Larry Crowne

Larry Crowne is a 2011 American romantic comedy film starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. The film was produced and directed by Hanks, who co-wrote its screenplay with Nia Vardalos. The story was inspired by Hanks’ time studying at Chabot College. The film tells the story of Larry Crowne, a middle-aged man who unexpectedly loses his job and returns to education. It was released in the United States on July 1, 2011. The movie stars Hanks & Julia Roberts.

After 20 years in the Navy as a cook, Larry Crowne, has been working is fired from his job at a big-box store due to a lack of college education, despite his seniority and exemplary work. He is informed that this is due to restructuring at the corporate level and his lack of a degree means he cannot be promoted. A divorced man who lives in a house on his own Larry  cannot find a job and could lose his house. Larry’s neighbor, Lamar, advises him to enroll at East Valley Community College and get an education. Larry sells his SUV and buys a scooter from Lamar. He signs up for classes in Economics, taught by Dr. Ed Matsutani, and is suggested to take up Speech, taught by Mercedes Tainot.

He initially struggles and Mercedez is initially hostile to her class as she struggles in her married life because she is unhappily married to Dean, a former professor-turned-writer-turned-blogger. In reality, Dean spends his days looking at internet porn. Larry makes new friends when Talia, a young student, introduces her to the scooter club at the college. She also has him change his hair style, clothes and Larry’s friend Frank, who runs the diner, offers him a job to help make ends meet, as Larry had been a Navy cook. After a night with Dean goes horribly wrong, Mercedes is left alone at a bus stop, where Larry and his scooter gang notice her. Larry offers her a ride home, which Mercedes reluctantly accepts. On their way home they witness Dean getting arrested for drunk driving.

At her front door, Mercedes offers Larry to kiss her and they hug (Mercedes thinks that they are kissing). She wants to have sex as well, but Larry declines, not wanting to take advantage of her inebriated state. When Dean arrives home the following morning he finds all of his possessions on the front lawn. Using his knowledge picked up in economics class, Larry begins a strategic foreclosure and plans to move to an apartment. Mercedez sees Larry with Talia and thinks they are romantically involved and cools to Larry, making him disappointed as he had been excited about Mercedes’ interest in him. He goes back to concentrating on his studies and his new job instead. Mercedes runs into Talia, who is telling Frances, her English teacher, that she will be dropping out of college to start a thrift store.

Mercedes finds out that Talia and Larry are just friends. At finals Larry aces his topic and gets an A+ from Mercedes, who is now happier in her life, and has rediscovered her passion for teaching. Mercedes meets Larry at the diner and tells him that he was an excellent student to which he replies that he had an excellent teacher. At the end of the movie Larry, who is no longer in speech class, asks Mercedes out on a breakfast date to which she comes to his apartment which is above Talia & her boyfriend’s new thrift store.

It’s a simple, uncomplicated feel-good movie with some humour and romance in it. It’s not ground breaking and nothing that like one of the major romantic comedies that stand out much. But it’s a fun movie and I was thoroughly into it. With a great cast that also includes Bryan Cranston, Pam Grier, a pre-fame Rami Malek, Cedric the Entertainer, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wilmer Valderrama, Ian Gomez & George Takie! A solid 7.5 outta 10!

A TV Show I’d Love To See Get Made

Write about a TV show or documentary you’d love to see get made.

It’s no secret that I love Star Trek. You just have to look at my posts here, on Facebook etc to know that I love this franchise and wish that I was living in a futuristic era based on Star Trek and beyond. I want more Star Trek in my life. I know that Discovery is on but the fanbase is divided on the show.

We have a new Jean-Luc Picard show coming up and maybe a Section 31 show as well from the franchise. While the Picard show is something that I am looking forward to but I want more. What I really want is a show set much out more in the future. The reason is we can do a lot more in terms of special effects and making the technology of the show’s timeline look a lot of fantastical since the early 2000s. Hence, we should forget about the 24th century era where Nemesis ended and move on to 100 years past it or more.

Bring in a new cast and crew and create new ideas and show more exciting things that are rooted in scientific possibilities. Get some good science fiction writers & actual scientists to boost the future tech and otherworldly science credibility and get some good stories out there. Explore what we can see and beyond. I want a show in the vein of The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine. And give the show’s producers more money.

Another Vampire Shift Week

Well, it back to work today after a weekend. And it’s back to the 9:30 pm to 6:30 am shift again this week. Not that I mind so much. For one it seems, I know it only seems that way, that I have more time at home for some reason. I think in reality it’s because in this shift I do not extend my hours. I am loving that!

The downside is that I am usually very tired on Saturdays to do anything. This Saturday I reached home by 8:30 am and then watched Friends for a bit before falling asleep and I woke up at 2:30 pm. Then I just had a coffee and waited till 4 for some biscuits and more coffee and then watched Youtube videos until nightime and had a quick dinner of chappatis and homemade chicken curry that mom made. After that I watched more tv and a movie. I went to bed and then on Sunday I woke up by 9 am and went out by 12. I went to Kahawa for a small burger and a shake.

I read a book for a while at the cafe and then went shopping. I had to buy some talcum powder, deodorant, sugar, coffee powder, popcorn, biscuits, chips (both Pringle & Lays), my Sunday night double movie snack of M&Ms (peanuts), a 1L juice and peanuts. That done, I had some wings & onions rings from Burger King and then came on home. At home it was more Friends, a light nap and then coffee much later with some Lays. I skipped dinner but watched two movies with those M&Ms and went to sleep much late at night.

And now it’s off to work after I shave & shower.

What A Trek!

In 1986-87 there was a short lived sitcom called What A Country which was a Mind Your Language ripoff. But the show had a Star Trek connection as the cast included former tennis player Vijay Amitraj who had a cameo in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) as a starship captain Joel Randolph, the late George Murdock who was “God” in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and as Admiral Hanson in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Best of Both Worlds (as well as a recurring character Dr. Salik in Battlestar Galactica) and Ada Maris who played Captain Erika Hernandez in Star Trek Enterprise.

The Great Indian Food Experiment

What’s the first dish that you cooked on your own? Was it good?

I first cooked eggs and in omelet form. Then perhaps scrambled and later on as bulls-eye / fried eggs. But the real test for every guy or girl in India is Maggi noodles. Which are ramen like noodles which you can add the powdered flavour or tastemaker as the noodles are being cooked in the boiling water.

Now the real experiment in cooking for me, and a whole lot of Indians in urban centers, starts with Maggi noodles. Ramen is so versatile that once you have the basic stuff from packets, the world is now your stage. You can add almost anything to it and see how it works and tastes.

Eggs, hen’s or duck’s is what I would usually add to my Maggi noodles (no matter what flavour packet it comes with). Onions, green peas, peppers, carrots are some of the vegetables that you can add to enhance some more taste. You can add cooked chicken or beef or fish or pork and it will become even more yummy.

Mushrooms are another options. Experiment and enjoy is what I say.

Master Your IT Network With These Handy Tips

Whether you need a new IT network at home or in your office, setting one up from scratch can be quite daunting. Especially if you don’t have much technical experience with IT or the internet. Most people don’t have a clue where to even start.

It doesn’t always have to be that difficult, though. Creating a strong network that can help to keep you connected is achievable by anyone these days – you don’t have to be an IT whizz kid anymore! As long as you follow these next few tips, you should find that you are able to get either your office or home connected without too many bumps in the road.

Get Professional Help If Needed

One of the first things to remember is that it is always possible to get some professional help when setting up an IT network. This might not always be necessary, but if you are a complete novice when it comes to tech, then you might benefit from contacting a company like WGroup. They’ll be able to offer you plenty of help and advice, and might even be able to send someone around to provide hands-on help. If you do find that you get very frustrated trying to set up your network, make sure you do give the professionals a call!

Shop Around For Good Provider Deals

You will need to find a supplier to go with before you do start setting up your network. These days, there are so many different internet providers out there that it can be very difficult to decide which one is the best to go with. One of the best ways to decide is to shop around so that you have plenty of chance to compare deals. You’ll be able to take a look at what various companies can offer you for a price, and that should help you work out which deal will be the best value for money for you. You’ll now find a lot of comparison websites that make choosing the best internet provider even easier.

Think About The Optimum Connection Method

Once you are all ready with a provider and they have sent you a router, you need to think about how you will connect your computer. You have three options: Wi-Fi, with an ethernet cable, and Bluetooth. The majority of devices can now be connected all of these ways. If you need high internet speeds, then you might want to opt for using an ethernet cable, as that will allow you to transfer a lot more data. For those of you who want to use your devices all around the house, then it could be best to go for Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as they are the more mobile options.

Carefully Consider Router Placement

Make sure that you place your router in an optimum space. This little gadget isn’t always the most aesthetically pleasing, so quite a few households tend to put theirs out of the way, like in a cupboard. Unfortunately, though, that could lead to weak Wi-Fi. Ideally, you need to put it in the middle of your home in a location that is as open as possible. It’s also best to place it away from any walls, although sometimes that might be difficult to achieve. Don’t forget to also place it away from any appliances that could cause interference, like a home phone or microwave.

Secure It Well

It is absolutely important to make sure that your IT network is as secure as possible. That will prevent any hackers from getting into the network and stealing your important data and information. When you first set up the network your provider will provide you with login details. It is crucial that you change these so that you can create a cryptic password that will be very difficult for others to guess.

Protect All Smart Devices

As well as securing your network, you also need to make sure all of the connected devices are protected as well. You should be able to password protect them so that only those with the log-in details can access them. Installing anti-virus software will also be a big help as well. Your internet network will then be a lot safer once all of your devices have been well protected.

Getting a new IT network up and running doesn’t have to be a huge challenge. Using all of these handy tips should help you do it successfully. Remember, if you do encounter any issues, you can always call in the pros.

Bate Borisov 1 Arsenal 0

Alexandre Lacazette was sent off as Arsenal slumped to a disappointing first-leg defeat against Bate Borisov in the Europa League last 32. Stanislav Dragun nodded home Igor Stasevich’s free-kick for the game’s only goal just before half-time. Lacazette had a goal disallowed early in the second half before being sent off for elbowing Aleksandar Filipovic. A resolute Bate held on for the win, their first over an English side at home in European competition.

The Belarusian champions will now take a slender lead to Emirates Stadium for the second leg next Thursday. It was no more than Bate deserved as Arsenal faded quickly after a bright start on a bumpy pitch and sub-zero conditions in Belarus. Aliaksei Baga’s side were playing their first competitive match since December and doggedly held on to their lead in the second half. Arsenal, in contrast, managed just three shots on target despite enjoying nearly 77% possession. Unai Emery will have hoped the resumption of the Europa League would have given his side some momentum after an inconsistent few weeks.

The Gunners’ final Europa League group game against FK Qarabag in December extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 22 games. But since then Emery’s side have lost six out of 13 matches, going out of both domestic cups in the process. Emery responded to that patchy form by naming a strong side for the game in Belarus, showing just two changes from the team that won at Huddersfield last weekend. There was early promise as Henrikh Mkhitaryan drew a smart stop from Denis Scherbitski within 90 seconds. Further chances for Lacazette and Alex Iwobi followed, but the Gunners quickly deteriorated.

Teaching Your Kids About Politics At Home

No matter how much you actually enjoy discussing and talking about politics, there’s no denying that it’s going to have a huge impact on your children’s lives. Sure, it affects them now as well, but perhaps even more so once they grow up – and, as their parent, it’s your job to make sure that they have the tools to learn and read up on it.

While you won’t really be able to shape their political opinion too much, you can always ensure that they are informed little citizens who take pride in staying up to date on everything that is going on in our society. That way, they will do a much better job once the time is ripe for them to go to the voting box as well and you can consider it a job well done.

Here is a handful of tips to teach your children a bit more about politics while they’re still young and start to build their knowledge as early as possible. They will of course learn all about this in school as well but the more knowledgeable they are once the discussions start in the classroom, the more they will also have to contribute, in the end.

First: Talking about politics at home

Although it may seem like your child isn’t always listening to what you have to say, they are still paying attention to what you’re doing and subconsciously allowing you to shape their behavior. They’d never admit to it, though so don’t let them know that you’re aware of your power.

In order to make your kids a bit more interested in politics, you will need to set a good example. Start by talking about what’s happening in society today, involve them in the conversations when you’re discussing politics, and allow them to form different point of views as well.

Politics are, after all, not black and white and it’s perfectly alright to share a few opinions from various sides of the political spectrum – and it might open for a few healthy conversations at home.

Share your own opinion on the matter, first of all, give them the tools to learn more about democracy, and let them know that you expect them to have an opinion of their own.

It might be a good idea to point to a few real-time examples while you’re teaching them about politics, by the way, to make it easier for them to connect the dots; if something is happening abroad, for example, ask them about how this works in your country and whether or not they think the system is working.

Next: Give them the tools to learn about politics

When you want them to learn more about politics and have an opinion of their own, you will obviously need to make sure that they have the tools to understand a bit more as well. It’s so easy to make this feel like homework, though, and especially because they will learn about this in school as well.

Try to find ways to make it a bit more fun to learn about politics by making it relevant to their everyday lives. What the pupils are allowed to do at school is, after all, also a matter of politics and it will affect them directly. If your kid is complaining about something at school, encourage them to talk to the administration about it and get other kids involved by signing a petition for or against something.

If your home has a strong focus on religion, it’s going to be interesting for them to look at how the combination of god and politics has been relevant throughout history as well as today. This is something that directly affects another important part of their lives and, as long as you play your card rights, you’ll have a great opportunity here in terms of making politics relevant to them and helping them to understand how this works in other countries as well.

So many conflicts across the world have a root in religion, after all, and understanding this will give them an excellent starting point when it comes to learning more about politics. They will have a deeper understanding when they’re sitting in those history classes as well, by the way, and may be able to contribute a bit more during discussions in class.

It’s the kind of stuff that’s going to help them out a lot in the future – both in terms of their education and when it comes to understanding how the world works a bit better.

Decisions that will affect your kid’s life directly tend to trigger their interest a lot more than distant discussions on whether or not the healthcare system should be allocated more money – no matter how important it actually is.

Talk about the future of politics in your country

There is no denying that the future will have a bigger impact on your children lives than it will have on yours. Focusing on what they can do right now in order to make things better in the future and shape the country, in general, may make them a bit more interested in politics and, hopefully, more eager to get involved and start learning as well as trying to make the world a better place.

Start by talking about all the discussions on the climate changes, for example, and hear their point of view on this. It could be interesting for your as well, though, as they’re undoubtedly learning about this in school and could be able to teach you something new as well – which, of course, makes the discussions flow a bit easier.

Try to be open to hearing their opinions, first of all, and talk about how they would like things to be in the future. What can they do right now in order to make sure that the country is a bit better in 10 or 20 years? To them, it might not immediately seem like there is so much they can do but try to make them understand that even small actions can have big consequences.

Anyone who has been around for a while may get a bit cynical when it comes to how big of an impact they can have, regardless of the generation they belong to. Increased corruption and a severe lack of accountability lead many to doubt whether actual change can be done through elections at all anymore.

Millennials are, in fact, quite disappointed with the political landscape that’s been laid out for them; only 29 % says the country is moving in the right direction, while almost 50 % says unsatisfied or extremely unsatisfied with the President they elected, according to a study into Millennials and voting.

The election of 2016 opened the eyes of many, leading them to question how they can stay true to their views and ideology, as well as finding the right kind of camp for their political opinions. Because Millennials are actually politically active – they would just prefer to avoid the term activism.

Millennials still believe in voting

So how do the younger generation show their interest in politics these days? They launch e-petitions instead, scrambling together as many signatures as possible, and reaching out directly to legislators through social media. Twitter has been a wonderful thing with regards to getting the younger generation involved and interested; new technology such as Smartmatic is even making the voting process safer for future voters.

Millennials do believe that voting is the only way to make a change, despite their dismal opinions on the latest election.

Studies have also found that they’re putting their disappointment into action instead, with as much as two-thirds of the respondents having voted in the 2016 election.

Despite their frustration with those currently in office as well as the results of last year’s election, they still believe voting “will lead to the change they want to see,” and the public can look forward to new and ground-breaking ways of being involved in politics and sharing our opinions – also when giving our votes.

They choose different ways of activism than the previous generations, and the study found that they are more interested in ground-level activity than the national scene; 41 % states that they support local causes, compared to the 19 % who is interested in national ones. When it comes to national politics, It’s perhaps not the game that needs to be changed, after all, as much as the players who are participating.

While you may not think that you’ll be able to shape your children’s view on politics that much, you will definitely be able to trigger their interest a bit more and make sure that they head to the voting box when it’s their time.

It means that you’re doing an excellent job in raising informed and active citizens, after all, and you’ll be shaping the future a bit as well by making sure that the following generations are both interested and informed when it comes to politics.

How To Ensure That You’re Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep is one of those things that determines whether you have a good or bad day, and it is so important to make sure that you’re getting those Zs in if you want to do great. However, some of us just struggle with it. We either can’t drift off to sleep as our heads are full of anxieties, or we constantly wake up in the night, unable to get into a really deep sleep. Whatever your problems are, getting a good night’s sleep is vital, and we’ve put down some simple tips so that you can get some well-deserved rest in, and begin your day feeling refreshed!

Limit your pre-sleep screen time

We’re all guilty of this one, but scrolling through your Twitter and Instagram feeds before you go to sleep could be the reason that you’re struggling to doze off. Not only is the light from your screen likely to keep you up for longer than it should do, but there have also been some studies linking mobile phone use before sleeping to depression and loneliness. Whilst you can put your phone on night mode in most cases, and apps are now being released that apply blue light filters to your screen, it may be a good idea to just give the phone a miss. Read a book, or just relax and talk to your loved ones. It could help you in more ways than one!

Get a good mattress and bed frame

Getting a good bed is key to ensuring that you’re getting enough sleep, and there are many people out there who are trying to sleep on 20 year old mattresses every night, and wondering why they aren’t providing much comfort. You should be changing your mattress every 8 years, and it’s also worth looking into the different types out there (some prefer memory foam, and others need more support for their backs). Buying a sturdy bed frame is also important, as a squeaky old frame could be waking you up every time you move in the night. You spend almost half of your life asleep, so it is certainly worthwhile investing in these things!

Block out the natural light

If you’re trying to get in some sleep, but you struggle due to your environment, then you may need to get some better blackout curtains or blinds. This is particularly the case if you’re working night shifts and trying to sleep during the day, as it can be difficult to get your body into a state of total relaxation and sleep if the sunlight is coming through your blinds. An investment in some of these may not put you out a lot financially, but it will help you to see a real change in your sleeping habits. Say goodbye to those annoying street lights – and the sun – and hello to a good night’s (or day’s) sleep.

Clean, clean, and clean some more

OK, some people out there haven’t washed their bedsheets since the dawn of time, but you may also be guilty of not cleaning your bedding enough, either. Many sources state that you are supposed to wash your sheets once a week (or once every two weeks, in some cases) but two weeks is the maximum time you should go without changing your bedding. An unclean bed can be detrimental to your sleep as you will be breathing in bacteria and dust, which settles on your sheets and can cause allergies. Don’t forget to vacuum your room as much as you can, and create a great environment to enable sleep.

Get a good routine in place

One of the other problems that you may be having is that you simply don’t have a good routine, and your body isn’t used to going to sleep and waking up at certain times daily. You should aim to go to sleep at a similar time each night (though it doesn’t have to be exact) and you should also try to get up at the same time, too, which shouldn’t be too difficult if you have to go to work in the morning. On the weekends we all (well, some of us) enjoy a lie in, but try not to sleep too much over these two days, as it could end up adding a spanner into the works of your routine. Decide a rough time to sleep and to wake up, and try to stick to it!

So, if you want to ensure that you’re getting enough sleep, why not try out these simple tips? You’ll be glad that you did when you feel refreshed, and ready to face the day!

Do You Love Being Hands On?

If you love being hands on, then welcome to an article that’s going to change your life. You’re either a hands on and very forward person in life, or you’re someone who likes to relax and take the back seat. But life is all about taking risks, being hands on, and getting the most out of every situation you’re in. Now, think about what situation you’re in all of the time, your work situation!? It can often feel like you’re spending too much time at work, and that it consumes your life to a point where you’re doing nothing else but thinking about it. If you’ve got to this point in your life, or perhaps you’ve been there before, you’ll know how stressful it can be. The more time you spend at work, and actually overthinking everything to do with it, the more you should realise that’s time to change career. So if you’re hands on, and looking for a total change of career, here are our top ones that we think will suit you!

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is the best career line you can go into if you’re looking for something that’s super long term, has a lot of money in it, and has a lot of responsibility to it. You could think about something like lean manufacturing that’s super hands on, and gives you a lot of room for responsibility. To get into this you could take on a lean manufacturing distance learning degree, which would put you in a better position to be employed in a higher position. This is very much an engineering based role, so you’re going to have to have a good head to do this, and a practical thinking one. There’s always the risk that something could really go wrong with this one, and it could all fall on your hands. But, if you do it right, this role is super rewarding and fulfilling.

Trade Work

Trade work is most definitely the perfect career if you’re hands on, because you literally will be doing something all of the time! There are so many different trades that you could go into as well, from window fitting to brick laying, it’s always said that’s good to have a trade under your belt to fall back on. Plus, out of all of them, this is probably going to be the easiest to settle into. All you have to do is start out as a labourer and work your way up through the profession by gaining experience. Just get looking on the internet, or perhaps you know people who are in trade at the minute, and start your journey towards a super hands on career.

Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is super hands on, you just have to have the mindset to actually do it. You have to like being active, and you have to want to make a big difference to the people who are working with you. To get into this you could go for a university degree course,or even just a college course! But again, it’s a lifelong career with many different paths that you could go down later on down the line!

Lonely For Valentine’s Day

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day, Rosh?

Well I am working from 9:30 pm till 6:30 am the next day but most of the day is wide open to do….absolutely nothing!

I will probably just watch a movie after I wake up and have had coffee. No lunch as I have been doing for these kinda shifts where I wake up late in the afternoon. A snack with my coffee, probably biscuits or something light like that as I watch the movie. Then onto the internet for Facebook browsing, watching Youtube etc. Dinner at home before hailing an Uber to get to the office.

Nothing else. I will not have things in red scattered around. I would love to be able to have someone to buy those Valentine’s day special chocolates and cards and gifts for. Have a nice dinner for two in a romantic setting, candles, soft music, blah blah blah. It’s been so long since I’ve made a woman feel special or being felt special myself.

The Tech That’s Making Driving Quicker And Safer

Although it is said that the traffic problems in the US are worse than most other places in the world, the road vehicles and roads themselves are much safer than they were just 40 years ago. Technology has made a difference to the safety when you are driving, much of which would have been tried out on racing cars first. Formula 1 is credited with many things that are now on our cars, including rear view mirrors. It was an F1 engineer in the 1950s that realized it would be safer for the racing drivers if they could see what was coming up behind them, and before this, road vehicles did not have this mirror that we now take for granted and use all the time.

Technology is continuing to advance all the time, and the roads and vehicles are benefitting from this.

Smart Highways

Technology has been developed in the UK that by using artificial intelligence and computer vision has enabled them to alter traffic paths. It is a pilot scheme at the moment and has only been running a few months but appears to be very successful. There are sensors that cover a 50-mile radius and they detect areas of congestion. This allows them to alter the flow of traffic and reduce bottlenecks by changing the traffic light signals. They will also prioritize the flow of traffic for emergency vehicles and public transport.

A company in Pittsburgh has come up with some AI that gives the traffic lights a certain amount of autonomy to decide when to change color. That information is then sent to other intersections so that they can react accordingly to the data, which is in a constant feedback loop. It is claimed that this technology can cut the waiting time at intersections by up to 40%, and as it is estimated that Americans spend 102 hours per year in traffic jams, that is quite a lot of time saved.

In Kansas, a startup has produced prefabricated concrete sections that are embedded with digital technology and fiber optics. They interlock with each other and work a bit like the touchpad of a laptop. The slabs are able to detect the weight and speed of vehicles and should there be an accident, they will inform the emergency services immediately. They will be perfect for electric vehicles and drivers will never be without wifi while driving on these roads.

It is hoped that these smarter highways will result in fewer accidents, especially where trucks and larger vehicles are concerned as they often cause the most damage. In the meantime, until the roads become smarter than the drivers, if you are involved in an accident with a large vehicle, a trucker accident lawyer is the best person to help you sort out the legal side of these matters. Hopefully as these new measures are rolled out more, that won’t be an issue you have to worry about, though.

Charge Vehicles While Driving Them

Electric vehicles are the future that is one thing there is no doubt about. However, some people are concerned about how long the range of the battery will be and if there will be enough charging points along highways to cope with the large numbers of cars. Dallas and Denver are trialing technology that will charge cars while on the move, so this will get over all over those problems.

This will have an effect on the battery technology of road vehicles. They will require minimal storage capacity, which will reduce the cost of the batteries and bring down the overall price of electric vehicles. It works with two wire coils, one acting as a transmitter and the other as a receiver. The magnetic fields these create produce an AC current, which is then used to power the cars.  It is said to be similar to the technology used for charging smartphones. Sweden and South Korea are already using something similar to power their public buses.

Is China leading The Way?

While many cities in America are trying various things to make the roads a safer place to be, it seems that China may be the first country to build the world’s first smart transportation system.

In a city that is about 250 miles south of Beijing, with a population of 7 million people, they are building a smart road that will have everything sandwiched into three layers. It will be finished off with a transparent surface that will allow sunlight to power all the lights on it as well as 800 homes. This all comes from just a one-kilometer stretch of road.

It will have sensors to monitor the traffic flow and speeds, as well as notifying the emergency services if an accident occurs. It will also charge electric vehicles as they travel along it. As China accounts for as many electric vehicle sales as the total for the rest of the world, it should be no surprise that they are investing heavily in the technology they need.

Changes To Road Vehicles

As we go about our day-to-day lives, a few changes on the roads might not be very apparent, However, changes to road vehicles are much more noticeable. The big change, of course, is the development of electric vehicles and this is continuing to happen worldwide. From motorcycles to heavy goods vehicles, electric versions of them all are being produced, and generally, they are being very well accepted.

Then there are the driverless cars, which no doubt will make it to our roads at some point. At the moment though, drivers still like to be in control and they are likely to take a little longer to be accepted. It is thought that driverless buses could be one of the first of these vehicles, and when the public use those and see that they are safe, then they will be more likely to consider buying a driverless car.

Most other changes to road vehicles are mechanical and not visual. Things to reduce the emissions are very popular at the moment, but the styling is not changing a great deal at all. For most drivers, all they want is to be able to get from A to B is the shortest time safely, and they will leave all the technical bits to the experts.

Graveyard aka Vampire Shift

So I am back to doing a late night or overnight shift. You also call it a graveyard shift or as I love to call it the vampire shift!

This week I will be doing the 9:30 pm to 6:30 am shift. I also did it for last Thursday & Friday. The last two hours of which I will be the only one from my team and it can get lonely. But I have set it up so that I get some of my work done for 90 of those minutes and that is usually the work that I like to do without much of a bother in between. That works out for me that none of the others will be there at that time.

The last 30 minutes of the shift will be when I take the second 30 minute break of the day. I have not been taking my full 60 minutes break the last week but I guess I can do that this way. That 30 minutes, which will be from 6 am onwards will be when I go to the cafeteria and get my breakfast and coffee. Works out fine.
