Entry Door Choices

What type of material is best suited for your entry doors? Wood, fiberglass, steel or solid glass—there are a variety of options to suit your preference, your style and your budget when it comes to choosing an exterior door. The number of styles and options leave much to your personal taste, but you can narrow down the material choices for exterior doors into four main categories: wood, fiberglass, steel and glass.

When it comes to doors and the materials used for them, wood is the defacto most popular ones because it is traditional, looks aesthetically pleasing and most people seem to prefer the flexibility of wood in size, shape and style. A fiberglass entry door can be stained in a variety of colors to give you the same beautiful look of traditional wood. They can also be ordered in numerous hues or painted in any color of your choice. As noted, they are more durable than traditional wooden doors and generally stand up against small dents and nicks. If you pick a steel front door, you are potentially choosing one of the safest options in terms of intrusions. Metal entry doors have insulated foam with a steel panel on either side. However if they do get dented it can be hard to repair and will likely not pop out of the material. This may result in the need to replace the entire steel entry door.

And then we come to glass entry doors. Pros of a solid glass entry door is the view you have of the outside and the amount of sunlight you get in. The risk is that strangers standing outside your home can also peep in and this maybe be unsettling if you are alone at home or if you have small kids. Alternatively, choose a wood, fiberglass or steel door that has the option to install glass sidelights which can make it look really beautiful. Some people even go for aluminum or vinyl doors.

Interlock Driveways

Thinking of making your driveway interlock? Interlock Driveways are durable and will Last decades. The installation process of interlocking pavers creates its strength and flexibility. First, because the interlocking pavers sit on top of a foundation of densely packed gravel and sand; moisture easily passes without causing the pavers to swell or change shape. While stamped concrete is generally cheaper than interlock stone, it won’t last nearly as long, especially during the freeze-thaw cycle of Ottawa’s cold winters. Interlock pavers are well worth the investment because they will save you from plenty of work down the road.

Sealing the interlock driveway is a good idea. If you think about it, placing anything that will be subject to the elements – whether it’s those hot sunny days, or damp, cold winter months – it makes sense to provide some sort of coating to protect it. Without a coating, interlock pavers on your driveway can easily become marked up and stained from oils spills, grease and other marks left from your car. They can seep through the stone and joints making it very difficult to remove. A coat of sealer provides a resistant layer against the staining quality of oil and grease. So anytime you have your car parked on your interlock, there’s no need to worry about it staining the driveway.

I also think that this is a good way to make the exterior of your house look neat and sharp. Not only is it practical but it is very pleasing to see a properly done driveway.

Flooring Of Choice

Gone are the days where everyone wanted carpeting on their floors and if they didn’t have the budget for plush, thick carpet – the kind that let’s your feet and toes sink in luxurious comfort – they’d pick a thin carpet that gives you a rug burn if you slide on it. Instead more and more builders have sworn by solid hardword floors. I must say that they also seem to look more classy and elegant.

Solid hardwood floors are made of planks milled from a single piece of timber. Solid hardwood floors were originally used for structural purposes, being installed perpendicular to the wooden support beams of a building known as joists or bearers. With the increased use of concrete as a subfloor in some parts of the world, engineered wood flooring has gained some popularity. However, solid wood floors are still common and popular. Solid wood floors have a thicker wear surface and can be sanded and finished more times than an engineered wood floor. It is not uncommon for homes in New England, Eastern Canada, USA, and Europe to have the original solid wood floor still in use today.

Ofcourse once you do get such wonderful flooring you also need to clean and maintain them. A mop paired with a machine washable, microfiber pad for dusting and cleaning are the best tools to clean wood floors. A good dusting pad attracts dirt, microparticles and common household allergens. Avoid using water and vinegar, soap-based cleaners, wax or steam cleaners on hardwood floors.

The Doors To Your Home

Every door is another passage, another boundary we have to go beyond. – Rumi

The door on which we have been knocking all our lives will open at last. – C. S. Lewis

Just the previous posts about windows, I feel a really good door at the entrance of your house is important. It adds a lot of character to your home and says a lot about the rest of the house and the people living in it. If you are building a new custom home or renovating one you can choose a new door and you need to look out for windows and doors installation services.

That dream house could really use a really nice entryway. Picking and choosing the right door to match both the interior and the exterior is very important. One of the things that do like about modern designs for homes (usually I like it to be a mix of modern aesthetics and old fashion coziness and comfort) is the fact that some of the door designs are really awesome. So ensure to pick the right one for your home.

There are various ways to match a good door to a house. Engage in your builder and ask for their opinion but also ensure to make sure that you like the design and feel of it. After all, it is your house and you need to be comfortable having it at the entrance to your home.

Getting Your Permits In Order

When you are getting your home custom built you need to find a good builder. If you are looking to build on an existing home or building from the ground up you need a team who can help you plan your project and create a design that will get quick municipal approvals and fit the specifics of your lot. A residential permit is important to ensure that you have no issues cropping up once the construction/or renovation starts. You want the process to be as problem free and hassle free and you need to select the team that sorts that thing for you.

Building a new deck for relaxing during the weekend and cooking up those barbecue steaks or chicken? Bought a house with an unfinished basement that you now want to make into an entertainment / rec room area, home movie theatre and man cave with a big bar attached? You need to ensure that the work that you are getting done is within the local municipality permits and if you have that, then it’s a load of your back.

That’s my basement – a nice rec room area for darts, billiards, an area to display all my blurays and dvds, a 6 to 8 seat home movie theatre setup and a man cave with a nice bar at one end. That is the life.

Building A Dream Custom Home?

What I would like in a dream home is a nice, big spacious 2 storey home, double car attached garage, that starts off with a living / dining room in the front off the foyer / entrance. It is very important that the living / dining room for guests is away from the kitchen and family room. That is for guests and entertaining, the latter is for you and your family. One half bathroom / powder room for guests and for emergencies when you are at home too. At the back of the house I would like a large kitchen with center island, large freezer /fridge, beer fridge, double wall ovens. I would love to approach a custom home builder for this. Also ensure that you have the appropriate building permit for it.

One nice room as a den / office where I have my computer, dvd/bluray collections and various Star Trek and other Scifi models on display. A pantry area and a butler’s pantry too. A nice deck out back with a large green yard confined by picket fences on the left and right sides and a grill at the back – which overlooks a small lake. 2 dogs and 2 kitties that play in that yard. One smoking hot wife who is totally in love & lust with me and vice versa. Above a master bedroom with 5 piece attached bathroom and 2 large walk in closets. 2 additional bedrooms with bath attached and a single room which will be converted into a library.

The basement will have a large tv room, pool table, Foosball table, a small wine cellar, one half bathroom, an additional bedroom with batch attached and a storage room next to the facilities room. And it has to be a walkout basement leading to the backyard. That’s all I ask for!

Getting New Furniture?

In a couple of years, fingers crossed that I have enough savings, I will be changing the furniture in my apartment. The first thing that I want to change is the sofa in the living room because the one we have is really old (it has had some repair and a the upholstery redone) and I want a change in decor. I will be reaching out to a modern furniture store or two to check and see what options I have to get the look that I am thinking of.

I could go the online route but I still prefer to go in person and check out the furniture for myself. When I bought my current chair for my home office setup, I could have opted for online options which were about the same in price but I preferred to go check out a couple of chairs in person, sit in it and check it out. Ok, I confess – I also did a 360 swivel in glee when the salesman wasn’t watching. You gotta check those out as well! So once I was happy and saw that the price was just below my budget, I happily paid for it and the delivery charges so they could bring it to my apartment a couple of days later.

When it comes to comfort vs style, comfort will always win out but if you want to make them really stand out you can always look at some luxury options as well. But I will be frank, I have seen some really awesome looking furniture that is very posh but they weren’t very comfortable. If you are thinking of upgrading take these things into consideration.

Sprucing Up Your Windows

“Outside the window is a world that beckons and inside the window is a world for which the outside yearns. Windows hold a different dream for each of us.” ? Anthony T. Hincks

Those are some amazing quotes about windows. I like well designed windows on houses and apartments because it makes the house look amazing. If you want to get some windows and doors in your home replaced, you can take a look at options here.

The windows at my apartment are the very ordinary looking basic type. It is what it is, just rectangular gaps in the walls of the building to let in sunlight and fresh air. And we ofcourse have metal bars and drapes so that is there. But I do love the view from my windows that I get of the sunrise and mainly the sunset. Sunsets here are really awesome, especially during this time of the year.

When doing some renovations to your home keep a few things in mind as to how long do you want them to last and therefore you may want to spend a bit more in order to achieve the best outcome. But yes if you can change the window bars or dress up your windows with some nice drapes they will add a lot of charm to your home.

The Top Load Washers

The washing machine that I have at home, and the previous two that we have ever purchased during my lifespan, were all top load washing machines. I think these are the most common and popular ones in India. Why, I am not sure but I think it helps in avoiding small kids and animals getting into and creating havoc. But I am not sure if it is better when it comes to washer repair but I guess it would be.

Top-loading washers are normally more convenient since you don’t have to bend over to load and unload clothes. For older buyers or those with joint issues, top-loading washers typically stand at an ideal height to save the trouble of bending down. To mitigate this issue with front loaders we recommend installing the units on laundry pedestals that raise the units about 12-15″.

Top loaders also have other convenient qualities, such as the ability to add clothes in mid-cycle, or even right after starting the cycle. Top-loading washers can also collect lint and distribute fabric softener better than front-loading washing machines can. Top-loading washers with an agitator tend to wash clothes faster than front-loading washing machines since the clothes are immersed in water for the length of the wash cycle.

RIP Road Warrior Animal

I’m a few days late but Joe Laurinaitis, better known to pro wrestling fans as Road Warrior Animal, has died at the age of 60, according to the WWE. Along with Road Warrior Hawk, he was one half of the tag team The Road Warriors/The Legion of Doom. He headlined multiple pay-per-view events for the WWF and WCW, competing for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at 2001’s Sin. Laurinaitis was born in Philadelphia on September 12, 1960 to Lithuanian parents. He grew up in Minnesota, having to work for a living from a very early age. He worked as a bouncer at Grandma B’s in the Twin Cities where he caught the eye of Eddie Sharkey, a well-known wrestling trainer. Sharkey thought that Laurinaitis and Mike Hegstrand, Richard Rood, and Barry Darsow could make it big in professional wrestling, and trained all four of them.

Laurinaitis made his debut in November 1982, competing as The Road Warrior using a biker gimmick. After only a few matches as a singles competitor, his career and life would change thanks to an idea by Paul Ellering. When Paul Ellering was looking to put together a stable of heels in Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) called “The Legion of Doom”, it was decided to put Laurinaitis together with his good friend Mike Hegstrand and change their names to “Animal” and “Hawk” respectively. Thus, the Road Warriors were born. Known for their rough and tough, take-no-prisoners personas, as well as their face paint and spikes, Laurinaitis and Hegstrand were dominant, particularly in the 1980s, becoming tag-team champions in the AWA, NWA, WCW and WWE. The Road Warriors were a popular team both stateside and in Japan, where they were often featured attractions. The Road Warriors were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011 and received tag team of the year honors from Pro Wrestling Illustrated from 1983 to 1985 and in 1988.

To look more intimidating, the two shaved their heads into Mohawks and started wearing studded dog collars, spiked shoulder pads, and face paint. The look and name were taken from The Road Warrior, helping to paint the two as no-mercy monsters. Their interview style was vicious, yet charismatic and a bit humorous. From the iconic face paint to metal spikes to the feeling one got when hearing, “What a rush,” Animal and Hawk brought the crowds to their feet around the world. They led the tag team landscape in multiple promotions, winning titles in multiple organizations and ultimately being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Laurinaitis made some non-wrestling appearances in WCW in 1993. On August 18, at the Clash of the Champions XXIV, Animal made his appearance, getting out of a black Camaro Z28 indicating his partner Hawk was Dustin Rhodes’ mystery partner against Rick Rude and The Equalizer. On September 19, at Fall Brawl, Animal was the advisor for Sting’s team.

In January 2001 Animal returned with a prominent position in WCW as the “enforcer” of the stable known as The Magnificent Seven with the objective to protect WCW World Champion Scott Steiner. Laurinaitis released an autobiography with William Andrew Wright titled The Road Warriors: Danger, Death, and the Rush of Wrestling on March 1, 2011 published by Medallion Press, Inc. The book talks about the rise of The Road Warriors, shares funny stories of life on the road, and offers behind-the-scenes accounts of professional wrestling. Animal made his mark not only in the ring, but backstage as well and as the news came of his passing, wrestlers took to social media to reflect on their friend and his influence. Animal was inducted with Hawk and their manager Paul Ellering into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011.

Wish I Had An Oven

An oven is a thermally insulated chamber used for the heating, baking, or drying of a substance, and most commonly used for cooking. Kilns and furnaces are special-purpose ovens used in pottery and metalworking, respectively. If you have an oven in your home, which in Western nations is a given, you’d also need a good service that offer do oven repair if needed.

You have many types of oven’s like the double oven, wall oven, gas oven and microwave ovens to name a few. I would like to learn how to cook using an oven but we have never had an oven in our house or apartment. Most families here now have started to turn towards getting an oven and you can even find a simple one or a really good wall oven/double oven that you can install while doing a kitchen renovation.

Baking chicken wings or whole chickens, baking beef or other meat roasts, even biryanis or elaborate dishes would be a pleasure. I wonder how come we in India don’t use this device. But more and more people, especially younger families are getting a portable one so they can do baking at home. A lot of women have started their own businesses selling baked goods and meat dishes and I am jealous of them. Next place I move to, I will look at the option.

Dryer’s Market

I did a small article about washing machines a day ago. While washing machines are pretty common in most Indian homes, oddly enough we don’t seem to be much in the market for dryers. But I think slowly they are gaining some headway into the consumer market and I can see more and more stores, online and physical, selling them. And they don’t seem to be as costly as they used to be. And like all such appliances you need to find a good dryer repair place incase something needs to be fixed.

Why have dryers taken so long to catch on in India? Cost seems to be a factor. The only people I know who have washers in their home and both from really rich families. Everyone else I know dry their clothes the old fashioned way. Drying your clothes in the sun and wind outside on a clothes hanger. But like I said that is changing and more and more middle class families are thinking about getting a dryer. This is mainly true for couples and families who live in apartment complexes for the most part.

To be honest drying clothes in an apartment is a difficult thing. It also is messy and creates a damp atmosphere inside the home. It also depends on how your apartment is, if it has a decent sized balcony or a room with enough windows so that drying clothes doesn’t make your room stuffy and damp. So if you have a larger family, investing in a dryer may make sense.

Lock It Up

When we moved in to our current apartment back in 2006, we had the standard lock on the door which was ok but not what we were used to. When we were leaving Kuwait to settle back in India, we bought a few nice things for our house here. One of those things for our house and later in the apartment were these big door locks. You need  a good locksmith to set those up for you in your home. If you’re in the GTA area maybe check out these good folks at Locksmith Toronto.

So these locks that we have on my front door are a bit odd. They are really strong (from Italy) and pretty difficult to break into. Also the odd thing is they open the opposite way to all other door locks.  You can lock it three times for the strongest lock or leave it at 1 or 2. It is the best option that I have seen and better than most locks in other homes I have been to. You can find good locks here on Amazon India if you want to look for something similar.

I remember when I was kid, maybe 7 or so I managed to get myself locked in. The door that separates the main bedroom, bathroom and kitchen of our flat in Kuwait City from the living room and the key broke in the lock. I was panicking and my mother was panicking but finally she managed to get hold of my dad who called in the locksmith that he knew and an 90 minutes later, I was free. And given a Pepsi and a shawarma dinner to ease my worries.

Choosing A Washing Machine

We have always had a washing machine or washer. Nothing to it. It’s always been there as a necessary appliance in my family’s. Every couple of days, the clothes of the 4 of us and now 3 of us, are dumped into the washing machine and we let it run it’s cycle of cleaning. When I was young, most families did not have a washing machine. That has since changed and these thing even have long lives if you get it repaired and serviced right and don’t run it ragged. If you are looking for appliance repair London, Ontario these good folks can get it done for you. They also help in the installation.

If you are in the market to get a new washing machine why not try to get one with a deal? Here are some that you can look up if you want to get one. Remember to also take measurements and get the right size for your family but also one that will fit within the confines of the area that you are planning to keep it in your home. No one wants to buy a heavy appliance and then, once it is delivered, find out that it is too big for where you want to keep it. Also, if people will see them and it’s not in another floor than the main room, looking at pleasing designs will be a good choice.

The top loading, vertical axis cloth washer, is the dominant design in the United States and Canada. This design places the clothes in a vertically mounted perforated basket that is contained within a water-retaining tub, with a finned water-pumping agitator in the center of the bottom of the basket. Clothes are loaded through the top of the machine, which is usually but not always covered with a hinged door.

The front-loading or horizontal-axis clothes washer is the dominant design in Europe. In other regions of the world, most “high-end” washing machines are of this type. In addition, most commercial and industrial clothes washers around the world are of the horizontal-axis design. This layout mounts the inner basket and outer tub horizontally, and loading is through a door at the front of the machine. The door often but not always contains a transparent window. Agitation is supplied by the back-and-forth rotation of the cylinder and by gravity. The clothes are lifted up by paddles on the inside wall of the drum and then dropped.

Last thing you want is an appliance that just takes up room but you don’t use it. Or you overuse it. So make a wise choice and get the right one for you.

Why A Dash Cam?

Seeking a dazzling dashcam for your car? Check out the most popular car dash cams available in the market. Choose from the different variants and secure your car even when you are not riding. When you chose the one that is right for you, then look out for dash cam installation.

I’ve seen dash cams evolve from a luxury item to becoming more and more a necessary item in most countries over the past couple of decades. Why have it? It is insurance for accidents and other such things that can happen on the road. Hopefully nothing bad does come to us but if it is done, your dash cam could be the difference maker. Stuck on choosing one for you and not having a physical store nearby? Check out these cams in the link here.

I have previously written about the importance of having a good dash cam. It helps you with the law, with claiming your insurance and you are well within your rights to use a dash cam. So if you are a car owner, you owe it to yourself and your family to install a good dash cam on your vehicle(s) and keep yourself protected.

How About A Dishwasher?

I’ve never had a dishwasher at home. Whenever I see houses in western countries I look at their appliances and can on wonder how it is that we here in India don’t get dishwashers for our homes. We need to get on the bandwagon. Our families could save a ton of time and effort with a dishwasher. They last 10-15 year. Looking for repairs? Capital Appliance Repair has you covered.

If you are busy or have a large household, buying a dishwasher will save you the time and effort of having to wash your dishes manually. Dishwashers can also clean more efficiently and are more hygienic. For a large family or an office setting, a dishwasher is a must-have. Imagine spending all that time that you’d normally waste in cleaning all them pots, pans and dishes, with your family members instead. Or resting and relaxing with a nice book or watching a movie.

I think we all need to spend less time on these tasks and if we have an appliance to do the job for us, while we relax or do something more productive. Making the energy costs worth our while might be something we also need to look into as well. We can make technology do the work for us but we also need to be wise in our choices.
