Hail Storm

You’re at the beach with some friends and/or family, enjoying the sun, nibbling on some watermelon. All of a sudden, within seconds, the weather shifts and hail starts descending from the sky. Write a post about what happens next.

So we’re all wondering what the heck kind of weather this is. One second you’re nibbling on ice cold watermelon and enjoying the heat and suddenly it’s a hail storm. With hail the size of baseballs falling from the sky. And it hits people in the head, the chest and their arms and legs. Pandemonium strikes and all I can hear are yelling and screaming, parents trying to shield their young and calling for help.

The hail is so hard that it even punched in several holes on the boats that were tied to the pier. People’s bare backs were showing red spots the size of a large hand due to being hit by the hail. The lifeguards did their best to usher people out of the beach but the hail just kept hitting on as far as the eye could see. Soon I could see lots of blood and several dead bodies lying on the sand and the loud wails of their loved ones trying to get to the dead bodies. Just what kind of weather is this. And all of a sudden, we hear the deafening noise of what sounded like huge airplanes above us. But it wasn’t airplanes!

It was a ufo. An alien spaceship or a mothership to be more likely. It was huge, the size of several football stadiums put together. And it was responsible for sending the large hail at us. This was the first attack of an invasion by a hostile alien race. Were we in any shape to deal with it? It looked unlikely as the ship blocked our vision as it closed upon the earth’s surface and in the distance I could see several such large ships slowly coming down.

My First Visit To Lulu Mall

Well folks, I finally did it. Lulu Mall, India’s largest mall (89th in the world though) opened up sometime in March of 2013 but I had yet to go to the place. Unbelievable fact, I know. I kept saying that I would eventually get to it. And then I thought let me wait until the initial crazy dies down and the crowd thins up a bit and let them open more store. Finally I said, I need to spend a day for this and that day just didn’t seem to come by.

Then I said I wanted some company and it just never worked out. Then I blamed it all on the fact that ever since I moved to Kacheripady I hardly ever go to the Edapally area any more. Even with a big enough reason like this I just never did. And I used to live around 4 kms away from Lulu mall but that was until 2006. So I just never went to the mall until today.

I booked a taxi from Taxio at 10:30 am and reached the mall by 11 am. First up was a cold coffee and breakfast since I didn’t have any. I stopped at Costa Coffee and enjoyed a chicken panini and an ice mocha. It was pretty good and refreshed I started my journey through the 4 floors of the mall (Costa coffee is almost right next to the entrance).

I saw many sights. Including what looks like a transformer robot (can’t say since I don’t follow that franchise)

Also, I think this is the old school security guards that the mall uses for enforcement. LOL, I finally meet some knights. I bought a few things, just some odds and ends – a novel, a coffee mug and a keychain and a chocolate shaped in the form of a heart.

For lunch, I finally chose Pizza Hut though I wanted to go to some other places as well. But I absolutely loved their garlic bread with mozarella cheese as appetizers. So delicious.

And I had a small sized chicken n corn pizza which was simple and yet so much better than most of their Indianized pizza (with Indian spices). I feel that you can’t experiment too much with spices and chillies as it takes away from the taste of the crust, sauce and cheese. But this one was awesome.

A friend named Ranjith joined me at the mall’s large hypermart and after I bought a few stuff I treated him to an icecream at Baskin n Robbins. I had a coupon for Rs.250 for Baskin n Robbins that I got from the office for points I get for doing good work and it took the staff at BnR a full 20 minutes to just let me know if the coupon was acceptable (it still had 3 more months to expire but they seemed incompetent to deal with a coupon) and another 5 minutes to start taking our order. We talked for a while until it was time for me to go. I hailed another taxi and bought a bottle of cold water to drink on the ride back as I was so tired by then and I had sweated a lot having walked atleast like 3-4 kms inside the mall.

San Andreas

San Andreas is a 2015 American disaster film directed by Brad Peyton. The screenplay was written by Carlton Cuse, with Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore receiving a story credit. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, and Paul Giamatti.

As most of you movie buffs will know by now this film is about a huge earthquake that triggers off a sequence of other quakes and even a tsunami that kills hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, and destroys a huge section of California, forever altering the landscape in the process. Like many such blockbuster natural disaster films this also involves a family as the focus of the film; separated dad and mom about to go through a divorce, a rich boyfriend that the mom is dating, boyfriend dies in the process of the movie, dad and mom unite after saving the daughter. Oh and there’s the “ghost” of the dead other child too, one who drowned much earlier.

I was happy to see Archie Panjabi in this film, looking really hot too I must say. She is the main Asian represent as Dr. Kim Park (Will Yun Lee) is killed very early on, when a 7.1 on the Richter scale quake levels off the Hoover dam. Ray Gain is a rescue pilot for the LA Fire department and has to go back to duty and cannot take his daughter, Blake, to San Francisco. Blake instead goes to San Fran with Emma’s, her mom, new boyfriend Daniel Riddick in his jet. While at Riddick’s office, Blake meets and befriends British architect Ben and his younger kid brother Ollie. That’s when the quake hits the city and the reading is 9.1. Ben and Ollie rescue a trapped Blake from a car as Riddick has left her and making his way to safety but he too dies. Ray rescues Emma from the top of a tumbling building, where she was having lunch with Riddick’s disapproving sister (hey look it’s Kylie Minogue – she is killed before I could say for sure it was here). They then go to rescue their daughter.

On the way much destruction, much chaos, convenient drama and tension filled scenes where you know the main characters will not die no matter what and some awesome scenes filled with special effects abound. Ben is hurt in the leg, Blake almost drowns but her dad saves her, “I love yous” are said and the family is reunited with Ray & Emma giving their marriage another chance (they were about to sign the divorce papers) and oh yeah that heart wrenching moment when amid the destruction a clean and bright US flag is unfurled in slow motion. No mention of Jesus but I’m sure it is implied. And ofcourse, “now what?” is replied with the hero saying “we rebuild”. Oh and Colton Hayes is there for a little bit too.

Overall it is a very watchable movie with lots of great scenes but it is highly predictable. An 8 outta 10, must be seen in large screens to fully appreciate the glory.

A Good Mix

Some people eat to live, while others live to eat. What about you? How far would you travel for the best meal of your life?

I believe in indulging yourself for some really good food that you enjoy atleast once or twice a week. If you can afford it, why not? Life is so stressful and full of crap with your work and family stuff and all that negativity that comes with being in a home to work to home and sleep (repeat ad nauseam till the end of the line) that we need some cheer and fun in our lives once every 3 to 4 days or so.

So I think every weekend atleast, go out and get to a nice place where you can sit down with your friends and or family or a loved one and order some awesome food. Order more of it and try a new dish or two. Maybe just try the dishes and forget about the rice or noodles or bread. Try dishes that you never make at home and try food from other cultures. Do not think too much about what kind it is and be adventurous. Some people stick to the same meals so regularly – I think I would get so bored with it after a while. No matter how good the dishes are. Everyone needs some variety and spontaneity in their lives.

So I would say make it mix of eat to live and live to eat. Live to eat on a few days in a year. Like even if it is just 52 days in a year that will be great. Enjoy it, the world is full of awesome food out there and just waiting for you to taste them. Live a little.

Bournemouth 0 Arsenal 2

Arsenal scored twice in 88 first-half seconds to overwhelm Bournemouth and move level on points with second-placed Tottenham. Mesut Ozil lashed the ball home from 12 yards for the Gunners’ opener, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain drifted in from the right and scored with a low shot. Bournemouth played some slick football at times and had more attempts at goal, but their finishing was poor. Matt Ritchie was the chief culprit, with none of his five shots on target. For Arsenal, who had not won in the league since 3 January, the relief was clear. They controlled the game with early possession before catching Bournemouth with a pair of swift strikes which rendered the contest a foregone conclusion.

Ozil set the Gunners on their way with a powerful shot after Olivier Giroud had headed Aaron Ramsey’s long pass into the German’s feet. And Arsene Wenger’s pre-match assertion that Oxlade-Chamberlain was in form and would offer good balance on the right proved prophetic when the winger came inside and his low shot went in via the far post. Again, Ramsey had a hand in the goal – the Welshman pulling the strings for the Gunners and giving Bournemouth a lesson in turning some eye-catching moves into ruthless attacks. Despite chasing the game in the second half, it took until stoppage time for Bournemouth to test Petr Cech, when the Arsenal keeper made a fine double save to deny Steve Cook and Harry Arter from low shots. Until then, it had been a succession of wayward pops at goal and intricate, but not incisive, approach play.

Arsenal are unbeaten in 23 fixtures against newly-promoted sides, winning 19 and drawing four. Mesut Ozil has now scored in both Premier League matches versus Bournemouth this season with both goals having been assisted by Olivier Giroud. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored his first Premier League goal in 38 appearances. It was his first goal involvement in 26 Premier League games. The Gunners move into 3rd place with 48 points, same as 2nd place Tottenham who have a better goal difference, and 5 points behind leaders Leicester City.

Staycation Is On

Well as I mentioned earlier I am on a staycation / leave from the office. My first planned leave since I joined this organization back in January of last year. I have had a tough last two months with so many extra hours that it tired the crap outta me. Several days during the last 2 months where I had to stretch for 2-3 hours a day and having to go back home via a taxi or Uber if lucky. That is an extra cost for me. I did a quick calculation and saw that I had worked atleast 72 hours more than was needed on a normal 2 month period.

That is a bit too much for me. So I had planned to take a week off and combined with my 2 weekends that would sandwich this 5 day week, it would give me 9 days of leisure and being away from work and not have to worry about emails and crap. So I applied for one and initially I was going to get it but since there is something important coming up on Friday the 12th, I will have to make it a 4 day leave. Nevermind I will still get a few days of rest and immediately after working on Friday I will get 2 more days off because it’s the weekend. So I took it and yesterday I just slept in late and lazed around at home, eating Oreo cookies and catching up on the tv show episodes of the past week that I hadn’t seen yet.

Today, although I was tired having been woken up by 4:30 am by biting mosquitoes and then going to take a leak and not being able to sleep again, I went out for a while. I got a nice sandwich and a frappe and a while later went to get a beer but I started feeling very sleepy and tired and after one bomber bottle and some prawns, I came back home and slept for a couple of hours. In the evening with some coffee I am more alert and I am watching some Sunday football. I have 4 more days off and I will go to largest mall in India – one which I have never been to despite it being open for 3 years or so – Lulu International.

Paranormal Activity : Ghost Dimension

Hmmm, I am not sure how I feel about this franchise now. After 6 movies I feel a bit let down for having stuck to this much maligned (and loved in some ways) franchise as it ended on a lame note. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is a 2015 American 3D found footage supernatural horror film directed by Gregory Plotkin in his directorial debut, and written by Jason Pagan, Andrew Stark, Adam Robitel, and Gavin Heffernan. The movie stars Chris J. Murray, Brit Shaw, Dan Gill, Ivy George & Olivia Taylor Dudley (the hot actress who I just watched in a movie with a similar theme).

The shows us the ending of Paranormal Activity 3 in which Dennis’ spine is crushed by a mysterious force and grandma Lois takes Katie and Kristi upstairs while the same entity takes the camera with them (so a demon who wants all this to be recorded? Right!). They all go into a dark room where a man speaks to the girls about “Toby” and how they are critically important to his plan. 25 years later, in 2013, we have Ryan Fleege, his wife Emily, and their eight-year-old daughter Leila are about to celebrate Christmas, when Ryan’s brother Mike moves in for 2 weeks after breaking up with his girlfriend. Along with them, is Skylar (it’s not explained as to who she is but I guess she is either the nanny or Emily’s sister. Leila seems to be talking to an imaginary friend (who we know is Tony). Mike finds a box of old video tapes, dating from 1988 to 1992. In them contains videos of Kristi and Katie with their mother and her boyfriend Dennis in 1988, whilst others from 1992 are in Lois’s house where the two are practicing supernatural abilities with the mysterious man. While watching one of the videos, Ryan and Mike notice that the girls are seemingly aware of the two’s presence: they are able to foresee Ryan and Mike’s every action as the pair simultaneously watch the video.

Ryan finds an old video camera which when he uses up spiritual beings. He tries to record things overnight to see if these being come up and at night, a black figure arises out of the ground and hovers over Leila for several hours, and she eventually talks to it. Soon, Skylar walks in and checks on Leila, only to be attacked by the spirit. The next night, Ryan tapes Leila sleeping, but a dark and demonic spirit appears on camera and forces him to drop the camera. The following day, Ryan and Emily go out for the night and leave Skyler and Mike to take care of Leila. After experiencing the entity outside, they discover a slab of concrete in the ground with Katie and Kristi and the year 1987 etched in it. They discover their house is built on the same property that Katie and Kristi used to live in before their house burned down in 1992. As days pass Leila becomes less and less talkative and this worries her parents, who call in a priest named Todd. Although he tries his best to talk to the girl, Leila ends up attacking him. Todd says that ‘Toby’ is a demon linked to a cult called The Midwives. Ryan researches the cult, and realizes they killed a family in Nevada related to a boy named Hunter, who was born on the same day as Leila. He also learns that Leila’s blood is needed to finish his transformation into a physical being. One night, Leila’s interaction with Toby leads her to open a doorway to another realm into which she disappears. Ryan and Emily find her soon after, but flee with Leila to a hotel.

They later come back with Todd to cleanse the house and trap the demon. The house starts to shake violently and Todd is dragged away by Toby (and killed I suppose). The family continues the cleansing the demon in a white sheet and finishes reciting a prayer. Leila returns to normal and the demon disappears. But suddenly Skylar vomits blood and some of it spills on Mike and they both die as if by the effects of acid. Leila then flees, and Ryan and Emily chase her upstairs, but Ryan is killed when a large arm impales him through his chest. Leila sprints away into the “portal” in her room with Emily following her; she arrives at Kristi and Katie’s mother’s house in 1988, where she finds a young Katie and finally confronts the human version of Toby. Emily pleads with the demon to spare Leila, but is killed and her body is tossed at the camera as it flips over. Leila identifies the demon “Toby” and the two walk off as the camera cuts off, ending the film.

That ending was as unsatisfying as most and doesn’t offer anything new from a whole spate of movies that I have seen in the horror/supernatural genre. I give this film a 6.5 outta 10!

Naked With Black Socks

Are you comfortable in front of people, or does the idea of public speaking make you want to hide in the bathroom? Why?

I think it depends on the situation. I am a trainer in the BPO industry and I love training and I usually love talking in front of a small crowd of 25-15 people especially if they are receptive to the subject. I love interacting with young people who want to learn and are ready and willing and I like cracking jokes and making laugh and have a good time.

I was just part of a 4 day train the trainer program with focus on more of adult style training and it was fun and a wonderful experience. I do get nervous, especially when I am being judged or something like that but it was fun in the end and I ended up doing quite well and received quite a few rounds of applause and plaudits for my performance. It was truly awesome and I love things like this.

Good Imagery

So the company I work for, has offices in a few other countries as well. Each is shown in the form of a poster that looks like a giant postage stamp with imagery for each nation, painted in the image. They look rather lovely.

The Indian one has an elephant, the Taj and some lamps on water and an orange/saffron hue all over the image.

The Moroccan one has men on camels going through the desert with a kind of fort or something towards one side.

The US one has the Liberty statue a night sky with stars and the Eagle with a dark blue hue.

The Canadian one has the CN tower, depiction of snow and green grass, maple leaves falling from the sky and a moose!

I wish I could take some photos of them but it would be frowned upon.

Arsenal 0 Southampton 0

Arsenal lost further ground in the Premier League title race as they were held to a goalless draw by Southampton. The Gunners had numerous chances but were unable to break down a resilient Saints side, who have now gone four games without conceding. Away keeper Fraser Forster was superb, making a string of impressive saves, including two to deny Mesut Ozil. Arsenal are now winless in four league games and drop to fourth in the table, five points behind leaders Leicester.

Arsene Wenger’s side are also now two points behind both second-placed Manchester City and north London rivals Tottenham, who are third and have a superior goal difference. Worryingly for the Gunners boss, who opted not to recruit another striker in the recent transfer window, his side have now gone three Premier League games without scoring. The result is further proof of the resilience Ronald Koeman has instilled in Southampton, who won 1-0 at Manchester United 10 days ago and are eighth in the table after picking up 10 points in their last four matches. On Boxing Day, Arsenal lost 4-0 at Southampton – their only truly heavy defeat of this league campaign and a result that cost them the chance to go top of the Premier League at Leicester’s expense.

The Foxes’ victory over Liverpool on Tuesday meant that Arsenal would not have gone top even with a win over Southampton, but this will be just as frustrating a result as the one they suffered at St Mary’s. Credit must go to Koeman’s side for their defensive display but that does not excuse the Gunners for their pedestrian start and the chances they missed. Ozil should have scored twice in the first half but Forster was alert and nimble to block his close-range shots and in the second half a host of players had good opportunities, including Olivier Giroud, who had a shot and header tipped away, and Laurent Koscielny who headed over from six yards out. Alexis Sanchez was typically lively in his first league start since the end of November, but was also unable to find a way past the Saints keeper as the Gunners made it three games without a goal for the first time since February 2009.

A Bird, A Plane, No It’s Roshanman

You get to choose one superpower. Pick one of these, and explain your choice:

And here are the choices given below

the ability to speak and understand any language
the ability to travel through time
the ability to make any two people agree with each other

Hmmm, let me think. I guess I would pick the ability to travel through time because that would be so cool compared to the other three. Going back into the past to see what it was like and what really happened vs what is told to us. Or going forwards into the future and finding out how things turn out. How exciting!

Imagine seeing a historically important event in person or influencing the course of history or changing someone’s views or taking part in a groundbreaking event. Or influencing what the future will be by changing the timeline. Man, I would love to be able to do that.

Not That Roaring But Still A Good Laugh

What was the last thing that gave you a real, authentic, tearful, hearty belly laugh? Why was it so funny?

So I am a fan of the DC Comics tv series franchise which currently has the following tv shows on the air right now :

  • Arrow
  • The Flash
  • Supergirl
  • Legends Of Tomorrow

Although I haven’t read more than a handful of comics about these superheroes, so a lot of them are new to me, I have gotten to know them as the characters played by the talented actors who portray them on screen. So it was a hilarious moment in episode 2 of Legends of Tomorrow when, after traveling back in time to 1975 and meeting up with his younger self, along with Jackson and Sara Lance. Noticing that there seemed to be a bit of flirting going on between Sara and his younger self, the mostly serious Professor Martin Stein says that he didn’t want young Martin to be “tempted by a sexy assassin from the future” and not meet his to be wife for the first time.

And Sara says “Awwww, you think I’m sex…” when Martin interupts with “Don’t finish that sentence!”  I found that hilarious and got a good laugh outta that one!
