Espanyol’s Captain Dies At 26

Barcelona based Espanyol’s football club’s 26 year old captain Daniel Jarque died of heart failure while in his Florence (Italy) hotel room. The central defender was resting on the eve of his club’s exhibition game against Italian club side Bologna. Jarque played his entire career with RCD Espanyol, and died just a month after he was named team captain.

A product of RCD Espanyol’s youth system, Jarque made his first division debuts with hometown club during 2002–03 and, after 15 appearances in two seasons, went on to become a defensive mainstay for a Catalan side that won the 2006 Spanish Cup. He was found after teammates realised he had not turned up for a meal.
