Meeting Friends

The last few weeks have seen me spend some time with friends but not as much as I’d like to. In April we have a really nice & fun get together on the 9th which created a lot of fond memories for me. From that day onwards me and another former colleague have been trying to find a suitable date to get all 10 of us to meet together for the first time since 2007 and it hasn’t worked till now. How hard can this be? May 1st was the deadline as 4 of them now live/work in different cities and they had some free days in the month of April but had to get back to their places on May 2nd. We planned, found a good venue close to everyone but one by everyone begged to change the date and it was just 3 of us who could make it. So cancelled/postponed.

We all felt bad & sad that it could not happen and made vague promises of meeting some other time. I know it’s gonna take time and who knows when it will happen. Two other similar events, with different people, got postponed and pushed and I dunno when they will take place. It’s easier to meet up with 2 or 3 other people but when the group is large it can become a hassle and frustrating if you are trying to organize the event. I know I felt so let down in April when I couldn’t get everyone to agree to spend 3-4 hours of their time on the same day at the same time. But you know, these things happen.

Tomorrow I am supposed to meet up with 3 of my friends for dinner in a place nearby. It’s a nice place where I have been exactly once and I do miss these friends & former colleagues of mine. I hope it happens, I’m free and the other 3 also seem eager to meet up for a couple of hours. And Saturday my buddy Anil and I have plans to spend some time during lunch and perhaps get a few drinks as well. Got my fingers crossed.

Are There Any Tech Gadgets You’re Eyeing?

Yes some but for all practical purposes, I will be able to get only one of them in the near future. But one can have a wishlist so I have a little list of items that I would love to get if finances suddenly improve:

My laptop will turn 2 years old in June. I think it’s the perfect time to do a backup of all data, sell it and get a replacement new laptop. Although I love Lenovo, I would love to try another brand like HP and the Pavillion g6 series looks affordable for me. This would be for my primary computing needs.

I’ve been thinking : netbook or tablet pc? Tablets seem the way to go nowadays and I would love to own a BlackBerry Playbook 2.0. This would go so well with my Bold 9780. And speaking of which:

Although I love my BlackBold 9780 it is a OS6 device. The late models use OS7 and I would kill to get one of the above models. The fight is for between the Bold 9900 & the Bold 9790 and Torch 9810 & the Torch 9860. I really like the look of all 4 devices but pushed to shove would go for the Torch 9860 if I could. It’s so sexy & sleek.

And one that is seemingly impending & urgent. I guess I will have to take care of this first. My 1TB & 320 GB drives are almost filled and I will need more space to save all the stuff that I want to download. Now that I have 1MB downloading speed at night, I will be quickly filling up the empty drive space in no time. I like WD as they are so reliable but I would also like to try out Toshiba drives as well.

The Big Bang Theory – Season 1

I avoided watching this show for a very long time. Why? I dunno know – it has the deliciously, blonde goodness in the form of Kaley Cuoco in it! Apart from her I didn’t know any of the other cast and wasn’t that interested in watching any more sitcoms as most have let me down plus I really get annoyed when the laughing track gets stuck for no apparent reason at times! After having watched and loved a couple of comedy shows with no laughing track to prompt me to laugh at their jokes, I wasn’t sure of following a show where the laughing track treats viewers like idiots! But finally I had to yield – I happened to catch 3 episodes on The Big Bang Theory on cable and it’s filled with Star Trek references, so how can I not embrace this show? Plus it’s really funny and they have a Barenaked Ladies song as their theme song!

So I started season 1 and completed the 17 episodes in just 2 days and loved every minute. How can you not love the awkward, gangly, nerdy, brilliant and totally & unabashedly arrogant genius that is Sheldon Cooper! And the awkward & geeky romantic at heart Leonard Hofstadter or the not at all a ladies man but thinks he is that it is so funny Howard Wolowitz? And ofcourse representing the Indian sub-continent Rajesh Koothrappali (is he supposed to be a Malayallee from Delhi?). They watch scifi series, discuss & argue scientific theories, are actual brainy scientists (all have their PHDs except for Howard), go to attend ComicCon, buy & read comic books, watch all Planet Of The Apes movies, have marathon Halo and other game sessions and yes, there’s lots of Star Trek, Star Wars and BSG references. And ofcourse that means that these are geeks & nerds and have very little luck with women and fail at social skills. But in the case of Sheldon, he doesn’t care, while the others try to excel.

And then there is Penny who moves to the apartment across the hall from Sheldon & Leonard. Leonard is smitten by her immediately and they do become friends even though she keeps dating other guys. One of the running gags is Raj’s inability to talk to Penny as he suffers from selective mutism in the presence of attractive women. Sheldon’s wanting to be babied when he catches the flu and wanting Penny to sing “Soft kitty, warm kitty, Little ball of fur, Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, Purr, purr, purr” – I almost died laughing! Penny becomes the 5th member of the group, often joining Sheldon, Leonard, Raj & Howard for lunch or dinner and in some of their activities. She invites them for her Halloween party where her ex confronts Leonard and Penny sides with Leonard. She also stays at their apartment when her promiscuous friend Christy hooked up with Howard and takes over her apartment. Raj is ordered by his parents to meet with Lalitha Gupta, a possible bride for him, but in the end she is more fascinated with Sheldon.

Sheldon goes his way and forms a new team consisting of the 3rd floor janitor, the lunch lady, and her son (or butcher) for the physics bowl contest and competes against his 3 friends and his arch-nemesis Leslie Winkle, who always belittles him and calls him ‘dumbass’. And how can you not love it when the four friends pool in money to buy a time machine from the 1960 film The Time Machine, and pretend to move fast in time when one of them uses the device. So funny! And Sheldon’s fraternal twin sister – zoinks what a hottie she is – also joins in for an episode as do their mother for another. The closeness of the friends are examined when they throw Leonard his first ever birthday party (he never had one in his life) which is a funny, funny episode. At the end of season 1, Leonard & Penny go out on their first date and kiss.

Looking forward to watching season 2.

Smoking In Bars & Pubs

I am currently posting this from a lounge style bar. Just having a beer and some fish for lunch.

Ok on the subject of smoking in bars and pubs, I am totally against it. I’m a former smoker, although I smoked quite infrequently. Like I have stated before, I smoked because my cousins and some friends smoked. I was 18 when I started and smoked for almost 4 years when I just quit thinking I needed to. I have bronchitic asthma and it just made sense. Since then I haven’t smoke a single cigarette and although I’d like to get some cigars for the odd occasion I haven’t yet.

The smell of cigarette does put me off. It stinks, unless you smoke menthol ones. I can’t be in the same closed room as a smoker now because of my breathing issues although I’m ok if there is a big window or if we are outside. I have stood outside my old office and joined conversations with colleagues who were smoking at the time, while I stood a little bit away. But not in a closed room. Which is why I was so glad when my state banned smoking in bars and restaurants. I don’t think smoking is good plus the stench, stink and smoke is an inconvenience to those around you. Some clubs over here do allow you to smoke in the open sections of their dining areas or they have smoking zones. That is ok. But having to breathe in second smoke without you wanting to is just bad (I wouldn’t know of anyone who would like to taken in second hand smoke by choice anyway) and it is more harmful than smoking itself.

My cousin used to either leave the room and go up to the second floor of her house or get her father to smoke outside the house. While it might seem funny or cruel to some, I used to applaud her for it. That’s what I have to say about the topic. Now if only they could manufacture cigars that give out some delicious flavoured and totally harmless gas when lit! I would so pick it up again!

Insidious

I like horror movies a lot. But I prefer the ones without all the disgusting overkill of blood, gore & guts spilling around all over the place. That is just gross. But I like a good scare. Insidious promised to give me that and so I though Paranormal Activity + Saw, should be good! Insidious is a psychological horror film written by Leigh Whannell (who wrote Saw), directed by James Wan, and co-produced by Oren Peli and starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye and  Barbara Hershey. How well did this movie fare against the current fare of horror movies? Let’s find out.

We see a darkened room with a small boy sleeping on a bed and a scary old woman lurking in the background. Cut to present day and we have Renai and Josh Lambert who have just moved into a new house with their 3 kids – young boys Dalton, Foster and baby daughter. While going through some old photos of Renai as a kid, Dalton asks why there aren’t any pic of his father as a boy. Renai answers that he was probably very camera shy as a child. A few nights later Dalton sees something that scares him and falls down a ladder while in the attic. Although he appears to be fine, he falls into a coma the next day and at the hospital the doctors cannot explain it. After 3 months, Dalton is moved home where he can be monitored while still in a coma.

Soon after that disturbing events happen at the house. Foster is scared to sleep in the room next to his brother. Renai soon believes that the house is haunted after she sees scary figures and other unexplainable things that even Josh can’t deny. They move to a new house but more scary things happen there. Scared they have Josh’s mother Lorraine contact a friend, Elise Reiner, who deals with paranormal activities. She arrives with her associates Specs & Tucker and asks to go around the house. In Dalton’s room she sees a figure and describes it to Specs who shows the Lamberts a drawing of a black figure with a red face and dark hollow eyes on the ceiling of Dalton’s room. Josh is skeptical but relents when he see a similar drawing that Dalton did a few days before he fell into a coma. Elise explains that the house is not haunted but that rather Dalton is! She tells them that as the ability to astral project while sleeping and that he has been doing it since he was very young.

Apparently Dalton wasn’t scared as he believes that he was dreaming but he traveled further into other worlds and is now lost in a land called ‘The Further’, which is a place for tormented souls of the dead. While the souls crave another chance at life, there are also demons that want to want to possess Dalton’s body to cause malice. They run a session to contact Dalton’s spirit but also run into the demon and 3 other spirits who want Dalton’s body. After the session Elisse & Lorraine reveal that Josh had the same ability as a child and during his astral projection he was terrorized by an evil spirit during his childhood. Lorraine shows them a few photos of Josh as a child with a  shadowy old woman coming closer & closer to him in each photo. This explains why there were no photos of his childhood and why Josh hates being photographed. Lorraine had called Elise to help Josh fight the spirit but Josh forgot about it as young children tend to do. Elise suggests that Josh try to use his ability to find and help return Dalton’s soul.

Josh does so and goes to the Further and finds his son’s spirit, who is a prisoner of the red faced demon. Josh frees Dalton and the two flee back to the house. On the way Josh sees the old lady and confronts her, telling her to leave him alone. Moments later, Josh and Dalton both awaken, just as all the spirits vanish. A starving Dalton is taken to the kitchen by Lorraine and Renai as he eats solid food for the first time in months. Elise’s team are packing their equipment in their van, while in the living room Elise senses something wrong with Josh. She quickly snaps a photo of him and he goes into a rage and chokes her to death. When Renai comes to the living room, she finds only the camera there and is shocked to see a Polaroid of the old woman, meaning she has possessed Josh. As Renai looks at the photo in despair, Josh comes from behind and places his hand on her shoulder as Renai gasps.

Cool movie, quite scary in places although the red faced demon looked more than ridiculous when we finally see him. Lin Shaye as Elise is great as is the beautiful Rose Bryne. Good for some scares. 8 outta 10!

SyFy Cancels Sanctuary

So it’s official. SyFy cancelled the Amanda Tapping helmed science fiction series Sanctuary. Ending months of speculation and smashing fans’ hopes for a fifth season, the network confirmed on Monday that the show will halt at 4 seasons. Thus ends another scifi series and the network called SyFy will continue to air reality shows and WWE and who knows what!

Sanctuary was about a team led by semi-immortal scientist Helen Magnus that protects and/or captures the world’s abnormals–those beings that hunt or are hunted by humans–starred Amanda Tapping, Robin Dunne, Ryan Robbins, Christopher Heyerdahl. Agam Darshi was a series regular for 2 season and a recurring character for the 4th, while Pascale Hutton guest starred for seasons 3 & 4. Sanctuary was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques–including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology–and Emmy-nominated visual effects.

Through the series the makers started the charitable foundation Sanctuary for Kids which has raised over $250,000 for children in crisis worldwide.

Deception Point – Dan Brown

Rachel Sexton is the estranged daughter Senator Sedgewick Sexton, a presidential candidate who is more popular than incumbent President of the United States Zachary Herney. But she is also an Intelligence Analyst who works for the NRO. The Prez sends her to the Milne Ice Shelf to validate the findings made by NASA – a meteorite which struck the earth around 190 million years and embedded within an are insect fossils very similar to, but not the same as, species on earth. NASA claims this as proof of extraterrestrial life.  The President also sends four leading civilian scientists (Michael Tolland, a famous oceanographer and TV personality; Corky Marlinson, a brilliant but eccentric astrophysicist; Norah Mangor, a prickly glaciologist and Wailee Ming, a palaeontologist) to the Arctic to verify the meteorite’s authenticity as unbiasedly as possible.

However a plot is soon discovered to fake the fossils (actually a recently found earth lifeform but not yet published) and that the powerful NRO director William Pickering is the mastermind behind it. He did it to hurt Senator Sexton’s campaign, protecting the American people in his eyes and also to boost the NASA supporting President’s chances of reelection. Sexton wants to cut NASA’s fundings and promises to spend more on education if elected President. However President Herney himself is unaware of this plot and genuinely believes that NASA has found authentic findings. Pickering has his small squad of black ops soldiers kill Dr. Ming & Dr. Mangor when a flaw in the data is discovered.

It is up to Rachel, Tolland & Marlinson to evade the NRO Director and his men and get the evidence of the fraud findings out to the public. Add to this mix is Gabrielle Ashe – Senator Sexton’s aide and former lover – who finds out that the Senator is selling out to private companies & plans to make space exploration go public. He has been accepting large sums of cash from the companies to fund his campaign. When she finds out this and the fact that she was being lied to by the Senator, Gabrielle decides to help Rachel expose the Senator. Marjorie Tench the Senior Adviser to the President is also killed when she comes close to finding the conspiracy that Pickering had set in place.

A good political & deception thriller, although not as good as the other 3 books of Dan Brown that I had read. Still a good real.

Robin Gibb not only co-wrote many of the Bee Gees’ best-known songs, he also sang lead vocals for the group in their formative years. The Bee Gees peaked in the disco era with the music but proved a formidable force in the industry, selling more than 120 million records over a career that spanned four decades. The group has had 15 top 10 records in the United States, including six consecutive No. 1 singles in the late ’70s, and won six Grammy Awards. Despite early success and comparisons to The Beatles, they were mostly known for being at the forefront of the disco era. Members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Gibb and the Bee Gees leave behind a string of memorable songs and albums, including the record-breaking soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever and it’s dance anthem Stayin’ Alive. Despite the group’s popularity, Robin Gibb always stayed committed to a solo career, releasing many albums (7) and numerous singles to varying degrees of success. One such album was How Old Are You? which spawned the hit Juliet. The song didn’t make a splash in the U.S. or the U.K., but was popular in many European countries, hitting No. 1 in Germany and Italy.

Robin’s death is the latest heartache for the family, which has suffered a string of misfortunes, including the 1988 death of youngest brother Andy, 30, and the 2003 passing of Robin’s twin, Maurice, 53. He leaves behind his second wife Dwinna and son, a son & daughter from his first marriage and one out of wedlock.

Robin Hugh Gibb, CBE (22 December 1949 – 20 May 2012)

The Muppets

Like millions of other kids The Muppets were a huge part of my childhood. I don’t think they were shown on Indian television until cable tv was introduced and even then perhaps very little but I was lucky enough to catch the Muppet Show on Kuwait tv while I was living there. But it had been a long, long time since I had seen anything related to them, save for clips on Youtube and some odd stuff here & there. That’s why I was pleasantly surprise that they were doing a movie on the Muppets, a comeback of sorts. The Muppets is a 2011 live action comedy film, the first Muppets theatrical release in 12 years, the film is directed by James Bobin, written by Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller and stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones.

While I watched with some childish happiness, Walter (who is a muppet born to a human family) who lives in Smalltown, USA with his human brother Gary. Both of them are huge Muppets fans and they grow up watching the show on tv a lot. When Gary plans a trip to Los Angeles with his girlfriend Mary to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a couple, he invites Walter along so they can visit the Muppet studios. Mary is a bit disappointed as she has hoped it to be just the two of them but she is too nice to object. While at the abandoned, derelict studios Walter sneaks into Kermit’s old office and overhears Statler and Waldorf selling the theater to Tex Richman, an oil magnate, and his henchmen Bobo the Bear and Uncle Deadly. If the Muppets can raise $10 million they can repurchase the theater as there is a clause in the contract that says so. Richman revealing his plans to destroy the Muppet Theater and drill for oil underneath, and later warns Gary and Mary about Richman’s intentions.

Walter gets Gary & Mary to take him to Kermit’s mansion where they find Kermit all alone. Kermit realizes that he must get the old group back together and organize a show which they haven’t done in a long time. Fozzie Bear, who is performing in a small club  the Moopets, a group of uncouth Muppet impersonators which includes a man (Dave Grohl) dressed as Animal. Gonzo has become rich in the plumbing business. Animal is in an anger-management clinic, with Jack Black who tells him not to play the drums to keep his temper in check! They get all of the muppets to join and that leaves them with going to Paris and meeting Miss Piggy, working as Vogue Paris’s editor for “plus-sized” fashion in Paris. She is not convinced to join them (she wants Kermit to admit that ‘he’ needs her and not that the group needs her) so they get Miss Poggy from the Moopets to replace her. After much rejection, CDE network executive Veronica gives the Muppets a two-hour opening in CDE’s schedule as long as they can get a celebrity host.

Miss Piggy finally returns and takes her place but they can’t find a celebrity host so Miss Piggy has the Muppets kidnap Jack Black as a celebrity guest. Mary goes alone on a sight seeing trip as Gary helps Walter, who is also going to perform, for the big night. Gary forgets his anniversary dinner with Mary and she leaves for Smalltown. Fearing the worst Kermit goes to Richman and asks him for the studio back but learns that the Texan plans to sell their trademark name and rights which he plans to give to the Moopets. Gary goes and apologizes to Mary and brings her back to the show. People slowly start piling in and each act is a success, despite Jack Black’s protest on being kidnapped. Although initially Walter is scared he finally shows up and does a beautiful whistling song. Kermit reconciles with Miss Piggy and the Muppets perform “Rainbow Connection”. Richman in desperation cuts the power & disables the telephone lines and finally evicts the Muppets from the theater, out of time and short of their monetary goal.

Although dejected Kermit & friends leave the theatre but are greeting by thousands of cheering fans. With Gary’s encouragement, Walter greets the crowd with the Muppets. Gary proposes to Mary and Richman gives the theater and rights back to the Muppets after suffering a head injury from Gonzo’s bowling ball act. All’s well that ends well. And ofcourse we have a musical number at the end.

Feel good movie and I hope it revitalizes the Muppets and bring them back for more stuff on tv & movies. Silly yes, a bit cheesy but it’s good cheese. I loved it and it’s a 8 out of 10 for me!

What’s On Your Phone?

Here is a continuation of the customization of my cell phone. Last time out I let you know what ringtones & alerts I use on my BlackBerry Bold 9780. Another huge part of personalization on cell phones are wallpapers and theme. I currently use the default Bold theme on my phone but I have a few wallpapers that I downloaded from Zedge.net (check it out; they have lots of free stuff for all kinds of phones). The one I currently use is this one below on the left and ofcourse on the right is how it looks on my phone:

And now to the apps that I use. I don’t have that many but the ones I do use are:

Gtalk: the Gtalk version for BlackBerry app for my chat buddies who use gmail

Facebook: the official BlackBerry Facebook app

Twitter: the official BlackBerry Twitter app

Foursquare: is a location-based social networking website for mobile devices, such as smartphones.

Molome: It’s kinda like Instagram. For photos and some editing options on your photos

WordPress: the official WordPress for BlackBerry app

Senators : the official BlackBerry app for news, stats & scores of my fav NHL team, the Ottawa Senators

Capture it: is to take a snap of your phone’s screen at that moment. Think ‘printscreen’ on your computer.

CrackBerry app: access to CrackBerry’s forums, discussion boards etc

Goodbye Tata Indicom; Hello Reliance

I finally did it. After months of threatening to do it I finally have taken up a new broadband connection with Reliance and have sent a cancellation request of my 5 year+ Tata Indicom connection. I have just had enough of their really bad services and frequent disconnections and delay in getting problems fixed, their pathetic technical staff’s incompetent resolutions, bad customer care services and pathetic response via emails. I have had so much trouble with those half-wits that I have had enough.

Two cable disconnections ago I told the tech guys who called me up that “you know that there is a problem with frequent cable being ripped from the post because the trucks carrying goods are rather careless and they don’t bother to check and see what damage they are causing. If that is the case you need to change the post or make it higher or do something. I can’t have frequent disconnections and then wait for 3 to 4 days while you get a new cable and fix the problem.” The next time it happened, late last month it took 4 days for them to show up and fix the issue. I kept calling the helpline and hassling supervisors and only then did it get fixed. I made them waive of some of the monthly rent as well as I had a total of 7 days downtime. But I had decided that enough was enough, customer loyalty my ass!! I wanted to check out various other providers.

I chose Reliance because 1) people nearby who have their connection have no issues and 2) they have a better plan with faster speed and at lower rates than what I am currently using with Tata! It’s a no-brainer. I applied for one and they fixed it up today. Hallelujah! I can’t wait for tonight to check the faster speeds I get past 10pm! So good bye Tata! Hello Reliance!

Unforgettable – Season 1

Unforgettable is a crime/police tv series originally ran on CBS from September 20, 2011 to May 8, 2012. I’ve been following this series on the internet, watching episodes online or downloading them. How is this series different from the other cop & detective shows you ask? Well the series is focused on the lead character detective Carrie Wells (Aussie actress Poppy Montgomery) who has hyperthymesia, a rare medical condition that gives her the ability to visually remember everything. Yes everything from the age of 8 when her sister was killed, ironically the one event that she cannot remember much off but desperately wants to. After her sister’s death Carrie started to observe things and her ability to remember each details helps in solving cases.

Carrie was a former Syracuse, New York detective who left the force 9 years ago as her obsession with finding her sister’s murder kept interfering with her work. She kept following up on leads and even over interrogating suspects so much that her lover & training officer Al Burns had to restrain her on occasion. After 5 years on the force, her sister’s murder investigation was shut down, Carrie wanted a new life and moved to New York City to put her past life behind her. She also brought her mother who suffers from early onset of Alzheimer’s disease and is currently living at a recovery home. Carrie starts helping out at the recovery home and using her memory to help her count cards and win at gambling to finance her life and her mother’s medical bills.

9 years have past when by chance she meets up with Lt. Al Burns who now heads the homicide team at his precinct. When a woman in killed in Carrie’s building, Carrie is pulled into the investigation and upon it being solved is asked by Burns to return to active cop duty and join his team. She reluctantly agrees as Burns also says that she can reopen the investigation into her sister’s murder and work on it during non-case days. She also finally remembers the face of the killer she saw. Most of the initial few episodes focuses on Carrie’s ability to recollect things, putting herself in the scene as she replays it in her mind. The producers of the series show her watching herself and scenes unfold as she looks back for details that she may have missed. This is done a lot initially to establish her abilities in the viewers minds as much as possible before they go into more interesting cases later on in the series. Indeed the feel of the show in the last say 8 episodes is a different as the series steps up a notch and things become even more interesting.

Dylan Walsh plays Burns who is still good friends & protective of Carrie. He knows that she sometimes does things her own way to solve a crime or bring a criminal to justice.Kevin Rankin plays Det. Roe Sanders a junior detective who’s one of Carrie and Al’s co-workers. He tends to make good-natured jokes about Carrie’s ability. Michael Gaston plays Det. Mike Costello a veteran cop and Al’s right-hand man. Daya Vaidya plays Det. Nina Inara a sassy, street-smart typical NYC cop. Later on in the show two additional characters are added – Jane Curtin as Dr. Joanne Webster, who becomes Carrie’s friend, is an experienced Medical Examiner of the NYPD. She becomes Carried confidant and helps her in finding a lead for her sister’s killer. And Britt Lower who plays Tanya Sitkowsky, the department’s techno-whiz who does analysis and all over technical stuff. She and Roe like her other.

When a persistent ADA Adam Gilroy comes into the picture, helping Carrie and later turning on her and framing her for murder, a huge fraud is discovered – Gilroy is actually a brilliant former criminal who traded places with his attorney many years ago as they were of the same build and closely resembled each other. A little plastic surgery did the rest and for almost 20 years ‘Gilroy’ has been a lawyer. His role in framing Carrie and killing a couple of people is found out and he dies when he falls off a bridge. In the season finale Carrie goes back to Syracuse with Burns to trace her sister’s killer when a girl is killed in the same fashion as Rachel. However the man they caught turns out to be someone who found Carrie near her sister’s dead body and not the actual killer. However this man, a former cop, had bee trying to find out the real killer as well and some of his notes may help Carrie in her investigation. They find a man who killed the girl in Syracuse but the former cop dies in the chase.

As the season ends Burns takes Carrie back to NYC, having renewed their love for each other. What’s in store for season 2? Dunno but I like this show especially the last 8 or so episodes when it shifts into a higher gear. The characters are good and especially Poppy Montgomery – hot, killer body, pouty lips, red hair man – oh man!! Schaaaawing!!!

Haywire

Billed as a female Jason Bourne and the coming out/launch pad for the awesome Gina Carano Haywire looked awesome in trailers. What’s more the movie packed a punch in the supporting group of actors hired to push this movie & Carano – how’s Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas and Bill Paxton as her dad sound? With this many veteran actors plus newer stars like Fassbender & Channing Tatum & Steven surrounding Carano in this movie, Soderberg directing it and the premise it should soar up the Box Office charts shouldn’t it? Not quite as the movie did terribly and just managed to get a bit more than it’s budget at the theatres.

However, as you and I know very well, it doesn’t mean that the movie is bad. It just means that it failed to captivate a fickle audience’s fancy. And while you may flock to Harry Potter & Twilight series, I won’t. I liked this movie a lot and Ms.Carano captured my heart. Let’s see what the movie is about shall we?

In flashback scenes we come to know that Mallory Kane works for a private firm employed by the American government for covert operations. The firm’s director Kenneth attends a meeting Washington DC with veteran government agent Coblenz and Spanish contact Rodrigo. Coblenz wants to hire the firm to rescue Jiang who is being held hostage in an apartment in Barcelona. He also insists that Mallory be on the team. Mallory and her team, which includes Aaron, travel to Barcelona and despite difficulties succeed in rescuing Jiang and delivering him to Rodrigo. Once she is back to the US, Kenneth (who is also Mallory’s former lover) approaches her at her apartment and ask her to take a simple assignment before she leaves the firm – pose as the wife of BritishMI6 agent Paul during a mission in Dublin. After some persuasion, Mallory agrees.

At Dublin she meets with Paul and they get ready to go to  a party at Russborough House, where they meet with his contact, Studer. Not trusting Paul, Mallory uploads a tracking software so she can monitor his movements on her BlackBerry. As she watches from afar, Paul & Studer meet in private and she sees Paul go into a bar. Once he leaves she enters to find Jiang dead, clutching  clutching in his hand a brooch which Kenneth had insisted she wear as a recognition signal for her initial contact with Paul. Mallory is being setup by Kenneth & Paul. Once they leave the party and go back to their hotel room, Paul attacks her on entering the room. An awesome fight scene later Mallory gets the upper hand and shoots Paul dead. She calls Kenneth from Paul’s cell and his opening statements reveal that he was part of the setup. Mallory leaves as cops enter the hotel and she evades them while having to fight off a couple of them and makes her way to England. She also calls Rodrigo to know if he was part of the setup. This prompts Rodrigo to call Coblenz, who then calls Mallory.

Colblenz says he is on her side and says that he had doubts of Kenneth embezzling money using his firm as a front. Mallory then goes back to the US via Canada and goes to meet her father. At a diner she is met by Aaron who tries to take her by force but she fights back. She takes a customer Scott and they drive away in his car. She informs Scott as to what has happened and says that he should tell this to the cops if they are caught. After a chase they are caught up the cops when they hit a tree after a deer runs into Scott’s car. They are both taken into custody, but soon the police are ambushed by Kenneth’s assassins posing as federal agents. Mallory manages to free herself and save Scott and escape from there, killing on of the assassins. She finally makes it to her father’s house before Kenneth, Aaron and some others can get to him.  Aaron starts to realize, after receiving a photograph on his phone of Jiang lying dead, that Mallory might have been set up. Aaron tries to pressurize Kenneth for the truth but is shot in the abdomen and is left for dead.

Making sure that her father is safe Mallory then meets up with Coblenz and his men. She tells him to help Scott which he says he will do. Before Mallory leaves, Coblenz offers her a government job but she replies only that she’ll let him know, after she finds Kenneth. She finds Kenneth hiding in Mexico and makes his confess when is foot gets stuck between two rocks and the tide about to come in. He tells her that Jiang was a journalist who wrote some series of articles exposing Studer’s crimes. Kenneth arranged for her to rescue Jiang and deliver him to Rodrigo, who then delivered him to Studer, who had Paul kill him. Kenneth then framed Mallory, and even convincing Paul that Mallory was a double agent whom he should kill. On hearing this Mallory leaves and Kenneth  drown in the incoming tide for his betrayal. A few days later she arrives in Majorca to confront Rodrigo and we assume she kills him and then goes to work for the US government with the job that Coblenz promised her. The last scene is Rodrigo on seeing Mallory jump down from the roof to face him and he says one word – ‘shit’!

I thought that the movie was good, felt kinda like a European movie and in some aspects a throwback to spy movies of the 60s & 70s. There isn’t much score building up to heighten the fight or suspense scenes. The movie does lack some points and I guess that’s why it tanked. I however still liked it a lot and would give it an 8 out of 10! I hope Gina Carano gets to make more good movies.

One Night At A Concert

Time to reach back into the archives of my brain and bring out an old memory from my youth and share it with you. This was November 1995 (aged 19) and I was in Bangalore at that time. From my college & hostel a friend called Renjith and I wanted to go out on Saturday and attend a rock concert being performed across the metro in the evening. The band performing was one from Chennai, who played 99% covers but were known to be very good. We made plans and bought tickets a couple of days in advance and after classes were done we went back to the hostel for a change of clothes and collecting our bag (he would be staying his uncle’s house post the concert and I would be going to my cousin’s house). At 4:30 pm we went to the bus stop and waited for a bus to go to the large open grounds that served as the venue for the concert.

Almost an hour passed by and we were near the venue. We stopped to have some coffee and buy some snacks and waited near the venue to open. At 6pm they opened the gates and we were among the first to show our tickets to the guards and enter the lush green grass of the grounds. We settled with our bags near the front of the stage and waited for the crowds to fill in. There must have been around 20,000 people that came for the concert, a lot for a local band but this was before the big international bands started performing in India and the music crazy fans in Bangalore were hungry for any band to come & perform. A little later a local band who were the opening act did their 45 minutes worth of songs and they were not bad. But everyone was waiting for the band from Chennai (I can’t remember their name at all) and they did come out with a bang – I even remember the first song they performed, War -an instrumental from Joe Satriani. They were very good and they had a fantastic singer, an expat from Italy and his brother played rhythm guitars. Their lead guitarist was awesome and he did some fantastic solos.

The band went on to perform songs from Iron Maiden, Dio, Sabbath, GnR, Aerosmith and so many others. One funny incident – when the band played a slow ballad, the organizers would dim the lights and you could hardly see anything. During the first ballad a group of guys were doing a congo line or human train kind thing and they banged and bashed their way through the crowd. When the song was over and the lights were back to normal, Renjith and I found out that we were both at two ends of the ground! Not wanting to get separated, as it was just the two of us in that sea of humanity. So we decided that when the next ballad comes up and they dim the lights, we would hold on to each’s hand other to avoid getting separated. 3 songs later, the band plays a ballad and the lights went out. I immediately reached out and grabbed Renjith’s arm and we managed to not get separated even though the human train went banging through and hit us twice. Good thinking eh?

Errr, no! When the lights came back on, I looked and saw that I was actually holding on to some girl from the North East (oriental looking chick) and she was as surprised as I was to know that a a stranger was holding her arm!!!! Come to think of it, the arm was kinda soft for a guy, so I should have known that it wasn’t Renjith. I let go of her arm and went looking for my buddy – he was pushed and shoved all the way across the grounds and was just walking back to me and asked “Hey, who’s your girlfriend?” That was hilarious at the time!! Also during the 20 minute break, we relaxed with some Pepsi an were sitting on the grass when we saw two chicks walking fast and looking all nervous – some drunk Tamilian was chasing them in a funny manner and singing a dumb song! That broke us up and we were laughing for a long time. At the end of the concert we managed to get autos and got dropped at our respective places. Fun night that I won’t ever forget.
