Won’t You Be My Neighbour?

Who are your neighbors? Are you friends with them, barely say hi, or avoid them altogether? Tell us a story — real or invented — about the people on the other side of your wall (or street, or farm, or… you get the point).

For the past 7.5 years I’ve been living in an apartment building, the top floor of a 7 storey building. So no fences or backyards or front yards. Ours is a small congested building with 2 apartments per floor and a small parking area that always cramped for space. I do not spend time with my neighbours. I barely speak to more than a handful of them and that too will usually be a casual “hi”, “hello” and the usual small talk. I don’t know atleast half of the people living in the building.

There’s a few of them I don’t like. The building at one time used to be own by a family of brothers before they sold off the apartments to different people but these big ass, rich brothers still act like the building is theirs. This was very evident during the recent bathrooms & pipes renovations that we had going on at the time in our building. These guys would come in to our apartment and others claiming to want to oversee things even if there was no need or purpose to do so. They just want to lord over the other families and pretend that they own the whole building as before. I avoid them as much as I can and usually just nod in their general vicinity as acknowledgement.

A couple of the people are nice and I chat with them on occasion usually when we pass each other in the lobby area or in the elevator ride up or down. That’s about it and that’s all I want from them.
