Kick Off To 2008-09

The new English Premier League football season is upon us. I completely missed out on catching up on the latest news and fixtures. Not sure which players have moved on to different clubs. I will probably start getting into it in a few days, after watching the match on tv today. It was Newcastle United vs Manchester United. Both sides were missing some big name players, including Carlos Tevez & Michael Owen. It ended in a 1-1 draw but the match did have some good moments.

A goal by debutant Samir Nasri, formerly of Marseilles, gave a not-so-impressive Arsenal a 1-0 win over West Brom. That is not enough if we want a chance to win some silverware this season. I do not like the squad that we have; a quick glance at the current Gunners will let you know why! We are hopelessly low on big names and firepower. I hope that we get some stars by January.

Here’s hoping for an exciting season in 2008-09!

Power To The People

The state of Kerala depends on the Idukki dam & the rains for its electricity needs. The dam powers up the entire state and if the rains should fail then we are into deep shit. The rains started much earlier this year but then stopped all of a sudden and then came in little spurts. There was widespread panic in the region. Would the rains fail?

The rains came once again and it started pouring quite well but it was a bit late for us as far as avoiding scheduled power load shedding is concerned. Yes, we usually have scheduled power cuts every year around this time, while they wait for the reservoir to fill up. So it rains a lot and we have power cuts!! All together now…Brilliant!

This time its been as usual and even though the rains increased (and a couple of times it looked as if it wouldn’t stop) the power cuts have continued. What’s more, the motherfuckers in KSEB have also started unscheduled power cuts! Like today, on a Sunday! It went out for almost an hour in the morning and then at 6:20 pm it went out for 30 minutes. 15 minutes later at 7 pm it was our scheduled power cut. What a bummer!

Love Will Prove What Friends Are For

A blast from the past. Well, 15 years ago. I bought The Big Thrill by Axxis solely on the recommendation of a music store owner and never regretted it. Unfortunately, it was a cassette and after all these years it has worn out and I haven’t been able to find cds or mp3s of the band’s songs. I would especially want the songs from this pretty strong album, which I would list in my top 30 of all time. There aren’t any weak songs on the album. One of the best is this heavy ballad, Stay, Don’t Leave Me.

Axxis is a German hard rock & metal band, who first came to the forefront with their debut in 1989.

Cats @ Play

I was reading posts in Lady Banana’s blog and came across this one, with photos, about how she observed her neighbour’s cat playing with a mouse. It’s a cat & mouse game where the cat comes out as the winner. It brought back some memories of when I used to keep cats in the old house in Thrikkakara. I have had 8 cats in total, although the 6 that I had when I was 12 were just strays that we found when the mom had delivered them in a cartoon of old clothes, after she had sneaked in through an open window. We fed them for a week or so and then the mom came and took them all away.

When I was 13, my sister & I got two cats from our grandma’s place and we brought them home. A girl cat, all white and pretty with just a couple of brown spots & a boy cat, predominatly brown. The two would follow me around and spend the day in my room when I was at home from school and sleep in my bed until I kicked them out at night. The next morning, as soon as we opened the door, they would come back into my bed and snuggle in the blanket.

I think all wellfed cats won’t eat mice. They consider them beneth their dignity and turn a snobbish nose at the thought of using mice as food. My sister & I would feed our cats rice +curry and scrambled eggs!! Or fish!

Anyways, Lady Banana’s post reminded me of how my cats used to trap mice between themselves and bite them and hit them and poke them but never eat them. They played a weird game of tennis with a rat who, unfortunately, chose the wrong time to come out of hiding and fell smack right between the two felines. They played him for about 15 minutes after which they lost interest and the dying bugger had to be scooped up in a dust pan and thrown out.
