingers, your clothes and things and people around you but it is so fucking harmful for you. So why did I pick up smoking? Easy, when I was 17 some of my close friends and a couple of my cousins who I hung with a lot all smoked. It was natural that I also picked it up.

I didn’t used to be a chain smoker and I also was very particular about the brands that I smoked. I liked menthol as a teenager and I also liked a brown coloured one (can’t remember the name of them right now) that was my usual brand. I liked to sit in the dark and smoke, late at night just before I go to bed with all the lights off. I smoked maybe a few cigarettes a month and so it wasn’t like a habit or anything. But mostly when I was with those cousins and my friends who smoked.

When I was 22 I just stopped the whole thing altogether. I just thought to myself “You have asthma and you are smoking? Fucking quit it” and I just stopped. Ever since then I havave not smoked once (it’s been 17 years now) and I have no intention of ever picking it up again. It stinks!

Back To The Weekly Grind

So it was back to work today after a 3 day weekend and back to the bustle and grind of a regular work day. I also worked in an additional 3 hours for good measure. Well, it’s expected that I will have to churn in a few extra hours with the work load that we currently have at the moment and I expect that this will continue till the end of January or perhaps till mid February and after that things will be back to normal.

I am not feeling all that great but I can’t stay back and take a few days off. I wish that we in India had the same situation that people in the West enjoy, a set of 10-15 days off for the winter break. That seems reasonable to ask for but Indian companies – they don’t work like that at all. I have also never been on a holiday ever! Strange and surprising but that’s the way. I get a certain number of days off (both sick leave and personal) and if I plan it accordingly, I guess I could string together 7-10 days off and go somewhere to relax and enjoy. I am yet to do that.

Someday I will go away to a resort or a spa and relax for a week or so. Until then…cheers!

Final Frontier

Star Trek is a concept near and dear to me. No other tv series / movies can ever compare to me in it’s innovation, ideology, ideas etc. With 5 live action series, 12 movies (a 13th which will be released this year), 1 animation series and several fan based productions out there, the Star Trek universe is vast and varied. You could literally go several millenniums and never finish the number of possible stories that the franchise offers.

Other than the official cannon shows I have also seen Star Trek : Of Gods & Men, Star Trek Continues, Star Trek : Renegades & Prelude to Axanar (hopefully the full length movie will come out soon) I have heard of several other proposals to make a show or mini series based on Trek. I just got to know today of a show that, although has not been made, has various concepts all set out. The concept is called Star Trek : Final Frontier (not to be confused with Star Trek V : The Final Frontier), a proposed animation tv series, developed by Zero Room Productions in late 2005 as a series of five animated segments with a continuing plot that could lead to more adventures. There was initial interest from until the end of 2007, the entire staff of was laid off and a reshuffle of management at CBS Interactive soon followed. Still the website exists to let us know what could have been.

Star Trek: Final Frontier takes places in the future of the Star Trek universe, approximately 150 years after the last events seen in the Next Generation era. Crew bios are also given for 5 of the main characters which include “Zero” (pictured above) one of only a handful of Starfleet officers to come from the mysterious world of Prime, where numbers and equations are not just a way of life, they are life itself. The Primorians’ fundamental understanding of mathematics has made their world the undisputed leader in mathematical discoveries over the last century. I find that fascinating and would like to see this concept brought to life someday.

Arsenal 1 Newcastle United 0

Arsenal moved two points clear of Leicester at the top of the Premier League table with a win over Newcastle. The unconvincing Gunners looked set for a point on a soggy Emirates Stadium pitch until defender Laurent Koscielny came to the rescue with a close-range poked winner in the 72nd minute. The Magpies should have come away with at least a point, having been on the front foot for much of the second half. Georginio Wijnaldum went closest but his shot was saved by Petr Cech.

It was not pretty, nor was it particularly effective but it was a win that kept the belief going among Arsenal fans that this might be their season. The Gunners may not deserve the three points, and few would have begrudged the Magpies victory, but the goal encapsulated why Arsenal are top and why the visitors are struggling. Newcastle striker Ayoze Perez covered a lot of ground, helping out his team-mates in midfield to quell the danger posed by the likes of Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. However, the young Spaniard switched off in the 72nd minute, allowing Koscielny to stick out a foot and convert an Olivier Giroud header. The Magpies midfield dominated their counterparts for periods of the match. The wingers did not look up for the battle, with Oxlade-Chamberlain only winning 33.3% of his duels, while Theo Walcott won 36.4% of his – the two lowest figures in the Arsenal side.

Arsenal have won nine successive Premier League games against Newcastle. The Magpies have scored just six goals in their last 16 Premier League away trips. Koscielny has scored three goals against Newcastle, more than he has any other Premier League opponent. Wenger has won 11 of his 12 Premier League meetings with Steve McClaren, losing the other. The Gunners are unbeaten in nine Premier League home games, winning seven and drawing two and now sit 2 points clear at the top of the Premier League with 42 points.

Survivor (2015)

I am a big Pierce Brosnan fan, ever since the early to mid 1980s when I watched his breakthrough title role in the hit tv series Remington Steele and throughout his movie career afterwards. And I ofcourse love, love, love Milla Jovavich ever since I first saw her in 1997’s The Fifth Element. Put them both together in a spy action thriller with another long time fav Dylan McDermott….unfortunately the movie isn’t the sum of it’s top notch acting talent.

Survivor is a 2015 British-American spy thriller film directed by James McTeigue and written by Philip Shelby. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett & James D’Arcy. Jovovich plays Kate Abbott, an employee for the American Embassy in London, who began working in the government after most of her friends were killed in 9/11. She begins to put in more stringent & strict processes for approving visas for Europeans to the US, including denying visas for Dr. Balan and others. She gets herself a bit into trouble with the American Ambassador because the scientist Dr. Balan’s wife was denied a visa years before while she tried to get to the US for medical treatment and died, but Sam Parker the head of the department backs her up as she has great instincts. And she proves to be right. Balan is planning to take his revenge on America by blowing up a chemical bomb in NYC on new year’s eve.

Bill Talbot, the supervisor, is also a co-conspirator as his soldier son is taken alive as a hostage in Afghanistan. To let him go, Bill is forced to forge the documents that give visas to several terrorists including Dr. Balan. A millionaire business man with vested interest in letting Dr. Balan get his job done, hires the assassin & hitman for hire The Watchmaker (Brosnan) to kill Kate. However most of her team are killed while attending a restaurant for the birthday of their superior, Bill Talbot, with Kate only surviving because she left the restaurant to get a last-minute present for Bill. An investigation into the attack reveals that the bomb has traces of chromium, leading one of Kate’s fellow employees, Sam Parker, to deduce that the perpetrator was the Watchmaker, known for his precision work, who detonated a bomb with similar traces in Paris some time earlier. Kate who was only dazed in the explosion is chased by the Watchmaker and escapes but is now on the run as she is setup for the crime.

She runs into Bill who points a gun at her and in the tussle Bill is killed while a passerby shoots this on his video, making it seem like Kate killed Bill on purpose. On Sam & Sally (the tech expert at the embassy) believe Kate is innocent and Sam meets up with Kate at Bill’s apartment where they find the ransom video for Bill’s son. The Watchmaker attacks the two and Sam is left injured while Kate escapes. With Sally’s help she sneaks back into the embassy to create false passports for herself to follow Dr. Balan to New York and stop the bomb from being detonated. In a final battle Kate manages to kill the assassin as he tumbles to his death from the terrace of a skyscraper and the bomb does not go off, saving hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Times’ Square.

Not a very good movie but entertaining enough if you don’t have too much expectations. I give it a 6.5 outta 10!

Happy 9th Blogaversary To Me

Happy 9th birthday to my blog Awake & Dreaming & a happy 9th Blogaversary to me!

It was on the 1st of January that I setup this blog in a day with the help of my cousin (over the phone), who guided me through the process and by night I had the thing setup. Then I installed WordPress and started blogging.

This isn’t my first blog; I first started blogging in 2002, through,  when I lived in Calicut and continued with it when I moved back to Cochin. I was an inconsistent blogger, nothing having an internet connection at home & from 2003 till 2006, not having a computer at home. By 2005 I started getting more & more into blogging and I created a new one in and called it Count Roshculla : Awake & Dreaming. I started spending more time in internet cafes and hence could blog a lot more consistently. But I always wanted my very own website & domain and I wanted to install wordpress. That was achieved on January 1st, 2007.

This past year has seemingly flown by and I have tried to capture as much as I can about it on my blog. Unlike a lot of people who used to blog regularly, I have continued. I don’t read much blog posts anymore, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook having taken up much of my time on the internet but I have kept my blog up. And I will continue to do so for as long as I can. I find this quite therapeutic and enjoy blogging. Here’s to another year!
