Of all the technologies that have gone extinct in your lifetime, which one do you miss the most?
Hmmm, I’ve never really thought about it much. I really do like the more recent type of technologies and think that they save more space, are smarter and more efficient that the things we have had before. Let’s look at a few things that I used to own earlier and do not use anymore.
Walkmans, cassette tapes, tape recorders, stereo systems, Atari video games, old tv sets, classic old style rotary telephones, VHS, VCRs, pagers. I’ve had all of these at one point or the other in my life. I have bought and used so many Walkmans (thank you Sony) in my life; I’ve even lost count. Bus rides, train rides, plane rides, long car rides – all with the enjoyment of a Walkman with freshly charged batteries and my favourite music on cassettes. We’ve used tape recorders to record music, sometimes even ourselves doing funny little skits. And man for a few years we had so much fun enjoying hours of games on our old Atari system.
If you show kids below the age of 20 years an old style rotary phone and tell them that you used to use this to call people or receive calls, they’d think that you were from the Jurassic age! But yes we had a few over the years. And old tv sets, ones without remotes and with remotes. And we watches our movies on VHS which we played on the VCRs. And yes for a couple of years I had a pager, one of the cute, sleek and smallest models from Motorola. This was ofcourse well before I got a cell phone and when cell phone rates were so high in India and you were charged for incoming as well as outgoing calls (1997-99). I do miss that pager!
Otherwise, I don’t care. We have much better technology that has replaced all of these things. But I do wish I could have a fancy and classy, elegant old style rotary phone plugged in. Mainly just for show and to freak out young people!
