Back To An Old Watering Hole

It was like going home. Going home to a home that you haven’t seen in a long while. My cousin Sujith & I went back to Velocity Beer & Wine parlour / restaurant which used to be Velocity bar, a favourite watering hole from 2007-2013. I hadn’t been there in a long time indeed.

IMG_20151031_145630

The decor is still the same but I don’t see why they should change it much. The place looks as good as ever.

IMG_20151031_145846

As some of you may remember we’ve had a big problem for drink lovers in the state what with the stupid decision of our moronic government to ban bars in the state. Hence we have no more bars, other than those of the 5 star variety and they are very few in number as well as very expensive for the likes of yours truly. Most of the 2 & 3 star bars were close with just a few 3 star ones becoming beer & wine parlours joining the 4 star bars that also converted and added food to their menu.

IMG_20151031_150238

Velocity, a 3 star bar but of a really good standard, was one of the early victims when they had to close down and then lost their license. They were able to renew their license as their standards were better than most and hence were allowed to re-open as a beer & wine parlous plus restaurant. The same owners also have a family restaurant (no beer or wine served there) right next door. But Velocity did not reopen their doors immediately as they wanted to do a lot of renovation and hence it was closed for even longer.

IMG_20151031_151327

The couple of times I have tried to go there we saw that they were closed so I moved on to other beer parlours like Couchyn, which became my go to place. Also I started relying on buying beer (along with vodka and rum) from the BEvcos and drinking at home. Hence I haven’t been to Velocity since mid 2013! Which is huge!

IMG_20151031_152446

Today my cousin and I walked in and were greeted like returning family. We ordered some Pork Pepper Fry (bad idea, the pork was good but it was so peppery and spicy) and Chicken 65. The latter was delicious as ever. And ofcourse we had a couple of beers. Heineken first and then Carlsberg. We sat there for a good 2 hours or so and enjoyed a nice afternoon. By 4:30 pm we had to leave, with promises to come back soon.

IMG_20151031_163609

And so I have my watering hole back again. No alcohol but it still is something. I like the place and it’s a fun spot to kick back with some beers and good food and relax. Cheers!

Inner Space

The 1987 scifi comedy Inner Space is a film directed by Joe Dante and produced by Michael Finnell. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer. The film was inspired by the 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage. It stars Dennis Quaid, Martin Short and Meg Ryan, with Robert Picardo and Kevin McCarthy, with music composed by Jerry Goldsmith. It earned $25,893,810 of domestic gross revenue and won an Oscar. This is a film that I remember watching as a kid, probably around 1988 or 89 with my cousins.

A down on his luck Naval aviator Lt. Tuck Pendleton resigns his post after his break up with his girlfriend Lydia Maxwell, joins up as a volunteer for a secret miniaturization experiment. He is placed in a submersible pod and both are shrunk to microscopic size. They are transferred into a syringe to be injected into a rabbit, but the lab is attacked by a rival organization, led by scientist Dr. Margaret Canker, that plans to seize the experiment and steal the miniaturization technology. The supervisor of the experiment Ozzie Wexler grabs the syringe and tries to escape away from them but is caught up with at a mall by Canker’s henchmen, the cyborg Mr. Igoe, and is fatally shot. Before he dies, Wexler injects the contents of the syringe into the posterior of an unsuspecting Jack Putter a hypochondriac Safeway grocery clerk, the first person he comes into contact with. The pod with Tuck floats into Jack’s system and soon the Lt. realizes that he inside a human and not the rabbit that the experiment had planned out.

After attempts to radio the lab are unsuccessful, Tuck navigates the pod to the optic nerve and implants a camera so he is able to see what the “host” sees. Tuck makes contact by attaching another device to Jack’s inner ear, enabling him to talk to Jack, initially with embarrassing consequences. Tuck explains that the pod has only a few hours’ supply of oxygen and needs his help in order to extract him by going back to the lab. At the lab, the scientists explain to Tuck and Jack that the other group stole one of two computer chips that are vital to the process. The group’s mastermind is Victor Scrimshaw. His henchmen include Canker, Igoe, and “The Cowboy”. Kack contacts Tuck’s estranged girlfriend Lydia a reporter who has had dealings with the Cowboy. They learn that the Cowboy plans to buy the computer chip from Scrimshaw. After knocking the Cowboy unconscious using the pod’s equipment, Tuck controls the muscles of Jack’s face, altering Jack’s features so he looks identical to the Cowboy. Lydia and Jack, posing as the Cowboy, meet with Scrimshaw to steal the chip from him.

However, as they’re about to take possession of the chip, Jack’s nervousness overrides the transformation of his face, exposing the scam. Mr. Igoe captures Jack and Lydia and takes them to the lab. While imprisoned, Jack and Lydia share a kiss, which, unknown to them, transfers Tuck into Lydia’s body through their saliva. Once taken to the lab, the criminals miniaturize Igoe and inject him into Jack to locate Tuck, kill him, and obtain the other chip, which is attached to the pod. Once Igoe has been injected, Jack and Lydia escape, steal back the chip and order everyone in the lab at gunpoint into the miniaturization device, including Scrimshaw and Canker. However, not knowing how to operate it, they only manage to miniaturize everyone to 50% of the original size. Tuck, now inside Lydia, finds a growing baby and realizes that she is pregnant with his child.By going to Lydia’s eardrum and playing their song (Sam Cooke’s Cupid), he is able to alert them what has happened. Jack and Lydia kiss again to transfer Tuck back. They frantically drive back to the lab in order to enlarge Tuck, not realizing that miniature versions of Scrimshaw and Canker are hiding in the back seat.

While the villains attempt to subdue Jack and Lydia, Mr. Igoe locates Tuck and attacks him. Tuck disables Igoe’s craft and Igoe is killed after Tuck scares Jack to increase the level of gastric acid in his stomach. Igoe is killed after he falls into Jack’s stomach and is digested. Back at the lab, with only minutes of supplemental oxygen left in the pod, Jack follows Tuck’s instructions to eject the pod from his lungs by making himself sneeze. Tuck and the pod are successfully enlarged, and he is reunited with Lydia and finally gets to meet Jack in person. The film ends at Tuck and Lydia’s wedding, held at Wayfarers Chapel, where Tuck wears the chips from the experiment as cuff links. When they climb into the limousine, it is revealed that Cowboy is the driver and Scrimshaw and Canker are hiding in the trunk, inside a suitcase. Now confident and in control of his life, Jack recognizes the Cowboy and jumps into Tuck’s vintage 1967 Mustang, pursuing the limousine to rescue the newlyweds.

Although it hasn’t aged that well, the movie has it’s share of laughs and can keep you entertained on a dull weekend afternoon. I find it good enough for a 7.5 outta 10!

Fright Night

What’s the thing you’re most scared to do? What would it take to get you to do it?

Appropriately enough as Halloween is tomorrow. Well I have a deep fear of snakes and large spiders and disgusting creepy crawlies like them. Mainly huge spiders as I do not have much chance of coming up on a snake as much. But in thick bushes, nasty wastes and thick trees and stuff can lie both these creatures and I am terrified of them. I do not want to get acquainted with them at all though some non-poisonous snakes or the snakes with the venom removed can be quite beautiful and when I see people handling them, I do think it is cool. Not so much with spiders though!

I mean those things are nasty and ugly and yuck. Oh yeah Spider-man is cool and awesome and I wish I could spin webs and swing across the buildings like he does but spiders are fucking ugly and their legs are just  creepy as hell. Oh yeah and cockroaches – how I hate them! I hate them with a vengeance, I will hunt and kill any roaches that I can see. We occasionally get roaches when it rains quite a bit in here, yes even on the 7th floor, and I will get the nearest newspaper and kill the sonsofbitches and only then can I have peace of mind.

These shitty creatures are disgusting and vile and crappy as hell.

So We Have The New Laptop All Setup

Yesterday I took a sick day as I wasn’t feeling so great, with a bad cough and sinusitis, and I took that opportunity to install Windows 7 on my new Dell Vostro. I haven’t done this in a long while and I had to do it a few times before I got it right. Mostly I was having a problem with partioning the drive into the sizes that I wanted. I thought I had gotten it right but I had call someone and get the right way to do it.

IMG_20151028_171412

By afternoon though I had to stop and take rest post a late lunch as I wanted to lie down due to the effects of the cough and wheezing plus I had taken some medicine. By late evening and I started anew on the laptop and got it right this time. Most of last night and this morning was installing the applications and software that I usually use. I also needed a couple of drivers for the system as well. Then it was onto copying the various images, photos and videos from my external hard drives that I had copied onto and which were on my old laptop.

IMG_20151029_111942

That is mostly completed now and all that remains is the huge collection of Mp3s that I have. That will take some time so I might get to it only by tomorrow. Otherwise we are good to go. I am going to clean out the old Lenovo laptop and give it to my dad for his office – he and his co-worker need a spare computer for their work at the NGO they go to.

Make Like A Tree And Leave

Life is a series of beginnings and endings. We leave one job to start another; we quit cities, countries, or continents for a fresh start; we leave lovers and begin new relationships. What was the last thing you contemplated leaving? What were the pros and cons? Have you made up your mind? What will you choose?

I have contemplated a fresh start and leaving behind things many a time. Things have been bad at one time or the other and at those times I have managed to stick it out and stay put. But that doesn’t mean that I should stay here where I am for the rest of my life. I could use a fresh start, go away and start anew in another place. Meet new people, change my old ways and develop new and better ones. Make new friendships and meet interesting new people and go to interesting new places and do things that I would never usually do.

A job is usually the one that most people change and will continue to change. At one point in time I just had to get out and after 4 years and 3 months it was time for a change for me if I wanted to keep my sanity. And also my temper; though I must say that the choice was kinds made for me and it was more of do I stay and keep fighting a lost cause or start afresh. I had to choose the latter but the problem was that it was the wrong decision at that time. I wish I had more time to decide and perhaps even 3-4 months more would have made a world of difference.

Leaving city, state and country and even the continent – what can I say? I would love to move out somewhere else and Canada would be my choice. I really would love to go and live there in one of the towns or cities that I have done some research on and seen a bit off on the internet. That would be lovely. Even if I can’t leave the country, just moving somewhere else would probably do me a world of good. I dunno if that is possible but if I do get a good job opportunity then it would be great.

And I would have to be in a relationship to even consider making a change. Or a change in my case would be is to have a relationship finally with someone and have a life finally.

Mutants And Hybrids

If you were one part human, two parts something else — another animal, a plant, an inanimate object — what would the other two parts be?

Hmmm let’s see now. If I can be one part human and 2 parts something else then I will probably pick a robot and a wolf! That would be cool wouldn’t it? Bionic Werewolf! Since I’d only be 1/4th wolf I’d still look mostly human and perhaps less furry. Yet I could make a quick killling and go “awoooo” when I am on the prowl.

Or maybe part robot and part lion. Like a bionic Thundercat (hooo)! That would be cool too. Leo’s always want to be lion-ish. That would rock! I would also want a leonine mane of hair. Yes please, to replace my balding hairline. Off the top of my head these are what I can come up with.

Pride and Joy

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise to any of you who follow me on my blog, Youtube channels, Facebook or Twitter – I am a huge Trekkie! I love Star Trek – the concepts, the ideas, the philosophy, the alien cultures, the starships, the technology! Every thing about Star Trek is awesome. It might not be for everybody but it has something for everyone. Just open your mind and think about the things they want to convey with the episode stories and concepts. Therefore anything related to Trek is something that I will cherish a lot.

My growing collection of Eaglemoss’s The Official Star Trek Starship collection is my current pride & joy. It’s something that I am deeply involved in and sharing with a whole lot of like minded people and it’s something that gives me a lot of happiness personally. This is for me, this is my interest and hobby and passion all rolled into one and it is a universe that I dream about and a kind of life that I wish we were living in already, even though it’s a concept of the future. It’s what I believe the human race is capable of becoming and that it is something we should aim for.

So this is my collection, my pride & joy, at the number 15 mark. I shot this video a few weeks ago but only uploaded the video this morning but I have got 6 more ships since then. The video update will come up sometime soon.

Trick Questions

A Pulitzer-winning reporter is writing an in-depth piece — about you. What are the three questions you really hope she doesn’t ask you?

  1. What do you really think about the various gods and religions and religious people? (You don’t want to know what I keep away from blogs and Facebook posts! I have a really low opinion of that shit)
  2. What is your ultimate dream?
  3. What do you think about when you are alone?

The New Laptop is Here

So Amazon India has impressed me by delivering the laptop to me 2 days early – and on a fricking Sunday morning too!! Yes that is correct, I was out of my apartment by 11:45 am and 10 minutes later I got a confirmation SMS stating that the package was on it’s way to me and then I got a call saying that it has arrived at my apartment. That was quick. So thank you Amazon India.

IMG_20151025_152302

I was out till 3pm and once I came back home, I opened the box and took out the laptop. So it’s the Dell Vostro 3558 Corei3 version. It comes in a 15.6 inch LED Backlit Display with Truelife and HD & 4GB DDR3L 1600Mhz and a 500GB SATA Hard Drive 5400RPM (not 1TB as I had erroneously stated in the previous post). It has 1 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0 slots, a security slot and a Media Card (SD, SDHC, SDXC) slot. And this is my first computer with a chicklet style keyboard.

IMG_20151025_153213

My old Lenovo is over 5 years old and is getting on. I am gonna give it to my dad’s office so he and his coworker can use it for their purposes. Today I have spent a long time copying files and data from my Lenovo’s 500 GB drive onto two external drives and it is odd to see my laptop’s drive almost empty. That is an odd feeling looking at two drives empty of all data.

IMG_20151025_153231

Nothing lasts forever so out with the old and in with the new I guess. Especially when it comes to computers. Cheers! I still have to install Windows 7 in this so I haven’t even switched on the computer yet!

Arsenal 2 Everton 1

Arsenal went top of the Premier League for the first time since February 2014 as headers from Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny defeated Everton. After a cagey opening, the Gunners went ahead as Giroud met Mesut Ozil’s floated cross with a deft touch. Koscielny doubled the lead two minutes later from Santi Cazorla’s ball in. Ross Barkley’s deflected shot brought Everton back into it, but Romelu Lukaku wasted an excellent, if rare, chance to level as he headed against the bar. Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech denied Gerard Deulofeu late on, but the hosts also had their chances to make the scoreline more comfortable.

Everton’s miserable evening was compounded by Gareth Barry’s injury-time dismissal as he picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Kieran Gibbs. Ozil and Giroud were the scorers in Arsenal’s Champions League win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday and the two combined brilliantly to break the deadlock after an even opening half hour. But Arsenal’s fourth successive win was secured in more conventional fashion than their third. While the Gunners were penned back and starved of the ball against the Bavarians in midweek, they enjoyed 57% possession and regularly carved through Everton in an ultimately fruitless search for a third. Giroud and Ozil both hit the woodwork in the second half, with the latter sparkling with invention in a floating role behind the main striker. Ozil was ably abetted by Santi Cazorla who roamed upfield from his deep-lying position to prompt and probe as Francis Coquelin tidied behind him in midfield.

It is now 22 meetings and more than 19 years since Everton won away at Arsenal. In more recent history, Roberto Martinez’s side were fifth in the table after their win over West Brom at the end of September. Arsenal will briefly be in the #1 position until the Manchester derby on Sunday night. The Gunners have 22 points, one more than Man City who play 4th place Man United who have 19.

Jurassic World

The 4th film in the Jurassic Park movie franchise, Jurassic World is a 2015 American science fiction adventure film. It was directed and co-written by Colin Trevorrow, produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Judy Greer, Vincent D’Onofrio, B. D. Wong, Irrfan Khan & Omar Sy co-star in the film.

Set twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Jurassic World takes place on the same fictional island of Isla Nublar, off the Pacific coast of Central America, where a fully functioning dinosaur theme park has operated for ten years. The park plunges into chaos when a genetically modified dinosaur, Indominus rex, breaks loose and runs rampant across the island. Brothers Zach and Gray Mitchell are sent there to visit their aunt, Claire Dearing, the park’s operations manager. Owen Grady, who trains the park’s Velociraptors that considers him the pack alpha, is the film’s hero who joins Claire in trying to get to her nephews who go off on their own and are attacked by the dinosaur. Here are my points on the film:

  • Visually this movie is a treat and an incredible rush of excitement. The dinosaurs are life-like to watch, the effects are wonderfully done and I think everyone who watched this movie should be entertained. What is missing though is the sense of awe and amazement that the first movie gave us. The story lacked depth in it’s writing and it doesn’t really offer you much in variation other than a few “new” dinosaurs.
  • The main “villain” dino is the new attraction to the park, a genetically modified, synthetic dinosaur called Indominus rex. The dinosaur has the base genome of a Tyrannosaurus rex and the DNA of several predatory dinosaurs, including Velociraptors, as well as modern-day animals. The fact that the park’s owners and management wanted to get a more dangerous animal as an attraction by experimenting is chilling. But he gets killed finally by a T-Rex, albeit with some help from the raptors and a Mosasaurus who drags the I-rex into the lagoon, almost like Godzilla kills those two creatures in the 2014 film.
  • Speaking of the raptors, they are my favourite part of the film and everytime they were on screen I was glad. Raptors are cool. The only thing that could rival them is that dinoshark or the Mosasaurus that is so freaking awesome. He bite the head of the I-Rex and drags the creature down in the waters that seals the fate of the villain. Watching the Mosasaurus jumping from the water to catch it’s prey is just awesome.
  • The human characters with the exception of the two leads and the boys that play the nephews lack much depth in character though it is expected with the focus on the dinosaurs but that’s something that the original film managed to get. The only other character who managed to shine was Vic Hoskins the head of InGen security operations, who wants to use the raptors and the Indominus rex as weapons for war.
  • There is something for people of all ages to enjoy and the movie managed to sneak in some really effective humour that livens the mood a bit. All in all a very enjoyable film.

Jurassic World has generated over $1.6 billion in box office revenue, standing as the third highest-grossing film of all time without inflation adjustment, as well as the highest-grossing film of 2015. A sequel is scheduled for release on June 22, 2018. I’d give it an 8.5 outta 10!

And The Dreams Goes By…

I had a weird dream last night that I was in a heavily crowded junction in the city with some of my cousins when a bomb threat was discovered. The cops came and tried to defuse it but with just 60 seconds left they announced that they cudn’t defuse it in time and massive panic struck as people screamed and tried running – in vain and the place was so crowded with people.

Then the bomb went off and the whole place, huge sections of the city went up in flames as people got engulfed in the fires and buildings and cars were destroyed. I cud see the whole thing from above (even though I should be dead) and the charred remains of bodies lying everywhere. Suddenly I was in a nice comfy bed in what looked liked a lovely bedroom in a beautiful house and a beautiful woman came in with a tray of coffee and toast and eggs, apparently to wake me up with breakfast in bed and calling me “Honey, breakfast is ready. Sit with me and enjoy the morning”. And all I could think of was……

This is not my beautiful house, this is not my beautiful wife! How did I get here?

22-10-2015 Update

I’ve been tired a lot more, due to my sinusitis and sleep a lot more. Usually while doing a 4:30 pm to 1:30 am work shift and reaching home by 2:15 am, I usually wake up by around 7:30 to 8:30 am but these last few days I have been sleeping in and waking up by 9:30 or 10 am even! That is different and not what I usually do. Hence I do have less time at home before I have to shave, shower and get ready for work (the company cab comes to pick me up at around 3pm or so) and have been online less. The blog is also a bit behind because of that.

I have been skipping breakfast everyday for this week as I still feel a bit sickish because of the sinusitis (it’s getting better but it’s still there) and in the morning it is the worst. By afternoon I feel better and can have lunch but it’s only coffee till then. Usually by 8:30 pm I have dinner at the office cafeteria and that is usually the only time I really feel any hunger these days. More coffee usually sometime in the evening. But….and this is funny……I always feel like having something sweet in the night. Usually that comes up around sometime post 1am, so I get some chocolate and cream biscuits to munch on as I leave the office.

What else? Well I have 3 days off this weekend Friday being a holiday and all that, so I plan to go out for a day, maybe two, watch a few movies (been thinking about doing a trilogy marathon) and oh yeah – I finally bought my new laptop. I bought the Dell Vostro 3558 this morning, bought it online and it will be delivered to me by the 27th.
