I just found out that veteran British actor Simon MacCorkindale had passed away 3 days ago. He died at the age of 58 after a long struggle with cancer.
MacCorkindale was famous in the 1980s for his title role in the short-lived tv series Manimal. He played Dr. Johnathan Chase, a shape-shifting man who could take on the form of any animal (thus Manimal) and used his powers to solve police crimes. The series was canceled after only 8 episodes but it attained cult status.
After a career in theatre, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, MacCorkindale starred in a variety of films and serials, including Quatermass (1979), Death on the Nile (197,The Riddle of the Sands (1979), The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) and Jaws 3-D (1983 ). I remember that back in the early 1990s, my cousin and I went to watch The Sword and the Sorcerer which was being shown on the small theatre Little Shenoys. I remember that he recognized the actor from the series. He also had a long tenure in the popular soap opera Falcon Crest and spent six years on the British medical drama Casualty.
The actor died Thursday night surrounded by his family in a private Harley Street clinic. He had been diagnosed with bowel cancer four years ago, and it spread to his liver. His wife, the actress Susan George was with him at the time of his death.
