Sens Update, 19th Oct 09
Well Ottawa seems to be getting in their stride of late. On the 10th the Sens welcomed the Atlanta Thrashers and came out 4-2 winners. Mike Fisher had a goal and an assist. Alexie Kovalev, Chris Neil & Jarko Ruutu also scored and goalie Brian Elliot made 27 saves.
Two days later however, the Pittsburgh Penguins came calling and handed us a 4-1 defeat. Milan Michalek got his first Ottawa goal to open the scoring 15:59 in. Pascal Leclaire made 24 saves as the Senators (3-2-0) ended a three-game winning streak. On the 15th, Michalek registered his first three-goal game in the NHL, including a pair of shorthanded tallies, to spark Ottawa to a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Scotiabank Place.
Kovalev, Alexandre Picard, Nick Foligno and Ruutu also scored for the first-place Senators (4-2-0), who leaped back over the idle Buffalo Sabres in the Northeast Division. Goalie Leclaire had a relatively easy night, facing just 17 shots and stopping 16 of them. The highlight of that game is shown below. And just last night, Kovalev scored a goal and had an assist against the team he had played for from 2004-09 – the Montreal Canadiens. The Sens scored a goal in each period to win 31, with Neil & Daniel Alfredsson scoring the other two.

Superstar youngster John Tavares’s first NHL game in Canada was last night at Ottawa. But it was it was a less-heralded rookie suiting up for the Senators who played the starring role. Defenceman Matt Carkner, in just his fifth NHL game despite being drafted 10 years ago, scored his first goal and added an assist, being named the No. 1 star in the Senators’ 3-2 overtime victory over the Islanders on Thursday.
The Ottawa Senators got their first win of the 2009-10 season in Toronto, led by 26 saves from goalie Pascal Leclaire, as they beat the Maple Leafs 2-1 — the first win for Leclaire in a Senators uniform.
Disgruntled star left winger Dany Heatley finally got what he wanted. The two time 50 goal scorer got his trade and a move from the Ottawa Senators to San Jose.
Just got this news in – Jason Smith has announced his retirement from the NHL. The 35 year old defenceman was on the 2nd year of a 2 year contract with the Ottawa Senators worth $2.6 million a year.
I didn’t see this coming but it looks like a good deal for some slick offense and could get us 20+ goals a season. Ottawa Senators general manager, Bryan Murray, gave the slick Russian winger a US$10-million, two-year deal Monday, believing Kovalev will bring a dimension to his team that was sorely lacking last season. A 16-year NHL veteran, Kovalev spent the past six seasons with the Canadiens and in 78 games last season he led the team with 26 goals and 65 points.
If only we had this same form throughout this season; the Ottawa Senators are looking like a team set to beat everyone at the bottom end of the season. On March 17th Brendan Bell scored twice and Filip Kuba had three assists for the Senators, giving him 31 on the season, as Ottawa beat Buffalo 4-2. Dany Heatley scored his 33rd goal and Daniel Alfredsson had the other goal.
Let’s take a look at how the Senators have been doing since my last update. First game was on the 9th of March against our hated rivals Toronto, who have had the better of us this season. But not on this night – Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley scored second-period goals, leading the Ottawa Senators to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night. Brian Elliott made 25 saves in his third straight start for Ottawa, which won all of those games.
Let’s see where the Senators stand at the 63 game mark – wins (25), loses (29), overtime (10), goals for (157), goals against (179) for a total of 60 points. The problem lies in the goals against section – it’s a clear indication of why we aren’t in the thick of the playoff action for the first time since 1996. More goals would have got us more wins.
Two nights before, Edmonton came visiting and lost 2-4. Center Jason Spezza scored the fastest Senators goals ever, scoring on the 12th sec from the start of the game. Dany Heatley, Mike Comrie & and Campoli also scored for Ottawa, which ended a three-game losing streak. Brian Elliott had 24 saves.
As predicted but not as worse as expected, Antoine Vermette was the sole Senators to be traded by GM Bryan Murray. The Sens dealt Vermette to the Columbus Blue Jackets this morning for goalie Pascal Leclaire and a second-round draft pick. The deal for Leclaire is seen as a move to try and find a No. 1 goaltender for a team that has had its share of struggles in net over the years.
As the trade deadline approaches, Ottawa has to deal with a few of it’s players probably not remaining as a Senator once the fog clears. Chris Neil isn’t any closer to staying with the Senators. Neil’s Toronto-based agent Todd Reynolds met with Ottawa GM Bryan Murray yesterday at Scotiabank Place but neither side has budged from its position. Neil is still seeking $2.5 million per-season and the Senators last offer was $1.6 million. If no deal is made, he will likely be moved before the 3 p.m. today.
