Despicable Me

What kind of rock was I hiding under? How did I miss out on this animated movie and the cute awesomeness that is the Minions? Although I knew about a movie called Despicable Me and that it was an animation film, the story that I had in mind was something else totally and it wasn’t something that I had picked out for watching. For the past few weeks I’ve noticed this craze on the internet about something called the Minions and I had no clue as to what they were. I saw some pics and though “Hmmm, what are this cartoon like creatures?” and finally I understand that they were related to the sequel of Despicable Me coming out. It is a giant hit. Naturally I had to see what the fuss was all about so I sat down to watch 2010’s Despicable Me yesterday. And I loved it.

The movie is a computer-animated¬†3D¬†comedy film¬†from¬†Universal Pictures¬†and¬†Illumination Entertainment¬†that was released on July 9, 2010 in the United States. It is Illumination Entertainment’s first film. It was directed by Pierre Coffin¬†and¬†Chris Renaud, based on an original story by Sergio Pablos. It boasts the voices of¬†Steve Carrell, Jason Segal, Russell Brand & Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher as the 3 girls. Why and how do they make little girls voice in animation movie sound so much cuter than anything I have ever heard? :) Anyways, you must know the story; Gru is a super villain who’s edo is hurt as a younger villain, Vector, has out-shined everyone else by stealing The Great Pyramid of Giza. Wanting to do better, Gru approaches the Bank of Evil for the money to set about his latest attempt – Gru plans, with the assistance of Dr. Nefario, to shrink and steal, an idea based on his childhood dream of being an astronaut, which was always discouraged by his mother Marlena (voiced by Julie Andrews). However he is denied the money by the Bank president, who is Vector’s father, and is belittled for his failures.

Gru and his minions steal a shrink ray from a secret base in Asia but the up-and-coming super-villain, Vector, who was also responsible for the Pyramid theft, immediately steals it from Gru, as revenge for freezing his head earlier. Gru is unable to get into Vector’s technologically guarded fortress until he sees 3 orphaned girls selling cookies who Vector orders from. Pretending to be a dentist, Gru¬† adopts the girls from Miss Hattie’s Home for Girls, planning on using them to infiltrate Vector’s base so he can steal the shrink ray back. However the girls prove to be a handful and he is ofcourse an inept parent. Finally Gru gets them to go to Vector’s place to deliver the cookies, among which are Dr. Nefarious’s robot cookies. Using them Gru us able to sneak in along with his minions and steal the shrink ray back. On the way back however the girls want to go to a theme park and Gru wants to leave them there but is unable to and joins them in rides and winning a stuffed toy for the girls. The girls warm up to him as he wins the rigged game Later, Gru contacts Mr. Perkins, stating that he has finally got the shrink ray in his possession. Margo, Edith, and Agnes interrupt the meeting, and Perkins announces that he has lost confidence in Gru and will no longer fund his operations.¬† As Gru tells his minions of the lack of funds, the girls give him their savings and so do the minions – Gru decides to fund his own rocket to steal the moon! As the day planned to launch their plan ends up being the same day as the girls’ ballet recital. Gru becomes conflicted and Dr. Nefario, seeing this as interfering with the plan, arranges for the girls to be returned to the orphanage. Around the same time, Mr. Perkins informs Vector of Gru’s possession of the shrink ray and the adoption of the three girls, inciting Vector to take action.

Dodging Vector’s plan to stop him Gru is able to reach the moon, shrink it and takes it with him. He rushes to the girls’ recital but reaches way too late. He then finds a note from Vector, who has kidnapped the girls, telling him to give him the moon in exchange for them. After arriving at Vector’s lair, Gru readily makes the trade, but Vector reneges on the deal, flying off with the girls and the moon, much to Gru’s anger. Meanwhile, Dr. Nefario has discovered that the effects of the shrink ray are temporary; the bigger the object was originally, the faster it will regain its original size. As the moon starts to expand in Vector’s ship, Gru, Dr. Nefario, and the minions pull off a daring mid-air rescue of the girls just as the moon explodes out of Vector’s ship and launches itself back into orbit, with Vector trapped on it forever. Gru officially adopts the girls and treats them as his daughters, writing them a bedtime storybook framed around his own experience. The film ends with the girls performing their own ballet recital for Gru, Marlena, Dr. Nefario, and the minions. The end!

Funny, cute and a must watch with your kids, nephews/nieces or much smaller cousins. It’s fun for adults too. But why did they make Vector resemble Bill Gates? 9 outta 10!

Gemma shows Tara how an old lady handles her anger. With nearly every SAMCRO member behind bars, the club must make new alliances in prison to survive. ATF Agent June Stahl uses this imprisonment to test Clay and Jax’s relationship.

And complicating matters further, Georgie Caruso’s thugs attack Luanne’s studio. Meanwhile, Clay comes to an agreement with Elliott Oswald (Patrick St. Esprit); and Chibs’ estranged wife, Fiona, shows up at his hospital bedside. When SAMCRO’s adult-film business becomes a hindrance to the club, Clay seizes the opportunity to revive the gun-running cartel. Deep in emotional turmoil,¬†Opie¬†seeks both revenge and reconciliation. The entire SAMCRO family goes on lockdown inside the clubhouse as Jax and Clay prepare to battle the League. A.J. Weston learns the truth about Ethan Zobelle’s business dealings in Charming. Applying what she has learned from Gemma, Tara ensures her position at St. Thomas Hospital. As SAMCRO attempts to rid Charming of Ethan Zobelle and the League permanently, familiar faces present new challenges. Stahl kills the IRA leader in California Jimmy’s son Eddie but frames it on Gemma who had followed Zobel’s daughter, and Eddie’s lover, to his house. So as Stahl radios the news that Gemma has killed Eddie, Jimmy is furious and steals Jax’s son Able killing Halfsack in the process and tying up Tara.

The X-Files : Season 9

So we come to the 9th and final season of The X-Files, one of the greatest & most popular tv shows of all time – that lost it’s way due to various reasons during the last couple of seasons. It looked like most of the writing crew, the producers, Gillian Anderson & Chris Carter himself were losing interest and wanted to move on. Therefore the final season especially looks like a half-hearted attempt at times. Which is not fair on Robert Patrick and newest regular cast member Annabeth Gish- both of whom deserved much better. David Duchovny, the heart of the show, doesn’t show up until the final 2 episodes of the season. However creator¬†Chris Carter¬†believed that the show could continue for another ten years with new leads, and the opening credits were accordingly redesigned again.

After what happened during the season finale of season eight,¬†Fox Mulder goes into hiding. Dana Scully is again re-assigned to the¬†FBI Academy¬†and¬†Monica Reyes becomes¬†John Doggett’s new FBI partner at the¬†X-Files office. Dogget begins his investigation of Deputy Director¬†Alvin Kersh¬†(James Pickens Jr.) and search for¬†Fox Mulder. Doggett asks Scully for help on a case involving an EPA official, Carl Wormus, who died after his car was forced off a bridge by a woman he picked up. Doggett and Walter Skinner travel to a reclamation plant, to find any links between Wormus’ work and death. After doing an illegal autopsy on Wormus,¬†Alvin Kersh sends Brad Follmer¬†(Cary Elwes) to locate Doggett. The investigation at the reclamation plant leads to an unknown woman, whose identity is later found to be¬†Shannon McMahon¬†(Lucy Lawless), one of Doggett’s former Marine associates. She reveals to Doggett that she is a “Super Soldier”. This leads them to a clandestine laboratory where a secret experiment is taking place on board on a naval ship. They later find connections with the experiments on the ship to Scully’s child,¬†William. With¬†Dana Scully reassigned to the Quantico Training Academy, Doggett and Reyes investigate their first¬†X-File¬†together ‚Äď a series of satanic ritual murders.

A vicious murderer threatens Doggett and Reyes and then vanishes. Doggett is shot and Follmer discovers that Reyes’ gun was used. This episodes uses the concepts of alternative universes. Scully, Doggett and Reyes investigate when a teenager dies while performing a daredevil feat for a television show, but his death is soon revealed to be caused by a disturbing family secret. Scully is hopeful about reuniting with Mulder when a complete stranger offers new information about what drove him into hiding. Yet her trust in the stranger may place Mulder in even more danger. The tagline of this episode is “They’re Watching.” With no knowledge of his identity or his past, Doggett is found wandering a dusty¬†Mexican¬†town. While he struggles to piece together his memory, he finds himself embroiled in a smuggling plot. Across the border Scully and Reyes attempt to find him. Reyes takes the lead while investigating an X-File case surrounding a man found skinned alive. When she discovers that he had visions of a similar thing, she calls on Scully‚Äôs expertise to help with the investigation. When rubbings from the spaceship resurface, the FBI hides its investigation from the X-Files. Meanwhile, Scully is forced to take drastic measures when she discovers a threat to William. Distrustful of both Skinner and Follmer, Scully circumvents the FBI’s investigation into William’s kidnapping and performs her own, assisted by Reyes and¬†The Lone Gunmen. Awakening in a surreal hospital – which a companion believes to be Death’s Waiting Room – after being hit by a car, a comatose Reyes struggles to wake herself up before her¬†organ donor¬†card is acted upon.

Doggett is determined to find an error in the DNA evidence that freed the convicted “Screwdriver Killer”, whom he nearly caught in the act 13 years earlier. In the race to catch a serial killer, Scully and Reyes find themselves relying on¬†numerology, their powers of deduction, and a mysterious, card-playing stranger. Special agent¬†Leyla Harrison takes Reyes and Doggett on a drive into the mountains after a woman stabs herself repeatedly and her widowed husband refuses to let anyone see their son.¬†When¬†Morris Fletcher¬†approaches the agents with information related to the “Super Soldiers”, they turn to The Lone Gunmen. But the Gunmen are already knee-deep in a bio-terrorist’s plot which has links to the mysterious¬†Yves Adele Harlow. Doggett finds a strange, disfigured man in the X-Files office and, on a whim of Scully’s, they test his DNA. The test reveals him to have the same pattern as Mulder. The disfigured man sticks a needle into William, which the other agents believe to be a virus of some kind, but is later revealed to be a cure for William’s powers. The unnamed man is later unveiled to be¬†Jeffrey Spender¬†(Chris Owens), Mulder’s half-brother.The surprising answers they find become even more surprising when William’s life is put on the line. When one of Scully‚Äôs students displays an inordinate ability to profile serial killers, his insights reopen the murder case of Doggett‚Äôs son, Luke. Doggett, Reyes, Scully and Skinner stumble on to a bizarre murder case where the main suspect is Oliver Martin, a man with an unusual obsession with¬†The Brady Bunch.

Mulder returns from hiding to only be discovered looking for classified information at an army base and, after allegedly killing an apparently indestructible “Super Soldier”, he is placed on trial to defend the¬†X-Files¬†and himself. But with the help of Kersh, Scully, Reyes, Doggett, Spender,¬†Marita Covarrubias¬†(Laurie Holden) and Gibson Praise¬†(Jeff Gulka), Mulder breaks out. Mulder and Scully travel to¬†New Mexico¬†to find an old “wise man”, who is later revealed to be the “Cigarette Smoking Man” (William B. Davis). The Smoking Man is later killed by commands from¬†Knowle Rohrer¬†(Adam Baldwin). The series concludes with Skinner attempting to contact Kersh who has been forced to close down the X-Files. Mulder and Scully travel to New Mexico where¬†Black helicopters¬†destroy an¬†Anasazi¬†cliff dwelling ruin along with the¬†Cigarette Smoking Man. Doggett and Reyes are last seen driving off into the desert after aiding Mulder and Scully, who are now on the run from the FBI and are last seen together in a motel room facing an uncertain future.

The season is the most infuriating of the lot. The end of the series the characters basically blow up the Christian myth, creationism and all the Bible stuff – they prove that aliens were responsible for creating us. And yet Mulder & Scully smile at the end holding onto the last grasps of faith – a cross – ¬†they speak to us as part of something greater than us‚ÄĒgreater than any alien force. And if you and I are powerless now, I want to believe that if we listen to what’s speaking, it can give us the power to save ourselves.” Nonsense. This show was great but it ended up feeling like a ruins of it’s past glory by mixing religious drivel into it. Good night to the X-Files!

New Zealand Finally Names North & South Islands

New Zealand’s two main island have been known unofficially as North & South island for 200 years and never been officially named due to a clerical oversight. The New Zealand Geographic Board said the names had appeared on maps since European settlement began in the early 1800s but had never been formally recognized. After public consultations, the board is now proposing two names each for the islands, one in English and one in the indigenous Maori language.

The English version will be the widely used North and South Islands. The Maori names put forward by the board are Te Waipounamu ‚ÄĒ meaning rivers of green stone ‚ÄĒ for the South Island and Te Ika-a-Maui ‚ÄĒ the fish of Maui (a Maori god) ‚ÄĒ for the North. The board said both the English and Maori names will be able to be used on official documents and maps. The change is expected to be formally adopted later this year.

I’m thinking that the Kiwis could actually do much better than plain & dull old “North island” & “South island”. You have the perfect beautiful names in Maori and you could use their English translation to give the island new names. Call them Maui’s Fish Island & Green Stone Island for North & South respectively. They sound so much more elegant than just North & South. Come on New Zealand!

Total Recall (2012)

Total Recall is so fresh in my memory, despite the movie being 23 years old. It is a popular, successful science fiction movie with Arnie at his peak. Why then would anyone want to remake the movie? Not reboot but remake the same story with some changes here and there and updating the special effects which is 22 years old! The last reason is the only one that makes sense to me after watching the movie this rainy Saturday afternoon. While I am impressed by the awesome special effects, the movie as a whole doesn’t do much to improve on the original story wise. It offers nothing new. Directed by¬†Len Wiseman¬†and written by¬†Mark Bomback,¬† James Vanderbilt, and¬†Kurt Wimmer the movie stars¬†Colin Farrell,¬†Kate Beckinsale,¬†Jessica Biel,¬† Bryan Cranston, Bokeem Woodbine. John Cho, Ethan Hawke and¬†Bill Nighy have minor appearances.

If you have seen the original movie, except for the fact that we don’t see Mars anywhere, the movie is about the same. It’s like looking at fraternal twins; yeah there are some changes to the whole package but you see the resemblance. In a dystopian future after chemical warfare devastate earth only two habitable lands remain – the United Federation of Britain and the Colony (Australia). Many residents of the Colony travel to the UFB to work in their factories via “the Fall”, a gravity elevator, which travels through the Earth. A Resistance operating in the UFB seeks to improve life in the Colony. he film centers upon an ordinary factory worker who accidentally discovers that his current life is a fabrication predicated upon false memories implanted into his brain by the government. Ensuing events leave no room for doubt that his true identity is that of a highly-trained¬†secret agent. He then follows a trail of clues to gradually recover more suppressed memories and reassumes his original vocation with renewed dedication.

So like I said earlier the special effects and sets are awesome. I really like the overall look of the film. The action sequences are also extremely well done. Jessica Biel & Kate Beckinsale – yum double treat! You get, new for the story, robotic soldiers which look mean and awesome. The head villain Chancellor Vilos Cohaagen, played by Bryan Cranston, is unconvincing in his evilness and also him fighting with Doug Quaid/Carl Hauser looks like a huge mismatch. The Michael Ironside character is hugely missed in this film and his absence makes Beckinsale’s Lori have to play faking wife and assassin at the same time, which she does well enough but the absence of an Ironside is felt. Which brings me to the choice of lead – Ethan Hawke has a cameo as Quias/Hauser before plastic surgery changed him to look like the movie’s hero Colin Farrell. I just can’t stand him and his acting and the only reason I watched this movie is because of the remake factor. He is a poor substitute for Arnold Schwarzenegger (who can barely act but is a physical presence). I read that Michael Fassbender was on the sort list to play the role and felt he would have done a much better job. But then anyone for me would have done a better job than Farrell.

7 outta 10!

RIP Michael Ansara

Usually the “Recent Deaths” section of Wikipedia is something that I check on a daily basis but somehow I missed this one. Actor Michael Ansara, a busy and widely recognizable character actor who was best known for portraying American Indians and later a Klingon in three different ‚ÄúStar Trek‚ÄĚ series, died on Wednesday at his home in Calabasas, California. Ansara was born in a small village in¬†Syria, and his family emigrated to the United States when he was two years old, initially living in Massachusetts before settling in California.¬†He originally wanted to be a physician but developed a passion for becoming a performer after he began taking acting classes to overcome his shyness.

During the 1950s, Ansara appeared in several episodes of¬†Alfred Hitchcock Presents and as a villain in Abbott & Costello Meet The Mummy. It was the popular TV series¬†Broken Arrow¬†(1956), wherein he played the lead role of¬†Cochise, that raised Ansara’s profile and made him a household name. While making the series, the¬†20th Century-Fox¬†publicity department arranged a date between Ansara and actress¬†Barbara Eden. The two later married and Ansara guest starred on Eden’s¬†I Dream of Jeannie series as the Blue Djinn, who had imprisoned Jeannie in a bottle. He also played¬†King Kamehameha¬†in the Jeannie episode “The Battle of Waikiki” and in the final season he played Major Biff Jellico in another episode. Michael Ansara and Barbara Eden divorced in 1974. The couple had one son together, actor¬†Matthew Ansara, who died on June 25, 2001, of a¬†heroin¬†overdose.

Ansara starred in his own ABC-TV series,¬†Law of the Plainsman¬†(1959‚Äď60) as an Apache Indian named¬†Sam Buckhart¬†who had been appointed as a U.S.¬†Marshal. He played Judas in The Robe, Miguel Alvarez in the film¬†Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and in the Elvis Presley movie Harum Scarum. In 1976, he starred in the movie¬†Mohammad, Messenger of God¬†(also titled¬†The Message), about the origin of Islam and the message of prophet Mohammad. He also played Killer Kane in in the 1979-1980 season of¬†Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. However he will forever be known in Star Trek & science fiction loreas one of the original Klingons, Kang.¬† Ansara is one of seven actors to play the same character (in his case the Klingon commander¬†Kang) on three different¬†Star Trek¬†TV series¬†‚Äď the original series (Day of the Dove),¬†Deep Space Nine (Blood Oath) and¬†Voyager¬†(Flashback). Ansara also played¬†Lwaxana Troi’s husband Jeyal on the¬†Deep Space Nine¬†episode, “The Muse”.

He was married 3 times; to Jean Byron, Eden and he married Beverly Kushida in 1977. On June 25, 2001, his son Matthew died from a drug overdose in Monrovia, California. Ansara lately resided in Calabasas, California and died after a long illness.

Birthday Celebratory Lunch

Wanting to just go out and have some fun I met my cousin Sujith at a coffeeshop at around 11:45 for some coffee and we decided that we would go to Golden dragon for some birthday celebratory lunch. While we downed a couple of vodkas we had the following:

Crispy pork in oyster sauce

Shredded crispy beef

Main course was:

Dragon chicken, dragon prawns & Thai fried rice for me. He had Ribbon garlic noodles with the dragon chicken & prawns.

After 3 hours sitting at the restaurant we then headed to have some ice cream sundaes. Mine was Black forest and he had the Rocky road!

Happy 37th Birthday To Me

Ah birthdays. What are they good for? A reminder of the deadly passing of time that you are unable to do anything about – stop, reverse or even slow down! A reminder to party like there’s no tomorrow because you are slowly dying!

Or you can be grateful for another 365 years of live on this planet and give a toast to the previous years that have gone by. The highs & the lows, the good & the bad, the achievements, the failures, the disappointments, the pleasant & no so pleasant surprises and the loves and losses and even the hates! This is a day for reflection and inner search for those few strands of positive things that have made a difference in your life and hopefully, the things that you did that meant something to others.

I won’t lie to you, I hate being reminded of my age. I want to be younger. Damn it I feel younger but maybe I don’t look younger and I certainly cannot act as if I am young! In 3 years it’s the big 4 0! The dreaded farty forty! That’s just around the corner. And what have I done to enjoy four decades of existence? Nothing – not a thing! I have so much more to do, so much much more things to take care of. Damn!

Happy birthday Rosh.

Movie Based On My Life

mindbump suggested by Lord I Want To Be Whole

“If a movie was made about your life what would the name of the movie be? What genre of movie would it be, comedy, horror, drama, romantic? Who would play your character? Who would be your romantic lead?

This encourages readers to apply this question to themselves!”

Aha! A movie about my life. What kind of genre would be it if someone in the unlikely event found financing for such a venture? Well it would have to be a movie like no other – it would be equal parts of drama, romance, supernatural comedy and a wee bit of science fiction with some action and maybe some explicit language. And plenty of nude scenes with realistic sex scenes!! Heavy on the last one. Maybe even sword & sorcery :)

But it will ultimately be one of horror & tragedy, a cry fest. I dunno that’s how I feel like right. No one, no actor could ever do my role justice. No actor could ever fill my shoes so I would have to do that myself. Now the babes, the romantic leads. I will have to saw that off the top of my head I will have to say the top 11 actresses to play the women would be:

  • Katee Sackoff
  • Amanda Tapping
  • Virginia Madsen
  • Rhona Mitra
  • Toni Collette
  • Bellamy Young
  • Melissa Archer
  • Maxim Roy
  • Sonya Walger
  • Jeri Ryan
  • Julia Benson

I Hate Growing Older

Growing older sucks & it blows. The changes in one’s appearance is obvious but it’s also the inner squeaks and groans that make you more aware of the passing of time. It takes longer for me to wake up from sleep. I can’t stay up late at night as much as I used to be able to do. Injuries take longer to heal. And afternoon naps, which I used to hate, feel so much like a good thing and a necessity on some days. And where I used to take cold or mostly cool showers all the time, nowadays I need hot water for my baths & showers especially when it rains and the weather is a lot cooler.

My beard grows back so much quicker. And my beard, which started greying two years ago, a couple of months after I turned 35 is now 50% grey. Just above my sideburns I’ve noticed a couple of strands of grey hair as well. And don’t get me started on baldness. I started having issues when I was 26 and now it’s bad. But then male pattern baldness has been rampant in my mother’s side of the family and I blame the genes! There’s no stopping the receding hairline unless I go for some treatment or wear a wig or something like that.

But mostly as I grow older the regrets, mistakes, transgressions and bad choices keep screaming back to haunt me. I wish I could go and undo a few, completely edit some others and delete some from my history altogether. Time machines not having been invented, this but a pipe dream. Sigh! I hate reality sometimes!
