The Haunting in Connecticut

The Haunting in Connecticut is a 2009 American psychological horror film produced by Gold Circle Films and directed by Peter Cornwell. It is supposedly based on Carmen Snedeker and her family, who were the subject of the book In a Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting (1992). The movie stars Virginia Madsen, Elias Koteas, Martin Donovan & Amanda Crew.

In 1987 Sara Campbell moves with her cancer-stricken son Matthew to a rural house in Connecticut. The long drives from their home to the hospital for his treatments being the main reason, Sara decides to take the large old house from a man renting it. The following day, Peter arrives with Matt’s brother Billy and cousins Wendy and Mary, and they choose rooms. Matt chooses the basement, where there is a mysterious door. After moving in, Matt suffers a series of visions involving an old, bearded man and corpses with symbols carved into their skin. The next day, Peter learns that the house was supposedly a funeral home; the room behind the mysterious door is a mortuary.

Matt tells another patient, Reverend Nicholas Popescu (Elias Koteas), about the visions. Nicholas advises him to find out what the spirit wants. Later, Matt finds a burned figure in his room who begins to move toward him. When the family comes home, they find a shirtless Matt with his fingers blood-covered from scratching at the wall. As the family starts to strain under the stress of Matt’s illness and his behaviour, the children find a box of photographs, which show Jonah, a young man from Matt’s visions, at a séance, emitting ectoplasm. Wendy and Matt find out that the funeral home was run by a man named Ramsey Aickman. Aickman also conducted psychic research and would host séances with Jonah as the medium. At one séance, all those attending, including Aickman, were found dead and Jonah disappeared. Nicholas theorizes that Aickman was practicing necromancy in an attempt to control the dead and bind them to the house.

That night, Nicholas finds human remains in the house and removes them. Matt awakens to find Aickman’s symbols carved into his flesh. He is taken to the hospital, where he encounters Jonah. Nicholas and Matt begin to have simultaneous visions. Everyone in the séance is burnt, after a flash of bright light. The barely alive Aickman told Jonah to get out of the house, concerned that the demonic presence will get him next. The spirit traps Jonah in the crematory, and cremates him alive. Peter and Sara learn that Matt’s cancer treatments have had no effect. They then discover that Matt has escaped the hospital. Back at the house, Nicholas leaves a message telling the family to get out of the house immediately – Jonah’s spirit was actually protecting them from the spirits. Sara goes in despite the efforts of the firemen and cradles Matt. They are brought out by the fire crew and they try to resuscitate a dying Matt. As Matt slips away, he has a vision of himself standing in the graveyard where he sees Jonah, no longer appearing burnt. He seems about to follow Jonah when he hears his mother’s voice.

He returns to his body and Jonah’s spirit leaves him. Matt’s cancer disappears, and the house was rebuilt and resold with no further reported incidents of haunting. Ofcourse! Well it isn’t a great movie just about average but then I’d watch anything with my eternal crush Virginia Madsen in it. She was quite good in the film too. So is Koteas. I’d give the film a 6.5 outta 10!

Three Coins in the Fountain

Have you ever tossed a coin or two into a fountain and made a wish? Did it come true?

I have never found a fountain anywhere I have been in several years that I could toss a coin into. The ones that I have seen are all artificial ones within building enclosed areas and hence it might be frowned upon to toss a coin into it. I mean they have that for display and ambience purposes and some dude comes in and tosses coins into it just like that. And in these times when most people have trouble getting hard cash in hand and must resort to cashless or wireless transactions!

Anyways if I did believe in such fairytales I would find me a fountain where wishes do come true and I would toss my three coins into it. For my first wish I’d wish that everyone on earth, every human, bird and animal have peace, prosperity and long life never knowing what it means to feel pain, hunger, anger, pain or suffering. For my second wish I’d get rid of religious nonsense and let humanity and humanism prevail and everyone would be mindful of hurting others or pushing their ideas onto anyone else save themselves. And for my third wish I’d wish we’d all, those of us want to anyway, will get their ideal mate and know true love. Especially me.

I know not of any three greater wishes that a dreamer like me can ever wish for.

Screw The Fates

Do you believe in fate or do you believe you can control your own destiny?

I don’t believe in fate. I mean it seems so depressing if everything is set out for you. I believe that you can make your own destiny and your future if you try hard enough, get the right help and have some luck along the way. Crush the fates, you can do it on your own.

Having said that, circumstances can ruin the best laid plans. You have choices that you made in your life that may affect you throughout the lifespan and it can hinder things that you wanted to get done. Sometimes there is no escaping them. But some really successful people have come through a ton of hardships and thrived. They did better than you or me and we read about them.

So why can’t we do it? I dunno perhaps we aren’t made up of the sterner stuff. We just don’t have the skills or the will power or the desire to achieve what we set out to do. If we can get over that we can control our own destiny.

RIP Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka

Former professional wrestler Jimmy Snuka has has died, aged 73. The Fijian who was popularly known as “Superfly” had been living in hospice care and was told in late 2016 that he had just months to live. Snuka wrestled for several promotions from the 1970s to 2010s. He was best known for his time in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in the early to mid-1980s and was credited with introducing the high-flying style of wrestling to the WWF.[1] He was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame in 1996. Snuka was the first WrestleMania opponent of The Undertaker (at the seventh annual event), this being the first match in The Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania streak. Snuka was the inaugural ECW Heavyweight Champion (a title he held twice) in Eastern Championship Wrestling (later Extreme Championship Wrestling). His children, Jimmy Reiher, Jr. and Tamina Snuka, are also wrestlers.

Snuka was indicted and arrested in September 2015 on third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter charges, in relation to the May 1983 death of his girlfriend, Nancy Argentino, who died from injuries a coroner described as consistent with domestic violence. In the decades before the criminal charges, Argentino’s suspected homicide was a cold case in which Snuka was the only suspect. Snuka pleaded not guilty, but was ultimately found unfit to stand trial in June 2016 due to being diagnosed with dementia. His health had further declined, and in December 2016 his legal representative announced he had 6 months left to live due to his terminal illness. The charges were dismissed on January 3, 2017, when Snuka was deemed unfit to stand trial. He died twelve days later.

Snuka was the part-owner of Body Slam University and Coastal Championship Wrestling in South Florida with Dan Ackerman and Bruno Sassi. He wrote an autobiography, Superfly: The Jimmy Snuka Story, which was published on December 1, 2012. Snuka was married three times. His second marriage was to Sharon, with whom he had four children: Sarona, James, Jr., Liana, and Ata. His third marriage was to Carole on September 4, 2004.[78] He was stepfather to Carole’s three children: Bridget, Richard, and Dennis.

Angry Birds

Angry Birds is a 2016 Finnish-American 3D computer-animated action-adventure comedy film based on the video game series of the same name. It was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly (in their directorial debuts) and written by Jon Vitti. The film was animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks, and stars Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage.

Reclusive Red (so named because he is a red bird) who lives just outside of the village is sentenced to anger management class after his temper causes a “premature hatching” of a customer’s egg (and where he also threw a cake at the father’s face for trying to bust him) Resentful, Red avoids getting to know his classmates Chuck, Bomb, Terence and the instructor Matilda. One day, a boat docks at the island’s shore. It carries green-colored pigs, who claim to be peaceful explorers bringing offerings of friendship, and are accepted on the island. They introduce the birds to innovative technologies such as slingshots and helium balloons. Red is the only one initially suspicious of them, probably because their ship destroyed part of his home.

He sneaks into the ship and discovers a whole lot of pigs (initially there were only supposed to be two) yet everyone else seems to adore the pigs. As more pigs arrive and seemingly adjust to bird society, with the help of Chuck and Bomb Red seeks out Mighty Eagle, a giant bald eagle said to be the protector of the island, and the only bird that can fly, but who has not been seen for many years. They find him on top of Bird Mountain, but Mighty Eagle is now overweight, self-absorbed, and largely in retirement. Looking through the Mighty Eagle’s binoculars, Red’s group sees the pigs planting explosives around the island while the birds are at a rave party. They realize the party was a ruse to steal the birds’ eggs. Red, Bomb and Chuck attempt to warn the other birds and stop the pigs, but the pigs escape and their explosives destroy the village. When the birds realize what happened, Red rallies them to let loose their anger and take back their eggs.

The birds construct a boat and sail to Piggy Island, where they find the pigs living in a walled city. Deducing the eggs are most likely in the central castle of the city, the birds attack and defeat the pigs by firing themselves over the walls using their gifted giant slingshot. Red, Chuck, and Bomb make it to the castle and find the eggs in a boiler room, where the pigs plan to cook and eat them. Mighty Eagle arrives, having watched these events through his binoculars and had a change of heart, and carries the eggs out. As the birds escape, one egg falls out and rolls back into the castle. Red battles the pigs’ king Leonard and retrieves the egg, escaping as the pigs’ reserve of explosives blow up and destroy Piggy Island. Red reunites with the other birds as the rescued egg hatches, revealing three little blue birds (The Blues), and is declared a hero. He, Chuck, and Bomb are approached by Mighty Eagle, who claims that he wasn’t lazy but instead deliberately made the birds lose faith in him so they could find faith in themselves.

Back on Bird Island, the birds rebuild Red’s house, which had been moved by Red near the edge of the island and was eventually destroyed whenever a boat full of pigs had arrived, all the birds that have hatched sing a song to Red to thank him, and Red reluctantly lets Chuck and Bomb move in with him. During the credits, it is revealed that some of the pigs survived Piggy Island’s destruction and have begun to hatch a new plan to steal the eggs, while a mid-credits scene reveals that the three blue birds that Red rescued use a rebuilt slingshot to launch themselves out to sea.

Though funny in places, I can see why it failed to be a big hit with audiences. It doesn’t really hit you in the heart as most of these animated movies that succeed seem to do. Even some of the jokes seem to fall flat. It was released in the United States on May 20, 2016, received mixed reviews from critics and grossed over $349 million. I give it a 7 outta 10!

Swansea 0 Arsenal 4

Arsenal returned to the top four with a handsome victory at Swansea City, consigning Paul Clement to a demoralising defeat in his first Premier League game in charge of the hosts. Having initially been frustrated by their opponents, the Gunners led at half-time thanks to Olivier Giroud’s powerful, close-range finish. Alex Iwobi’s strike looped in via a big deflection off Jack Cork to double their advantage, and Kyle Naughton scored a second Swansea own goal when he turned another Iwobi shot into his own net. Alexis Sanchez completed the rout to lift Arsenal up to third in the table, while Hull’s win over Bournemouth means Swansea return to the bottom of the table. Despite some encouraging signs early in the game, this was a stark reminder to former Bayern Munich assistant manager Clement of the enormous task he faces to steer the Swans to safety.

By contrast, the ruthless nature of Arsenal’s display – particularly in an extremely one-sided second half – will surely give Arsene Wenger renewed hope of mounting a serious title challenge. The Gunners’ bid for a first title since 2004 had stuttered lately, largely due to an away record of one point from their past three Premier League matches on the road. Although they started slowly against the high-pressing Swans, the visitors settled thanks to a goal from an increasingly reliable source. Giroud started this game with 12 goals from his past 17 shots on target, and the France striker was clinical with his first effort on this occasion, seizing on Mesut Ozil’s blocked header and firing the ball into the roof of the net from six yards. Arsenal took control from that point and a period of concerted pressure early in the second half saw the floodgates open.

There was an element of luck about the second and third goals, but they were no more than the Gunners deserved for their dominance of possession and inventive use of it around the Swansea penalty area. The irrepressible Sanchez finally got in on the act after 73 minutes, volleying in from close range to score his 21st goal in 32 Premier League appearances. Arsenal have scored 27 goals away from home in the Premier League this season, at least five more than any other side. The Gunners have scored four or more goals in four away Premier League games this season, their most in a single campaign since 2002-03. Giroud has scored in each of his past nine starts, netting 11 goals in total. Sanchez has been involved in more goals (21) than any other Premier League player this season (14 goals, seven assists).

Meeting The Offspring For Lunch

Today I met my daughters for lunch. Ok, not my real daughters. These are two young ladies who I had trained at the office and were in the same company as me, until they quit back in April of 2016. But they are very close to me and I am close to them. Their names are Gopika and Athira.

20170114_140152

They are 24 and 23 years old and because of the age difference they jokingly called me daddy and the name stuck and now that’s all that they call me. I was made fun of and teased at the office like crazy because of these two but it was all fun. Even for me too, even though I would get red with embarrassment and blush! But I love them as they love me. Even their family know that I am called daddy – much to my even more embarrassment.

20170114_155357

We met at 12pm for lunch at Center Mall. First we sat and talked for a while then I treated them to pizza at Pizza Hut and later ice cream sundaes. Around half the people in the mall thought I really was their father because these two would loudly call me that! :D

20170114_155439

At the entrance. I was talking to these girls when this hot chick passed by. When they saw me looking at her , they loudly started saying “Daddy, daddy”! That chick turned around and looked at us and I was standing there with egg on my face. Hehehehe, all in a day’s work for dad.

That Feeling

Tell us about the last thing you got excited about — butterflies-in-the-stomach, giggling, can’t-wait excited.

I honestly cannot remember the last thing I got really excited about. It’s been a while. I can’t remember even getting that excited about starting this job, my current one, when I got selected for it after several months of joblessness. Even my last two phones and my current laptop which I got over a year back.

Ok, I do get excited for things that I buy – my very first Star Trek starship which was the USS Enterprise D in particular was a very exciting thing as it was my first after waiting for such a long, long time. Movies that I have been looking forward to for a while offers some excitement but not butterflies-in-the-stomach kind. I wonder what will it take for me, at this stage of my life, to get that kind of feeling again.

I have applied for a different post at my office this past week and I am looking forward to attending the interview rounds and seeing if I get it. And if I do I also want to see how I can do at it and that does offer some excitement. But it’s just a job though I have to see how much more money I can get from it. Still no butterflies!

Absolute Beauty

We’ve all heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Do you agree? is all beauty contingent on a subjective point of view?

I guess so. I mean there are a lot of things that generally is termed beautiful and most people will agree on them. Be it an object or a person or a painting or whatever. But I think most things and people / animals will not fall under that category and it takes a certain kind of person to think that they are beautiful and not everyone might agree.

And I kind of prefer it that way. I like people, women, who not everyone thinks is beautiful or that beautiful and to be honest it is when I get to know them personally that they become more attractive in my eyes. And I am not sure that everyone else will agree but I do not care. For me someone or something is beautiful because I think that they are so. And that means more to me than anyone else and that’s ok.

I guess that’s what makes people or something special.

Not Blown Away

When was the last time a movie, a book, or a television show left you cold despite all your friends (and/or all the critics) raving about it? What was it that made you go against the critical consensus?

Usually movies. The Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games series. Transformers – though most people do not like Michael Bay movies anyway. Some classic horror like The Exorcist (though I think it’s because I have known so much about it for years and years and built it up in my head a lot that when I finally saw it, I was like “this is scary”?).

And to be honest I am not blown away by anything Star Wars. I mean, it’s a family drama with some weapons and soldiers set in outer space and alien planets! And Chris Nolan movie – I mean they are good movies and all that but I am not blown away. Ok, Inception was unique and fantastic but the rest, not blowing my mind.

Sue me!

Effects Of Demonitization

Not that some section of Indian society will believe it but the effects of demonetization has not been good at all for the country. I was reading an article in the NY Times the economy is suffering. The manufacturing sector is contracting; real estate and car sales are down; and farm workers, shopkeepers and other Indians report that a shortage of cash has made life increasingly difficult. This has been noted earlier as well.

Indians had to line up for hours outside banks to deposit and withdraw cash. New notes have been in short supply because the government did not print enough of them in advance. The cash crunch has been worst in small towns and rural areas. The amount of cash in circulation fell by nearly half, from 17.7 trillion rupees ($260 billion) on Nov. 4 to 9.2 trillion ($135 billion) on Dec. 23, according to the Reserve Bank of India. No economy can lose that much currency in a few weeks without creating major hardship — certainly not one like that of India, where cash is used for about 98 percent of consumer transactions by volume. And while a growing number of people have debit cards and cellphones that can be used to transfer money, most merchants are not set up to accept such electronic payments.

There is little evidence that the currency swap has succeeded in combating corruption or that it will forestall future bad behavior once more cash becomes available. The government had said that people bringing more than 250,000 rupees ($3,660) of the old notes to banks would have to show that they had paid taxes owed on the money. Because of those rules, officials had expected that a lot of black money would never make it back to banks. Yet local news outlets are reporting that Indians have successfully deposited the vast majority of old notes. That suggests that either there wasn’t as much black money out there as the government claimed or that tax cheats found a way to deposit their hoards of cash without attracting the government’s attention, perhaps with the help of money launderers.

Hopefully things will get better as the weeks go by.

The Forest

The Forest is a 2016 American supernatural horror film directed by Jason Zada and written by Ben Ketai, Nick Antosca, and Sarah Cornwell. It stars Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney. Eoin Macken, Stephanie Vogt, Yukiyoshi Ozawa & Rina Takasaki have supporting roles.

Sara Price, recieves a call from the Japanese police stating that her twin Jess, who was working as an English teacher in Japan is missing and presumed dead. The reason they presume she is dead is that Jess was last seen into the Aokigahara forest, a forest at the northwest base of Mount Fuji in Japan known as a popular destination for the suicidal. Jess has always been a troubled woman from childhood, having seen their parents’ death in a drunk driving accident, which Sara did not witness. Hence Sara has always picked up after her sister and defended her.

Against the wishes of her fiance Rob, Sara goes to Japan and stays at the hotel her sister first had and then visits the school. Sara meets a reporter named Ayden at her hotel bar and as they drink she tells him about her sister. Aiden, who speaks Japanese having lived in Tokyo for many years invites her to go into the forest with him and a park guide, Michi, so she can look for her sister. As they enter the forest Michi tells Sara that Jess probably killed herself, which refuses to believe this, explaining how, being a twin, she can “feel” that Jess is still alive. Deep in the woods, the group discovers a yellow tent that Sara recognizes as Jess’s. With nightfall approaching, Michi suggests they leave a note for Jess and leave. Sara refuses, and Aiden volunteers to stay with her through the night. That night, Sara hears rustling in the bushes and, believing it may be Jess, rushes into the woods after her. Sara finds a Japanese girl, Hoshiko, who claims to know Jess. The girl warns Sara not to trust Aiden and flees at the sound of his voice. Sara attempts to chase after her but falls and loses her.

On their own Aiden and Sara walk around and lose their way. As they walk, Sara’s suspicions are raised and she demands Aiden to give her his phone and finds a picture of Jess on it. Aiden denies any involvement with Jess, but Sara runs into the forest alone. While running she begins to hear voices telling her to turn around. She appears to be unfazed by this until she hears the voice directly behind her. She turns around to see a hanging body and continues to run away. She then falls into an underground cave and goes unconscious, later she wakes up and discovers that she is in the cave with Hoshiko, who turns out to be a y?rei. Hoshiko then turns into what appears to be a “demonic figure”. Sara then runs the opposite way towards what appears to be Aiden. Aiden finds her and helps her out of the cave and, with some convincing, they continue to walk together. They find their way to a ranger station that Aiden had seen.

At the station Sara hallucinates that she hears Jess’s voice from behind a door and finds a note which implies that Aiden is holding Jess captive in the basement. Convinced that he is a threat, Sara attacks and kills Aiden with a small kitchen knife. However she soon realizes that Aiden was telling her the truth and it was all her hallucinations. and finds a note which implies that Aiden is holding Jess captive in the basement. Convinced that he is a threat, Sara attacks and kills Aiden with a small kitchen knife. When she cut at her father’s fingers she was actually cutting deep into her own wrists, and is now dying from blood loss in the basement. As she succumbs to her wounds, a y?rei pulls Sara into the forest floor. Her very much alive sister is rescued by the search party and explains that the “feeling” of her sister is gone and it is assumed that Jess knows Sara is dead. As the search party leaves, Michi is seen staring at a figure and realizes that it’s Sara’s spirit.

Predictable and slightly boring and even tedious in places as the actors struggle over an uninspiring script, the movie saw a negative critical reception but was a box office success, grossing $37.6 million against a reported budget of $10 million. I’ll give it a 5.5 outta 10!

Unboxing The Hideki Class Shuttle *Star Trek Starship*

The Hideki-class was a warp-capable multipurpose auxiliary craft used by the Cardassian Union’s military during the late 24th century. The class was used as an attack ship, a patrol ship, and a shuttlecraft. Smaller than Cardassian patrol cruisers, these ships could typically carry three to five occupants. The ship was considered approximately equivalent to the Starfleet Danube-class runabout, but equipped with heavier armament giving it sufficient striking power to operate in fleet actions.

20160709_175525

In 2370, a disabled Hideki-class shuttle was tractored into Deep Space 9 after having its engines completely disabled and its life support systems were operating on reserve power. Although its pilot, Natima Lang, claimed they were damaged in a meteor storm, it was clear to the Starfleet repair crew that the shuttle had been hit by Cardassian disruptors. It was determined that it was attacked by a Cardassian warship, which later arrived at DS9 to arrest the shuttle’s crew. However, this was not allowed, and following repairs, the ship was able to slip away from the station unnoticed with help from a cloaking device installed in its central engine core by Quark.

20160709_175427

Later that year, Cardassian colonists living in the Demilitarized Zone utilized modified Hideki-class shuttles, equipped with Galor-class phaser banks, to protect their colonial interests. Two of these vessels attacked a Federation merchant ship, but were deterred, and ultimately destroyed by a fighter operated by the Maquis. That same year, one of the stories Elim Garak told Doctor Bashir to explain his exile from Cardassia, involved Garak ordering to shoot down a Cardassian shuttle with escaped Bajoran prisoners on board, but unfortunately, also the daughter of a prominent Cardassian official. During the Dominion War, the Hideki-class was frequently seen escorting larger Galor-class destroyers. Ships of this type were also occasionally seen on independent patrol routes prior to the outbreak of the war, especially near the Demilitarized Zone along the border with the Federation.

20160908_104727

In 2375, during the waning days of the Dominion War, members of Rusot’s terrorist cell acquired a Cardassian shuttle with up-to-date security protocols for use to transport Rusot, Damar, Elim Garak, Kira, and Odo to the Cardassian repair facility in the Kelvas system. The designation of “pursuit vessel” may also refer to this class, as Gul Dukat described Cardassian pursuit vessels as being years ahead of Danube-class runabouts in “The Maquis, Part I”. Based on the encounter between Evek and Miles O’Brien, this observation is inconclusive, but plausible, at least based on their appearances in the Dominion War. The Star Trek Encyclopedia states that the name Hideki was chosen in honor of Yukawa Hideki, who first postulated the existence of the subatomic pion. Models of the Hideki-class have been released as part of the Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection and Star Trek: Attack Wing.

20160908_104735

The following specifications, which describes this vessel as a Cardassian fighter, comes exclusively from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual:
Production Base: Cardassia Prime Orbital Three Assembly Facility
Type: Strike fighter
Accommodation: 30 plus flight crew
Power Plant: One and possibly two M/A warp systems; one or more impulse systems
Dimensions: Length, 85.78 meters; beam, 60.14 meters; height, 12.43 meters
Mass: 120,000 metric tonnes (est.)
Performance: Warp 9.5 (observed)
Armament: Four or more spiral-wave disruptors; one medium aft disruptor wave cannon; possibly other weapons
Additionally, according to the Technical Manual, “One interesting note about the Cardassian fighter is that the basic platform seems to have been adapted from that of the USS Defiant, particularly in the forward hull notch, bridge morphology, and aft hull assembly. Starfleet is of the opinion that some classified design documentation may have been compromised.”

20160709_175518

All in all a pretty compact yet tough looking ship design. Though for the longest time I wasn’t interested in getting this model, once I got it I like the way it looks on my shelf. Hope you like the pics and now here is the video. Enjoy!
