Rookie Blue – Season 2

Having watched a lot of cop shows and crime/police procedural shows, I must say that there is a huge difference in watching a show like Rookie Blue which focuses a lot on the private & personal lives of the young cops that form the cast of this show. The primary focus being on the love lies and yes it does seem a bit contrived that all the 5 rookies have affairs with cops in the same division (the 15th here) as they work in except for one, Dov Epstein whose girlfriend is also a cop but in bomb squad and works out of another station (they meet in this season). Having said that it’s a lot better than most shows in the same vein as the actual crime / cop stuff is really good and makes it worth your while. As we start the season, Andy’s world explodes by a seemingly senseless act of violence during a concert shooting. When she sets out to unravel the details, she comes into direct conflict with Luke’s former partner, Detective Jo Rosati, a new detective with 15 Division. As Rosati investigates the case, sparks begin to fly between her and Luke. Dov and Chris take charge to find out who the shooter is and Swarek debates whether or not to join Guns & Gangs.

Andy and Gail participate in a drug bust by going undercover as cocktail waitresses but things do not go smoothly. Traci finds herself drawn back to Detective Barber while a complaint is filed against Dov. Andy unintentionally speaks to Tori a little too freely and candidly about her relationship with Luke. Strange happenings and a full moon rattle the rookies. Andy and Sam investigate the theft of some severed heads from a medical lab. A particular man catches their attention as a suspect with his obsessive behavior. Luke and Andy decide to get married, and Sam has trouble hiding his opinions. While trying to protect a young woman who could be the next target, Andy puts both her life and Luke’s in jeopardy. The torching of a laundromat is the latest in a series of arsons which 15 Division must work. The list of suspects is long so Chris and Gail take to the streets while Traci interrogates a person found at the scene. Andy is left to deal with the widow who insists on entering the burnt-out building which ends with the two of them trapped inside. Division 15 sets up a sting operation to catch suspects with outstanding warrants. One suspect, trying to cut a deal, puts Dov and Chris in a life and death situation. Andy and Traci meet a woman who can’t pay her bills and convinces her to seek help. Luke helps out Jo on a job with surveillance and the tension about the past between the two finally reaches its limit.

Indications are that the East Jameson gang was involved in the murder of a police informant, so solving the case will be difficult. The pressure is on when Superintendent Elaine Peck sets up at the station. Elsewhere, Andy is paired with Detective Rosati who unintentionally makes Andy privy to a secret that involves Luke. Stressed out with her mother at the station, Gail is tasked with protecting an eight-year-old boy who’s the only witness to the crime. Andy worries her personal problems are affecting her professionally when a woman is brutally attacked on her watch; Luke’s erratic behavior leads to him being kicked off a case. The primary suspect is Ray Nixon, who had, according to Luke, murdered a rookie from 15. Gail and Traci bring an intoxicated man to the station. As the doctors examine the man’s unusual condition, 15 Division is put under quarantine. Meanwhile, Andy and Sam arrest a man who robbed a bank. Chris goes undercover to get some information from the man. Traci is stuck with a married couple who both work as paramedics and do nothing but argue. Dov shares a kiss with his bomb squad officer girlfriend, Sue. Traci and Gail try to find out the motive of an Asian woman for calling the police to report a fake bomb threat at a restaurant. Dov, Andy and Chris have their equine training at the Mounted Unit, together with other rookies from 27 Division. Chris meets his old friend from the academy, Aaron, while an intoxicated Dov tells Gail his feeling for her.

Andy saves a woman who is pinned in her car while the remaining of 15 Division investigates a kidnapping case. Swarek tells Andy that he has decided to go back to Guns & Gangs. Chris questions Dov and Gail about their relationship while Andy decides to call Swarek and says she is ready to take their relationship to the next level not knowing he’s already left for his undercover assignment. Andy, Dov and Traci participate in an undercover training exercise which results in some unplanned situations and choices. They run into Swarek and almost blow their covers to save a girl’s life. Dov runs into an old friend of his brother. Chris and Gail must look past the wreckage of their relationship to determine what to do when a young boy found tied up as the result of bullying. Gail’s stolen uniform has the rookies looking for a cop impersonator, but it is Chris and Dov who find clues that may offer up the motive. While undercover, Swarek finds himself in a life threatening situation when he and Andy can not stay apart. Swarek’s gone missing and Andy tries to find clues that will help her and the rookies locate him before it is too late. Meanwhile, investigating this case will implicate one officer and threaten Andy’s job. Sam Swarek is rescued by his cop friends and his torturer is arrested but McNally is suspended for her part in the undercover operation going wrong.

A Man Walks Into A Bar . . .

A man is sitting in a bar staring at his drink. After staring at it for half an hour without taking a sip, one of the bar regulars decides to have some fun with him. He picks up the man’s drink and knocks it back in one. The man starts crying. ‘Don’t take it like that,’ says the regular. ‘It was a joke. I’ll buy you another one.’ ‘It’s not just that,’ replies the man. ‘This day has been the worst one of my life. First, I oversleep and get into work late. My boss fires me and, when I leave the building, I find my car had been stolen. I get a cab home but leave my briefcase on the back seat with my wallet in it. Then, when I get home, I find my wife in bed with the gardener. After all that I come to this bar and then, when I’ve just made up my mind to end it all, you show up and drink my poison…’

A man walks into a bar and orders 20 pints of Guinness. He lines them up on the bar and announces that he’ll give £100 to the man who can drink all of them. Patrick sticks up his hand and says he’d like a go if the man can wait half an hour. Patrick then leaves the pub, comes back 30 minutes later and downs the 20 pints one after another. The man is impressed and hands over the money, ‘But tell me,’ he asks. ‘Where did you go to for that half an hour?’ ‘Ah, well,’ says Patrick. ‘Before I took your bet I popped to the pub next door to see if I could do it.’

A man walks into a Florida bar and finds they’re holding a contest. The bartender tells him the details: ‘First you have to drink three bottles of moonshine. Second, you go out back and pull a sore tooth out the mouth of my pet ’gator. And last, you have to go upstairs and have sex with Ma Jackson, the town’s oldest, ugliest prostitute. If you can do all that in one hour and stay conscious, you win a year’s supply of beer.’ ‘Sounds tough,’ says the man, ‘but I’ll give it a go.’ The man drinks the three bottles of moonshine then, completely plastered, staggers out back to find the ’gator. After half an hour of crashes and screaming, the man crawls back covered in bruises and cuts, ‘Okay,’ slurs the man. ‘Sho were ish the old broad wid the bad tooth?’

A man walks into a bar and says to the bartender, ‘I want you to give me 12-year scotch, and don’t try to fool me, because I can tell the difference.’ The bartender is skeptical and decides to try to trick the man with five-year scotch. The man takes a sip, scowls and says, ‘Bartender, this crap is five-year scotch. I told you I want 12-year scotch.’ The bartender tries once more with eight-year scotch. The man takes a sip, grimaces and says, ‘Bartender, I don’t want eight-year scotch. Give me 12-year scotch!’ Impressed, the bartender gets the 12-year scotch. The man takes a sip and sighs, ‘Ah, now that’s the real thing.’ A drunk has been watching this with great interest. He stumbles over, sets a glass down in front of the man, and says, ‘Hey, try this one.’ The man takes a sip and immediately spits it out again, ‘Yechhh! This stuff tastes like piss!’ The drunk says, ‘Yeah. Now how old am I?’

Silent Hill : Revelation

Silent Hill Revelation is the follow up to 2006’s Silent Hill which was based on the highly popular survival horror video game of the same name. The sequel, released last year, is a Canadian-French production written & directed by Michael J Bassett & produced by Samuel Hadida & Don Carmody. The film also standsout in having actror selected by fan suggestion and was shot on a $20 million budget and filmed in Canada. The movie sees Sean Bean return as the father of lead character Sharon now called Heather played by Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington (Jon Snow from Game Of Thrones) and featuring supporting roles by Deborah Kara Unger, Martin Donovan, Malcolm McDowell & Carrie-Ann Moss who plays the lead antagonist.

At the start of the film we find Sharon, who’s name was chaged to Heather Mason and her adoptive father Christopher/Harry Mason assuming different identities and moving from town to town. We learn that Rose, her mother, was able to free Sharon/from one of the alternate dimensions using one half of a talisman called the Seal of Metatron, but Rose remained trapped in Silent Hill and has not been seen again. In the new town, just as she is about to turn 18 Heather is haunted by hallucinations & dreams of Silent Hill. She is traced by a PI who was hired by the Order (the cult of Silent Hill) but he changes his mind and wants to help her evade them. Heather warns Harry, but he is abducted by the Order and taken to Silent Hill. Unaware of this, Heather goes to a mall to wait for Harry, but enters the Silent Hill’s Otherworld. Douglas explains he was hired by the Order to find Heather, but decides to help her when he discovered who his clients were. A monster, the Missionary, kills Douglas, but returning to the real world, Heather flees, leaving her a suspect to Douglas’ murder.

Her new friend from school, Vincent, escorts her home where they find a message instructing her to go to Silent Hill. Heather learns the truth by reading a letter from her father, and decides to go to Silent Hill to rescue him; she takes the other half of the Seal of Metatron which is stored in her house. At a motel Vincent reveals that he is the son of the Order’s leader Claudia and was sent to bring Heather to Silent Hill willingly but he wants to help her and save her. He tells her that she is is a part of Alessa Gillespie, a girl who was burnt 38 years ago by the Order, leading her to create the town’s shifting dimensions. A shift to the Otherworld occurs, and Vincent is dragged away by the Missionary after telling Heather to find his grandfather Leonard who possesses the Seal of Metatron’s other half. Heather then goes to Silent Hill in search of Leonard and meets Alessa’s mother Dahlia who tells her that Claudia has a big purpose for Heather. After dodging several hideous monstrous creatures – the mannequin spider is totally awesome as are the faceless killer mannequin nurses – she finds Leonard who demands her half of the seal and fuses it with the other half inside him. He becomes a strong creature and attacks Heather but she is able to disable him by shooting at hi and digging the completed seal from inside his flesh. She frees Vincent, who is condemned from betraying the order for falling for Heather. Dark Alessa, the manifestation of Alessa’s wrath, confronts Heather who embraces her counterpart, absorbing her and making Alessa complete once again. Meanwhile Vincent is captured again.

Heather confronts Claudia, who is holding Harry and Vincent hostage. Claudia explains that Alessa’s destiny was to be the incubator for a deity worshipped by the Order; the deity will punish all sinners upon its birth and Heather’s destiny will be complete. Realizing Leonard’s words, Heather gives Claudia the Seal of Metatron, revealing her to be the Missionary. Heather summons the creature Red Pyramid, who kills the Missionary, allowing Heather to rescue Vincent and Harry. As the fog fades from town, Harry decides to stay in Silent Hill to find and free Rose, leaving Heather in Vincent’s care. Heather and Vincent hitch a ride with a truck driver (and leave town, as Silent Hill is consumed by fog.

As much as I liked the first one, which was a decent horror flick, this one turned out to be a lot more boring and predictable. A shame though because of the said really cool creatures that I dug. 5.5 outta 10!

We Go Up In Flames

I had this weird dream a few days ago. It was once again while living in my old family house in Thrikkakara (oh how I miss that place) and I think in this dream I was a lot younger than I am now. And it feel so weird & tragic but there is a humourous element in the end or more like black humour.

Anyways in this dream there are some visitors in my house and they all either leave the house for a while or go and sit in the farthermost  part of the house or something like that. All I know is that when I start the dream I am alone in the front of the house and playing with two dogs who are not mine but belong to a friend of mine. These two big dogs – funny that they should be in my dream because I have never met the owner or the dogs, she is an online friend of mine. Anyway I think those are her dogs, they certainly look like them. She isn’t in this dream by the way. So there I am playing with these dogs in the front yard, throwing a tennis ball for them to chase and fetch. A little later, a baby less than 2 year old who belongs to a lady who has come to visit my family comes to the verandha as she wanted to watch the dogs.

I initially do not notice her as I have my back to the house. A postman comes to the front gate and I open it to sign for a package and take the package from him. As I do this, the dogs sneak out through the semi open gate and run onto the road. Panicking I go and place the package on the front porch and turn around to get the dogs back when I notice that the baby girl has walked out to the gate and gone up to the dogs. She wanted to pet them and in her excitement she wandered off without me noticed. Really scared now I run out to the road and try and get the dogs & the baby back inside. The dogs have now surrounded the baby and they are as curious about her as she is about them. Two things happen at once; the girl reaches out to cuddle one of the dogs and at the same time a big truck honks a loud horn in a sudden blast as it passed by. Frightened & angered by the noise, one of the dogs bites off a large chunk of the baby’s head. The baby is killed instantly! I scream and shout at the dogs but it is too late. I pick up the dead baby in my arms with tears in my eyes. I don’t know what to do and I also don’t want people to see that the dog has bitten her and caused her death. So I place the baby in middle of the road and cover her with leaves and wait for a big vehicle to run over her and hope that tires going over her will hide the dog’s jaw marks on her head.

This happens and I pick the baby up and bring her to the house as people gather. I tell them that I found her on the road – she was not attended to, I didn’t see her sneak out and going out the gate as I was occupied. The mother of the baby is hysterical and crying out loud as to some other people. As people look about the road, I am plagued with guilt on knowing the truth and cannot stand it anymore. I don’t want to live, so crying I run to the garage and find a large can of fuel and pour it all over me. The mother of the baby sees me and knows something is up. She runs to me and grabs the rest of the fuel and just as I light a match on me and go up in flames, she douses herself and grabs onto me. The two of us are in flames and people are shocked on seeing this and are stunned in silence and do not move to do anything. And here is the weirdest part – something is wrong; we are both burning but we don’t seem to be in much pain. After a moment or two – and I can laugh about this part now – black or death metal music plays outta no where and me and this lady start to sing in that style while writhing around in flames!!! Obviously we aren’t dying though or bodies are burning in the flames and we keep singing to the music, death metal style like we were performing on stage!

And then I woke up! A bit shocked, a bit shaken and thoroughly confused. If dreams are meant to symbolize something, what the hell does this one mean???

Guest Blog Post : What Bollywood Needs To Do

What Does Bollywood Need To Learn From Hollywood?

There are lots of comparisons doing the rounds between Bollywood and Hollywood. While some claim that Bollywood is better than Hollywood, some stand by Hollywood. If you happen to be a Bollywood fan, you might not like to accept the fact that Hollywood is definitely better than Bollywood. It is true that Bollywood movies are now watched around the world and the audience for Bollywood movies is growing by the day. It is equally true that both have their own images. However, Bollywood needs to break from its image if it wants to improve its standards and the movie watching experience of the viewer. There are many areas where Bollywood is way behind Hollywood and where Bollywood needs to make improvisation.

Bollywood Story – Old Vine In New Bottle

Bollywood supporters claim that the story of Bollywood is one of its strongest attractions. The family drama is what interests them the most. Much against their preferences, it needs to be said that this family story has been told a number of times and in number of ways that these stories are now just becoming tiresome to watch. How long would one like to watch a love story however interesting and engaging love stories might be? The stories lack creativity most of the times, as it is the same story present in a different form. Hence, old vine in new bottle.

If Bollywood directors were to say that they give what audience prefers, it is nothing but passing the bucket. Audience are prepared to enjoy better stories, different screen play and no body demands that the hero and heroine dance around the trees singing songs, which practically none does in reality. It is true that even aliens do not attack us in reality as shown by Hollywood movies, at least they show something unique and their presentation of the story keeps you engaged. Their usage of technology in such movies elevates the experience level of the audience and challenges technical brains into surpassing the technological brilliance presented by Hollywood professionals.

Visual Effects And Sound Effects

It is transparent that the quality of visual effects and sound effects produced by Hollywood is beyond the reach of the Bollywood, at least at present. You take one look at the films produced in Hollywood in the 1970s and you will see that Bollywood movies are still to reach the stage. It is not to be understood that Bollywood visual effects are underrated; it is only to state that Hollywood standards are far higher. Bollywood is behind the curve when compared to the visual and sound effects of Hollywood.

Needs To Be More Organized

Except for the films produced by noted Bollywood directors, most of the films are made without sufficient planning. There needs to be a lot of paper work before one packs for a shooting. Hollywood directors are more disciplined and they do not spare any effort to ensure quality of the movie and perfection, be it a period film or a science fiction. When Hollywood takes time to produce a movie it is because it aims at perfection and bringing in the effect that the film needs in visual and sound effects not to forget the setting. Whereas some Bollywood movies take time to get completed owing to lack of preparedness. This is unfortunate but it is the truth.

Bollywood has its plus points and great in numbers too. Apart from the best numbers produced by music directors and great performance by some actors, Bollywood has other good features too. There is potential but untapped. There are great stories but untold. There are efficient workers but unused and there are great brains that are not stressed enough to produce. Some Bollywood films definitely stand apart from the regular in terms of story, presentation and setting. You will find that some of the best hits in Bollywood in recent times were not just love stories. Hence, Bollywood needs to come out of the family drama image and concentrate to improve its technical strength. Being in the film industry for a century, it is not asking for too much, right?

The Forest Or The Trees?

When you gaze out your window — real or figurative — do you see the forest first, or the trees?

This blog prompt comes from the idiom can’t see the forest for the trees which means ” To be so concerned with specifics or details that the larger problem, situation or point is missed”. It means that if you look at things one at a time, you might not realize that a branch of separate “trees” go together to make a “forest“. When you are too close to a situation you need to step back and get a little perspective. When you do you will notice there was a whole forest you couldn’t see before because you were too close, and focusing on the trees. Simply that you have focused on the many details and have failed to see the overall view, impression or key point.

Now that is out of the way, I must say that IMNSHO (in my not so humble opinion) you have to see the big picture first and then only go into the details. Again, just my opinion. And maybe not always see the whole thing first but atleast be aware that the “trees” that you are seeing, or even “tree”, is part of a big picture or a large forest if you will. This is true for most of the time for me. Everytime I notice something in my mind I’m always thinking is this part of something else? or is it just something unique and singular.

However I must say this – for those of you who always look at the big picture first always remember that there is beauty in the details and hence appreciating a single tree as a thing of beauty or something to pay attention to, is always good. It just makes so much more sense.

Hotel Transylvania

The debut feature film of  Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Cartoon Network series Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory and Star Wars : Clones Wars, is 2012’s Hotel Transylvania. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. A sequel, titled Hotel Transylvania 2, is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 25, 2015.

The story is that of family & friends, albeit with the monsters. Count Dracula has created a huge castle which also doubles as a massive 5 star hotel in Transylvania and protected it with a spooky forest & cemeteries hence hiding it from the human world. He does this to raise his daughter Mavis in relative safety and wants her to have nothing to do with the human population after the death of his wife Martha, who was killed when humans set their former house on fire. Since then Drac has played daddy with his baby watching as she grows. Every year on her birthday he invites all the monsters for a long weekend of relaxation & partying away from mankind and the monsters come to stay at the hotel which is completely human free and safe for monsters. This year it is special as Mavis turns 118 (equivalent to turning 18 for us humans I guess). So the guests arrive including Dracula’s closest friends Frankenstein & his wife Eunice, werewolf Wayne, his wife Wanda and their large litter of pups, Murray the Mummy & Griffin The Invincible Man. Drac’s best friends are ofcourse uncles & aunts to Mavis and they dote on her. Dracula let’s Mavis go out to a human village for 30 minutes as it is her big wish.

At the village she is “attacked” with fire by zombies dressed as humans and Mavis goes back home. Dracula has stages this to protect his daughter from staying away from humans as he fears that they will kill her just as they did his wife. He is happy that she isn’t interested anymore. As the evening progresses, a human backpacker Johnny comes to the castle thinking it is a hotel with a fancy dress theme going on. Dracula frantically disguises him as a and passes him off as Johnnystein, a distant cousin of Frank’s right arm. However Mavis & Johnny meet and they feel an attraction to each other. Dracula pretends that Johnny is here to help him plan the party and Johnny gets on well with the monsters once his initial fear of them dissipates. Dracula wants to get rid of Johnny but they bond in a friendly chase on flying tables and Dracula begins to respect him. He tells him the reason he hates humans is because the death of his wife at the hands of an angry mob shortly after Mavis was born, and is surprised at Johnny’s understanding and knowledge of the lore. Johnny tries to leave but Mavis finds him and they grow closer after he shows her her first sunrise, under the protection of a shade ofcourse. Johnny has to evade Quasimodo the cook who finds out that he is a human and Drac rescues him from being cooked but at the party when Mavis & Johnny kiss, Drac gets angry. Quasimodo drags himself to the party and reveals that Johnny is human.

Mavis is undeterred by her attraction and wants to be with Johnny, even though he is human. But Johnny rejects her out of respect for her father and leaves the hotel. Mavis tragically resolves to remain at Hotel Transylvania for the remainder of her life. Seeing his daughter losing her zest for life and after finding a gift that Marth left for her (a book about true love) Dracula enlists the help of Frank, Wayne, Griffin, and Murray to go get Johnny back. hey head to the airport and encounter a Monster Festival along the way, instead of being frightened by the real monsters appearing, they instead help Dracula by providing him shelter from the sunlight so he can get to the airport quickly only to see Johnny’s plane taking off. Dracula turns into a bat and chases the plan and let’s Johnny know about Mavis and asks him to come back. Dracula returns Johnny to Mavis, who confesses that their Zing was mutual and the two kiss, making Dracula realize his little girl is all grown up and can make her own decisions. The movie ends with a big party and the monsters rapping on stage.

Bit of silly fun and crazy stuff. The kind of animated film I like ;). I liked it a lot of 8 outta 10!

Sherlock : A Study In Pink

The BBC series Sherlock is a crime/drama that presents a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Create by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and based on the works of Sir Arthu Conan Doyle, Sherlock has so far seen just 6 episodes (each however 90 minutes long) with the first series of 3 being televised in 2010. The show stars  Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Using modern technology Holmes, assists the Metropolitan Police Service, primarily DI Greg Lestrade (Rupert Graves), in solving various crimes. Holmes is assisted by his flatmate, Dr. John Watson, who has returned from military service in Afghanistan. Arch-nemesis Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) is a recurring feature. Pathologist Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey) assists Holmes in her laboratory. Other recurring roles include Una Stubbs as Mrs. Hudson, Holmes and Watson’s landlady; Vinette Robinson as Sgt. Sally Donovan; and Mark Gatiss as Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft Holmes.

The first episode A Study In Pink is loosely based around the case A Study In Scarlett. As the episodes opens we see Dr. John Watson, an ex-army doctor injured in Afghanistan and still haunted by his time there. He walks with a limp and the help of a cane and is not having much progress with his therapist, even if she has noted that his injury seems psychosomatic in nature. A mutual friend introduces him to Sherlock Holmes, who is currently experimenting in a lab and either seemingly oblivious to the attentions of Pathologist Molly or he knows it & is purposely feigning ignorance to not encourage her. A series of strange suicides, by swallowing a deadly pill, interests the attention of Sherlock who texts all the journalists in the press conference held by Lestrade and himself stating that he knows more than any of them about the case. Lestrade calls him in to the latest death, a lady dressed in pink. Sherlock invites Watson to join him and showcases his stunning sense of observation & deduction at the crime scene. As he suddenly leaves Watson is approached by an assistance of Mycroft (Sherlock’s older brother although he doesn’t state who he is at the first meeting) to go and meet a rich man who offers Watson a large sum of money to “spy” on Sherlock. Watson refuses and leaves the meeting only to be contacted by Sherlock, who has found a missing suitcase of the recently deceased.

The two spy a suspicious cabbie and chase them all over the streets. In his rush of adrenaline Watson forgets his cane and runs, jumps & leaps along with Holmes. At the flat, the police are doing a “drug search” as an excuse to get in touch with him and see what he knows. Using the dead woman’s clue ‘Rachel’ (which she had scratched on the ground) they track her phone using her GPS password and find that she slipped the phone in the killer’s coat. The killer is a dying cabbie who holds his victims at gun point as they enter his taxi and makes them play a game of swallowing pills with him. Only he knows which is the safe pill and which is the deadly pill but each time he wins and the victim dies quickly. The cabbie contacts Sherlock via text and calls him outside and they drive off in his cab. They arrive at a school building, and the cabbie pulls out a gun and two bottles, each containing an identical pill. The cabbie says one of the pills is harmless, the other poison; he invites his victims to choose one, promising that he will swallow the other – and that he will simply shoot them if they refuse. Sherlock correctly deduces that the cabbie is dying from a brain aneurysm, but that is not the only reason he is killing people. The cabbie admits that a “fan” of Sherlock’s, contacted him and offered to “sponsor” his work, paying money for each person the cabbie killed, to be left to the cabbie’s children.

Sherlock realises that the cabbie is lying, and calls his bluff on the gun, which is actually a novelty cigarette lighter. He walks off, but the cabbie challenges him again to choose a pill and see if he can solve the puzzle. Meanwhile Watson tracks Sherlock & the cabbie using the GPS and arrives at the place but goes into the adjacent building.  Through a window in the adjacent building, John sees Sherlock about to take one of the pills, and shoots the cabbie. Sherlock questions the dying cabbie, first about whether he got the pill game right, and then about the identity of his “fan”, the cabbie’s sponsor. Finally, the cabbie reveals a name: “Moriarty”. Sherlock calls Scotland Yard who surround the premises and theorize on the identity of the shooter. Sherlock deduces Watson but doesn’t share that information as he see him waiting by the crowd. As the two new friends leave they run into Mycroft & Anthea and the two brothers bicker for a bit before Sherlock & Watson leave for dinner, a new partnership having being forged.

Brilliantly filmed, with great writing, directing & acting. This Sherlock blows the film versions of recent years out of the water.  Although I was wary of bringing Holmes to the current times, I was blown away by the performances. A must watch for detective freaks!

Kerala Rocked Hard With Celeb Scandals

The past couple of days has seen Kerala and India (in the second case) rocked by two different scandals. The first one was regarding an actor Kalabhavan Mani allegedly assaulting two forest officers in the night. Mani is a mostly comedic actor who has also donned on a few more serious roles as a hero or villain and won a few state & a national award for his role as a blind street singer. He is known to be more down to earth than most actors and is also known for his charity work. However a couple of days ago he was in the news for all he wrong reasons. Apparently he was traveling with friends in a car when they were stopped by two officials for routine car checking. The actor responded violently when he was asked to open the boot of the car and he & his friend, a doctor, assaulted the two officers. The forest officials said that Mani was inebriated. The officers sustained injuries on the chest, hands, legs and eyes one of them more serious. They were admitted to the Chalakudy Taluk Hospital.

Jaya Gopinath, who was travelling with her husband Maliyekkal Gopinath and Mani, filed a complaint against the officials, complaining that the officials verbally abused her and misbehaved with her.The actor had gotten himself admitted to a hospital in his native Chalakudy. The police have registered cases against both Mani and the injured forest officials.  The latest news is that Mani has gone into hiding immediately after the police registered a case against him under non-bailable sections of the IPC. A police team visited Mani’s new and ancestral houses at Chalakudy on Thursday to take him into custody in connection with the case, but he was found missing, said the police. However some friends of his say that he had left for Bangalore on Wednesday night to take part in the shooting of a Tamil Movie.

The second incident which happened a day later when former India Test bowler Sreesanth S. and two other players have been arrested by Delhi police on suspicion of spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League, sports officials said on Thursday. Sreesant is a fellow Keralite and a fellow resident of Cochin. The IPL is kinda like the English Premier League or any of the European leagues for cricket and features Indian & most of the top foreign players from nations like England, Australia, in 9 teams. Sreesant, who has been in controversial situations before, was immediately suspended from an ILP matches along with his Rajasthan Royals team-mates & co-conspirators Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila and will face harsher actions if they are found guilty post a trial. Spot-fixing is the manipulation of individual incidents within a match which may not affect the outcome of the contest, most famously exposed in a London trial and jailing of three Pakistani cricketers in 2011.

Delhi’s police commissioner Neeraj Kumar alleged that the three Indian bowlers took money to concede a pre-determined number of runs in three different IPL matches. For 4m Indian rupees (£48,000) Sreesanth agreed to concede 13 or more runs in his second over of a May 9 match at Mohali, Kumar alleged. Sreesanth tucked a towel in his waistband to signal to a bookie, giving him enough time to “indulge in heavy betting”, the police chief said.

I’m not surprised in either case. The Indian film world has always been associated with corrupt politicians, underworld figures and lots of illegal activities going on. An actor with good connections misbehaving and thinking himself to be above the law is nothing news – Mani has had two other cases against him, both which were settled. Sreesanth is known for being arrogant and hot-headed and his antics have lost him more fans than he can ever know. And cricket & match-fixing is nothing new; this is India after all and corruption & illegal stuff is everyday news. Not surprised in that case either. It’s not the first match fixing scandal to rock cricket and it won’t be the last. And I couldn’t care much since I don’t watch it and I can’t stand the game.

There that’s my two cents worth!

ROSHAN’S ELEVEN : Women Singers

The bulk of my music collection is by male musicians, male singers, all-male band members, male musicians. While I love the female singers & musicians in my collection, they are a small minority. I used to have this theory that since I usually sing along with the songs that I play on my stereo system, cd player and now laptop in mp3 form, the lyrics are very important to me and I usually just connect better with the male point of view in the lyrics. I’m not so sure about that anymore but I still find a vastly male dominated collection of music. However here are my favourite women singers, my top 11 in no particular order;

  • Sarah McLachlan
  • Jann Arden
  • Isabelle Boulay
  • Tori Amos
  • Chantal Kreviazuk
  • Alison Krauss
  • Sheila Carabine (Dala)
  • Amanda Walther (Dala)
  • Terri Clark
  • Kathleen Edwards
  • Jessie Farrell

Notable mentions would be Alanis Morissette, Sarah Harmer, Dido, Tegan & Sara, Jewel, Katie Melua, Lisa Brokop & Regina Specktor.

Goodbye Wigan, Reading & Queens Park Rangers

As another season ends, another 3 sides get related from the English Premier League and will play next season in Football League Championships, the second highest league in England. Those 3 sides for 2012-13 are Wigan Athletic, Reading FC & Queens Park Rangers. We have the final round of games to be played this weekend but there are no chances for any of the 3 teams to move out of the relagation zone.

Wigan reached the FA Cup Final for the first time in their history this season. In the final, played at Wembley Stadium, Wigan beat Manchester City 1–0, with a goal by Ben Watson scored in injury time. Wigan’s first ever major trophy also gave the club a place in the group stage of the Europa League. Following their 4–1 defeat to Arsenal three days later, Wigan Athletic end their eight year spell in the Premier League and became the first team to be relegated and win the FA Cup in the same season.

Having gained promotion at the end of last season after winning the Championship. Reading will be competing in the Championship again next season having been relegated after one year back in the top flight. On 23 November 2012, Mark Hughes was sacked on the back of a poor start to the 2012–13 season, having amassed only 4 points in 12 games and with the club languishing at the bottom of the Premier League despite significant financial investment in new players in the 11 months of Hughes’ tenure. A day later, Harry Redknapp was confirmed as the new manager. On Sunday 28 April 2013, in a 0-0 draw against fellow relegation rivals Reading F.C. and with 3 games of the season to play, QPR were relegated from the Barclays Premier League down to the Championship after two seasons in the top flight.

Django Unchained

Highly anticipated and I had to wait a long time to get a copy of this movie. Quintin Tarantino has made some really good & fun movies and this one joins his previous bests Pulp Fiction & Inglorious Basterdsamong others as one to watch. Tarantino brought in Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio & Samuel L Jackson with Kerry Washington & Don Johnson in supporting roles. Stacey Sher, Reginald Hudlin & Pilar Savone produced the film which was also written by Tarantino. The film received very positive reviews from critics and was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. Christoph Waltz received several accolades for his performance, and won the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and his second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Tarantino ventures into pre-Civil War America and addresses racism, slavery & abuse while also paying homage to Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s & early 70s. The key to the film is, in my humble opinion, Christoph Waltz who’s portrayal of Dr. King Schultz made the film for me. The delightful gentleman bounty hunter  & ex-dentist who travels along in a horse carriage with a bouncy plastic tooth attached on a spring on top and his old world charms & manners is miles apart from his quick wit, equally quick draw on the gun and ruthless manner in which he disposes off the victims. And when confronted by the law or others, he has the audacity to smile and explain that he is a bounty hunter and that the men he shot were in fact wanted dead or alive and that anyone harming him or arresting him will be in violation of the law themselves. This he says with the smile of a doctor who is reassuring a young patient that it “won’t hurt”! The German doctor/bounty hunter frees Django from slavery and in return for helping him with identifying some wanted men, trains the ex-slave and takes him on as a partner.

After becoming a proficient bounty hunter trained in the job by Dr. Schultz the duo now head out to rescue Django’s wife, Broomhilda, who was also sold into slavery in the deep south. The pair track her to a plantation owned by the equally charming & ruthless Calvin Candie. At a club we are subjected to two black slaves forced to fight, gladiator style, for the entertainment of their owners. Under the pretense of purchasing one of Calvin’s prized fighters Schultz & Django make Calvin’s acquaintance and are invited to his home. The pair offer $12,000 for the slave and plan to obtain Broomhilda in the deal as well but Calvin’s loyal old slave Stephen (played by Jackson) suspects that the young female slave knows Django and their cover is blown. Calvin allows them to buy only the lady for $12,000 which Schultz agrees but the latter shoots the slave owner dead when they are about to shake hands. Shultz is also killed and Django fights a standoff with Calvin’s men. He gives up & is captured when Stephen takes his wife as hostage and later Django is tortured and sold to be taken to the mines for work. He tricks his way out of his shackles and kills the escorts and rides back into town. As revenge he kills off all the men in Calvin’s house including the sister but let’s the black slaves go. Stephen is shot on both knees and left to die as Django sets off dynamite in the house. He rides off with his missus before anyone else can notice.

I get why everyone loved the movie and Tarantino has done a fine job. I loved most of the characters, even Don Johnson who has a memorable scene with Klu Klux Klan wannabes who are so inept it hurt as I laughed, everyone except Django that is. Perhaps because I don’t like Jamie Foxx; I don’t see what’s great about his performance. It’s a little overkill at the end and I feel it’s just showboating. Style but no substance. Leonardo was great in his smaller than usual performance, Samuel Jackson excelled in his role as an elderly villain and Kerry Washington shined as well. When they reach the plantation part till the shooting begins – that was the part that bored me quite a bit and was duller than the rest of the movie. It is long, slightly too long at 2 hours and 45 minutes. I’d give it an 8 outta 10!

2013 NHL Playoff Lineups – Round Of 8

playoff image from Fansided

That was an eventful Stanley Cup quaterfinals. The Vancouver Canucks folded and were beated 0-4 by San Jose. Favoured Montreal Canadiens were beaten 1-5 by my Ottawa Senators and the Leafs battled it to 7 games before blowing a 4-1 lead and losing to the Boston Bruins. Detroit made it through, although they had some scares and so did Los Angeles & New York. Now on to the semi finals for both conferences.

Senators vs Penguins – I don’t expect the Senators to win this round. But then I didn’t expect them to beat Montreal either. This squad is fighting like a team and if they can score enough goals they might squeak through. But in all honesty I expect the Pens to win in 6 and go on to win Stanley’s cup.

Bruins vs Rangers – expect it to be high scoring, expect it to be heavy hitting and some battles on the ice. I expect the Rangers to win it in 7 games. This could go down to the wire and it could be a very entertaining series.

Blackhawks vs Red Wings – Detroit are always there in the thick of things, always expected to go far in the playoffs and be regular contenders. They failed to impress this season but that’s due to the very high standards they have maintained. Still I pick Chicago to win in 6.

Kings vs Sharks – Maybe this is the year of the Sharks. If they do go to the finals I’d support them over the Penguins who I also expect to win the Cup in the end. But first San Jose has to get through defending champions LA and this is not gonna be easy. Expect lots of goals and the series to go down to the wire.

Beer Types – Old Ale / Stock Ale

Old Ale, also known as Stock Ale or Keeping Ale, is a style of English beer, often of high original gravity, featuring complex flavors produced by long aging, often in wood. This style was also traditionally known in England as Strong Ale, although that term is now also used both to refer to a separate style of unaged beer as well as a generic term for Imperial beer styles and other strong beer styles.

Old Ales, contrary to expectation, do not have to be especially strong: they can be no more than 4% alcohol, though the Gale’s and O’Hanlon’s versions are considerably stronger. Neither do they have to be dark: Old Ale can be pale and burst with lush sappy malt, tart fruit and spicy hop notes. Darker versions will have a more profound malt character with powerful hints of roasted grain, dark fruit, polished leather and fresh tobacco. The hallmark of the style remains a lengthy period of maturation, often in bottle rather than bulk vessels. Old Ales typically range from 4% to 6.5%.

Old Ale recalls the type of beer brewed before the Industrial Revolution, stored for months or even years in unlined wooden vessels known as tuns. The beer would pick up some lactic sourness as a result of wild yeasts, lactobacilli and tannins in the wood. The result was a beer dubbed ‘stale’ by drinkers: it was one of the components of the early, blended Porters. The style has re-emerged in recent years, due primarily to the fame of Theakston’s Old Peculier, Gale’s Prize Old Ale and Thomas Hardy’s Ale, the last saved from oblivion by O’Hanlon’s Brewery in Devon.

Other examples are Fuller’s Vintage Ale & pictured here is Great Lakes Nosferatu Stock Ale.

Cmdr Hadfield To Planet Earth

The very first music video from Space in the ISS! Astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield sings David Bowie’s Space Oddity.

Hadfield, commander of the ISS, rose to fame after embracing social media, from Facebook to Twitter, with a little technical help from Evan, his 27-year-old son. He sent missives from space, posted breathtaking photos and sang a duet with the Barenaked Ladies. In a video filmed aboard the station, Hadfield donned jeans and a T-shirt to cover the Bowie classic, Space Oddity.
