Fireball Seen In The Kerala Nightsky

It was a scene from a science-fiction movie last night. As I left my apartment building at 9:45 pm last night to get to Kacheripady junction and make my way over to the office, I saw a bright light, mostly white light, in the sky. I looked up as it faded away and couldn’t figure out what the heck it was. There are a couple of automobile garages / workshops near my building and I just figured that it was some work going on in there with torches and stuff. Even though it shouldn’t have light up the night sky like that. But using that as an explanation and because I wanted to hurry to the junction, I shrugged it outta my mind.

However it wasn’t just me who saw it and there was panic across the city and state. The sighting of suspected fireball-like phenomenon, reportedly accompanied with booming sound in some cases, triggered panic across the city and its suburbs on Friday night. As news spread like wildfire, people came out of their homes in droves in many places with their eyes cast towards the sky. Similar sightings were reported from many parts of the city such as Vyttila, Kakkanad, Vypeen, Palarivattom, and Kathrikkadavu and even from suburbs such as Paravur, Kizhakkambalam, Mazhuvannoor, Kolancherry and Fort Kochi. It was by around 10: 30 pm that the various media houses, police and the fire stations in the city started receiving calls from in and around Ernakulam informing them about some outlandish activity in the sky. Social media too was abuzz with reports about the sighting.

People who witnessed the unnatural event were gripped in fear as they thought it to have hit the ground. The fireball left behind an orange trail as it descended. According to reports it must be debris of meteor disintegrating as it entered the earth’s atmosphere. Another possible explanation is junk debris from an old Chinese rocket.

But we all know that it is a cover up – it is the beginning to the first wave of an alien invasion! Save yourselves :P

RIP Leonard Nimoy

It will never be the same again. American actor, film director, poet, singer and photographer and the man who was the original – and for many of us the only Spock – Leonard Nimoy has passed away. He was 83 years old. His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Mr. Nimoy announced last year that he had the disease, attributing it to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week.

Nimoy was born to Jewish immigrant parents in Boston, Massachusetts. He began his career in his early twenties, teaching acting classes in Hollywood and making minor film and television appearances through the 1950s, as well as playing the title role in Kid Monk Baroni. Foreshadowing his fame as a semi-alien, he played Narab, one of three Martian invaders in the 1952 movie serial Zombies of the Stratosphere. After the original Star Trek series, Nimoy starred in Mission: Impossible for two seasons, hosted the documentary series In Search of..., narrated Civilization IV, and made several well-received stage appearances. He also had a recurring role in the science fiction series Fringe. He frequently performed onstage, notably as Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.” His poetry was voluminous, and he published books of his photography. In 1978, Nimoy played Dr. David Kibner in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. He also did occasional work as a voice actor in animated feature films, including the character of Galvatron in The Transformers: The Movie in 1986.

From 1982 to 1987 Nimoy hosted a children’s educational show Standby: Lights, Camera, Action on Nickelodeon. Nimoy lent his voice as narrator to the 1994 IMAX documentary film, Destiny in Space, showcasing film-footage of space from nine Space Shuttle missions over four years time. In 1994, Nimoy performed as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in The Pagemaster. In 1998, he had a leading role as Mustapha Mond in the made-for-television production of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Nimoy provided the voice of Spock as a guest star in a Season 5 episode of the CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. The episode is titled “The Transporter Malfunction” and aired on March 29, 2012, and was frequently mentioned by several of the main characters (especially Sheldon Cooper, who idolized Nimoy).

During and following Star Trek, Nimoy also released five albums of musical vocal recordings on Dot Records. On his final three albums, he sings popular folk songs of the era and cover versions of popular songs, such as “Proud Mary” and Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line“. There are also several songs on the later albums that were written or co-written by Nimoy.

In 1965, he made his first appearance in the rejected Star Trek pilot The Cage, and as a changed character would go on to play the character of the half-Vulcan, half-human Mr. Spock for 3 seasons of Star Trek : The Original Series until 1969, followed by eight feature films (from 1979 to 2013) and guest slots in the various spin-off series. The character of Spock has had a significant cultural impact and garnered Nimoy three Emmy Award nominations; TV Guide named Spock one of the 50 greatest TV characters. Nimoy’s fame as Spock was such that both of his autobiographies, I Am Not Spock (1975) and I Am Spock (1995), were written from the viewpoint of sharing his existence with the character.

And now he is gone. The Star Trek world weeps for the loss of a great person and actor.

Slaves And Their MASTER!

What Nicknames Have You Ever Gotten or Given?

My family has always been into giving nicknames to each other. I was no exception in that I have had a couple that has stuck around for a while. When I was 11 years old, my family including uncles, aunts and cousins took a month long trip through parts of South India on a sight seeing trip. When we made it to Kanyakumari, right at the end of India, we had to take a ferry to see the island on which there is a statue of Swami Vivekananda. Now everyone needed help to climb aboard the ferry and there were two men who were assisting people to get on board. But little roly poly, 11 year old me jumped on board and when we came back I did the same. So one of the guys said “Master chaddiyello!” meaning master – as in a young boy – has jumped!

My eldest cousin brother heard that and he started calling me “Master” and the name stuck. Pretty soon all my cousins were calling me that with a few “Masterjis” from the younger ones for added pleasure. Most of my aunts & uncles also acknowledged the nickname. As I became a teenager the guys would joke that “Master” was short for “Master of Masturbation” and the teasing would continue for ages. Till this day, 27 years later the name has not died and I am still Master for a few of my cousins. I doubt if it will ever get die out and I’m pretty sure that when I am like 90 years old I will still hear plenty of calls of “Master”. That will find itself into my obituary as well; lucky I won’t have a headstone!

Arsenal 1 Monaco 3

It was one of the worst performances in Europe that I have ever seen the Gunners play out and it is a shame for anyone and everyone associated with this great club. Arsenal’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2010 suffered a stunning blow as they slumped to a shock 3-1 home defeat by Monaco. The Gunners looked to have been handed a favourable draw but a display that plumbed the depths of incompetence and naivety leaves them facing a last-16 exit once more. Monaco, resilient at the back and capable of punishing Arsenal’s shoddy defence, took the lead in the first half through Geoffrey Kondogbia’s deflected shot.

To add insult to injury, former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov added the second just after the break. There was even time for Arsenal to cast away the lifeline substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s stoppage-time goal had given them as they were caught hopelessly on the counter once more as Yannick Ferreira Carrasco added a third goal. This stage has become Arsenal’s perennial stumbling block but Wenger would have had high hopes of clearing the hurdle against his former club, even though they had lost only once in their last 17 games. But Arsenal were devoid of ideas and when they did create chances they fell to the hapless, and on this night hopeless, Olivier Giroud, who missed every one that came his way. Welbeck conceded possession and as Joao Moutinho moved forward he found the impressive Kondogbia, whose 25-yard shot took a decisive deflection off Per Mertesacker to leave keeper David Ospina helpless.

Giroud had been presented with Arsenal’s best opportunities but time and again the striker failed to hit the target. In the first half he scooped Hector Bellerin’s cross over then he turned Alexis Sanchez’s cross wide from six yards. From their own attack, Mertesacker in particular deserted his defensive post leaving Anthony Martial free to set up the unmarked Berbatov, who steadied himself before thumping a finish high past Ospina. Giroud’s night got worse when he somehow tapped a simple finish over the top after keeper Danijel Subasic fumbled Sanchez’s shot – and with the fury of Arsenal’s fans ringing in his ears, it was a merciful release when he was replaced by Theo Walcott on the hour. As Emirates Stadium emptied, Oxlade-Chamberlain, on for Francis Coquelin, curled in a goal from 20 yards that at least offered Arsenal some sort of hope for the second leg.

It was typical of how poor they were, however, that they somehow found themselves caught upfield once more to allow the speedy Ferreira-Carrasco to race clear and beat Ospina for what could be the decisive blow. So now, barring a miraculous comeback, Arsenal are all but out of the Champions League. They need to win by a 3 goal margin, hopefully to bang in 3 and keep a clean sheet, which seems not possible going by this performance. They were at home and they couldn’t get up for it in the Champions League with a place in the quarter-finals at stake and they were a playing against a team, which on paper and only on paper, were a much weaker side. Arsenal’s attack was toothless and their defense was in shambles. And that manager has no clue as to how to fix it!

My Wallet Feels Lighter But Better

B-YYFnXIEAAE4E1.jpg large

That pile of paper bills and other junk including some business cards of people I haven’t spoken to, or needed to speak to in a long time, and some old, Debit cards of long deactivated bank accounts (salaried accounts from former jobs) is what was in my wallet. No wonder the poor thing was so stuffed and bent outta shape.

The wallet was one of my birthday presents from back in 2010 gifted to me along with a large portrait by the members of my team back in the office that I worked in at the time. I only started using in sometime in 2011 though, since I already had a good wallet that I had just bought a few months prior to getting the gift. And this wallet, which is really good and by far my favourite wallet that I have ever owned, has been bent outta shape as the extra papers cause it puff out and look way fatter than it should be (I am not rich).

So I dumped out all the bills, receipts and stuff that I didn’t need anymore, cut up the old debit cards and threw out the business cards which I do not need. And now the wallet looks and feels so much better.

Sleep, You Elusive Creature

Well it’s been a hectic three days. After the lull of a nice weekend which was really good, I’ve barely had much sleep since then. I went to bed late on Sunday night, or should I say Monday morning, to adjust to the fact that I will be working a late night shift of 11:30pm – 8:30 am for this week. I fully expected to sleep on Monday afternoon and get to work late that evening.

But I had some news for me on Monday afternoon; due to some requirement I went in early – 5 hours early to be specific – and 14 hours early I staggered out into the light. But I couldn’t sleep as much as I would have liked to, just barely getting 5 hours in. Tuesday I went for work at 11 pm and came out at 8:30 this morning but I had to come in to work at 4:30pm for a client meeting. Again barely 4.5 hours or so is what I actually managed in terms of sleep.

The flip side is I got off work early tonight and will be home by 12am. I can relax at home for a few hours and watch some tv shows. Its a small consolation.

Loneliness Is A Lover Who Refuses To Break Up With Me

When was the last time you felt really, truly lonely?

All the time. All the goddamn fucking time! I can feel incredibly lonely and all alone when I am with a group of people or in a crowd of people! It depends on the company that you are with at the time. At the same time being with a single friend or two can make all the difference in the world. You won’t be alone at all and infact loneliness is the furthermost thing away from your mind.

I think it’s also because I have very different things that are important to me and that I hold close to my heart that most other people may not and because my interests and likes are different from the general public, only those who know me well and who understand me can share atleast some of that interests. I will feel comfortable in sharing my view points with them. If not then I will be silent or stick to and hence camaraderie will not be possible. This can make me feel like I am alone in the group.

As a 38 year old man who is unmarried and whose love life has been dead for several years and who has almost resigned himself to live out the rest of is life knowing that he will never know love again and be married and/or having children, that’s a lonely path to look forward to. Not having that life companion is hard, especially me who longs for having the love of his life be with him. Long lonely nights without a woman to hold on to is tough but that’s the way it looks like. I keep holding on, hoping that I am wrong and that things will change. But in my heart I know that it’s the bachelor for life for me.

RIP Ben Woolf

American actor Ben Woolf, who was hospitalized after being hit on the head by a speeding car on Feb 19, died last night after he suffered a massive stroke. Woolf recently appeared as the character “Meep” in season 4 of American Horror Story. He was just 34 years old.

Woolf was struck in the head by the side mirror of a passing car at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Gramercy Place in Los Angeles, an LAPD spokesperson told reporters on Feb. 20. The driver remained at the scene, and Woolf was transported to a nearby hospital. Woolf died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, publicist Zack Teperman said. Woolf’s family was at his side.

Plotting The Works

You’re given a plot of land and have the financial resources to do what you please. What’s the plan?

Hmmm, I’ve always wanted to own my own place of business. Like a bar or restaurant. Maybe a pizzeria! Roshan’s Pizza Palace! A lot of variations of the much loved pizza with originality and creativity. A bar would be great with lots of imported beer on tap as well as amazing brands of liquor.

I would also like to start something that deals with dogs & cats and their care. How about something to do with music? Like a large guitar store with guitars, amps and pedals and all the other gizmos to do with guitars. A music aficionado’s paradise, where they can come and look at stuff for hours before they make purchases, attends clinics and seminars and make contacts with musicians and producers. That would be cool.

Or even a music recording studio. For upcoming & independent rock bands. Nice!

Coma (1978)

Based on the 1977 Robin Cook novel of the same name and directed by Michael Crichton, Coma is a 1978 medical thriller starring Genevieve Bujold, Michael Douglas, Elizabeth Ashley, Richard Widmark, and Rip Torn (who I didn’t even recognize until the end). Also starring in small roles are pre-fame Ed Harris & Tom Sellek.

Dr. Susan Wheeler, who is having trouble in her relationship with fellow resident Dr. Mark Bellows, is devastated to learn that a close friend of hers, Nancy Greenley, is pronounced brain dead and ends up in a coma after minor surgery at the Boston Memorial Hospital. Susan, who works there along with Mark, decides to check up on the records and finds that over the previous year a number of other fit young people have ended up the same way. When another young & otherwise fit person suffers the same fate she investigates and finds out that all 12 cases took place in the same operation theater, OR 8, and that all the comatose bodies were taken to a remote facility named the Jefferson Institute. As she continues to investigate she runs into road blocks, seemingly from a Dr. George, Chief of Anesthesiology at Boston Memorial Hospital.

After a fun weekend with Mark she tries to enter the Jefferson but is told that tours are only conducted on Tuesdays. As she gets closer to the truth, a maintenance man, who offers to give her information, is killed by a security guard who then tries to kill Susan but she escapes from the hospital and finds out that Carbon Monoxide is being filtered through the gas tubes in OR 8. She runs to Mark’s apartment but on hearing him speak about her on the phone to someone, she panics and runs away. She goes for the tour at the institute and finds out that the Jerfferson is a front for harvesting organs to be sold to the highest bidder on the black market. Boston Memorial is in on this, purposely inducing comas in patients whose organs match those of potential buyers. She is almost caught by security but sneaks out on top of an ambulance that is delivering some organs to an airport.

Susan goes to see Dr. George Harris, the Chief of Surgery, to who she has confided her suspicions and tells him everything. However it turns out that Dr Harris is the mastermind behind this operation and he drugs her with a substance that creates a pain mimicking an appendix about to burst. He rushes her to surgery and says that he will do the operation himself. Mark meets Susan there and she manages to convince him that her life is in danger and he also hears Dr. Harris insist for OR 8. Mark stops the carbon monoxide from entering the gas tubes and takes Susan away after her operation is shown to not have an inflamed appendix. The two lovers have Dr. Harris exposed and the final scene is of him waiting to be escorted by two police officers.

It has some tense moments and the acting is top notch. The movie itself is a bit dull in places and I hope they do remake it someday with more excitement. 8 outta 10!

First Credit Card Ever

So I now have a credit card in my name – for the very first time at the age of 38! Yes I know that it is quite late for someone to have his first credit card but it isn’t the same in a country like India as it is for someone living in say Germany or Canada or the UK. You can go about your life without a credit card and not worry about things and I was of that same mentality until a few years ago.

I was often scared of signing up for one but I wasn’t eligible for one (without keeping a substantial deposit since I was in a lower pay grade until 2007) anyways for most of my life. I never even imagined that I would want one until sometime in 2008 when a former colleague came to my them place of employment and since he was working for a bank at that time, asked some of us if we wanted to apply for a credit card and I thought “Why not?”. Turns out that I got rejected, not because of my pay grade, but my line of work (BPO/Call centers) were blacklisted for anyone not an AM or above and I hadn’t gotten my AM papers yet. I was pissed off and when I got my AM papers I didn’t apply for a credit card.

Later in 2012 I really wanted to get a credit card and I applied for one with ICICI but I had the worst ever service from them and was finally denied one because of some goof up in the information that the local manager here provided me. I was so angry with them and almost lost my temper but I just about managed to keep things in check. Now with my new job in a better company I was an almost shoe-in to get a credit card with HDFC, with whom I also have a new bank account, and after 45 days and post some rigourous background check, they approved my application and I got the card yesterday and today I went to get the PIN changed. Finally, I have one in my name and this feels good. Honestly, I am mostly gonna use it for some online purchases and perhaps to buy a laptop and a new mobile on EMI.
