Dumpster Bin Sizes & Capacity

A dumpster is a type of movable waste container designed to be brought and taken away by a special collection vehicle, or to a bin that a specially designed garbage truck lifts, empties into its hopper, and lowers, on the spot. The word is a generic trademark of Dumpster, an American brand name for a specific design. The main purpose of a dumpster is to store garbage until it is emptied by a garbage truck and disposed of. Dumpsters can be used for all kinds of waste, or for recycling purposes. Most dumpsters are emptied weekly by a hired garbage removal service. Now what about dumpster bin weight capacity?

A 10 yard container typically holds 2 to 3 metric tonnes, or 1800 to 2700 kgs. 10 yard dumpster rentals are used when removing heavy material like concrete, bricks, and sand. A 20 yard dumpster container typically holds 3 metric tonnes, or 6,000 pounds. 20 yard dumpster rentals are perfect for seasonal yard cleanouts, small remodels, roofing projects, and decluttering. A 30 yard dumpster container typically holds 3 to 4.5 metric tonnes, or 7,000 to 10,000 pounds. 30 yard dumpster rentals are used for mid-sized cleanouts, light demolition debris, and whole-room remodels.

A 40 Yard container holds around 4.5 to 5.5 metric tonnes, or 10,000 to 12,000 pounds. 40 yard dumpster rentals are used for large renovations, major cleanouts, and construction projects. Weight limits for temporary dumpsters vary based on the type of debris you’re throwing out and the size of the container. 10 tons, or 20,000 pounds, is the max weight that the average dumpster truck can haul, but limits will often fall between 2-6 tons, or 4,000-12,000 pounds, to meet local road safety restrictions.
