June 1st – the first day of the new school year. Does that bring back memories or what? My two nephews go back to school today and my 2.5 year old niece is going to go to play school for the first time.
I went to 3 different schools – Carmel School, Kuwait (kindergarten to grade 4), Indian School, Kuwait (grade 5) and Hill Valley High School, Thrikkakara (grades 6-10) – but the first day was always the same feeling. Like the begining of a jail sentence. And being innocent of the crime!
Here in Kerala, the first day of school is also during the monsoon season and although it has rained quite a bit this year, the rains have seemingly stopped. This is a breach of tradition. It’s supposed to rain cats & dogs on the first day of June, like the heavens are protesting the fact that little kids are being forced back to classes and under the strict supervision of their teachers.
I remember one particular year, grade 9 I think, when the first day of school was called off as the school got flooded. The rains were so heavy and the water just collected (the school was at the bottom of a small hill) and people just couldn’t get into the rooms without wading through waist high muddy water. And hence, school got cancelled for 2 days! Sweet!
