Star Trek

The TV Show I Would Produce

You get to produce your own television show. What’s it about? Who’s starring in it? Describe it in detail.

The answer to this question is undoubtedly, and if you know me at all it shouldn’t surprise you in the least, something from the Star Trek universe. I would gladly give an arm and a leg and one of my kidneys to be able to make the 6th live action tv series of Star Trek (after TOS, TNG, DS9,Voyager & Enterprise) of 25-26 episodes a season.

I’ll make it gritty, dirty & very dramatic but will also feature all of the things we know and love and hold dear about the Star Trek so far. It will be set in years post 3000 and the times are a bit tougher now, not really for humans on earth, but elsewhere in the galaxy. The United federation is in a disarray with the members fighting and disagreeing over too may things. The richer species have become complacent and concentrates  only on luxuries and food and drink while the poorer species & planets have unaligned themselves from the Federation and have begun open hostilities upon each other and non-member species for supplies and weaponry. The Vulcans have secluded themselves, greatly disturbed by the changes happening and barricaded themselves on their home planet and settlements in their region of space. They refuse to have much to do with the rest of the galaxy and spend their time enhancing their minds with meditation and studies. The Klingons have become a split race – half are peaceful and remain with the Federation or what’s left of it while the other half have resumed their space warring warrior ways and are on the prowl.

The Romulans have become religious zealots are ancient books are discovered about a possible god/prophet-like figure in their past and they have joined with some other races in spreading the visions of a world as per the teachings of this figure. When they have an argument or rejection from people, it’s a show of superior brutal force. The Cardassians have taken the role of policing the areas of the galaxies and bringing law & order wherever possible. The humans along with the Bajorans (now a steady & calming factor in the Federation), Trill, Andorians and with occasional help from species like the Ferengi (whenever the feel like it and always for a price) are left to hold the strings together and keep a semblance of governance going and they feel that they losing the battle. My show would focus on the flagship of that era the USS Endevour, which has a senior officer & crew of a mix of these races plus a few Klingons & Cardassians and who are on a mission to help whichever areas need it the most.

Whatdaya think?

My Star Trek Journey

My love affair with Star Trek is more recent when compared to my love affair with Science Fiction movies & tv series in general. The first scifi series that I honestly recollect loving was the original Battlestar Galactica. This was first shown on Kuwait television in 1980 and perhaps the following year they showed Galactica 1980 (which was the spin off show of BSG). I must have watched reruns of it during 1981-83.

However I do remember seeing some of the TOS era episodes during my childhood but I can’t recollect them much. I remember during a summer holidays visit to India they were showing some of the episodes and I remember hearing about Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest during those years. Also I remember watching some of the Motion Picture (1979) during my childhood years, perhaps at the age of 9 or 10 in India – I vaguely remember my relatives being also interested due to former Miss India & Miss Universe the late Persis Khambata starring in the movie. So I know I saw it but can’t recollect much of it from that time. It would be 1988 or so when I first remember watching something Star Trek related – I remember selecting The Search for Spock from one of the two video lending libraries my family & I used to have membership at and I watched it on the VHS tape. I was 12. Cable tv was launched in India 3 years later and I got it at home another 12 months later but there was no Star Trek.

It would be 1995, aged 19 when I finally started watching Star Trek regularly. Star tv started showing TNG from the very first episode for the first time in India. I started watching from episode 2 and was hooked. Picard, Riker, Troi, Crusher, Data, LaForge & Worf were the characters that fueled my passion for all things Scifi & Star Trek in general. It became an obsession and I watched as many episodes & the reruns as much as I could. In 2001 Hallmark started showing Voyager and I started watching that – from episode 1 of season 1 all the way to the last episode of season 7 – missing just a few here or there. Just after that show ended it’s original run on Hallmark, Star World picked up seasons 1 & 2 of Enterprise and I was a regular viewer of that too. But I would miss the 3rd & 4th seasons of Enterprise on tv – because they didn’t show it. And then for a couple of years no Star Trek at all. In 2007-2008 I started trying to watch Voyager episodes online but they were sporadic since I had a very slow internet connection. 2009 all that changed. I got all 7 seasons of Voyager and watched them at a stretch. As soon as that ended I started watching DS9 too and finally Enterprise, TOS and TNG. I finished watching TOS on Jan 2011 and TNG was the last in Dec 2011. Of these I have seen most of Voyager 3 times, TNG twice and seasons 1 & 2 of Enterprise twice as well.

Somewhere during all of this I became a Trekkie. I’d have to guess and say it was probably in 1995-96 that I became an ardent fan and immersed myself in the Trek universe. It was hard – no internet at home – in fact I only took a net connection at home in 2006! But since then it’s been Trek online as well. Long may I continue to be a Trekkie.

Resistence Is Futile

I feel like having accomplished something great! My till now anti-Scifi friend is finally convinced and he called me up on Wednesday late in the evening and said that he, his wife, his brother & brothers wife are all planning to marathon the entire live action Star Trek franchise tv series & movies. I almost cried when he told me that he spent some time & money to buy all the dvds, cause I spent years berating his lack of enthusiasm regarding Star Trek & other SciFi stuff.

So starting on the 24th of May (it’s was a harthal or strike here so no offices will be open) they are gonna watch a few episodes a day as a group.

Here is my suggested viewing sequence:

  • Enterprise
  • The Original Series
  • The Motion Picture
  • Wrath of Khan
  • The Search for Spock
  • The Voyage Home
  • The Final Frontier
  • The Undiscovered Country
  • The Next Generation
  • Deep Space 9
  • Generations
  • First Contact
  • Insurrection
  • Voyager
  •  Nemesis
  •  Star Trek 2009

And I was extremely happy that it seems that by the end of the weekend the four of them seem to have become semi-converts and are excited about exploring the Star Trek Universe. Mission accomplished!

Happy Birthday Scotty

It’s James Doohan’s birthday today. If he was alive he would be 92 years old. Doohan was ofcourse an actor who was the original Commander Montgomery Scott aka Scotty in Star Trek The Original Series. For those of you who don’t know Scotty was the USS Enterprise’s chief engineer and a “miracle worker” known for his superior technical and engineering skill, experience and ingenuity. Doohan was also a pilot for the Canadian army and served in World War 2. Doohan often went to great lengths to buoy the large number of fans who have been inspired to make their own accomplishments in engineering and other fields, as a result of Doohan’s work and his encouragement. He died in 2005 due to pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 85.

Scotty, Scotty – you are the one we would all choose to beam us out of trouble, just in the nick of time. Thanks for the memories, esp talking to a computer mouse in Star Trek V . I’ll be drinking a Scotch in your honour tonight and I’ll leave a glass for you.

Mr. Scotty In Relics

As some of you might know, I am currently watching Star Trek TNG episodes as I download them from the net. I’m currently in the 6th season and I’ve reached a beloved episode that I remember quite well from watching it the first time on cable tv a few years ago. It’s Relics an episode in which the crew of the USS Enterprise D find a Dyson Sphere (just look up the theoretical stuff about possible Dysons sphere on Wikipedia) and investigate a crashed Federation starship, the USS Jenolan, which seems to have been there for over 75 years. When they board the vessel, the find that a single survivor has been stored in the pattern buffer of the transporter for all this while. The transporters were reconfigured in a strange manner. LaForge, Riker & Worf reset the controls and rematerialize the person in the transporter – who turns out to be Captain Montgomery Scott or as we call him Scotty.

Scotty is in for a cultural & technological shock having been out of comission for 75 years trapped in the buffer and finding himself in the 24th century. Not only does he have to get used to a luxurious & huge USS Enterprise D and get used to seeing a Klingon aboard the vessel but he is also not upto speed on the technological changes that have been made. He finds himself out of place, unwanted & unable to fit in, especially when he tries to fit in by helping in Engineering but only manages to annoy Lt. LaForge. He has a strange bonding with Data while in 10 Forward, finding reach alcohol and also a kinship with Capt. Picard. He also manages to charm both Dr. Crusher & Councillor Troi. In the end LaForge & Scotty, who are both on the Jenolan when the Enterprise is caught inside the sphere and headed for destruction, help the Enterprise make it’s way out and safe from being destroyed.

Scotty, played by Canadian actor James Doohan, decides to head out to earth on a shuttle loaned from the Enterprise, seemingly going back to starfleet for a while before retiring for good. Doohan himself was born on March 3, 1920 in Vancouver, BC and was raised in Sarnia, Ontario. At age 19, Doohan joined the Royal Canadian Artillery and fought in the Second World War, landing on Juno Beach on D-Day. He was shot six times, taking four bullets in his leg, one that took off his middle right finger, and the other shot that was heading toward his chest was stopped by his silver cigarette case. In 1965, Doohan shot the pilot for Star Trek. When reading for the part, he tried eight different accents, and chose to have his character be a Scotsman. While Star Trek originally ran for just 3 seasons, from 1966 to 1969, obviously it became a cult classic and spawned four other series. Scotty became famous for lines such as “I can’t hold it together for much longer, Cap’n!” and “I’m giving it all I got!” Of course, the most famous line associated with his character was “Beam me up, Scotty.

Star Trek: Of Gods & Men

Star Trek : Of Gods & Men is an unofficial Star Trek 3 part mini-series created by its producers as a “40th Anniversary gift” from Star Trek actors to their fans. It was filmed in 2006, but its release was delayed until 2007-08. It is not officially endorsed by the rightsholders of Star Trek , and therefore not considered as cannon, but has been covered on the official Star Trek website. Just like the numerous fan created stories.

It’s fun to see some of the actors and characters that we have known & loved for so long once again. Of Gods & Men which was recently named by the SyFy Portal Genre Awards as the top web project of 2008, is directed by Tim Russ (who is famous for having portrayed the Vulcan Lt. Cmd. Tuvok in Star Trek Voyager) who also plays the same character here. Original Trek characters Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Chekov (Walter Koening)  are joined by Captain Harriman (Alan Ruck) as the main characters along with Russ. Garrett Wang, J G Hertzler, Chase Masterson, Cirroc Lofton, Gary Graham & Ethan Phillips have roles that are different from their established characters in Star Trek (DS9, Enterprise & Voyager).

Set in the year 2305, Captain Nyota Uhura attends the dedication of a new USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-M), a replica of the original 1701. It is designed as a museum ship and a tribute to all who served on the original Enterprise, especially to Captain Kirk’s sacrifice. Uhura meets up with her former crewmate now Captain Pavel Chekov and John Harriman, captain of the Enterprise-B as the ship is launched. It’s 12 years after the death of Captain Kirk. But a distress signal lures the crew to a distant world code-named M-622, which turns out to be the world of the fabled Guardian of Forever. Because of the actions of Charlie Evans (William Wellman), who has returned from Thasian space to exact vengeance upon Kirk, the three captains suddenly find themselves in an alternate universe of total domination. Charlie enters the portal and suddenly the world is changed.

In this parallel world, Harriman commands the starship Conqueror, serving a mysterious evil supreme being, hell bent on conquering the galaxy.  Harrimans’ crew include security chief Garan (Wang), first officer Koval (Hertzler), and the Orion communications officer Xela (Masterson). The 3 of them serve their captain but also plot to over throw the others and take command of the Conqueror. Harriman unleashes a weapon that destroys the planet Vulcan on which Uhura was living with her vulcan husband and her son, daughter in law & grandchildren. As the planet is destroyed, some Vulcans escape on ships; Uhuru & Tuvok are captured by Harriman. Also imprisoned are two rebel soldiers – freedom fighter Ragnar (Gary Graham from ENTERPRISE) and Kittreck (Koenig) – with their own agenda in mind for defeating Harriman.

Our heroes are able to discover that they have to change the timeline and take over the ship. Harriman is convinced that he is to help them and they get Charlie, a changed man in this lifetime to tell them what he did to make such drastic changes to the world. It turns out that Charlie had gone back in time through the portal and killed Captain James Kirk’s mother before she could deliver the legendary captain. The absence of one man led to such drastic alterations to this time line. Our heroes also have to battle the mysterious evil being, Gary Mitchell (who in the TOS pilot was killed) who had become so powerful. Charlie & Gary fight it out and Mitchell is rendered powerless and he beams back to his ship. Charlie goes back and changes what he did; the timeline changes.

In the closing scene we see a now retired Uhuru marrying her vulcan lover (who in the alternate time line was already her husband and had a son with her). Attending the ceremony on Vulcan are Chekov, Harriman and Janice Rand. Alls well that ends well. For a fan-based film, it’s brisk, fast, ambitious & fun. Forget the bad make up & special effects in this mini-series (hey they barely had a budget) and enjoy the show.

New Star Trek TV Series Being Pitched!

Great news or possible great news for Trekkies.

On Agust 23rd 2011, David Foster of 1947 Entertainment, who has been working since 2006 with co-originator Kevin Severson (who sadly died last September suddenly from a stroke) on a super secret Trek t.v. series pitch under the code name of S.E.T.I., submitted the idea for a new Star Trek tv series to CBS. The series concept is fully developed, subject to change of course, with a solid 5-7 year series plan, pilot script and a conceptualized finale that intends to define Star Trek for generations, extensive character bios, costume and ship/set designs, and more. This is a drastic departure from the typical 8-10 page treatment of the previously pitched Star Trek series ideas that have not included even a pilot script.

Apparently Foster has the support of past Trekkie producers, concept artists, visual designers and writers who are encouraging him to keep plugging away at his Trek series blueprint and finally it now seems after years of planning, he is ready to find the right executive producer (they have turned down some already) to take his pitch to CBS officially. The vision that the duo ave created is pre-2009 cannon and will be set in the Star Trek universe post the event of Voyager.

The series is set in the post-Voyager era, and is designed to return Star Trek to its original series roots in big and mighty ways, without disregarding the other series and movies. As Star Trek (2009) was an alternate timeline, it will not conflict with any canon there either. The co-creators are avid believers in Gene Roddenberry’s ‘positive view of the future’ and intend to bring Star Trek back to its origins while moving forward with the timeline, integrating the best aspects of each of the previous series.

We’ve heard recently about an awesome sounding but ultimately unrealised series titled Star Trek: Federations that Bryan Singer was trying to make a few years back before Paramount decided to go in the direction of a film franchise but for us that doesn’t mean a t.v. series can’t exist at the same time. In the 80?s and early 90?s, the original Star Trek crew made big screen movies whilst The Next Generation aired it’s seasons on the small screen and similarly when The Next Generation had their moment on the big screen…. Voyager, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise were on t.v.

New Tumble Blog

Star Trek as you know is one of my biggest passions in life. I am a fanatic. Everyone who reads this blog will know that. Not enough to blog once in a while about all things Star Trek, I have now created a new Tumblr blog wholly dedicated to what mankind should aspire to be like.

Star Trek : Images & Words is this boy’s humble little dedication to the wonderful world of Star Trek. It will feature images from the 5 live action tv series & 11 movies (and counting) and even other stuff connected to the great franchise. Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek as a vision of what he thought mankind should & could become. This tumble blog will be just a fansite to that dream. I love Star Trek. If there is one word that defines me let it be Trekkie.

Captain Benjamin Sisko

Star Trek characters are usually a lonely bunch. There’s a lot of tragic in their lives and knowing fully the dangers of a career in Starfleet – on either a starship or a space station in deep space – and also having to be away from family & friends for long stretches at a time. At times we have seen an officer who has his/her spouse on the same ship/station as them. One such person was Benjamin Sisko who, while as the first officer of the USS Saratoga, has his wife Jennifer & young son Jake aboard the ship he was assigned to. Ofcourse as Star Trek & Deep Space 9 fans are aware, that ended in anguish. While the Saratoga was engaged in the Battle of Wolf 359, Jennifer was one of those who perished in the Borg attack.

Commander Sisko was faced with the loss of his wife and raising his son alone. He found an outlet for his pain in his new posting at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars. There, Sisko worked on the prototype USS Defiant – the first in what was to be a fleet of warships to defend the Federation from the Borg. As his work there was winding down, with flaws coming in the designs, his former captain recommended him to take over the command post of Deep Space 9; a former ore mining space station built by the Cardassians during the occupation of Bajor.  It was to be Sisko’s responsibility to help prepare the newly liberated Bajorans for entry into the Federation. A first reluctant Sisko brought along his son Jake.

On his first visit to Bajor, Sisko would be declared as the Emissary of The Prophets (a worm hole dwelling alien species living outside of linear time and who the Bajors worshiped as their gods) by the then religious leader of Bajor and met them when he traveled into the wormhole. It was a title & respect that Benjamin would be uncomfortable with, his humility not letting him accept the fact that his Bajoran officers looked upon him as a religious figure. Although he had no idea at that time and it would take him more than 6 years to find out, his birth mother was a human possessed by one of the wormhole aliens or Prophet and was responsible for his birth. Therefore he was in a way part wormhole alien or part prophet! His birth mother left Ben & his father a year after Benjamin was born and he was raised by his father & his stepmom – who he always came to know as his own mother.

While in DS9 Benjamin would meet & fall in love with a cargo ship captain Kasidy Yates, who he also had to arrest once for shipping supplies to the Maquis. Their romance would still bloom and the two later got engaged and Kasidy got pregnant soon after. Sisko also had a deep love for Bajor, a planet & people he came to be closely linked with. I found it lonely & sad that at one point Sisko admitted that once the Dominion war was done, he wanted to retire on Bajor, where he had found a secluded spot and bought some land. He planned to build a house there and live alone. However ofcourse as his relation with Kasidy progressed, they both planned to build the house and live on Bajor for most of the time and visit Earth from time to time.

Sisko would never get to build the house or retire on Bajor. After the war was over and his enemies killed, Benjamin was taken by the Prophets to the Celestial Temple, Sisko appeared to Kasidy in a vision, telling her that he would someday return, and that he loved her. He left behind his son Jake, his new bride and unborn child. That was the last episode of DS9 so canon wise, we do not what happens afterwards.

Star Trek : Enterprise Season 3

I’ll admit it – when Enterprise first came out, I did not like it that much. I was prepared to hate it cause a) I did not really like prequels b) I did not like most of the cast and c) I did not like Scot Bakula at all! So if you do not like the main star, the captain, that didn’t leave Enterprise with much chance did it? The series was being shown in India on Star World (ooh the name matches) and I started watching season 1 at home in Thrikkakara. I liked the pilot, thought it was promising, and settled in to watch the show on a weekly basis. This must have been back in 2004. However the following few episodes didn’t exactly sparkle my imagination & fascination and I slowly lost a bit of interest. If I missed an episode, so what?

I really didn’t give the show much of a chance than I should have; I mean the very first long range Earth ship that heads out to different planets for exploration and meeting newer races and establishing first contact, beyond the clusters close to us. That alone should have made me cheer for the series and jump on board at the very beginning. But yeah – so anyway. I missed a few episodes in season 1 and then season 2 started and I got interested after a few really  good episodes. But as luck would have it, Star World stopped airing Enterprise and for the next 3 years I didn’t give the show much thought. When I started downloading tv series & movies from Torrent in 2009, Voyager was my first preference, then DS9 and the original series and HD copies of the movies. Enterprise was the last option but I did get to downloading it. I watched season 1 & season 2 and then was wowed by season 3!

The season starts with the premise, shown in the very last scenes of season 2, of a weapon by the Xindi, (a hitherto unknown  alien species) that destroys part of earth and kills 7 million people. And they could be back for more. At first they appeared as violent enemies wanting no interaction with humanity, but common ground gradually emerged as the crew of the Enterprise discovered that the Xindi were being manipulated into this enmity by a more mysterious race called the Sphere Builders. The latter group, calling themselves the guardians of the Xindi, have convinced the Xindi that in the future mankind will massacre them all so they must strike first. Being the most experienced team and the only ones capable of going that far that quickly, the Enterprise is dispatched to the Delphic Expanse to find the Xindi. Joining the Enterprise are a group of MACOs, an elite group of soldiers.

What follows is a dark series arc with a lot of deaths, carnage and gloom and very action filled. About 27 crewmen & women from the Enterprise gets killed. The ship gets the living shit kicked out of it a few times and is nearly destroyed herself. The characters are fully fleshed out & developed over this season. T’Pol & Trip start what is a really complicated relationship and they even have sex. The Xindi aren’t really all bad, as the crew find out, and they even build an alliance against the real villains – the Sphere Builders, who are finally destroyed in the end along with the weapon. And do you think that the crew gets to rest after all that? No, as the season ends, Captain Archer is throw into the past and finds himself, along with the rest of the crew right smack down in the midst of World War 2 in an alternative reality, with another alien species interferring with earth’s past and it’s up to our heroes to put things back in order! Really after all this!

As great as season 3 was it really left a void in the show’s epicenter. How do you top that? Season 4 became almost anti-climatic and it never really stood a chance after that. The show was cancelled mid-season but the final episodes were aired and the series was allowed to be brought to a conclusion. Albeit a very unsatisfactory one. But that is a blog post for another day! Season 3, I salute you.
