The Premier League relegation battle is often one of the most engaging elements of an English league season — at least, if you’re not a fan of a team facing the drop. The bottom three sides in the Premier League table at the end of the season drop down into the EFL Championship, to be replaced by the top two from the second tier and the winners of the Championship playoff final. Sheffield United had long looked doomed in 2024 after struggling on their return to the top table, while Burnley were also mired in a relegation battle for the majority of the season despite their impressive Championship performances under Vincent Kompany.
Luton Town were fighting for survival until the final day, while Everton and Nottingham Forest had major scares amid points deductions for financial rule breaches.
Who have been relegated from the Premier League?
Luton Town — Week 38 asked a miracle for Luton Town to stay up. There was little intervention. Luton needed to win by a lot and have Nottingham Forest lose by a lot or win by a LOT and have Forest lose by any number. We’re talking double-digit goal differential reversal. As usual, the Hatters fought hard through injuries. But it wouldn’t have mattered had Luton beaten Fulham as Nottingham Forest took a two-goal lead at Burnley and got their positive result.
Burnley — Burnley joined Sheffield United in sealing their fate as one-and-done in the Premier League following a 2-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur in Week 37. The loss was a microcosm of the Clarets season, as they fought well and even took a lead but could not keep a superior opponent out of their goal. Jacob Bruun Larsen scored again for Burnley as he would’ve been one of the heroes of a great escape, but Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven scored on either side of half to give Spurs the win.
Sheffield United — The Blades were relegated following a blown lead and blowout loss to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on April 27. The Blades had won just three Premier League matches since being promoted last season, and their 16 points with three matches left are 10 back of 17th-place Nottingham Forest. Two managers have struggled for the Blades in this campaign, as Paul Heckingbottom was scapegoated on December 5 in favor of former United boss Chris Wilder. Sheffield United had a 1W-2D-11L record under Heckingbottom, conceding 39 goals and scoring just 11. Wilder’s bunch have a 2W-5D-14L record, allowing 58 goals versus 23. The Blades were in the Premier League in the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons, then spending the 2006-07 campaign in the top flight. Wilder oversaw a pair of PL seasons from 2019-21.
