Body at Brighton Rock
Body at Brighton Rock is an 2019 American horror thriller film, directed, written, and produced by Roxanne Benjamin. It stars Karina Fontes, Casey Adams, Emily Althaus, Miranda Bailey, Martin Spanjers, Matt Peters, Susan Burke and John Getz.Β It had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 8, 2019. It was released on April 26, 2019, by Magnet Pictures.
A low budget film it centers on Wendy, a part-time summer employee at a mountainous state park, takes on a rough trail assignment at the end of the season, trying to prove to her friends that she’s capable enough to do the job. She trades areas with her more experience colleague, who wants to be near a male park ranger, and takes the tougher terrain. She puts on her headphones and posts warning spikes and staples posters on spots and almost scares herself and another ranger when they bump into each other.
When she takes a wrong turn and ends up deep in the backcountry, alerted by her friends who sees her selfie that she posted. They point out something on the ground below the cliff she took the photo from and Wendy sees that it is a dead body. She has stumbled upon a potential crime scene. She radios in and they promise to send out a rescue & recovery team. But the sun is going down soon so she ends up having to spend the night next to the dead body with her limited supplies and must sleep in the cold night without a tent or sleeping bags.
Stuck with no communication after losing her radio and with orders to guard the site, Wendy must fight the urge to run. She meets a hunter who is illegally trying to kill a bear and he acts suspicious. He seems to be too curious about the dead body and scares her but soon Wendy loses him. As night falls the sounds of nocturnal animals and noises that you hear in the wild play on her fears. As she drifts off to sleep she even imagines the dead body reanimating and the zombie chases her. She comes to her senses and tries to keep herself awake. In the morning she sees a bear but mistakes it for another hallucination – only to find out that it is real and has sharp claws and teeth. It attacks her and she uses a lighter and a spray can of bug repellent to light it briefly on fire and the bear is singed.
However the bear, nastier than ever comes back to finish her off when shots from a shotgun scare it away. It’s the local sheriff and some cops along with Wendy’s colleagues looking for her. They are stunned that she was able to fight it off as much as she could in her weakened state. She tells them about the hunter only to find out from the cops that they his id shows that the dead body is infact the hunter! Wendy is initially stunned but they show her that he was indeed the hunter she hallucinated and that he died from a bear attack and had been lying there in the woods for several days. Wendy looks out from the cliff and laughs as the camera pans out.
Boring and dull only the zombie scene and the bear fight and final scene was really interesting to me. I didn’t find the movie very entertaining or interesting. A 4 outta 10 for me!
