Imagine waking up to a bedroom that is clean, clear and clutter-free. It seems pretty good, doesn’t it? There really is nothing better to set you up for the day than waking up in a pleasant environment. No dirty clothes draped over every available surface. No empty mugs or plates on the bedside table and no piles of junk to catch your eye.
When your bedroom is cluttered, for whatever reason be it a lack of motivation or no storage space or simply too much stuff, it can begin to affect our sleep. As we all know by now, a restful night’s sleep is essential for optimum physical and mental health.
Here, we share some tips to help you master the art of a clutter-free and organized bedroom, so that you can go to sleep and wake up in an environment that makes you happy.
Sort the storage
One of the biggest causes of clutter is a lack of storage, so if you get this sorted, you are more than halfway towards a neat and organized sleep space. First of all, take a look at your closet. Is it big enough? Custom closets can be more affordable than you think, so if this is an option, it could answer most, if not all of your storage problems. Have lots of space for hanging clothes, shelves and drawers for clothes that can be folded such as t-shirts and sweaters, and hooks on the inside of doors for things like ties and belts.
If you don’t have the budget or space for a closet, shelves with attractive baskets are your friend for storing accessories in. Fancy trays, bowls and dishes can go on your nightstand to hold your phone charger and jewellery and under the bed storage and vacuum bags can hold anything that you do not need to access regularly – out of season clothes, for example.
Spend a few minutes every day decluttering
To get this one nailed, you will have to do a boot camp, to begin with. Get rid of any unnecessary items using the Marie Kondo method – if it does not bring your joy or have any purpose, get rid of it responsibly. You could look at selling unwanted goods and using the money you make to upgrade your storage solutions!
Once you have boot camped, spend a few moments at the beginning or ending of each day getting rid of clutter and rubbish. Put any rubbish in the recycling or the bin, place dirty clothes in the laundry basket, hang up or fold up and put away any clean washing, put DVD’s back in their cases and generally spend a couple of minutes straightening everything out.
You may well find that if you decorate your room and give it a whole new lease of life that you feel more motivated towards keeping it decluttered and tidy. It doesn’t have to be anything too drastic – a fresh lick of paint in a new colour or new curtains can inspire you to sort the space out.
