Shatner Aka Captain Kirk Get’s Waxed

William Shatner appeared at Madame Tussauds on the 4th of November to unveil his wax likeness. As reported by TrekToday several days ago, Shatner was immortalized in wax as Captain Kirk.

Shatner pushed a button on a control and Captain Kirk from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan was revealed, standing next to his white command chair and wearing the red uniform top and black trousers that the Star Trek crew wore in The Wrath of Khan.

“Oh my goodness!” exclaimed Shatner, who then went and stood next to the figure. “You know there’s wax in his ears,” he joked.

Star Trek : TOS Women

I’ve been enjoying watching downloaded episodes of the original Star Trek series or TOS. One of the things that I have noted, and this is not the first time that I have noted this, is that they seemed to be no dearth of hot women in the show.

Also, it seems to me that women in the 60’s just seemed to be more sexier than the ones in the decades since! I dunno why that is but I know that I’m not the only one who feels like that. Or put it this way, the ratio of sexy women seemed to be much higher back then. And Star Trek was no slough is showing us the hotness.

Case in point is Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, played by the delicious looking Sally Kellerman, in the pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before. Sally is more famous for playing Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the movie M*A*S*H. Another movie of hers that I love is Back To School. She was about 28/29 when the Star Trek pilot was filmed and she is absolutely beautiful & sexy here. And she is just one such example.

Yeoman Tankris

I’ve recently been downloading and watching episodes of Star Trek : The Original Series. Although I had only recently completed my collection of all 10 Trek movies made (pre 2009’s Star Trek with the alternative reality), I haven’t watched any original cast series episodes since I was a kid.

While going through the episode the Star Trek wiki website, Memory Alpha, I was checking out the list of talented actors & actressess that had done guest/recurring roles in TOS. and finding surprising & familiar faces. Like this actress who played Yeoman Tankris, who appeared as an operations division clerk who recorded the trial of Montgomery Scott after he alledgedly murdered three women.

I didn’t recognize the name but the face was familiar. Even though here in 1967 she is a fashionable & sexy young woman of just 23! This is actress Judith McConnell, aged 65, best known for her role as “Sophia Capwell” on the TV series Santa Barbara, on which she appeared from 1984 to 1993. For a soap opera, this was a series that my sister Sherine, cousin Raakhee and I used to watch & enjoy regularly for some witty dialogue and good characters for a couple of years.

Judith is a former Miss Pennsylvania 1965, and competed in the 1966 Miss America pageant. She has acted mostly in soaps like General Hospital, Another World, As The World Turns & One Life To Live. She has also done guest roles in some tv series like Baywatch Nights & JAG. I haven’t seen anything that she’s been in since the mid-90s.

Why Don’t You Trek Yourself?

Atom Originals have spoofed the new Star Trek movie by making a trailer of the flick as if it were an 80s high school movie! This is really cool. Spock is a science nerd, Uhurua is a cheerleader and they even incorporated Khan as the villain of the peice. The school bullies are Klingons and they even add a comment on Sulu (well actually the actor George Takei) being gay!

Star Trek or Star Trek IX

I have never waited so long or this eagerly for a movie to be released and for me to watch it. The movie turned out to be good but not as good as I thought it would be. It’s too much stuff in one movie for it to be considered great.

Let’s get one thing straight; the storyline was created to give the movie makers freedom to give the franchise & characters an alternate reality & not refer to the older stories. So is this the Star Trek that was not? Or is it Star Trek only in name? Let each fan decide!

  • The new design of the ship is cool – retro and yet futuristic.
  • Eric Bana’s Nero is the least complex and least convincing Trek movie villain.
  • Both Romulus & Vulcan destroyed? The nerve of the movie makers!
  • Zoe Saldana as Uhuru & Anton Yelchin as Chekov have done commendable jobs as the young (and alternative) versions of the legendary characters. And Zoe is hot!
  • Sulu is played as a ‘less sure of himself’ than the calm, serene and always in control version that we’ve come to know and love. Having said that, I thought that John Cho is a good choice.
  • Simon Pegg’s role comical but irritating at the same time. I wasn’t sure of him before and now I’m certain – he’s no Montgomery Scott!
  • I was surprised by the choice of Karl Urban as Bones McCoy. The new doc has taken a few lines from DeForest Kelly like ‘My god man! Are you insane?” It’s a bit eerie how he sounded just like Kelly!
  • Chris Pine is a poor man’s William Shatner. I didn’t like this guy at all for the choice of James T Kirk. There’s just a couple of scenes where I felt he exuded some form of charisma!
  • Give the casting some due credit – we’d better check and see if Zachary Quinto is infact actually the spawn of a human female & a Vulcan male. Damn good job as a ‘tortured’ Spock.
  • Speaking of whom, the original Spock, Leonard Nemoy is great in his role. I felt that he was necessary to make the movie feel as legimate as possible.
  • Best actor on the set – everyone please give a big round of applause for  character actor Bruce Greenwood as Captain Christopher Pike. Strong performance, which is somewhat aided by the fact that his character isn’t as popular or well known as the others. But still, kudos!

9 outta 10!

The Camera Print Copy Of Star Trek XI

A few weeks ago, I was able to locate and download a torrent file of the new Star Trek movie, which we fans will call Star Trek XI. Having waited impatiently ever since the movie was announced and then since May 8th, I really was anxious to watch this eagerly awaited movie.

However – once the download was completed, I saw that it was infact a very bad camera print of the movie which some boot-legger shot by smuggling a camera into a theatre. I was confused; I really wanted to watch this movie but should I base my feelings on such an important flick by watching a bad copy?

Since I couldn’t decide for myself, I left the choice to Twitter. I posted a comment depecting my dilema and asked for suggestions – bang! Everyone said not to watch it. And so I haven’t yet! It’s still lying in my hard disk but I haven’t watched it. Sigh! And there’s no hope of it coming to a theatre in Cochin.

Star Trek Inspires Real Life

In accordance with the center wanting to go in a new direction and work as a team (where have I heard that before)  to go to next level and excel in all our goals, it was suggested that leadership bond as one and even asked for suggestions for a team or group name.

all hat movie

Initially I hadn’t properly read the mail, as it also had a rather lame & old joke attached to it, and like the rest of the group had completely ignored the mail. A desperate plea to read the mail and participate followed on Saturday and I though “oh well, what’s the harm in replying!”

After much though I finally settled on a suggestion for a name to be bestowed onto the group as an entity. Dauntless! Team Dauntless to be precise. I had remembered the name as being that of the USS Dauntless, a fake ship that an alien created to try and trick the crew of the USS Voyager.

I’ll know in a day or two if the name is going to be selected but it looks like it was the only suggestion and so is sure to win. Once again, Star Trek inspires real life ;) manhattan breast augmentation

A Few Questions On The New Trek Movie

Warning : Please be aware that there might be spoilers if you haven’t watched the movie yet

  • Does cannon not get disrupted in this movie?
  • Does Kirk’s dad actually die in this manner, as depicted in the new movie, in the original storylines?
  • Didn’t Chekov join much later? He was the youngest of TOS crew to join in.
  • How can a cadet jump to Captain within a single voyage?

army of darkness dvd Keep in mind that I haven’t actually seen the movie. These comments are based on what I have read about the movie. I’m sure that there will be some oddities that will be apparent once I watch the movie. Pretty excited about it : most reviews have been more than flattering!

William Shatner Talks To Jian Ghomeshi

The original and the only true Captain James T Kirk, TJ Hooker & Denny Crane – 3 larger than life characters created by one man. William Shattner. Bill speaks to Jian Ghomeshi on the CBC radio talk show on the release of his latest autobiography. Great interview!

Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home

With this I have seen all 10 of the released Star Trek movies (and eagerly waiting for movie # 11). Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home is the most light hearted of the movies so far and it’s also the one where they’ve spent most time on Earth.

OK, so this is the 3rd and final installment of the trilogy of movies starting with Star Trek II : The Wrath Of Khan & begins 3 months after the events of Star Trek III : The Search For Spock. An unknown alien vessel, cylindrical in shape is headed towards earth, sending out an indecipherable signal and disabling the power of any vessel or station that it passes. The oceans begin to evaporate, causing severe weather conditions on earth. Meanwhile, exiled on Vulcan, our beloved crew decide to return to earth in the captured Klingon bird of prey and face punishment for stealing & then destroying the Enterprise.

The crew learn about the alien vessel; Spock is able to determine that it matches the song of humpback whales, long since extinct on Earth, and that the object will continue to wreak havoc on the planet until it can be answered. The crew devise a plan to slingshot around the Sun to time travel back to the late 20th century and return with a whale. They arrive in 1986 era San Francisco and split up for the following – to find a whale, find a device to hold the whale and and Uhura and Chekov to search for a nuclear power source to repair the dilithium crystals.

There’s some fun as Spock jumps in the water to communicate with the whales, George & Gracie, and stuns the aquarium scientist by revealing the fact that Gracie is pregnant. McCoy & Scotty arrange for a large plexiglass tank to be built, which Sulu hauls in through a helicopter. But the scientist, Dr. Taylor, learns about the crew from the future and agrees to help out but she insists on coming along in the spaceship. Chekov is injured & captured on a navy ship while trying to power the crystals using the nuclear device on it.  Dr. Taylor helps Kirk & McCoy get him out of the hospital.

Finally the crew with Dr. Taylor along for the ride go back to the 23rd century and release the whales in the San Fran bay. The whales answer the alien vessel’s signal and as a result, the vessel returns back to deep space while all power is restored on Earth. The crew are hailed as heroes but stand trial for disobeying orders. Kirk is demoted to the rank of a captain and given a new ship to command – the newly-christened USS Enterprise-NCC-1701-A, and depart on another mission with his crew.

There’s A Sequel In The Talks

download i know who killed me The movie isn’t released yet but there’a already talks of a sequel!! According to Variety Paramount Pictures has already greenlight a sequel to their upcoming new Star Trek movie (which TrekWeb will be calling Star Trek XII), and has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen the screenplay, for a likely summer 2011 release.

download man to man J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the latest chapter, is onboard to produce the follow-up alongside his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk. No decision has been made yet on whether Abrams will return behind the camera for the sequel. As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

May 8th Cannot Come Fast Enough

Whoa! Another trailer of the new Star Trek movie. Yeah, Whoa!

May 8th happens to be my one & only sister’s birthday. May 8th, 2009 also happens to be the release date of the new movie us Trekkies have all been eagerly waiting for Star Trek XI or just Star Trek as some put it. Is there a connection between the two?

I’ve long suspected that my sister was a Romulan government spy!

Star Trek: Are Humans The Biggest Villains Ever?

The Star Trek universe has given us a lot of wonderful thing, including the various alien races that look realistic & comical at the same time. From the Vulcans & the Kingons to the Borg & the Romulans. They are either friend or foe and there has been much debate as to who the greatest villians are. However the answer to that is probably man himself!

Think about it – the most dangerous situations have been involving a human villain. Khan Noonien Singh was a super human, in strength as well as in intellect. He almost proved to be the better in confrontations with the crew of the USS Enterprise – the first time was  in an episode of the Original series and then in Star Trek II.

Shinzon (whose likeness is shown in an artist’s work) from Star Trek X is another example. A clone of Captain Picard, created by the Romulans as a plan to infiltrate Star Fleet, Shinzon was later abandoned in the mines of Remus. Remans would take care of him and as he grows older he is filled with a hatred of Romulans and his quest to use Picard for his needs (he needs blood transfusions from Picard in order to survive). The Enterprise & Picard is almost destroyed.

april fool s day dvd And then there’s the living vessel in Star Trek I download hood of horror , which turns out to be a 20th century satellite, Voyager 6 or V’ger, lost in a black hole, found & given life by a race of living machines. V’ger obtains a vast amount of data in it’s travels and 300 years later it comes back to find it’s creator on Earth. In it’s wake it destroys a few Klingon ships and a Starfleet space station and poses a great threat to Earth.

download feast of love

Just like in real life, humans are the most destructive race we have encountered. I’m absolutely intrigued by current & future themes of Star Trek. I will be discussing the creation of the Borg (V’ger may or may not play a role in that) in the days to come.
