Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Carol Danvers. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the twenty-first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet also contributing to the screenplay. Brie Larson stars as Danvers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law. Set in 1995, the story follows Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in the center of a galactic conflict between two alien worlds.

Ok, so the story is your basic origin story of how Captain Marvel got her powers , where is she from and what makes her “her”. This is the basic methodology of all the Marvel superhero movies and superhero movies in general. So how does the movie fare, in my opinion?

  • Carol Danvers seems to be the least fleshed out superhero I can recall. And that’s because once she gets the powers, by unintentionally absorbing an exploding Kree power energy core of Dr. Lawson/Mar-vell’s experimental craft, it seems like no one can beat her. She is never in any grave danger. She can do it all, fly in space, use those awesome powers from her fists that can pummel any unsuspecting powerful alien into space. There are no high stakes and even the fight scenes become a bit stale. For a human, who remembers hardly anything of earth and was genetically modified by the Kree, she sure can find her way around 1995 America. Her stealing clothes and a bike all was too easy.
  • Watching Samuel L Jackson & Clark Gregg de-aged digitally for this film which is set in 1995 was weird – for 10 seconds and then it became natural. Good job effects team. Infact almost all the effects in the film is top notch. I only remember once scene in which it seems Marvel was a cartoon/animation figure for a few seconds while the rest is all awesome.
  • The Skrulls are an really good alien race to see in this film. I felt empathetic to their plight as refugees searching for a new home and I would like to see more of them. They are interesting as are the Kree in it. To be honest, I’d like to see a series or a couple of films set in the planet Hala. They do have an interesting dynamic going on.
  • Goose is a scene stealer – looks like a ginger cat but is infact an alien being who can swallow large items including people, as inside it is a pocket dimension inside her body and swallows the Tesseract before scratching Fury’s left eye, permanently blinding it. I did not see that one coming.
  • Annette Benning, Ben Mendelsohn, Lee Pace returning as Ronan the Accuser & Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau (Danver’s best friend and fellow pilot) are all good as supporting cast members with a lot to do. Jude Law as Carol’s Kree mentor as the lead villain in the film plays a duel role as proud mentor and having a deceptive agenda against Carol.
  • The use of 90s rock music and a couple of rap/hip-hop songs as well as some 90s tech and BlockBuster seem to give us a 90s vibe. I miss the 90s!

Overall I didn’t feel as engaged in the film as I usually am in a Marvel film. I thought there were no bonding of the character Captain Marvel to the audience as she is just lucky to be powerful and she will protect what she must but is less fleshed out than most others. Her powers and abilities makes her almost too powerful and that is kind of a let down. I give the film top marks for the special effects but a 7.5 outta 10!

Movie In Lulu Mall & Taco Bell Lunch

After 10 months I finally went to Lulu Mall again. I just haven’t wanted to go there in a long while and the main reason is the crowds. I hate crowds, I hate too many people walking around for no reason and blocking your way as they walk in a horizontal row and you can’t pass by. I hate the endless posing around for selfies and stupid, silly smiles and pouts (ugh, get a life). I hate the kids running around unsupervised and making a ruckus. But, I wanted to watch Captain Marvel and since my preferred theater is Lulu Gold PVR (since Cinepolis had to close down due to violating the local fire & safety laws) which is in the mall.

I woke up by 7 am and got ready by 9 am and waited to catch an Uber which would take me to Edapally. I got there and started getting a bad coughing fit because of some phlegm that was caught in my chest. I cleared my throat and coughed a few times and then looked for a cafe. They have Cafe Coffee Day, Costa Coffee and McDonalds and as Costa Coffee was kinda crowded I went into McDonalds. I had only a little cornflakes for breakfast and a coffee but I was hungry and definitely needed a coffee after all that coughing. So I ordered a Sausage (chicken as there are no beef or pork products in Indian McDonalds) and Egg McMuffin and a medium cappuccino. Ok, McDonald’s now I get the hype. I really liked both.

After that I went to the washroom and then walked around a bit before it was just 10:20 am and I went to the PVR section, showed them my e-ticket and went to wait for a few minutes. I then got an ice tea (at the counter I was in there had some problem with the soft drinks fountain and only the Lipton ice tea was available. Now, I actually like ice tea and so I got that and a bottle of water and went to sit in my seat. As usual I had the next seat empty (even though it was booked) and there were were a few seats empty. I watched the movie and it finished at 1:15 pm, perfect time for lunch.

I had wanted to go to Taco Bell ever since I heard about the inauguration of the very first TB outlet in Kerala. I finally got my chance. I went through the menu, not knowing what to get so I finally selected a chicken fajita burrito with Mexican fries and a Pepsi. The burrito and fries were really good and now I have another fast food done. I can’t wait for more from them. I walked a bit in the mall and left by 2:30 pm and was home by 3pm!
