The Boys Are Back In Town

download deadwater online As expected, on a Saturday when I have something planned, I get delayed due to no fault of mine. I left the office at around 6:20 pm and took a bus to Marine Drive. Along the way I was hoping that things would be as normal and that spending time with my buddies would cheer me up. I got down at the stop and took an auto to Malabar House Rooftop garden where they were waiting for me.

Anil, Madhu and I wasted no time in ordering drinks and some snacks – mostly fish stuff, including some lovely squid plus my usual chilly gobi. We ate and drank and chatted loudly. Then the discussion got a little distracting – as religion always does. They both believe in a god (Madhu is a Hindu and Anil is a Christian) and I don’t. It went on for almost 90 minutes. Neither side was willing to give up and so it seemed wise to order a couple of more drinks and some soup.

After soup, we had chappati and butter chicken (which was delicious) and then got to the payment part. Once that was done, we got into an auto and they dropped me off first, as I live closer. Now I am in my room after visiting the bathroom and washing my face, legs and hands. My belly is full and I feel a little fuzzy due to the drinks – a plesant kind of dullness. I’m going to watch Friends for a bit from my bed until sleep hits me and then it’s zzzzz’s for 8 hours. Goodnite everyone!

Ode To The 2 Days Off From Work

I can’t wait for tomorrow evening. As a person among millions in India and, I’m sure, many other parts of Asia who has to work 6 days a week, a 2 day weekend is a luxury to be treasured. That’s why I look forward to 6 pm tomorrow when I plan to leave the office and I only have to be back to work on Tuesday. Since, ofcourse, the 26th of January (Monday) is Indian Republic day and we get an off from our deary work life.

So for a person who is as of yet still waiting for his promotion hike, yet working equivalent or more of the position he has been promoted to for soon to be 7 months, a few things like this make it easier to bear the usual mind-numbing pressure. It is something that I have been looking forward to since January 2nd when the official holiday list was published for the year in our company.

Hoping For A Few Drinks & Food With Friends

I’m excited about the chance of getting together with my buddies Anil & Madhu this Saturday. I haven’t seen them in a long while, 6 months or so, and I miss them both. Since Anil moved to Delhi, things have been quite on the friends front and Madhu and I have been promising to meet up once in a while but it just hasn’t taken place.

Mostly it is my fault. Things have been hectic at work but I should have made the time. It just didn’t pan out the way I wanted to. And I have been very lazy & tired on Sundays, preferring to stay in rather than go out and have some fun. It’s probably a mix of age and getting too stressed. And I have to admit that it’s been more hectic at the office lately.

So I look forward to this Saturday with some anticipation and hope that I can have 3-4 hours of drinking, eating & joking with my two best buds in the world. We have a great time together and it’s always the best when it’s us 3. I hope it goes according to plan.

As most of my regular readers will know by now, I love dogs. I’ve had three dogs live with me at various stages and for various amounts of time. I miss having a furry friend who greets you with a wagging tail & a lick everytime you come home. Since I can’t keep a dog in my apartment and will have to wait until I get a new place, I post pics of dogs that I find on the net.

  • I dunno if it’s a result of having been born (and raised for 11 years) in an Arab country, but my mouth waters as soon as I see dates (it also waters if I see women who I want to date)! I bought a packet of them this evening on my way home, just because I happened to see them.
  • Why would the new ‘Office Stationery + Gift Shop’, that opened near my apartment, be selling buckets? I have no idea.
  • Someone sent a mail that had images of ’80s Doordarshan (the state run national tv channel that only people without cable will watch now) as a nostalgic reminder to anyone who was in India during the 19080s? Anyone remember the old Mahabharata serial? Worse acting was never to be found.
  • It’s funny how the inauguration of the first ever African-American president (and a welcome relief, no doubt) has sparked off blog posts about Indians who should learn from it and settle differences of cultural & religious nature. Oh I’m all for it but it’s just funny!
  • I’m trying to change my ISP as they have been having an increase of technical & customer services glitches in the past few months. In the last 4 months, I have called them up more times that the previous 2 years!

    RIP Kahn Noonien Singh aka Ricardo Montalban

    I’m 6 days late and if I hadn’t been browsing Mike Boon’s blog I would have come to know about it even more later. Ricardo Montalban died on the 14th of January, 2009 – the first celebrity icon to pass away in the new year as far as I am concerned. He was 88 and he had a heart failure.

    Montalban was born in Mexico city to Spanish parents and first made a name for himself playing role in Spanish language movies in his homeland. He would later become famous, after his move to Hollywood, in the tv role Mr. Roarke in the television series Fantasy Island, which he played from 1978 until 1984.
    Another of his well-known roles was that of Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, in which he reprised a role that he had originated in the 1967 episode of Star Trek titled “Space Seed“.

    He also acted in two Planet Of The Apes movies and was the villian in the first Naked Gun movie as well as the role of the spy grandfather in Spy Kids 2 & 3. May he rest in peace!

    We Rushed To Get Home But….

    There was this old timer political leader who passed away today. Communist party or something (can’t you tell that I hate fucking politics). All them buggers coming to the city caused traffic jams and rerouting during the day. Several colleagues who work in the afternoon shifts were about an hour or so late coming in to work.

    It seems that there would be an event of some kind to commerate his death and the venus was too close to the office for comfort. Most shops in the area had closed down their shutters as (a) a mark of respect or (b) fearing for their lives & livelihood just in case some nutcase politicians decided to ransack their shops. I’m think 90% it was option b. We closed down our front shutters too.

    So by 6 pm a few of us were wondering if we would be able to make it home in time if we left at our usual pace. The event was supposed to begin after 6:30 pm and I usually leave the office after 7 pm. So my friend Kiran and I decided to jump the gun and go home early. We left the office at 6:20 pm and got a bus in about 10 minutes. Turns out that our fears were unwarranted! We reached homevery quickly as there were no traffic jams (other than the usual ones we see around town) and I reached home at around 7:15 pm.

    I didn’t know that they were continuing the Terminatorseries. This will come as a shock to most – there’s no Arnie in it!! It seems that he could not commit to the movie due to his duties as governor of California. It just ain’t the same. But there’s Christian Bale being chased by some awesome looking futuristic bikes.     So I finally got round to watching The Dark Knight download cocaine cowboys ii hustlin with the godmother , months after most of you have already seen it. Some, like my cousin Sujith, have watched it over 10-20 times. And they rave about it a whole lot.

    Well, there’s good reason to – it’s a very good film with some excellent performances from some very good actors. The special effects are to die for!

    Before I offer you my opinions of the movie, let me tell you that I usually don’t like rebooting of a tried & true series / franchise of movies / tv series. We’ve had lots of it lately and I think there’s a big difference in rebooting and making it too different from the original concept (that’s you – makers of the new Battlestar Galactica). But I think with the new approach to Batman in the latest two movies, Chrisopher Nolan has shown Batman closer to the actual concept and the graphic novels.

    Ok, here are my observation, opinions & comments:

    • The movie rocks, all the actors do wonderfully well but the whole movie is all about The Joker & the late Heath Ledger. The scene as a nurse, when he “corrupts” Harvey Dent, is fantastic.
    • Ledger’s “Why So Serious?” line will be remembered as one of the top 10 movie dialogues of all time.
    • Gary Oldman can play good guys too! :)
    • Is there any big movie without Morgan Freeman? And is there anyone more cooler at his age?
    • Eric Roberts does a fine job in his small role as does Michael Caine (the perfect “Alfred”) in his not so small role
    • Is that Michael Jai White in a tiny role? He was SPAWN! C’mon man! What the hell happened to his career?
    • I was surprised to see Keith Szarabajka in a tiny role in the film. Angel fans will remember him as Angel’s arch-nemesis “Holtz”.
    • The Batpod rocks dude!
    • Batman speaks in a rougher voice than Bruce Wayne – maybe the suit is too tight around the neck!!
    • Aaron Eckhart is awesome as Harvey “Two Face” Dent. He’s better than (gulp) Tommy Lee Jones! But did they have to kill him in the movie?
    • How are they ever going to top this?

    Garon Traded After Good Game

    I wonder how Mathieu Garon must feel right about the time when he heard the news. And how would you feel yourself? Goalie Garon had just been part of an Edmonton Oilers win against the Colorado Avalanche. He had a very strong period & a half about mid-way from the second and been chosen the second star of the game. Next thing he knows he has been traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins acquired the Chandler (Quebec) native goaltender in exchange for goaltender Dany Sabourin, forward Ryan Stone and a fourth round draft pick in the 2011 Entry Draft.

    Garon, 31, has appeared in 15 contests for Edmonton this season posting a 6-8-0 record, along with a 3.17 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.  The 6-2, 192-pound goaltender posted a 26-18-1 mark in 47 games with Edmonton last season.  He finished the 2007-08 season with a .913 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average winning the Oilers’ Molson Cup Award (most three star selections).

    Arsenal gained revenge along with a better showing since recent weeks to beat Hull City 3-1. It also extended their unbeaten run to eight games and avenged their shock loss to Hull at the Emirates Stadium in September. Hull had looked set to frustrate the Gunners for the second time this season when Daniel Cousin cancelled out Emmanuel Adebayor’s first-half opener after 65 minutes.

    But the KC Stadium visitors produced a strong finish and snatched victory with goals in the final nine minutes from Samir Nasri and substitute Nicklas Bendtner. It was the perfect response from the Gunners after wins earlier in the day from Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Arsenal stay in the 5th position.
