Songs Of Yesterday

What sort of music was played in your house when you were growing up? What effect, (if any) did it have on your musical tastes?

Uptill the age of 10-11 I mostly listened to whatever my older sister played on the stereo system and whatever Indian film songs (Hindi, Malayalam and some Tamil songs) were the hits of the 70s & 80s. We would buy VHS tapes of mixed Hindi or Malayalam songs from the movies. My sister meanwhile developed a taste for the music of Wham, Madonna, Culture Club, Stevie Wonder, Duran Duran, ABBA and Boney M among a few more. I listened to whatever she played for me and the only under music I listened to, that she didn’t, was Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. When I was 10 years old I discovered rock music via a chart program show on tv and Europe & Bon Jovi were the two bands that I liked a lot and bought their 1986 albums.

When my family moved back to India in 1987 11 year old me was exposed to the music of Scorpions, Van Halen, Dire Straits and the Beatles. For a year or more these bands were what I and my cousins listened to. By the time I turned 13 Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Metallica & Guns n’ Roses became favourites. I was big into the 80s hair metal too with Poison, Warrant, Whitesnake, White Lion etc. Age 15 – grunge hit me big time and especially Pearl Jam (who are my favs of all time), Alice in Chains and Nirvana. And somewhere in there – Rush, These bands are still my favorites and they will always be so.

Some songs from these artists bring happiness to me as well as twinges of pain as I remember the years gone by.
