Beckham To Move To MLS

Biggest news from the sporting world today (and probably for this week) is the predicted signing of David Beckham to the Los Angeles Galaxy of the Major League Soccer. The American club will get their international superstar at the end of the current season as Beckham’s contract with Real Madrid ends in June 2007. The former England captain is only being used as a substitute in this season for Madrid and is probably a little frustrated with the lack of playing time with the Spanish giants. His time with Madrid has been disappointing to say the least, only briefly showing the flashes of brilliance that he is known for. To make matters worse he was also dropped from the England squad by national coach Steve McLaren. This was a truly devastating blow for Becks as he has always been proud to represent his nation and countrymen. The new deal with LA seems to be for 5 years and at 31 he is still young enough to play for another 5 years. Certainly in the US atleast! The deal will cost the American club nothing; a far cry from the 23 million pounds that Real shelled out to get a hold of Beckhamania in July 2003.

watch brubaker online

His move to Madrid was spurred on by a tiff with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. There is the thought that he moved to Madrid as his wife, Victoria “Posh” Beckham” wanted to live in a more glamorous city than Manchester. For that the already maligned Posh was hated even more by true Man Utd fans. Now the world over football fans are gonna hate her even more; a world class player @ only 31 years old going to play in the US! It’s like a desperate attempt to milk some more money. Sure, David’s glamour image is gonna cause more that the normal share of flashbulbs to start clicking but come’ on! Who are you kidding? She wants to live in America and Los Angeles to further her career (what career) and he meekly follows. Who wears the pants in that relationship? A waste of a great talent!

Current TV Shows I Watch

My tv watching these days is sporadic at it’s best and it is due to the entry of broadband in my life. I watch a football match or two in a week, reruns of Seinfeld and Friends every weeknight to unwind (this is from 12 am to 1) and I try to catch every episode of Star Trek : Enterprise and Law & Order : SVU . I try to watch some movies, if they haven’t already started and if I haven’t seen it and heard good reviews on them. I also like to watch According to Jim as it is a funny show revolving around Jim Belushi and Courtney Thorne-Smith, who are a married couple and parents of three small kids. They are joined by Courtney’s character’s sister & brother. The sister is played by the lovely and oh so cute Kimberly Williams-Paisley (she is married, unfortunately, to country singer Brad Paisley). She was also the daughter in Steve Martin’s movies Father Of The Bride I & II. The sit-com is worth watching for Belushi’s antics and to oggle at Courtney and Kimberly.

Another series I have started liking quite a bit is Two & a Half Men which stars Charlie Sheen, who plays a care-free bachelor living a womanizing life in a Malibu apartment by the ocean. His life is disrupted by the arrival of his uptight brother Alan, who just got separated from his wife, and is the total opposite of Charlie. They are joined by Alan’s son Charlie’s son, Jake (the half man or boy in the title), every weekend. Jake provides some excellent comic turns in the series and is a hoot.

My Wife & Kids is another show that I catch on occasion albeit much more infrequently than the others. Damon Wayans is a funny, funny dad who runs a truck service. His wife is a former stockbroker who later starts helping out in her husband’s business. They have three kids (the classic two girls and a boy). I can’t stand the idiot who plays Wayans’ son in the show. He is so annoying and his character is supposed to be somewhat of an imbecile. The eldest child, a girl, went through a change of actresses and it was for the better. I admit that some of the stuff they talk about and the jokes are a bit too African-American for me but I still think that it is an ok show.

You Had Me @ Hello!

Ok, not since the seeing the only true copy of Playboy have I ever drooled this much at an inanimate object! Er, yeah! Apple has come up with another state of the art innovation – The IPhone! It is a combination of a mobile phone, a multimedia player and wireless communication device, officially announced / launched by Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Jan 9th.It has a 3.5 in screen (320 x 480), 4Gb or 8GB internal memory, will support GMS, GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi & you can also connect it to your computer. It weighs 135 grams. It runs on the OS X operating system and comes with Safari web browser. It has a 2 megapixel camera, widescreen IPod music, video and photo functionality, QWERTY screen keyboard, fingertop scrolling & a built-in rechargable (but non-removable) battery with up to 5 hours of whatever you are doing or 16 hours of listening to mp3s. If you live in the US you can get the phone only with Cingular wireless and that too on a two or three year contract with them – according to what I heard today – by June 2007. The 4GB will cost you $499 & the 8GB will come at $599. Europe will see the beauty towards the last three months of the year and for Asia it will only be seen by 2008! Till then, dream on!

Confused? So Am I

So I woke up by 8 not really know knowing what to expect today. This being the first day in a new office, I was quite nervous. And I didn’t know what time I should be there. My friend, who also works there, informed me that unlike i most places, their working hours started at 9:30 am. I smsed the Assistant HR manager asking him what time I should report and was told to come by 11 am and meet his superior, who I had never met till now. So I stuck around, reading the paper at home and having a leisurely breakfast and checked my email. By 10 I was showering and shaving and the nervousness started to hit me pretty bad. I went there a few minutes before the said time and I waited for sometime before I was ushered in to meet the Admin head. His brief meeting with me was confusing, to say the least, and I was left wondering, did they change my mind. The other guy said that he would meet me in a few minutes, during which time all thoughts came to my mind. None of them were positive.

But he came back and we sat in a small room and he laid it on me. They have a new proposed project coming up and they would like to alter my profile and put me in it. He said that it would be better than what we had originally planned out and that to give him 4 days time. By Monday we would have a clearer picture and if that doesn’t go through, I could join up for what I had signed for. Sounds good to me! I said ok, a little confused but happy that it wasn’t bad news. I get four days off till Monday and I am supposed to call him on Saturday evening or Sunday morning for a clearer picture.

So I left and decided to calm my thirsty self by drinking a cold apple juice and I called my sister to tell her the news. I then went in to buy myself a big diary for work and went back home. I have my fingers crossed.

Farewell

Given below is my farewell e-mail that I sent to everyone I know in my now former company. I have blanked out names wherever I deemed necessary, to protect the lives of the idiotic or the innocent:

The time has come for me to say farewell from the —- organization & family, after three years. It has been a rollercoster ride over three years as far as I am concerned with many ups and downs. Unfortunately, for me, the downs were outweighing the ups. But I had a nice time, I had a wonderful experience going from a postpaid call centre agent to a Team leader / Supervisor to a Call Centre Mentor….and then the downs started. Still, again I had a great oppurtunity to be a major part of the starting of a new Prepaid centric Call Centre in ———— and ——- Technologies welcomed me with open arms. There I was pushed into training and what an enjoyable ride that was. I have really enjoyed that aspect of my work here.

But all good things (?!!) must come to an end. What matters in the end is how you are compensated and I seem to have come to a dead end here in that regard. So I have decided to resign and move to another company with a better oppurtunity. I can proudly say that I was 100% true to the statement I made while I was joining. I never wanted to leave ——– and I am not – I am merely leaving —-!

Think Before You Speak

My cousin Manoj send this to me while we were chatting tonight:

Here are six reasons why you should think before you speak –
the last one is great!
Have you ever spoken and wished that you could
immediately take the words back…
or that you could crawl into a hole?
Here are the Testimonials of a few people who did….

FIRST TESTIMONY:
I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow
and asked loudly,
“How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?”
I turned around and walked back out and never went back
My husband didn’t say a word…
he knew better.
SECOND TESTIMONY:
I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls.
I was unhappy with the women’s type I had been using.
After browsing for several minutes,
I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store.
He asked if he could help me.
Without thinking, I looked at him and said, “I think I like playing with men’s balls”

THIRD TESTIMONY:
My sister and I were at the mall and
passed by a store that sold a
variety of candy and nuts.
As we were looking at the display case,
the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help.
I replied, “No, I’m just looking at your nuts.”
My sister started to laugh hysterically.
The boy grinned, and I turned beet-red and walked away. To this day,
my sister has never let me forget.

FOURTH TESTIMONY:
While in line at the bank one afternoon,
my toddler decided to release
some pent-up energy and ran amok.
I was finally able to grab hold of
her after receiving looks of disgust
and annoyance from other patrons.
I told her that if she did not start behaving
“right now” she would be punished.
To my horror, she looked me in the eye and said in a voice just ! as threatening,
“If you don’t let me go right now,
I will tell Grandma that I saw you
kissing Daddy’s pee-pee last night!”
The silence was deafening after this enlightening exchange.
Even the tellers stopped what they were doing.
I mustered up the last of my dignity and
watch annie get your gun online
walked out of the bank with my daughter in tow.
The last thing I heard when the door closed behind me, were screams of laughter.

FIFTH TESTIMONY:
Have you ever ! asked your child a question too many times?
download the last starfighter
My three-year-old son had a lot of problems with potty training and I was on him constantly.
One day we stopped at Taco Bell for a quick lunch, in between errands
It was very busy, with a full dining room.
While enjoying my taco,
I smelled something funny,
so of course I checked
my seven-month-old daughter, she was clean.
The realized that Danny
had not asked to go potty in a while.
I asked him if he needed to go,
and he said “No”.
I kept thinking
“Oh Lord, that child has had an accident, and I don’t have any clothes with me.”
Then I said,
“Danny, are you SURE you didn’t have an accident?”
“No,” he replied.
I just KNEW that he must have had an accident, because the smell was getting worse.

Soooooo, I asked one more time, “Danny did you have an accident ? This time he jumped up, yanked down his pants,
bent over, spread his cheeks
and yelled
“SEE MOM, IT’S JUST FARTS!!”
While 30 people nearly choked to death on their tacos laughing,
he calmly pulled up his pants and sat down.
An old couple made me feel better,
thanking me for the best laugh they’d ever had!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST TESTIMONY:
This had most of the state of Michigan laughing for 2 days
and a very embarrassed female news anchor who will,
in the future, likely think before she speaks.
What happens when you predict snow but don’t get any!
We had a female news anchor that,
the day after it was supposed to have snowed and didn’t,
turned to the weatherman and asked:
“So Bob, where’s that 8 inches you promised me last night?”
Not only did HE have to leave the set,
but half the crew did too they were laughing so hard!

Now, didn’t that feel good?
Pass it on to someone you know who needs a laugh
and remember
we all say things we don’t really mean,
so think before you speak

Sick Day

A few things I did while I was sick today:

  • Slept the afternoon away, for the first time in ages. It helped.
  • Drank a soothing cup of lemon-tea that I think I should try more often
  • Watched some WWE (Smackdown) action
  • Read most of the articles in the latest Reader’s Digest
  • Chatted with my cousin Manoj, who tends to disappear of the radar a lot
  • Created a photo gallery using Coppermine the last starfighter dvd Photo Gallery software
  • Wondered if it will ever replace Flickr in my life & site
  • Found out that my current company is going to attempt to retain me
  • Had some mineral soda and liked it
  • Discovered a family group in Orkut that was filled with strangers (except for Raju, Priya, Shanker, Manoj & Shalini
  • Found out later that those strangers were infact my second & possible third cousins
  • Found that a little weird
  • Found out that Mike Comrie has signed with my Ottawa Senators in a mid-season transfer
  • Ate only kanji (rice & water) with chammandi (coconut paste & chillies)

The Smell Of Leather

It was my weekly off from work today and I had a few things to do. But it didn’t quite work out as I had planned. First of all, I woke up past 10:00 am since I went to sleep only by 3:30 am. I slowly had breakfast and read the paper and was taking a shower by 11. However Lakshmi called me from Chennai and asked me about the change in jobs. Then as usual we chatted about all our friends from the office days and spoke about all the things that have happened. I learned that Gijimol is pregnant and is expected to deliver in a few more weeks. It is always good to talk to Lachu, who is one of my closest friends but I can’t get to see her anymore. Anyway, by 12 I had to end the conversation and left for Jos Junction.

At Jos, I first activated & recharged my new sim and then at the same shop, which was a shoe shop that also does mobile recharges & sells sims, I asked them if they had an executive style bag. They had a wide variety of them indeed and after a few minutes I selected a really nice one; the pic you see on the extreme right!

That done, I took an auto to Panampilly Nagar to pay my broadband bill at Tata-VSNL. It was 1 pm by then and from there I went to Shenoys to check out both Music World & Planet M. They both had extremely bad selections at the moment so I didn’t buy anything or spend my time there. Instead I went to have coffee at the CCD opposite Music World and had, what would be my only lunch, a choco frappe. The mood at CCD was not great as a bunch of noisy school girls were there chatting like mad and giggling into their cell phones. Some other more grown up crowd was there and I rarely enjoy it in CCD if they have a huge crowd, so I left early.

Then it was off to buy a couple of shirts, but they had a really bad selection (it must be because we are just into the New Year) that I only selected a black one. They really had some crappy shirts which I would not be caught dead in. As I was paying for it, I noticed the display of leather wallets and on close inspection, the one I have with me was tearing in a few places and at the stitches. It was getting ready to be put down and so I bought me a new cool wallet (Pictures 1 to 3). I just love the smell of fresh leather! After that, I was feeling tired and sleepy so didn’t bother to have lunch and just came home for a short nap.

Sunday Blues

I used to like working on Sundays; there’s less pressure, everyone is more relaxed, it’s less tense, there’s no upper management (lazing on their sofas no doubt) and it is overall quite enjoyable and casual. Ofcourse a really bad Sunday can ruin it and be a terror or a very slow and dull one can be a pain as well. My experience of working on Sundays are usually good.

killer nurse movie

But, as expected, I just cannot sit at the office now that I given my resignation. It bores me to death and I was so restless the past three days since. I didn’t go ahead with my plan of aggressive training to improve quality since I would not be able to finish it. I basically can’t do anything there now. The 5th was a blur mostly, people coming to ask me if it was true that I had resigned and stuff. Then yesterday I spent my day doing…nothing. I spoke to many of the people and spent time with those who were closest to me. I won’t be able to do this much longer so I am taking my time with each person. I did more of the same today.

Last night I couldn’t sleep, and woke up very tired. I just didn’t want to go to work but forced myself to anyway. I couldn’t wait for evening to roll around so that I could leave as I was bored. I took up a new connection from the company that I am gonna join; they are gonna give me a good offer for a connection in a few days but I took one anyhow out of the sheer excitement of joining them. I dilly-dallied over coffee and stayed to talk with several people for quite a long time. Finally I took my leave and headed homeward.

We spoke for sometime while we had our coffees, about my old company, my new one, about all the crap that has happened to our families and about getting out of India if given half a chance! He is awaiting his passport and will try to go abroad and make some money. After a while, we decided to go to a club and have some vodkas (with lime cordial & lemons) a couple of light snacks. We spent almost an hour and a half there and spoke about his brother Arun for most of it. Then we went out separate ways. I had a nice dinner and came back home.

Ripping CDs

This will be the year of ripping my Cds and making mp3s out of the songs. I don’t want to waste electricity by using the pc and playing songs on my stereo – in fact I haven’t used it in a long while. So, I’m doing the wise thing and creating mp3s of all the songs in my cd collection. It will take a while, even though I do not have that big a cd collection like some people. I wish I could do something about the massive stack of tapes that I have! Casette tapes suck and I can barely play most of them. Oh well, there’s always Limewire and Kazaa to fall back on.

So to start off, I just picked three cds from my stack; just took the top three nearest to me and the first three are (drumroll please!!!)

Apprehensions?

I would be lying if I told you that I wasn’t more than a little scared about starting off at a new place of work. My security blanket that was the net of friends & colleagues and friendly colleagues that are in my current place of work in some capacity or the other won’t be available to me at the new company. Ok, I do have a few friends or rather acquaintances over there (which is how I got my foot in the door in the first place) but it’s nothing compared to what I have here. After I sent out sms after sms to most of the people here, informing them that I had just resigned as I got a new job, several called me back to enquire about the details while others sent back smses of the congratulatory kind.

passage to india a online download

I know that they have my best interests in mind and that they have felt sorry for my state of being since Jan 06. So they are happy for me that I will be getting a better pay and a better status, even if it somewhere else. Do I dare assume that I will be getting similar kind of feeling from another place? I have always been able to make friends fast and people generally seem to like me & be fond of me. I know that, to some, for a guy of 30 it may seem….childish! But I assure you that it is no such thing, just a lonely guy’s thoughts. And in return I do get attached to people.

Well in a few minutes I will have to get ready to go to work. These next few days will be the hardest and the longest of the year that I have spent here. But they should not have any resentment to me leaving them. After all, it’s not like they have really done that much for me. I have done more than what they pay me for and I don’t even get any credit back for it; forget about payment. Everyone I met for the interview in the new company asked me the same thing – you were actually doing two jobs that was not meant to be done! My thoughts exactly. I could not concentrate on the training & quality aspects of my job since I also had to do supervision. It is a sad part of the fact that I did really enjoy my job but perhaps not really working there since certain people came in to higher posts.

The Adventures of Tintin & Gang

The Adventures of Tintin has always been one of my favourite childhood comics. A few of my cousins & I being engrossed in reading and discussing the series is definitely a treasured childhood memory. As pictured above, the main cast of the comic book series is as follows: Captain Haddock, Tintin, Snowy the dog, Professor Cuthbert Calculus and the mumbling police detectives Thomson & Thompson. Pictured & certainly an essential supporting cast of the series includes Nestor, Captain Haddock’s butler, famed opera singer Bianca Castafiore & her maid Irma. Arch-villains are Muller the evil German doctor, and Rastapopolous the criminal mastermind.

Although the series start out with just Tintin on adventures with only Snowy for company, soon he is joined by the Captain, the Professor & the detectives. Incidentally, although they are remarkably alike in appearance and mannerisms, the detectives are not actually twins or even brothers! Something I learnt today. Which explains why they are called Thompson & Thomson (Thompson with a ‘P’ & Thomson without a ‘P’). They are always a hoot and manage to get themselves in trouble a lot.

Professor Calculus is nearly completely deaf & very absent-minded but has a lot of inventions that are widely used within the series and indeed been even the main storyline as well. Captain Haddock is a former Merchant Navy captain whose ancestor left him the beautiful Marlinspike Hall – a setting for some of the adventures. He is short-tempered and loves to drink and often uses cusswords like “billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles”, “ten thousand thundering typhoons”, “troglodytes”, “bashi-bazouk”, “kleptomaniac”, “anacoluthon”, and “pockmark”, but nothing that is actually considered a swear word.

These were often used by me and some other male cousins when verbally attacking my sister and our female cousins. And ofcourse Snowy, a loyal pet & companion who has gotten drunk on a few occasions by drinking spilled whiskey and is always on the lookout for a bone or two.

My New Job!

I got the new job that I had applied for! Yaay me! Surprisingly enough I was selected for the job of trainer in the call centre & customer care division of the rival cell phone service company of my current post. They are unable to take me on the company payrolls as I have not completed my graduation (fair enough)! The pay is much better and I feel really good about it. I almost jumped with joy, after meeting with the HR manager in this company and when everything was finalized. He asked me to complete the formalities today and I was eager to do so as well. I think, I kinda knew that I would get this job from the moment I met the call centre manager over there; it just gave me an overall great feeling. And I am so happy about it. So I went over to where I am supposed to sign up and waited until they drafted me the offer letter and other documents which I am to sign and fill and hand over to them in due time.

download fame online

The downside of this is that I have to join them next week by Wednesday! That does not give me much time to prepare leaving from my current company and I won’t be able to give them a 15 day notice which is the norm. I know that no one likes to be faced with an executive who goes off without that 15 days but I cannot help it. I would love to be able to give them that – they have been great to me but not the main company! I have only good feeling about the bpo and my fellow staff there. I teared up as I sat and wrote my resignation letter and signed it in front of Baanu & Namrata. They were understanding but at the same time they too are planning on putting their papers and have supported my decision in quitting. I am gonna miss the both of them as whole lot.

What about my kids? The agents in the call centre, the majority of who I have given training and the majority of whom hold me close to their heart. I know several of them are gonna miss me and I am really gonna miss a lot of them. There are a few who are really new and a couple of downright assholes who I couldn’t care a rat’s ass about! Everyone else is dear to me. But all things must come to an end! I can always look back with pride and joy at what I have accomplished there.

I must tell you that I have re-discovered my passion for books with a strong commitment. For years since the advancement of the internet and the high accessability of cable tv, novels & books were left on the backburner. I remember having a good collection of novels, either purchased by myself or given to me as a gift from a friend or relative. I read everything and used to get immersed in the process; creating faces for the characters that I was bonding with and imagining every scene which I could see in my mind as if I were watching it on a tv. Even while reading the dialogues I would actually hear a voice and attach a tone and accent to it! Weird, yeah I know!

But then for a while I didn’t read as much, selling off all my books save a few and hardly every reading a new one in ages. Recently I have started the hobby all over again and hope that this time, even with broadband connection, cable & an active work life, I will never stop reading. For sometime now, I have been occasionally stopping by the used book fair held at MG Road near Padma (selling mostly used books from the US and Canada) and get great books at bargain price. I will enter a review on the above three books at a later time; I’m not sure but I am thinking of creating a separate page for all the books that I own. We’ll see!

Time To Spring Into Action

the ladykillers online I’ve begun preparations to spring my action plan at work for the month of January. I had a good discussion with the manager for training and with Seema about how I should exactly proceed and what things I should demand and what things are a must. I know that reports are a must. Excel sheets (oh how I hate them) are the norm and my training section of the hard disk is now brimful of files of trainings that I have conducted, audits that I have done plus more excel sheets on monthly reports! No wonder the system at work is getting so slow!

I have some ideas on how to go about the new year and will start with smaller sessions and bring other people for specialized areas – like technical, complaints & other such stuff. I got the ok for it but time, resources and space is limited, so I have to make do with what I have.

Meanwhile, I got a call from the HR department of the company with which I have applied and interviewed with for the job. They wanted me to come down there today but since I had to start work early for today’s session and since they called me only at 11:00 pm (which really didn’t give me much notice and time to arrange anything) I begged them to change it to tomorrow. I hope they understand that I really want the job with them but since I have committed to doing the things I have planned today, there is no way that I can wiggle out of it. It would seem hypocritical of me to ask & suggest for something and not have that something done because I am not there! So, as much as I want to go to meet with the HR people there, I have stuff to do today.
