Criminal Minds – Season 6

For one of the most cerebral tv series out there, the producers of Criminal Minds went and did a stoopid thing! They let AJ Cook go due to contract negotiations failing. Yes, JJ only appears in the first two episodes and her departure is explained with a new job offer that she can not ignore, but is almost forced to take up by the FBI. This happens after part two of hunting the “Prince of Darkness” to retrieve Spicer’s daughter, in which JJ negotiates with him to release the girl. To replace her the makers introduced Rachel Nichols as  FBI Cadet Agent Ashley Seaver; she appeared as a guest star for two episodes and was then promoted as a regular, but departed after the season finale.

Let’s get to the cases : Rossi believes that an old murderer with Alzheimer’s, whose case has haunted him for 25 years, has appeared again after several women are found dead in the same manner. The BAU travels to Akron, Ohio to investigate a series of murders on couples, who are forced to have sex before being murdered and then another case where they are called in to investigate the murders of entire families. The BAU is called in to Detroit to investigate after several people are found burned alive once a year before Halloween, which they later find out that the victims chosen by the unsub are not random.  the BAU must race against time when they realize they only have two days to find the latest victim who has just been kidnapped, when the bodies of exotic dancers are found murdered in the corn fields of Indiana two days after being kidnapped. Then it’s back to DC where an unsub cuts off the lips of his female victims.

The BAU team has to go deep into the forests of the Appalachian Trail after a man who targets young boys in the wilderness. Morgan testifies that a man should be released on parole but regrets his decision when, only days later, it seems that the man kills somebody. Two young lovers embark on a murder spree in Montana that sends the BAU team to investigate and stop them before they kill again. The team then has to track down a bogus self motivational coach who kills her patients in New York, who targets weaker willed young women.  Reid tries to make a connection with an autistic child to help in finding the boy’s missing parents in Lafayette, Louisiana. The BAU hunts a stalker in San Diego who is targeting college students. The the BAU is called to a North Carolina resort town after a woman is found badly injured and another woman is missing. On arrival, the team discovers these two women are not the only victims. The discovery of bodies buried in the ocean floor off Jacksonville prompts the BAU to intervene; Morgan’s aunt suspects her missing daughter may be among the dead. The team tries to close the most challenging case involving two bodies and a human trafficking organization.

Ok now the second major change. Prentiss is alerted by her former colleagues in Interpol that a man named Ian Doyle has escaped from prison in North Korea. We flashback to a past undercover job in Italy, during which she was acting as his girlfriend and surveiling Doyle. One by one her old team members are killed by Doyle and his men. it is revealed that Prentiss had been a spy eight years previously, on a task force profiling terrorists; while undercover, she met Ian Doyle (an arms dealer) and became his lover. Her betrayal of Doyle led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment, including time in a North Korean prison. Prentiss tracks down Doyle in Boston and tries to kill him, but he takes her hostage. Prentiss reveals to Doyle that his son, who he believed had been killed, is alive, and that she staged photos of her executing the boy in order to get Doyle to break under interrogation in North Korea. The two start fighting, and Doyle stabs Prentiss in the abdomen with a stake; even though she is dying, she refuses to tell him where his son is hiding, and Doyle escapes shortly before the FBI reaches her.

In the hospital, the BAU team is notified that Prentiss has died, and they attend her funeral. The last scene, however, reveals she is alive and in Paris, where JJ meets her and gives her an envelope with “passports from three different countries, and a bank account in each one to keep [her] comfortable. As the team copes with her loss (only JJ & Hotch are aware of her still being alive) Hotch tells them that there will a further change in team. This change turns out to be a positive one as the season ends with Rossi meeting JJ in his office and asking her if she was ready to come back to which she says “yes”.

Fractures & Broken Bones

I’ve had a couple of fractures. Twice in two years – 1992 and 1993 – the ages of 16-17. The first time in ’92 when we had a power outage I was coming out of my room to go get a candle and unfortunately I banged my right foot against a hard wooden furniture. Although it was painful, I shook it off and went by my business. A day or two later I started experiencing pain on the foot as I walked to and fro college but I wasn’t paying it much attention. However soon it became obvious to everyone that I was limping and I had to face the fact that I might need to get it looked at. At the hospital an x-ray showed that I had a hairline fracture on my foot and was told to have the foot wrapped up and get perfect rest for a week to 10 days. Ofcourse I got full treatment from home with my sister & cousin sister (who was staying with us at the time) catering to my every need, fetching me my food and drinks, pillows and anything else I fancied

The second time I had a fracture was in 2005 just a month or so after my 29th birthday. In a similar incident, late one night I was startled by a loud metallic noise and in my haste I banged my big toe, right foot again, against a chair. The noise turned out to be a cat who had climbed in through an open window and jumped onto the railing and then knocked a vessel. Stupid cat! I chased it away and outside the house and noticed that my toe was hurting pretty badly. I went back to sleep and by morning was unable to put pressure on my toe. I went to the hospital, got my foot x-rayed and was informed that I had a little fracture on my big toe. 1 week rest and then a check to see if I could go back to work after that. Damn! I called my boss and informed her that I needed a leave very badly. Only one problem!

My folks had to go to Trivandrum for my cousin’s wedding and were staying at my aunt’s house. And we had my sister’s puppy, Shawny Junior, who I also needed to take care off. Luckily for me mom’s brother & his wife who we lived two doors away from for a few years, were not going and hence my food and puppy’s food were taken care off. The only thing is – have you tried pleasing a puppy’s playful needs when you have a fracture? I would hobble to lock the gate & night so I could let her run free and open the gate in the morning once I put her back on her leash. She was very easy though and I could feed her and pet her and she’d be happy and didn’t cause me much trouble as I recovered. After a week, my folks came back home and I went to the hospital for another x-ray and was told that I could go back to work but couldn’t wear shoes for an additional 15 days until I fully recovered.

The Litigators – John Grisham

The Litigators is John Grisham’s 25th book and one of his best. And that’s saying quite a lot as he has lots of page turners and some real classics. The master author makes this a David vs Goliath legal novel (and coincidentally  as the lead character’s name is David) an interesting read and you will find yourself unable to put the book down as you root for the underdogs.

David Zinc leaves a high pressure job in one of the biggest law firm in Chicago and the nation having had enough of the place after 5 years. The 31 year old leaves the office building without warning one morning and heads straight to a bar where he proceeds to drink his first day of freedom away. He somehow manages to find a small  two-partner & two member law firm, Figg & Finley of the ham & egg, ambulance chasing variety. David promises to pull in some business and joins them as an associate. Oscar Finley and Wally Figg are two different type of lawyers; as Figg mops and moans through the day, wishing he could divorce his wife of 30 years, a 4 time divorced and recovering alcoholic Wally dreams of the cash cow.

Wally’s various schemes have never brought in the high payoff case but he seems to have found one in Krayoxx, a drug that lowers cholesterol and manufactured by pharmaceutical giants Varrick Labs. Hoping to hitch a ride on a mass tort case done by much bigger firms, Wally convinces Oscar & David that they need to round up clients in Chicago. At first the case seems to be a simple opportunity to sign up patients who took the extremely popular cholesterol reduction drug, Krayoxx, which was the number one prescription for obese patients. Wally finds 8 death cases of heart attack victims who used to take Krayoxx. Convinced that the drug is responsible, Wally signs up the 8 including the first case and joins mass tort lawyer Jerry Alisandros and his firm.

Varrick hires David’s former employers Rogan Rothberg who assign the case to Nadine Karros, a legal ace who has never lost a case in her career. As the trial date approaches, Wally’s dreams of milking in the big bucks vanish when Alisandros backs out as reports of the drug being quite safe come out. However the judge wants the first case to be tried and the trio of Figg, Finley with David go to court. However Figg suffers a heart attack on day 1 and needs surgery leaving Wally as lead counsel. In 3 days the pressures of trying a losing case gets the better of Wally and he starts drinking and disappears on David. Now it falls on David to try the case and he does a fine job on the final day, creating dents in the armour of Varrick but the jury finds the pharma giants not guilty. Not that David or anyone else expected them to rule in favour of the plaintiffs. The case is over and all future cases against Krayoxx are pulled. David helps Wally get to a rehab center as Oscar recovers from his surgery.

The secondary story is about David & his wife Helen finding a Burmese immigrant family whose son suffers from illness & brain damage after playing with a toy called Nasty Teeth – fake fangs. The paint chips in the fangs and he ingests the lead used to manufacture it, which causes the damages. David uses some of his own money to help the family and finally traces the company that now owns the toy makers and represents the boy’s parents. He settled the lead poisoning product liability case for $6.5 million, including $1.5 million in legal fees, which he uses to pay off the firm’s debts and include a bonus for their secretary. The rest is split between the 3 lawyers. He attempted to become equal partners as Finley, Figg & Zinc. The partnership did not work out as 63 year old Oscar retires and Wally is unwilling to try big cases and was dissolved after twelve months. Zinc opened his own product liability practice, David E. Zinc, Attorney-at-Law.

Sheldon is overwhelmed since he now possesses his DNA and can grow his own Leonard Nimoy and responds by giving Penny many gift baskets and then a rare “Sheldon” hug (“look Leonard Sheldon is hugging me). Halloween 2

Two years after he rebooted the Halloween franchise with his 2007 movie, Rob Zombie brought out the sequel to it in Halloween 2. Once again Zombie directed, wrote & co-produced this movie starring the returning actors Tyler Man as Michael Myers, Malcolm McDowell, Scout-Taylor Thomas, Sherri-Moon Zombie, Brad Dourif & Danielle Harris who are joined by Margot Kidder in a small role as a psychiatrist.

As the movie starts, we have a flashback to Myer’s mother Deborah visiting a young Mike at the sanitarium and gifting him a white horse statuette. Michael says that the horse reminds him of a dream he had of Deborah’s ghost, all dressed in white and leading a horse down the sanitarium halls toward Michael, telling him she was going to bring him home. We are then brought back to 15 yeas, just after the end of the first movie when Sheriff Brackette finds a dazed and bloodied Laurie walking on the road. He takes her to a hospital. Dr. Loomis & Annie are also both still alive although barely and are taken to the same hospital. A year later, just before Halloween, Laurie dreams that Michael, still alive, had found his way to the hospital and killed the nurses and hunted her down as she runs to a police guard’s cabin. She wakes up just as Michael catches up to her in her dream.

Laurie is now living with Annie & Sherriff Brackett’s house. Michael’s body has been missing since last Halloween—still presumed dead—and Laurie has been having recurring nightmares about the event. As a result she is undergoing therapy and sees a psychiatrist regularly. Meanwhile Dr. Loomis, having recovered from his injuries, has released a new book and is enjoying huge success. Michael meanwhile went off to recuperate and recover on his own and starts having visions of Deborah’s ghost and a younger version of himself, who instructs him that with Halloween approaching it is time to bring Laurie home; so he sets off for Haddonfield. Laurie too begins to have disturbing hallucinations that mirror Michael’s, which involve a ghostly image of Deborah and a young Michael in a clown mask. Loomis meanwhile gets criticized for profiting from a tragedy and some people blame him for Michael’s actions and for exploiting the deaths of Michael’s victims.

Laurie finally discovers the truth of herself – that she is actually Angel Meyers, Michael’s long lost sister. She throws a major tantrum when she meets up with Annie at home and leaves to go to a party with her friends. Michael appears at the party and kills Laurie’s friend Harley who was making out with a boy then makes his way over to the Brackett house and stabs Annie repeatedly. Laurie & another friend Maya find Annie bloodied and dying and Maya also becomes a victim of Mike. Laurie runs away from the house and gets into a passing car but Michael kills the driver, flips the car and then carries an unconscious & injured Laurie to an abandoned shed. Laurie awakens to a vision of Deborah, and a young Michael, ordering her to say “I love you, mommy”. With help from a witness, Brackett and the police arrive at the shed followed by Loomis who overhears the radio report. At the shed Loomis and tries to reason with Michael, who on being told by the vision of his mother that it was “time to go home” comes out and stabs Loomis dead.

Michael, now in the open, is shot twice by Sheriff Brackett and falls onto the ground. Laurie walks over and tells Michael she loves him, then she stabs him repeatedly in the chest and finally in the face. She too is accidentaly shot as she was wearing Michael’s mask but does not die as Brackett stops the shooting. The film ends with Laurie in isolation in a psychiatric ward, grinning as a vision of Deborah dressed in white stands with a white horse at the end of her room.

A lot more gorier & bloodier and violent than the 2007 movie, this one is overkill. I found myself disappointed as I really liked the first one. Loomis’s character goes through a change as he is portrayed as a sellout, profitting from Michael’s case and becoming something of a diva. I found McDowell great once again but Scout-Taylor goes overboard and I couldn’t find her convincing in her portrayal of Laurie going berserk! 6 outta 10!

Meeting Anil After Almost 2 Months

Anil and I had met together for a long time, almost 2 months which is strange for us. We’ve been trying to meet up several Saturdays but something or the other always came in between. Today we put an end to it. He said that we would meet for a late lunch and I agreed and we decided to meet up at Volga bar & restaurant post 2:30pm.

I reached the place a little earlier and chose a table in the very dark bar (why the fuck do they do that?) and needed the light from my phone to read the menu. Just before Anil reached the bar I ordered a couple of vodkas + 7up for me and 2 brandys + soda for him.

We had some Chicken spring rolls that were quite delicious and light yet filling as we sipped our drinks and Anil had some garlic prawns while caught up. We even called up Madhu (for those just tuning in, Madhu is the 3rd member of our little rock band aka friendship gang) who just got promoted in the business he works for in Qatar. Yes rock band – I’ve compared the 3 of us to Rush & Nirvana and in non band related terms, I’ve also compared us to the 3 Musketeers and the holy trio of Kirk (me), Spock (Anil) & McCoy (Madhu).

We wound up our lunch with some fried rice and chilli chicken and then made our way to Kaloor where we had some ice cream. I had the chocolate one on the left, he had the strawberry one. Post that I came back home to crash on the bed at 6pm and watch some Big Bang Theory while he went back home to Thrissur.

The Last Difficult “Goodbye” You Said

The last most difficult goodbye I said is still the one I said at my former office of employment in Kalamassery. I don’t miss the company or their corporate structure or the upper management or their hypocritical behaviour. I miss my old teammembers and some of the other colleagues. We had a good working atmosphere that was not because of the company’s involvement but rather despite it! I still miss a lot of those guys & gals and I wish I could spend more time with them or if we could all work in the same organization some time again.

My team, which once was as large as 10 plus me, was 6 plus me by the time I left. And that’s because when a couple of people left the organization for better opportunities & in one case due to marriage, cost cutting at the firm meant that I couldn’t replace them yet the organization wanted the same work + a whole pile of shit more stuff to be done with lesser people. And – wait for it – they feign ignorance & selective amnesia when it comes to proper remuneration. I have seen first hand how the organization cheats employees of due raised and benefits just so that pampered asshole VPs, GMS & DGMs can still get company sponsored stays in the finest hotels, eat expensive meals, travel to and fro in the latest cars as taxis and only travel first class by airplane. I’ve seen them do meetings/discussion on how to cut costs – not by sitting in the office board room and ordering food from the cafeteria, oh no not them! Instead, they get a couple of taxis, hire a small hall in a 3 star hotel with all amenities, snacks, drinks and then a big buffet lunch!

I miss the real people in my office. I miss the morning coffee banter. I miss the gossip at lunch and evening tea. I miss the little games we played. I miss the jokes and ribbing we do in good fun. I miss the team spirit and the happiness at achieving something within the team and outside. I miss planning outings with the team for lunch. I miss the natural camaraderie we had. I miss going for pizza on the way home or stopping for coffee. I miss the people. Damn I miss them! My farewell party, was very touching for me, tears in my eyes and tears in the eyes of members of my team, a lot of surprise at what people said in way of praise about me and the gifts I got. I remember being so lost & lonely that evening when I came back home.

What New Hobby Would You Like To Try Out?

Origami – this is something I just admire and would love to be able to master. Such designs with just paper. It looks really cool to do and anyone could learn it if you had the right person teaching you I guess.

Learning to play the guitar – so my biggest regret was quitting guitar classes age 12. And my dream of being the greatest guitar god that ever lived remains a pipe dream. I would love to play guitar with the finesse of the masters. Even just acoustic guitar. Ooo Flamenco guitar is so cool and it’s hard but amazingly catchy.

Drawing & painting – yeah if I only had the discipline to stick with it. I used to draw quite a bit when I was a child till about the age of 14 – all my people had the same faces. I never took any lessons just picked up a pencil and drew. I would love to paint, I hear that it can have a very calming effect on you. Wait – then why do the artists have such tumultuous lives and why are they always shown to be a little insane?

Cooking – more than just a hobby I would like to put this to good use. I wish I could cook for myself some proper meals other than just sandwiches, veggie wraps, eggs or instant noodles! I would love to experiment with food and try out different recipes.

Astronomy – this is one I would like to  take up and I hope to buy a really nice & powerful telescope later in the year. Hopefully I will also see the first aliens landing on earth!

Euro 2012 Group Stage Lineups

I hope I can watch some of the Euro2012 if I can manage to get it on tv here. Looks interesting. Group A looks the most weakest group but I hope the Czechs and the Greeks can both qualify with ease. Group B looks the toughest with Portugal, Denmark, Germany & Holland. I support Holland in all international competitions as Indian football is ……………….. (we’ll just leave it at that) but Germany looks the strongest among all the teams going into the tournament. Portugal is always entertaining but I think the squad is much weaker than a few years ago.

Group C should be easy enough for Spain & Italy and the clash between those two nations should be one to watch. Group D will be the second toughest with England, Sweden, France & Ukraine – oh will England qualify? Things should be interesting. Damn I hope I can see some games live.
