What Would You Do if You Won the Lottery?

What Would You Do if You Won the Lottery?

How much money? Let’s say that the money is Rs.609 million or Rs.60.9 crore; that is the largest lottery available in India accordingly to a Google search that I just did. So Rs. 60.9 crores is a huge amount of money. I would even be happy with 1 or 2 crore but for the sake of this blog post let’s take it that I do win that amount of money as lottery prize winnings.

Ok, so the tax will be around 30%, which be around 18 crores. Whew! that means I only get Rs.42.9 crores to take home. Still that is a huge, huge sum of money. Or what I could do is give some of it for charity meaning that it’s tax deductible and I can save some money there. But still I got over 42 crores! I am gonna get a huge mansion, decked out with all the bells and whistles. Luxury sofas, bed, massagers, huge pool, movie theatre, cars, Harley Davidsons, etc etc. And I’d get another one, a much bigger mansion and I’ll give that to my parents and sister and her family.

Then I would travel the world, on a big luxury liner and take my parents on a big ole holiday so they can see the places as well. Europe, parts of Asia, Australia and North America. And then I would retire and live out the rest of my life without worrying about money as I would have invested the rest of the cash and live off a luxury life with it.

Beer Types – Stout

Stout is a dark, top-fermented beer with a number of variations, including dry stout, oatmeal stout, milk stout, and imperial stout. Many great stouts are complex and low in alcohol, with beautiful roundness and a touch of roastiness. The dry versions are appetizing and quenching; the sweeter styles are silky and well rounded, perfect for an evening of food and drink.

No beer style is more intertwined with a single country than dry stouts are with Ireland. The country’s brewing culture has been traced back about five millennia. But it is the past 300 hundred years, and the well-known brewing revolution in England, that directly influenced the craft and commerce of Ireland.

Before anyone ever gave us a lesson on how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness, we were all very much obsessed with the Porter style. And stout basically emerged as a sort of stronger porter (originally called “Stout Porter”), eventually taking off as its own style with more depth thanks to the use of roasted barley. Irish stouts are classically dry, meaning you won’t get much in the way of overpowering malty sweetness (or hops, for that matter), but you may very well get flavors of chocolate and coffee or toffee swimming around in that dark malt profile. As in most stout, carbonation is very low (and often supplemented with nitrogen for a finer, creamier overall mouthfeel).

Stout’s complexity makes it an excellent companion for a wide variety of foods. Stout can be paired with chocolate, meat prepared almost any way, and oysters.

Newspaper Waste

When I go down to the lobby waiting for a food or grocery delivery or to pick up my mail/packages one of the things I notice that is piling up and pushed to one corner are newspapers. Every few days I check them out and find that they dates keep changing but the pile is still there. For example, this evening when I went to pickup the groceries from the delivery guy, I checked out the big pile of newspapers – some of them were from Monday & Tuesday. Someone is not picking up their paper!

This has been going on for a while. I guess someone, perhaps the president or secretary of the building is getting them thrown away after it keeps piling up. I have no clue as to why you would still be subscribing to the newspapers if you do not plan to read them or even pick them up and take them to your apartment. It’s a waste of paper and it’s ridiculous that they are just being wasted.

I guess in a few years the newspaper industry as a physical paper will eventually die down. It may take a lot longer in the case of developing nations like India because older people and people in the below poverty levels will want to get the newspaper as they cannot get used to digital media or don’t have the means to. But it will eventually die down someday.

Arsenal Win Community Shield 2020

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a superb goal and netted the winning penalty in a shootout as Arsenal beat Premier League champions Liverpool in the Community Shield at an empty Wembley Stadium. His curling strike gave FA Cup winners Arsenal the lead in the first half before Liverpool substitute Takumi Minamino equalised after the break. Minamino’s flicked pass to Mohamed Salah bounced back kindly for him to slot home from close range. There was a quick VAR check for handball by Salah but the replay showed no clear contact. It is the second year in a row Liverpool have lost on penalties after Manchester City’s victory in 2019.

Aubameyang’s importance to Arsenal was once again shown in another impressive performance. The Gabon international, who scored twice in the FA Cup final at the same stadium this month, cut inside from the left and whipped the ball into the far corner in emphatic style to open the scoring. He continued to terrorise Liverpool’s defence, exposing young right-back Neco Williams. And when Aubameyang stepped up to take the final penalty, with the score 4-4 in the shootout, there was no way he was going to miss. He has netted 71 goals in 110 Arsenal appearances and no Gunners player has scored more than his five goals at the venue.

After lifting their second piece of silverware in a month, it would cap off a very pleasing summer for Arsenal if Aubameyang does eventually put pen to paper. Liverpool were without regular starters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson but they fielded a side many would feel were capable of overthrowing Arsenal. They started off on the front foot, with Sadio Mane getting in behind on numerous occasions on the left and linking up with full-back Andy Robertson. But sloppiness crept into their game as the first half wore on – Virgil van Dijk had words with Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho on separate occasions for giving the ball away too easily in midfield. Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles was impressive and caused problems, while Bukayo Saka was busy in and around the Liverpool box.

RIP Chadwick Boseman

Actor Chadwick Boseman, who brought the movie “Black Panther” to life with his charismatic intensity and regal performance, has died. Boseman has battled colon cancer since 2016 and died at home with his family and wife by his side, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account. He was 43. With his role as King T’Challa in the boundary-breaking film “Black Panther,” he became a global icon and an inspiring symbol of Black power.

A South Carolina native, Boseman graduated in 2000 from Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, DC. While there, he also attended the British American Drama Academy at Oxford in 1998. He has played several historical figures, such as Jackie Robinson in 42 (2013), James Brown in Get on Up (2014), and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall (2017). His role as the superhero Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including in Black Panther (2018 ), made him an international star, winning him a NAACP Image Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Boseman got his first television role in 2003, in an episode of Third Watch. That same year, Boseman portrayed Reggie Montgomery in the daytime soap opera All My Children, but stated that he was fired after voicing concerns to producers about racist stereotypes in the script; the role was subsequently re-cast, with Boseman’s future Black Panther co-star Michael B. Jordan assuming the role. His early work included episodes of the series Law & Order, CSI:NY, and ER. He also continued to write plays, with his script for Deep Azure performed at the Congo Square Theatre Company in Chicago; it was nominated for a 2006 Joseph Jefferson Award for New Work. In 2008, he played a recurring role on the television series Lincoln Heights and appeared in his first feature film, The Express: The Ernie Davis Story. He landed a regular role in 2010 in another television series, Persons Unknown.

Boseman had his first starring role in the 2013 film 42, in which he portrayed baseball pioneer and star Jackie Robinson. He had been directing an off-Broadway play in East Village when he auditioned for the role, and was considering giving up acting and pursuing directing full-time at the time. About 25 other actors had been seriously considered for the role, but director Brian Helgeland liked Boseman’s bravery and cast him after he had auditioned twice. In 2013, Boseman also starred in the indie film The Kill Hole, which was released in theaters a few weeks before the film 42 In 2014, Boseman appeared opposite Kevin Costner in Draft Day, in which he played an NFL draft prospect. Later that year, he starred as James Brown in Get on Up. In 2016, he starred as Thoth, a deity from Egyptian mythology, in Gods of Egypt.

In 2016, he started portraying the Marvel Comics character T’Challa / Black Panther, with Captain America: Civil War being his first film in a five-picture deal with Marvel. He headlined Black Panther in 2018, which focused on his character and his home country of Wakanda in Africa. The film opened to great anticipation, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year in the United States. He reprised the role in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which were released in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Both films were the highest grossing of the year they were released, with Endgame going on to become the highest-grossing film of all time.

Also in 2019, he starred in 21 Bridges, an American action thriller film directed by Brian Kirk, as an NYPD detective who shuts down the eponymous 21 bridges of Manhattan to find two suspected cop killers. In 2019, it was announced that Boseman was cast in the Netflix war drama film Da 5 Bloods, directed by Spike Lee. After several years of dating, Boseman became engaged to singer Taylor Simone Ledward in October 2019, and they later married in the same year. Boseman was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, which eventually progressed to a stage IV before 2020. He had not spoken publicly about his cancer diagnosis. During treatment (multiple surgeries and chemotherapy), he continued to work and completed filming for several films, Boseman died at his home of complications related to colon cancer on August 28, 2020, with his wife and family by his side.

Kimba The White Lion

Kimba the White Lion : is a Japanese shonen manga series created by Osamu Tezuka which was serialized in the Manga Shonen magazine from November 1950 to April 1954. An anime based on the manga was created by Mushi Production and was broadcast on Fuji Television from 1965 to 1966. It was the first color animated television series created in Japan. Kimba is the son of the king of the jungle Panja who was trapped by hunters & killed for his hide, and the pregnant Eliza is put on a ship, destined for a zoo. Kimba is born on the boat.

Eliza teaches him his father’s ideals. As a huge tropical storm nears, she urges her cub out through the bars of her cage and he is urged to swim back to Africa. There he is found by people in a village who take care of him and decides that when he returns to his wild home he will bring culture to the jungle and stand for peace like his father. The show follows Leo’s life after he returns to the wild, still a young cub, and how he learns and grows in the next year. Leo soon learns that only communication and mutual understanding between animals and humans will bring true peace.

I watched this as a kid and it was one of my favourite cartoons for the year or so that they showed it on Kuwaiti television. As a number of journalists and fans watched Disney’s animated feature film The Lion King they noticed characters and events in the story resembling those of Kimba. Although the two works follow different screenplays, there are strong artistic similarities, and The Lion King contains numerous sequences that closely match Kimbas. I wonder if they will ever revive Kimba again.

My 3rd Mobile Phone

So I made a mistake but since over 14 years have passed since then, I think you can forgive me. So, in between my Samsung R220 and the Sony Ericsson W800i purchase, I actually had Nokia 1100. But here’s the problem – I remember having used that phone but I don’t remember when I got it.

I went through the old blog that I had but I can only find one entry about the Nokia 1100. Which is odd! But yeah, it’s was in the beginning of I think when people at the office, my friends and colleagues, convinced me to dump my Samsung R220 and get the 1100. Over 250 million 1100s have been sold since its launch in late 2003, making it the world’s best selling phone handset and the best selling consumer electronics device in the world at the time.

It was targeted towards developing countries and users who do not require advanced features beyond making calls and SMS text messages, alarm clock, reminders, etc. The Nokia 1100 was the company’s cheapest mobile phone when it was released to the market, making it ideal for the developing world yet had some of the best features. The 1100 features a built-in flashlight, activated by pressing and holding the C key once, or by pressing it twice to lock it on when the keypad is unlocked. It can also be accessed via a menu item. The 1100 and 1101 are only able to play monophonic ringtones, which can be selected from a list of 36 pre-installed tones or from 7 self-composed ones.

In addition to the default light blue, orange or black, there are also dark blue, yellow, red, green and pink versions offered by Nokia, as well as many 3rd-party covers. Other features include a 50-message capacity (inbox and drafts, with 25 messages in the sent items folder), alarm, stopwatch, calculator, 6 profiles, contacts storage (capacity 50, with the ability to assign different tones and icons to different contacts), games (Snake II and Space Impact+) and the ability to compose your own ringtones. The Nokia BL-5C battery has a long standby and talk time – this battery is used in more advanced models that have increased power needs for their features, but in the basic 1100 it consumes a fraction of the power and therefore lasts for up to 400 hours between charges.

Charlie’s Angels (2019)

The 2019 Charlie’s Angels is a American action comedy film written and directed by Elizabeth Banks from a story by Evan Spiliotopoulos and David Auburn. It stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska as the new generation of Angels who are working for a private detective agency named the Townsend Agency. The film is the third installment in the Charlie’s Angels film series and serves as a continuation of the story that began with the television series of the same name by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, and the two previous theatrical films, Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003).

A team of Angels, led by senior operative John Bosley, capture international embezzler Jonny Smith in Rio de Janeiro and turn him over to American authorities. A year later, the European division of the Townsend Agency is informed that Elena Houghlin, an engineer and programmer employed by entrepreneur Alexander Brok, wants to expose her superiors. She knows that Brok’s head of development, Peter Fleming, is covering up a discovery about how an energy conservation device that she helped invent, Calisto, has the potential to trigger fatal seizures when used. She meets with operative Edgar “Bosley” in Hamburg to turn over her findings, but an assassin named Hodak ambushes the meeting and subsequently kills Edgar, leaving Elena to drown. Edgar’s protégé, Jane Kano, rescues her and brings her to operative Rebekah “Bosley” with the help of her partner, Sabina Wilson. Meanwhile, John, who has since retired from the agency, discovers that Rebekah has tagged him with the agency’s specialized subdermal implant without his knowledge.

Rebekah tasks Sabina and Jane, joined by Elena, with breaking into Brok’s corporate headquarters to steal the remaining Calisto prototypes before they can be duplicated. Elena finds one of the devices but is forced to use it to escape, accidentally killing the chief of security Ralph in the process, while the other prototypes are already gone, and Fleming is identified as the thief. Rebekah tracks him to Istanbul, where Jane utilizes one of her old intelligence contacts, Fatima, to locate Fleming. They track him to a remote rock quarry, where the supposedly-imprisoned Smith is revealed to be Fleming’s intermediary for selling Calisto. Hodak is also present and kills Fleming before the Angels break up the sale. Rebekah suddenly disappears, allowing Smith and Hodak to escape with the prototypes.

Returning to their safehouse, Sabina shares her growing belief that Rebekah is secretly working against the agency and has been manipulating them to steal Calisto for her own benefit. While the three ponder Sabina’s suspicion, the safehouse is bombed. Rebekah shows up only to be shot by John, who has come to rescue Elena. Sabina and Jane manage to survive and seek medical help from Fatima. Rebekah reappears and explains that John is the real traitor and that he has spent the last few decades secretly building his own network within the agency after he was passed over to succeed the late Charlie Townsend. John takes Elena to a party hosted by Brok in Chamonix, who reveals himself as the mastermind behind the attempt to assassinate Elena and, unbeknownst to him, John’s plan to weaponize Calisto.

Using Elena’s colleague Langston as a hostage, John forces her to program a Calisto device to kill both Langston and herself before leaving. The Angels, having deduced his plan due to the information provided by Smith, who is later revealed to have defected to their side, show up and rescue Elena and Langston, Elena having already disabled the Calisto device. Jane exacts revenge by impaling Hodak on a spike, while Rebekah catches up with John and his men. Outnumbered, she has other Angels posing as guests subdue the men, after which Sabina knocks out John with a punch. Brok is arrested for conspiracy, and Jane and Langston start a relationship. Elena is recruited as an Angel by the Townsend Agency after passing a series of rigorous training exercises. In a mid-credits scene, Elena receives an official Angels tattoo and congratulations from Charlie.

This is not a well acted or well written movie. The effort seems half-assed. Blaming the audience for your failure to make a good or entertaining movie is not the way to save face. The movie’s soundtracks sucks as well! I will give this film a 6 outta 10!

3 Day Weekend

It’s been a long while since I had a 3 day weekend. This Monday is Onam and hence it is a holiday. Not that it matters much in the current coronavirus situation. Actually, wait – I take that back. I can make it matter. So yeah bring on the 3 day weekend. Cause I got plans. It doesn’t matter than most of it is gonna be done from my bed.

Saturday I plan to go out. I need a haircut badly and I want to get that done now that’s it becoming warmer again. The rains have gone but it will come back again, however I need this haircut. Then I plan to buy some beer from the bar next to it. I am looking for a couple of brands in particular and I might buy them only if those brands are available.

After that I need to get to a medical store and buy some meds for the folks and my inhalers. After that I will go to Farm Gold and buy some fruits and groceries. Snacks perhaps and some colas, 7up. I will also go and get some food in one of the few places that are open for dine in. Maybe a pizza or a steak or pasta. I dunno. And some coffee. Cafe 17 is most probably my destination but I will decide later.

And I will watch some movies. I plan to try and binge the Lord of The Rings movies if I can. It is long overdue. I have only watched them once.

Jokes At The Dentist

A dentist noticed that his next patient, a little old woman, was nervous. So he decided to tell her a little joke as he put on his gloves:

“Do you know how they make these gloves?” He asked.

“No, I don’t.” She replied.

“Well.” He spoofed. “There’s a building in Canada with a big tank of latex and workers of all hand sizes walk up to the tank, dip in their hands, let them dry, Then peel off the gloves and throw them into boxes of the right size.”

She didn’t crack a smile.

“Oh, well.. I tried.” He thought. But five minutes later, during a delicate portion of the procedure, she burst out laughing.

“What’s so funny?” He asked.

She replied. “I was just envisioning how condoms are made!”

My 5th Mobile Phone – RAZR

So by the time mid 2006 rolled over I had been feeling enamoured with stories of the flip phone that Motorola had. Someone from work, in another office, had one and I tested it out. The Motorola RAZR or V3i was an amazing phone. And I wanted one!

In the second week of June of 2006 I received an arrears payout from the parent company of the outsourced call center that I was working at. From Jan 2004 to Jan of 2007 I had worked for Idea as a contract staff and then joined Prudent Technologies continuing the same work for Idea. They paid me a nice sum of Rs.7500 as arrears due. I decided to use that and buy me a RAZR on June 11, 2006.

At the time I thought that it has the best design & shape of any cell phone that I had ever seen. However – it felt a bit of a strech to hold it in your hands. If you were used to smaller phones all you cellphone using life, then you’d need a little bit of getting used to the width of this phone. Having used to very palm-friendly handsets until now (the Motorola T190, Samsung R220, Nokia 1100 & Sony Ericsson K500i), the RAZR felt a little too elongated in my hands. Not that I am complainning that much, it goes along with the territory of having a clamshell phone. Although the Motorola V600 or V620 may be a little less lengthier.

The colour of this particular model also irked me a bit – they did not have any other colour available with them. It was kinda purplely but dark and therefore quite dull. Black would have been sleek, sexy and suited the handset a lot more. Silver also would have been very cool. There is a pink one, but I’m not a girl or gay! The width of the phone prevented me from being really comfortable in browsing WAP sites while lying down. It became really tiring and your hand and fingers get tired after a few minutes. No doubt, at that time, one of the most popular models of handsets in the world, can tire out your fingers if you are a person who tries to do that for a long duration. And opening the phone with only one hand took some doing and getting used to; closing the phone was much easier though.

The keypad with it’s glowing keys is very StarTrekey. However the style of the keypad makes it less likely to get damaged or faded. Mp3s play on the RAZR very well and the included earphones are great. The 246 MB Memory card (can be updated to 512 MB) is spacious enough for about 40-50 songs depending on the size of the files. I loved that phone!

Mari & Cedric Sign Permanent Arsenal Deals

Arsenal have confirmed Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares have joined the club on permanent deals. Both players moved to the Gunners initially on loan in January. Spanish central defender Pablo, who made three appearances before suffering an ankle injury, has cost £14million from Flamengo. The 26-year-old joined Flamengo from Manchester City, where he had been since 2016. The left-footed central defender spent his time with City on three different season-long loan spells – in Spain with Girona for the 2016/17 season, then to the Netherlands with NAC Breda in 2017/18, before returning to Spain for the 2018/19 campaign with Deportivo La Coruna.

Mari developed his youth career in Spain with RCD Mallorca, where he made his La Liga debut at the age of just 17. Three years later in 2013 Mari joined Spanish side Gimnastic, where he made nearly 100 appearances in his three seasons with the Catalonian club.

Portuguese right-back Cedric joins permanently on a free transfer from Southampton where he appeared 100 times. He made five Premier League appearances for Arsenal during the restart, scoring on his debut in the 4-0 home victory over Norwich City. He made five Premier League appearances for us during the restart, scoring on his debut in our 4-0 home victory over Norwich City. The 28-year-old started his career at Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, developing through the youth ranks before making his first-team debut in the Portuguese Primeira Liga at the age of 19.

An experienced international, Cedric has made 33 appearances for his country. He featured in the 2018 World Cup and was also part of the Portugal squad which won the European Championships in 2016. During his career, the defender has also had spells on loan at Academica in Portugal and Inter Milan in Italy.

A statement on the club’s website read: “We have reached agreement with both Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares to join the club on permanent deals. “Both players joined us initially on loan in January, and after impressing on and off the pitch over the past eight months, all parties have agreed to make their moves permanent.”

5 Months

I forgot to mention this on the exact date, which was just yesterday, but I am only a day late. It has been exactly 5 months since we started work at home due to the lockdown enforced because of the Coronavirus. Yes, 5 months. And I think except for the first 2 months, which were also the hottest in several years, has gone by kinda average in speed. April and May dragged on by and the fact that every day I was sweating and roasting in the heat didn’t help. Since June it has been so much better.

Now, here is the issue that is creeping up.  Initially, when Lockdown was started, we were told that we would work from home for 2 months. Those two months became till September and then in July they announced that it would be next year. Although initially I was not happy, the fact is that the pandemic is not going away, we are still seeing people getting infected and it’s not under control. Therefore it made total sense and though I do miss seeing some of my colleagues, I started liking working from home especially after the weather got better and things started to cool.

Now last week this all changed. Now they are asking us to come back to the office. In phases. Since they are having difficulty is getting more systems. It will be announced in advanced as to who are to come and when but this is not the right thing to do at this moment. I hope we do not see an increase in people getting infected.
