Dad Falls & Gets A Cut

I was at the bank today afternoon just before 1pm and then went to get a haircut. I was almost back home when I got a call from my mother. Since I was on my way to the apartment, I cut the call and pressed the doorbell as soon as I reached home. Then mom dropped the news to me – my dad had fallen down while walking on his way home for lunch from his office and hit his head. As there was a cut & bleeding, an auto driver who my dad’s company occasionally calls for his service and some guy who worked in an office nearby, took my dad to the hospital nearby. Once he reached the hospital he asked the driver to come and get me.

I went with the auto driver to the hospital where my dad was in the Casualty ward and I had to wait for 30 minutes before I could see him. There was a nasty gash on his forehead, not too big but deep and he had to get 3 stitches on it. Also he had a cut just below his nose as well. What had happened was that on his way home¬† he was looking for a van to carry equipment and books for an event that the non-profit organization he works for is going to conduct tomorrow. So although he walks on that same road that’s just in front of the building we live in everyday he failed to be careful while walking on the big hole in the road that was hastily & badly covered up with some rocks, granite & tar by the stupid fucking road & transports workers as a fix-up. He hit his shoe against a rock that protruded out and fell. At the hospital I also called my sister and she came to see him as well. We paid for his medicines and stitched and brought him back home where he had a light lunch talked to my sister for a bit before she went back home and then took a long nap.

He is rested and feels better. He has to take medicines and rest more and in 2 days  has to go back for changing the dressing. Man was that a scare. I just hope he is more careful when he walks.

The Great Blue Hole

Part of the Lighthouse Reef System, The Great Blue Hole lies approximately 60 miles off the mainland out of Belize City. A large, almost perfectly circular hole approximately one quarter of a mile (0.4 km) across, it‚Äôs one of the most astounding dive sites to be found anywhere on earth. Inside this hole, the water is 480 feet (145 m) deep and it is the depth of water which gives the deep blue color that causes such structures throughout the world to be known as “blue holes.”

Coffee Drinker, How Many Do You Have In A Day?

I guess you could say that I am fueled by coffee. I think I started drinking coffee at the age of 13 or 14. I tried tea for a while but I just never liked the taste that much and to this day I prefer black tea to tea with milk. So coffee it was and has been to this day. I usually drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day. That is if it’s in my big cup. If in smaller paper cups then it can be 5 or 6. I remember that I had once had 7 big full cups of coffee in day – by night I was so wired and strung tight, like a violin, that I couldn’t sleep at all!

So yeah, waking up is just a rubbing my eyes, going into the bathroom, washing my face and brushing my teeth – all the things that are necessary hurdles before that first cup of coffee. I get that in my favourite big black cup and come to my room, fire up the laptop and sit in my chair. I place the cup on the desk, wait till I log into my email and take that first sip – ahh! That’s life force surging through me. It’s like a suffocating person being able to breath pure oxygen once again.

My first cup is always with milk. Later in the morning I will get a second cup, which will be stronger, sweeter and black. That’s the one that decides how energetic I will be for the rest of the day. This one is usually drunk a lot slower. In the evening I have two cups; once again the first one will be with milk and the second black. The second one is usually after 7pm and that’s also the usual time that I do the majority of my blogging and I need the extra fuel. 4 cups is enough. I don’t think I need more than that but I do need that first one in the morning to properly wake me up.

The River – Ep8 “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”

The season finale (and possible final episode cause we know that in this shitty era, good shows need not last very long before they get cut while shitty crappy stuff gets to last for 9-10 years) should always leave us wanting more. It should end in such a way that we can’t wait to get to the next part “What happens, what are they gonna do, how are they gonna get out of this? etc etc should be on the lips and minds of the viewers and followers of the show. For the most part,¬†The River‘s season one finale does do that job. If you were wondering how the show was going to continue on to a possible second season, then consider your questions answered. When I sat down to watch the episode last night, I was thinking “Ok, they’ve got Emmett Cole back and he is alive and well, so are they not just going to go on and leave the jungle area and go back home?” Hold your horses, they are not out of the fucking jungle.

So Emmett spends times with his wife in her bed, enjoying each other’s company, while everyone else talks about what they are going to do when they get back home. Clark feels he has enough for 8 really good episodes of the show (a pun intentionally on the real show) from all the footage and is eager to start working. When Emmett goes to the front of the Magus to speak with Lincoln someone sneaks into the captain’s cabin and shoots at Emmett with a shotgun. However Lincoln sees it just in time and pushes his dad aside only to get himself shot right through the throat. He bleeds out on the deck as Emmett screams for help and the people rushing in can only stand as Lincoln dies in front of them. The finger pointing soon starts and everyone looks at Kurt who denies it. Jahel later says that she knows how to bring him back. Every movie/tv series that deals with the supernatural needs Jahel – she is just an awesome source of information. Emmett refuses but a mother cannot bear to stand back and ignore a possible way for her son to be alive, so Tess takes Jahel into a hold below and the young girl speaks to Boiuna spirits she knows and does a ritual to bring Lincoln back alive – and he does come back!

Lincoln points the finger at Kurt and says that he saw the security expert shoot at him so he is hauled off to his room and locked in. Emilio tells Jahel that she shouldn’t have done it and seems a bit frightened of his daughter’s abilities. He tells that he is sending her to live with his sister in Montana where she is to continue her education but spunky Jahel steps up to daddy and tells him that she is staying put. Lincoln seems to have changed and his mannerisms seems different. While he is making a sandwich in the pantry, Jonas approaches him and they talk. Turns out it was Jonas who actually shot at Emmett, payback for leaving him to die in the jungle from the curse, and Lincoln just wanted Kurt out of the way. With one swift punch using some unnatural strength, Lincoln kills Jonas.

Lincoln is possessed by the spirit of the Bouina and a now freed Kurt lets on that he knows more about the demon spirit. With some help from Lena, Emmet manages to tie the possessed Lincoln down and attempts to extract the demon from within him. This part is creepy with Lincoln struggling and writhing away with and twisting his body, struggling to get free. He also speaks in a weird voice and taunts Emmett with family secrets and reveals the affair that Kurt has with his mom. His powers manages to push Lena to the ceiling of the boat and attempt to undress her. Yikes, this demon is kinky & horny! And creepy when Lincoln starts to sing Row your boat in a kids voice. Emmett tries to speak to the demon and make it leave Lincoln’s body but Kurt tells him that he will have better luck speaking to Lincoln as the demon can only be forced out by Lincoln himself. So his father starts pleading to his son, and cheesily enough, the demon is forced out by Lincoln’s will.

We see the form of the demon leave Lincoln and jump into the river and swim away. The family is united and the team settles down. They are about to reach the Boiuna area and on to civilization from where they will fly off to their respective hometowns. The crew just want to get away from there but they can’t find the spot where a helicopter is waiting for them at a village. However things don’t look to be where they should be. They use the mobile camera to fly up and they see that the river is changing along with the landscape, changing their path. The River is not letting them get away that easily!

Where will the story take us? What does the Boiuna have in store with the Magus crew and what does it plan to do with them? Will the show get a second season? I hope so.

The Ides Of March

I like political movies or more accurately, movies about the workings of politics and “politricks” and that is something that Hollywood does well. One such movie is The Ides Of March directed by¬†George Clooney from a script he also co-wrote. The movie stars Ryan Gosling, Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman,¬†Paul Giamatti,¬†Marisa Tomei,¬†Jeffrey Wright, and¬†Evan Rachel Wood. Heavyweights all and it shows in this movie. All the events of this film unroll during the last hectic days of a presidential primary election.

Stephen Myers is the junior campaign manager for Mike Morris, who is the Governor of Pennsylvania and and a¬†Democratic presidential candidate. He is competing against¬† Arkansas¬†Senator Ted Pullman and the campaign has headed to Ohio. Both the candidates are also looking to¬†¬†enlist the endorsement of¬†North Carolina¬†Democratic Senator Franklin Thompson – his 356 convention delegates, enough to clinch the Presidential race for either of them. After a debate Meyers is called by Pullman’s Campaign Manager Tom Duffy to meet him for a drink. Meyers tries to get Morris’s senior campaign manager (Meyer’s boss) Paul Zara to join him but the latter is unable to answer the phone. Meyers goes to the meeting alone, where Duffy¬†offers Meyers a position in Pullman’s campaign, an offer Meyers refuses.

Meanwhile Myers has started a sexual relationship with Molly an intern who works for the Morris campaign. Late one night he sees that Morris has been trying to call Molly on her cell phone. When he asks Molly about this, she finally confesses that she & Morris had a brief tryst during the campaign and that she is now pregnant with his baby. Meyers says that he will help her with money for the abortion and drives her to the clinic but forgets to pick her up later. He then goes to Zara  admits to Zara that he met with Duffy, who told Meyers that Pullman will offer Thompson the position of Secretary of State, guaranteeing his victory. Also Ida, a newspaper reporter, reveals that an anonymous source leaked his encounter with Duffy to her and that she will publish unless Meyers gives her all of the information about his meeting with Thompson. When he asks Zara for advice, Zara reveals that he is the one who leaked the details of the meeting to Ida and fires Meyers for what he perceives to be going behind his back and a lack of loyalty.

A stunned Meyers now finds him without a job and approaches Duffy for a job. Duffy refuses saying that he played Meyers and setup the meeting just to create discord in the Morris camp. And thus strengthen Pullman’s campaign. Before dismissing Meyers, Duffy encourages the younger man to quit the business before he becomes a cynic. Molly by now has returned to her hotel room and hears about Meyer’s firing and fearing that her secret will now be exposed, takes a fatal drug overdose. When Meyers sees her dead body he feels guilty as he had planned to leak the information of Molly’s affair with Morris to Duffy. Meyers goes on the offensive and meets with Thompson to arrange for Thompson’s delegates in exchange for a spot as Vice President on the Morris ticket. He then calls Morris using Molly’s cell phone and arranges a meeting.

Morris comes to meet Meyers in the dark and is confronted by the younger man. Meyers says that he found a suicide note in Molly’s room and that if Morris doesn’t agree to meet his demands, he plans to make the affair public. The demands are – ¬†fire Zara, place Meyers in charge of the campaign, and offer Thompson the Vice Presidential spot on the ticket. Both men go on a back & forth but Morris finally relents and fires Zara after speaking to him. At Molly’s funeral Zara compliments Meyers for achieving what he did. Morris loses the Ohio campaign but wins nominee race. He declares Thompson as his running mate and with Meyers guiding the campaign. As the movie ends a now hardened & bitter political player is shown in stark contrast to the almost naive & playful person he was shown to be at the start of the movie. He is then moved to a tv interview where he is asked to comment on the events leading up to the election race.

Everyone does a great job in the film. Gosling, Giamati, Clooney, Hoffman are excellent. A must watch if you like political dramas. 8 outta 10!

TMNT Reboot By Michael Bay

As a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies and animated cartoons – the whole franchise in total – I join in with my fellow fans, who number in the millions, in being outraged at what is being done to a beloved franchise. Cable channel¬†Nickelodeon¬†(a subsidiary of¬†Viacom) had purchased all of Mirage’s rights to the¬†Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles¬†property in 2009 and has roped in director/producer Michael Bay and his¬†Platinum Dunes¬†partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form on to produce the next film that reboots the film series.

First of all – another fucking reboot? How about just continuing with the established storyline for once and growing a pair of balls instead of wimping out and doing a reboot. And to add insult to injury, Michael fucking Bay? This guy is known for ripping beloved franchises and making crappy action movies out of them. He has made a mockery of Transformers that most long time fans won’t even watch beyond the first movie (he is coming up with a 4 in the series). He has rebooted beloved horror franchises and characters in Friday The 13th & A Nightmare On Elm Street – like all those movies that came before his doesn’t even matter. Oh and also The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (although I have seen neither the original nor the remakes). But the worst is what he has in store for the turtles!

He is reboot the series so much that their origins have changed from baby turtles who were exposed to a toxic chemical that was dumped into the sewers of NYC and became highly intelligent and humanoid like to aliens from another planet!!! Alien turtles and inter-dimensional beings! I shall let that sink in in case you haven’t heard about this till now.

Bay is promising fans an epic return-to-form for the sewer-dwelling masked heroes. Despite public fan outcry, Bay believes that the alien “Ninja Turtles” could inspire a whole new generation of kids to believe in Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael again. To address the almost unanimously expressed outrage on the detail for the new live-action film (set to be released next year) Bay said “”Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world.”

Really? Fuck you and shove a Transformer up your ass!

Lousy Customer Care Service by TATA Indicom

Late yesterday afternoon my internet connection was disrupted. Turns out that a goods lorry (a large truck to transport goods) had driven straight into one of the posts where my ISP’s cable is connected and the cable broke off as a result. Sadly this is not the first time that it has happened. We have such irresponsible truck drivers in India that they don’t bother about things like this – “our stuff has to reached on time, so we can be paid. Fuck everybody else” seems to be the drivers’ union motto!¬† I noticed that my connection was down at 5pm but I cannot complain to to my ISP TATA Indicom as THEIR CALL CENTER CUSTOMER CARE HELPLINE HAS NOT BEEN WORKING FOR THE PAST 5-6 DAYS!!!

Of all the fucking stupid things! Their service had been down on occasion during the last few days and each time I tried to call their customer care number but the call won’t get through. I have heard from others on Twitter that they are also facing the same problem for all the numbers that TATA has been down. Now, TATA has got the broadband service, a USB device called Photo and they are also a mobile service provider. I don’t know about their mobile service helpline but the other two has been down for 5 days by my account and 6 by some others. This is pathetic! To register a complaint I had to call my cousin and have him email them on my behalf. I also called a rather helpful payment collection executive of TATA Indicom who registered a complaint on my behalf and also conferenced me with their local technical staff and finally my problem was fixed, 24 hours later.

It seems that TATA Indicom have decided that customer concerns are not at all their concern. They are not providing a contact point over the phone and they haven’t still bothered to reply to the email my cousin sent. Shameless!

Parents Do Not Aprove Of Hot Teacher

Oh Italy, Italy! Why you protest so much, I shall never know.

Furious parents have pulled their children out of an Italian nursery school after it emerged that one of the teachers posed for glamour calendars as part of her extra curricular activities. Brunette Michela Roth, 38, sparked fury among mothers at the school but – unsurprisingly – not fathers, after news leaked out that she had posed in sexy see through underwear. American born Miss Roth, who has lived in Italy for more than ten years, has also won several beauty contests including ‘Miss Mamma Italiana’ and ‘Miss Cultetto D’Oro’ (Miss Golden Bottom) and has been the talks of TV chat shows and newspapers since the story broke. Miss Roth, is a teacher at Castello di Serravalle near Bologna and today was not at all fazed at the fact parents has pulled their children out of the nursery.

She said: ‘For me being a model is my second job. I do shoots when school is over and especially in the holidays when I am back in the United States. I am always dressed in the pictures and never naked. ‘Maybe I could have been a model but I just love being a teacher. I think there is a little bit of envy going on here and it has gone over the top – there are also mums who tell me that their children can’t wait to see me in the morning.’ Miss Roth found herself in the spotlight after posing for a Harley Davidson calendar and after news leaked out furious parents began pulling their children out of the school with one telling the local newspaper: ‘She is too attractive and I don’t want her teaching my son.’

Here she is! I would have thought that she would a reason for keeping kids, most boys and some girls, in school until they graduate! I would certainly not miss a single class, even if I was sick! I’ve had a couple of teachers who were really hot with amazing bodies and they were always my favourites! Ofcourse they never dressed in lingerie and posed (except in my mind & dreams)!

Silent Hill

Silent Hill is based on the survival horror series of video games of the same name. Directed by Christophe Gans, the movie came out in 2006 and stars Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Sean Bean, Alice Kriege & Jodelle Ferland who plays the young girl. Deborah Kara Unger & Kim Coates have small roles as well. The film, particularly its emotional, religious and aesthetic content as well as its creature design, includes elements from Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2 and 3.

Rose & Christopher Da Silva have an adopted young daughter Sharon who has recently been experience nightmares and sleep walking. She keeps saying Silent Hill during her dreams. A concerned Rose decides to take Sharon on a road trip to see the deserted ghost town of Silent Hill, without informing her husband. On their way there, she draws the suspicions of motorcycle cop Cybil Bennet who decides to follow them. On her way into town Rose sees a young child in front of her car and swerves to avoid her. She is knocked out unconscious and when she comes to  Sharon is missing, and fog and falling ash blanket the town.

Silent Hill is a ghost town, the victim of out-of-control coal fires that are still burning beneath the streets. Rose runs into town searching for her daughter but finds some weird looking horrific monsters instead. She also meets a woman named Dahlia Gillespie who speaks of terrible things done to her own daughter, Alessa, by the townspeople and claims that Sharon is Alessa. Rose returns to her car and runs into Cybil, who arrests her. While trying to take her out of town, Cybil finds that the road has been destroyed, with a huge hole in front of them and that there is no way to get out of the town. Cybil & Rose team up to find Sharon and also a way out of the town.

They then meet a woman, Anna, who leads them to a church but she is killed by a pyramid headed monsters just outside. In the church, Rose and Cybil discover a cult, headed by a woman named Christabella (Alice Krige). Christabella tells Rose about a demon, who knows where Sharon is. Christabella is persuaded by Rose to take them to the place where the demon is, the town hospital, but as soon as the she finds out the similarity between Sharon & Alessa when she sees a photo, the cult leader declares the two women to be witches and her men attack them. Cybil allows herself to be captured by the townspeople in order for Rose to escape and descend into the hospital basement. There, Rose encounters the burned Alessa in a hospital bed and a being in the form of a girl who strongly resembles Sharon. Rose is then shown the town history and how it was burned.

30 years ago, the town under the leadership of the cult believed in witches and burning them at the stake. ¬†Alessa was stigmatized for having been born out of wedlock by an unknown father; her schoolmates bullied her, while the adults made no effort to protect her. It is also implied that Alessa was molested by the school janitor. The cult trick Dahlia to believing that they are going to cleanse her daughter but instead burn her in a ritualistic fashion but a bigger fire breaks out. When Dahlia returned with the police, Alessa was seriously burned, but alive. While in the hospital, Alessa’s pain and rage caused her “dark” side to manifest in the form of a duplicate of herself, who refers to itself as the darkness inside Alessa. Alessa’s anger engulfed the entire town into a world of dark dreams and monsters, which is what actually happened to the town. Rose learns that Sharon is the manifestation of Alessa’s remaining innocence and goodness. After the flashback, Rose is told that she must aid Alessa in her revenge by granting her entry into the church and that Christabella will soon find the real Sharon and attempt to burn her as well.

When Rose returns to the church, she finds Cybil burned to death with Sharon next on the agenda. She confronts Christabella with the truth and tell the cult members to stop the madness but she is stabbed and when her blood drops on her the floor, it allows the portal to be opened for Alessa to enter. proceeds to kill Christabella and the townspeople, leaving Dahlia, Rose, and Sharon the only survivors. Rose takes Sharon and goes to her car which now starts and drives out on the road which has appeared whole again. However once they reach home they find that they are still in this other dark world that Alessa had created. Christopher is home in a nice clean hose but Rose & Sharon are in the same room only they cannot see him and they see decay and ash falling all over town.

Weird little film with some scares and really good creatures. Yet it fails to fascinate you and the story falters. 7 outta 10!

KSEB & TATA Indicom Fuck Up Sunday

What a lousy Sunday it has been! Woke up at 8am and not wanting to get out of bed even to open the windows as it was quite hot and I could have used some fresh air. I lazed in bed for another hour when the power went out. Great! Not a good start to the day eh? It was now getting really hot and sweaty. I managed to get myself into the bathroom to wash myself and brush my teeth. Coffee & breakfast (rice cakes & lentil curry) was eaten slowly and took almost an hour, sitting at the laptop playing music and reading the Sunday newspaper & supplement took another hour. Now what?

Oh the power is back on but my ISP has not found that out – no internet! No problem, I thought I’d play some more songs till 12pm. At noon I tried to watch a Criminal Minds season 6 episode when the power went out again. I lay in bed again for 30 minutes when the power came back again. An hour later it went out again and came back in 20 minutes. The Kerala State Electricity Board does have a sense of humour – perverted and fucked up though it might be! Post lunch I was watching another episode and then was going to watch a movie but the power goes out again. It comes back in about 20 minutes only to go out 30 minutes later and this time the power outage lasts 90 minutes. If I had a gun, KSEB would be hiring entirely new personnel on Monday!

But I didn’t get internet connectivity for a long time today. And guess what? My ISP, the great Tata Indicom Broadband, seemingly has a new policy. They won’t run a call center / customer helpline. They’re customer care helpline number has been down for a couple of days and I’ve been facing internet outages during these last 3 days. So, if you service is down, you won’t answer customer’s complaint calls either? What a wonderful idea jackasses!!

Cyber Bullying & Hate Crime Case

Usually hearing about Indians or Indian origin people doing well in western countries makes me feel a bit envious for so & so being able to live and enjoy their lives in say the UK, Canada or the US. When they do well, you are happy for them. Most of the stories are positive ones and it does give you an ethnically charged sense of pride. And for the ones in showzbiz as well – you know like finding about Frieda Pinto or that Indian guy in The Big Bang Theory or Kal Penn’s latest film or Russell Peters latest comedy special.

Dharun Ravi’s case is not one of the above. Dharun, a former Rutgers University student and resident of New Jersey, was convicted on Friday on all 15 charges he had faced for using a webcam to spy on his roommate having sex with another man, a verdict poised to broaden the definition of hate crimes in an era when laws have not kept up with evolving technology. In September 2010, a then 18 year old Dharun had used his webcam to stream a video of his roommate Tyler Clementi & an older man kiss briefly in the room, along with another student. He then sent out Twitter and text messages about them. Clementi posted online that he had asked the resident assistant for a new room after having learned about the first incident and then discovering that Ravi invited his Twitter followers to watch a second sexual encounter. Clementi wrote to a friend online that he was not really bothered by what Ravi had seen in the first, brief viewing – primarily due to its extreme brevity and accidental nature – but found Ravi’s intent to view the second rendezvous as “wildly inappropriate”.

On September 22 2010 Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson river. His body was found the next day by police. On April 20, 2011, a Middlesex County grand jury indicted Ravi on 15 counts, including bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, witness tampering, and evidence tampering. he witness tampering charges are based upon text messages Ravi sent to Wei, trying to get her not to contradict what he had told police. In December 2011, Ravi rejected a plea agreement in which he would not spend any time in jail and through which the Prosecutor’s office would assist him in fighting any potential deportation orders. Ravi is a citizen of India legally living in the United States. In rejecting the plea arrangement, Ravi’s lawyer stated: “Simple answer, simple principle…He‚Äôs innocent. He‚Äôs not guilty. That‚Äôs why he rejected the plea.”

A tentative sentencing date has been set for May 21 and as a result of his convictions he could be deported back to India. He plans to appeal the convictions.

What do you think about this, termed as cyber bullying and a hate crime? And think of Tyler and his family and what they had to go through.

As I See The Ad In Print

This is a print ad for Hindware’s Italian Collection line of bathroom fittings. As the ads says, Inspired by the best in Italian art and design, this collection recreates the magic of finely crafted Italian bathrooms. This is a paper print ad which I had seen usually on the back of my Reader’s Digest copies. I don’t buy other magazines and so I don’t know which all mags this ad would appear in.

The bathroom looks good. If I had money and wanted to either refit or am buying a new apartment being constructed, I’d do for these kinds of fittings. Lovely shower with a state of the art shower system, sink, commode and marble looks gorgeous. I don’t see a bathtub but I’m guessing that it’s as artistically gorgeous as the rest. I have seen it a few times and each time my thoughts are not exactly on the bathroom & fittings. It’s on the woman in the center.

She’s attractive and looks to have a nice body. That hot pink top and whatever kind of sarong she has tied around her waste is not unflattering to say the least. Nice belly, long legs which lets you get an eyeful as she jumps and the cloth is hiked up and blown up just about enough to get show some flesh to entice me. That’s the first impression but my brain is not wired to stop at there. It goes on!

What the heck is she doing skipping rope in the bathroom? And with that insanely crazy expression on her face! Mouth open like that gives her an almost dumb & stupid expression! All I can think later is what if the tiles are a little wet and/or slippery and she slips while she’s on one foot? Next I imagine that she does and falls on her ass with a big thud! What if she hits her head on the tile or on the sink as she falls down? What if she hurts herself really badly? Or she falls in a real comical fashion? Will she need help? Doesn’t she know that she should probably do that in her bedroom or in another room?

I just can’t help picturing the different scenarios in my mind. Here’s a close up of the image on the back on this month’s Reader’s Digest. Sorry that it’s so blurry.

Beer Types – Red Ale

Irish red ale, red ale, or Irish ale is a name used by brewers in Ireland. A smooth malty beer with a rich red colour and a hoppy, fruity palate. The color can be anything from red to brown to deep reddish copper or some variation in between. The red color comes from the use of small amounts of dark or roasted grains. These are malty brews with a moderate to heavy mouthfeel and often present a rich, caramel flavor throughout. In the United States, the name can describe a darker amber ale or a “red” beer that is a¬†lager¬†with caramel colouring. The basic Red Ale tends not to focus on a big hop presence and keeps the IBU‚Äôs down even lower than a basic Pale Ale.

The flavour will be quite clean, low to moderate malt aroma, generally caramel-like but occasionally toasty or toffee-like in nature. May have a light buttery character (although this is not required). Hop aroma is low to none (usually not present). May contain some adjuncts (corn, rice, or sugar), although excessive adjunct use will harm the character of the beer. Generally has a bit of roasted barley to provide reddish color and dry roasted finish. UK/Irish malts, hops, yeast. Medium-light to medium body, although examples containing low levels of diacetyl may have a slightly slick mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation. Smooth. Moderately attenuated (more so than Scottish ales). May have a slight alcohol warmth in stronger versions.

The main variation in Irish Red Ale is in the alcoholic strength; domestic Irish versions tend to be lower in alcohol, approximately 3.5-4% ABV, while “export” versions can be up to 6%. However, some examples, notably Murphy’s Irish Red, can also be brewed as lagers. Lager versions should not have too much of a lager character but will necessarily be somewhat different from the ale-brewed versions.

City Choices

If you had to live in a large city for a year, which would you pick?

It’s pretty obvious that I have a love affair with Canadian and almost all things Canadian (with stuff like Justin Beiber & Celine Dion exceptions) and therefore it’s only natural that I would pick a Canadian city. Although I’m a big fan of the Ottawa Senators and think the city is amazingly beautiful and lovely, and have a lot of love for Montreal, Vancouver would be the city that I would choose to live in out of all the places in the world, bar none.

They have natural beauty, close to the water with that big ocean view from most parts of the city and some suburbs, great music & great music scene, movie shooting locale & movie industry (both Canadian and some Hollywood), great places to eat, great beer and some fine looking local women. What more could you ask for?

The Paradise Lost Documentaries

I first heard about the West Memphis 3 back in 2000 when I read an article about the making of the upcoming Blair Witch 2 movie. Joe Berlinger the director of that movie had talked about the West Memphis 3 in the interview that came along with the article and the two documentaries that he & Bruce Sinofsky had made on the triple murder in Arkansas. I knew that some of the rock & metal community were supporting the cause for the release and/or retrial of the 3 young men accused in that case. Over the years since I kept hearing about the WM3 on several occasion and finally got down to watching the 3 documentaries that were made on them and the murders that they were accused off and that lead them to prison.

1996’s Paradise Lost : The Child Murders At Robin Hood Hills was the first documentary that Sinofsky & Berlinger directed about the trials three then teenage boys who came to be known as the¬†West Memphis Three¬†in¬†West Memphis, Arkansas. They were accused of the murder and sexual mutilation of three prepubescent boys in 1993. The boys on trial for the crime were Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin. Damien (then 18 ) was close friends with Jason (16) and they both knew Jessie (17) but were not close with him. They were accused of killing 3 8 years olds – Christopher Byers, Michael Moore and Stevie Branch – whose bodies were found in a ditch in a wooded area of West Memphis called Robin Hood Hills.

In the movie several people connected with the case, including the families of the victims and the accused and also members of the police, prosecution and various experts who gave testimonies in the case. They murders were said to be Satanic in nature as part of an occult ritual to Satan. Damien was someone who was interested in Wicca and had read/owned books on the occult. Jessie was his best friend. They liked to wear mostly black clothes and liked Metallica. The community is shown to be high politically conservative and of mostly Evangelical Christians. Jessie was the first one questioned and he was interrogated by the cops for over 10 hours but only the last 2 were recorded. In the recordings a seemingly coerced Jessie (which is highly suggested in the documentary) confesses to the cops that Damien & Jason had caught & killed the 3 boys. Jessie was with them and says that he had chased and brought back one of the boys who had tried to run away and left them with Jessie & Damien. His confession was inconsistent and he had the time incorrect (he says during the day when the boys were still in school). Jessie has an IQ of 72 and seems a rather simple minded person. He is tried separately and sentenced to life plus 2 terms of 20 years each. Damien is sentenced to death by lethal injection while Jason gets life.

5 years after the 1994 trials, the documentary team revisits Damien who is ppealing his sentence and his defense attorney notices what he believes to be bite marks in a photograph of the face of one of the victims; the prosecution argues that the marks are from a belt buckle and not teeth. Several support groups have been formed in favour of the WM3 and 3 from the Los Angeles film industry are also featured quite heavily in Paradise Lost 2 : Revelations. During the trials in 1994 John Mark Byers, step father of one of the 3 victims Mark, gives the filmmakers a knife which has blood in the hinge. The filmmakers turn the knife over to police, who examine it; the DNA is similar to that of himself and the boy but the evidence is nonetheless inconclusive since the DNA evidence produced was fragmented and can not provide concrete links.

Byers is heavily featured in the documentaries as a camera hogger and hamming it up with his bible quoting, fire, brimstone & hell threats to the WM3. Visiting his wife’s grave he goes into an over dramatic lament and later curses Damien. The WM3 are tested and do not match the alleged “bite marks” on the victim. The support groups for Echols want Byers to have his bitemark compared to the one on the photo, but Byers has had false teeth since four years after his son’s murder. He later provides copies of his dental records to the defense but they don’t match the bites either. Byers later takes & passes a polygraph to prove his innocence but is on several medications that could affect the results. When informed that he has passed the test Byers once again hams it up for the camera.

Released in 2011 Paradise Lost 3 : Purgatory revisits the WM3 now older men. The biggest change is in Jessie who has shaved his head bald and looks quite different. The previous two documentaries have contributed to creating awareness, publicity and support for the WM3. Damien’s defense has hired some of the most renowned forensic scientists to collect DNA and other evidence that had never been tested during the 1994 trials in hopes of getting a new trial.¬† One important fact is the allegations of jury misconduct with the jury foreman discussing the case with any attorney during the Echols-Baldwin trial and bringing Misskelley’s confession into deliberations even though it was not let into evidence.

Forensic experts also uncover DNA and witnesses draw suspicion from Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of the murder victims. A neighbour of Hobbs says she say Hobbs with the boys in the evening of their murders, while he said that he never saw them that day. A hair found in the ligature that bound one of the victims is a match to him, he has told several conflicting stories about his whereabouts during the time of the murders, and he has a history of violence against his wife and possibly his stepson. His alibi also didn’t pan out; he says he was at a friend’s house all day but the friends says that he left a couple of times in between. While many are convinced he should be considered a suspect, the West Memphis, Arkansas¬†Police Department has only questioned him and to this day does not consider him a suspect.

Mr. Byers has changed over a new leaf, says he is now convinced that the WM3 didn’t kill the 3 boys and becomes a big supporter of Damien, Jason & Jessie. He now sets his sights on Hobbs and demands a new trial. n 2007, Pamela Hobbs, the mother of victim Stevie Branch, joined those who have publicly questioned the verdicts, calling for a reopening of the verdicts and further investigation of the evidence. Appeals for a new trial based on new evidence are rejected but in Nov 2010 the Akansas Supreme Court granted an evidentary hearing scheduled for December, 2011, to decide if the evidence is enough for a new trial. This is seen as new hope for the WM3 and their supporters. However, in August, 2011, four months before the hearing is to take place, the prosecutors and defense lawyers talked over a plea deal that would allow the three men to walk out of prison, on the condition that they plead guilty but can maintain their innocence. They reluctantly accept the deal, after 18 years and 78 days, they walk free from prison.
