Hanging onto promises and songs of yesterday
The NHL All-Stars game approaches us on the 24th of this month. This is the first time in three years that it is happening. The reason for the three year delay is the 2004-05 lockout due to differences between the players union and the owners regarding salary. That was sorted out and there was a full season last year, however due to the 2006 Winter Olympics, the NHL decided to skip the All Stars to give the players a rest. This season, they have brought it back to showcase the talents of the new breed and the older breed. From time to time you come across a player or players who have surprised the sport and it’s followers. Yanic Perreault is one such player. At the start of the season, he was without a team. Despite the Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada) native having his best year in terms of points with the Nashville Predators last season and having six 20 goal seasons under his belt and a well deserved reputation as a one of the NHL’s top faceoff men, his one year contract was not renewed. So he was without a team, until an injury hit Phoenix Coyotes decided to give him a try and signed him on October 30th. Since then, Yanic has scored 14 goals and 25 points and is leading his team. His faceoff skills still at a very good 62.4 win percentage, the center will take his place in his first ever NHL All Star game at the age of 35.
Don’t we all enjoy a good comeback.

The Golden Globes Award ceremony were held earlier today morning (in the US it would be last night). I normally don’t watch award shows until the end, to see who won the best supporting roles, the best actors / actress & best picture. These are the only categories worth waiting for. What I liked about this year; here are some winners :
half broken things movie download
I didn’t know anyone else who won or hadn’t seen or heard of the movies that won. As for TV, nothing that I watch won, although I like Hugh Laurie and he won for Best Actor/Drama for his role as Dr.House. And Warren Beatty was honoured with the Cecil De Mille award for lifetime achievement, present by Tom Hanks.
So, i was supposed to start off at the new job today but since the manager is away and won’t be back till 10 pm tonite, my first day has been pushed to Tuesday. That is cool with me although, I am wondering : these were the same people who wanted me to join asap and didn’t want me to give the usual 15 days notice. And not that I don’t appreciate the almost 5 day holiday that I get. I can relax, chat, listen to music, surf the net, spend long hours drinking & reading @ the coffee shop or the bar, sleep the afternoons if I feel like it. There’s paint work going on at the apartment. I didn’t go out much, except to get a couple of beers and a nice lunch on Saturday. So tomorrow is the big day and to tell you the truth, I am tired of waiting. Let’s get it on!

watch appaloosa online Last nite I managed to catch most of Newcastle’s 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspurs at White Hart Lane. There were some other stuff also on and unfortunately my fingers kept changing the channels to the tv shows a lot that I missed the full excitement of a great match. These two teams will be playing for UEFA Cup spots more than anything. Tottenham for all their style and team play are now 8th in the league and the way they played throughout the game they should have won it and won it in style. For large parts of the game, Spurs seemed to dominate their rivals and at one point I was wondering if it would be an embarrassing one-sided affair. Jermain Defoe started it off for Spurs, scoring off an assist by Steed Malbranque, even though the English striker was actually offside. In a couple of minutes teenage defender Paul Huntington equalized for the away team. In the second half Spurs restored their lead when Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov put them ahead with his 11th goal of the season. But Newcastle’s Nigerian striker Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins went on to score a brilliant goal to make it 2-2. With the momentum on the side of the visitors, Nicky Butt scored a goal which was set up by Norberto Solano and Kieron Dyer and clinched the victory for the visiting team.
However the match was marred by an incident between Butt & Spurs defender Pascal Chimbonda. Follwing a clash between the Spurs player and Newcastle goalie Shay Given, Chimbonda slapped Butt as the two players argued. The row escalated into the tunnel that leads to the dressing room and Butt had to be pulled off. Glen Roeder said that the row inspired his Newcastle side to victory. Ok, so someone slap the whole Indian squad – we might win the World Cup!
The Beauty of the internet is that you can discover many, many excellent music artists / groups that you would normally find hard to find in your local store. There might be no chance of them ever coming by your neck of the woods but so what? You get to enjoy some of the best music around the world. And to hell with MTV and other channels that only play heavily hyped and marketed stuff like hip-hop and rap these days. I can’t stand to watch that stuff. But through the net I have discovered numerous artists who I now consider to be among my all-time favourites. Examples are : Big Sugar, Aaron Pritchett, Jason McCoy, Todd Kerns, Lisa Brokop, The Tragically Hip, Alexisonfire, Regina Specktor etc. The majority of these artists are Canadian – this is due to four reasons: a)Most of my online friends are Canadian, b) My fascination with Canada and Canadians in general 3) Canadian musicians are not promoted as forcefully as their American or British counterparts & foremost 4) Canadians make excellent music!
Anthony Gomes is one such artist. I have just discovered his music, quite by accident, but I am rocking out to it with loads of enjoyment & enthusiasm. To the ignorant (which included me till recently), Gomes is a Portuguese Canadian Blues-Rock guitarist / musician / singer from Toronto, Canada. He debuted his brand of music in 1997 and has released four albums in his career. He is considered among the premier guitarists in his genre and his band and he is known for their relentless touring which has garnered him a loyal fanbase. He would move to Chicago & Nashville to learn more about the roots style music & song writing that would influence his albums. The first three albums varied in their content : the first one “Blues In Technicolor” was a guitar-centric, gunslinger kinda album that showcased his chops in 1998. Then 2000 saw the mostly acoustic “Sweet Stringin’ Soul” in a more intimate setting. The next one, “Unity” came out in 2002 and was voted by some critics as one of the 30 essential blues albums of all time.
“Music Is The Medicine” starts off in a funky blues-rocker style with the title track which makes you wanna tap your feet and groove. Next track Bluebird (a symbol of happiness) is great track, with a lovely chorus section. Now She’s Gone is a lament of a man whose woman who has upped & left him and has moved on. You can dance to Stand Up – a song that tells you stand up for what you believe and back it up with action. War On War is about the current situation and is a protest song from the US situation. A declaration that the protest kind of war is the only way to fight unjust war that is the propaganda of the wealthy & powerful politicians. Love Is The Answer is request to humanity to come together in peace & love and to forget their differences.
Everyday Superstar is a funky track with r&b influences standing out strong and I just love the section in which the band does the “tadananano” part. A rockier Testify is an excuse for you to party. Waiting For A Sign is a personal look inside oneself, analysing the life you have lived. The funk is back with What If which has a groovy guitar intro that uses the wah-wah pedal effects to good but understated use. Run is a rocker with blistering guitar work, a song about bravely facing your obstacles. Album closer When The Right Woman Does You Wrong is all bar blues. You can taste the tequila shots or the whiskey bottles or the vodka & limes in the music & words. The song is about how the love of your life can hurt you and that the hurt is the worst kind that you can feel. The searing & lengthy uitar solo is done to great effect.
All said, this is a great album and one I would highly recommend to lovers of anything related to blues, r&b & rock. You can play it over and over again and never tire of it. I have already played it 6 times in two days; it is that addictive.
Song for the day – “Music Is The Medicine” – ANTHONY GOMES
If, like me you were a young kid between the ages of 9-15 during the latter half of the 80’s, chances are that you were affected by the movies The Goonies when you saw it and are still nostalgic about it. This is one movie that brings back such memories. Steven Spielberg wrote the story and Chris Columbus created the screenplay based on it and it was directed by Richard Donner, who was behind movies like The Omen, Leathel Weapon & Superman (how can you go wrong with that combination?)! The Goonies are a band of kids bent on rescuing the Goon Docks in their hometown of Astoria, Oregon from demolition and they attempt to do that by finding the lost treasure of One-eyed Willie, a pirate. Mikey finds the map in his father’s attic and it leads to a tunnel in a rundown restaurant, which is also the hideout of a criminal family called the Fratellis. Once the Fratelli brothers find out what the kids are after, they and their mother also go in search of the treasure for their personal gain. One of the Goonies, Chuck, befriends the third Fratelli brother, Sloth, who is deranged and deformed but friendly to the kids. The kids have to dodge various booby traps laid by Willie and his men in the tunnels.
At the end of the tunnel they discover an old pirate ship, which houses the treasure and the skeletons of Willie and his band of pirates. As they fill their pockets with the treasure, the Fratellis reach them and steal the loot from them. A dynamite is lit, mistaken for a candle and the cave starts to collapse. The Goonies dive into the water and swim for safety. A search party led by cops finds them on the beach and they apprehend the Fratellis with help from the strong Sloth. Fortunately for them, a small bag of jewels and gems was not taken away from Mikey and they can use the money from selling it to save the docks from being demolished and made into a golf course. Willie’s ship is lost into the ocean and Chuck says that Sloth is going to stay with him & his family from now.
The film stars child actors Sean Austin (who has managed to get a decent career for himself even as a grown up) as Mikey, former child superstar and now where-is-he Corey Feldman as Clark aka Mouth, & Josh Brolin (also in Hollow Man). Joe Pantoliano is one of the villainous yet comedic Fratelli brothers. The movie was a big hit and is now also considered a cult favourite with numerous references in other movies & tv. 8 outta 10!
Getting a few more CDs done and soon I will be through with it. Today evening, a couple of beers in my belly and large intestine I wanted to do at least another 8 more. But the beers made me sleepy and I took a three hour nap and then lazed about for a while. I only got around to doing these three, but what a great three albums.

Biggest news from the sporting world today (and probably for this week) is the predicted signing of David Beckham to the Los Angeles Galaxy of the Major League Soccer. The American club will get their international superstar at the end of the current season as Beckham’s contract with Real Madrid ends in June 2007. The former England captain is only being used as a substitute in this season for Madrid and is probably a little frustrated with the lack of playing time with the Spanish giants. His time with Madrid has been disappointing to say the least, only briefly showing the flashes of brilliance that he is known for. To make matters worse he was also dropped from the England squad by national coach Steve McLaren. This was a truly devastating blow for Becks as he has always been proud to represent his nation and countrymen. The new deal with LA seems to be for 5 years and at 31 he is still young enough to play for another 5 years. Certainly in the US atleast! The deal will cost the American club nothing; a far cry from the 23 million pounds that Real shelled out to get a hold of Beckhamania in July 2003.

My tv watching these days is sporadic at it’s best and it is due to the entry of broadband in my life. I watch a football match or two in a week, reruns of Seinfeld and Friends every weeknight to unwind (this is from 12 am to 1) and I try to catch every episode of Star Trek : Enterprise and Law & Order : SVU . I try to watch some movies, if they haven’t already started and if I haven’t seen it and heard good reviews on them. I also like to watch According to Jim as it is a funny show revolving around Jim Belushi and Courtney Thorne-Smith, who are a married couple and parents of three small kids. They are joined by Courtney’s character’s sister & brother. The sister is played by the lovely and oh so cute Kimberly Williams-Paisley (she is married, unfortunately, to country singer Brad Paisley). She was also the daughter in Steve Martin’s movies Father Of The Bride I & II. The sit-com is worth watching for Belushi’s antics and to oggle at Courtney and Kimberly.
Another series I have started liking quite a bit is Two & a Half Men which stars Charlie Sheen, who plays a care-free bachelor living a womanizing life in a Malibu apartment by the ocean. His life is disrupted by the arrival of his uptight brother Alan, who just got separated from his wife, and is the total opposite of Charlie. They are joined by Alan’s son Charlie’s son, Jake (the half man or boy in the title), every weekend. Jake provides some excellent comic turns in the series and is a hoot.
My Wife & Kids is another show that I catch on occasion albeit much more infrequently than the others. Damon Wayans is a funny, funny dad who runs a truck service. His wife is a former stockbroker who later starts helping out in her husband’s business. They have three kids (the classic two girls and a boy). I can’t stand the idiot who plays Wayans’ son in the show. He is so annoying and his character is supposed to be somewhat of an imbecile. The eldest child, a girl, went through a change of actresses and it was for the better. I admit that some of the stuff they talk about and the jokes are a bit too African-American for me but I still think that it is an ok show.
Ok, not since the seeing the only true copy of Playboy have I ever drooled this much at an inanimate object! Er, yeah! Apple has come up with another state of the art innovation – The IPhone! It is a combination of a mobile phone, a multimedia player and wireless communication device, officially announced / launched by Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Jan 9th.It has a 3.5 in screen (320 x 480), 4Gb or 8GB internal memory, will support GMS, GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi & you can also connect it to your computer. It weighs 135 grams. It runs on the OS X operating system and comes with Safari web browser. It has a 2 megapixel camera, widescreen IPod music, video and photo functionality, QWERTY screen keyboard, fingertop scrolling & a built-in rechargable (but non-removable) battery with up to 5 hours of whatever you are doing or 16 hours of listening to mp3s. If you live in the US you can get the phone only with Cingular wireless and that too on a two or three year contract with them – according to what I heard today – by June 2007. The 4GB will cost you $499 & the 8GB will come at $599. Europe will see the beauty towards the last three months of the year and for Asia it will only be seen by 2008! Till then, dream on!
download madagascar escape 2 africa online I finally got round to ripping a few more cds into mp3s. That makes it a total of 10 cds now. I had already done it to a cd collection of songs that belongs to my cousin Manoj. Now that I have a small list completed, maybe Mike won’t make fun of me so much! Actually he will because he has completed more than a 1000 and I have 10! You do the math. But I will get there someday. Today’s list is :
So I woke up by 8 not really know knowing what to expect today. This being the first day in a new office, I was quite nervous. And I didn’t know what time I should be there. My friend, who also works there, informed me that unlike i most places, their working hours started at 9:30 am. I smsed the Assistant HR manager asking him what time I should report and was told to come by 11 am and meet his superior, who I had never met till now. So I stuck around, reading the paper at home and having a leisurely breakfast and checked my email. By 10 I was showering and shaving and the nervousness started to hit me pretty bad. I went there a few minutes before the said time and I waited for sometime before I was ushered in to meet the Admin head. His brief meeting with me was confusing, to say the least, and I was left wondering, did they change my mind. The other guy said that he would meet me in a few minutes, during which time all thoughts came to my mind. None of them were positive.
But he came back and we sat in a small room and he laid it on me. They have a new proposed project coming up and they would like to alter my profile and put me in it. He said that it would be better than what we had originally planned out and that to give him 4 days time. By Monday we would have a clearer picture and if that doesn’t go through, I could join up for what I had signed for. Sounds good to me! I said ok, a little confused but happy that it wasn’t bad news. I get four days off till Monday and I am supposed to call him on Saturday evening or Sunday morning for a clearer picture.
So I left and decided to calm my thirsty self by drinking a cold apple juice and I called my sister to tell her the news. I then went in to buy myself a big diary for work and went back home. I have my fingers crossed.

Given below is my farewell e-mail that I sent to everyone I know in my now former company. I have blanked out names wherever I deemed necessary, to protect the lives of the idiotic or the innocent:
The time has come for me to say farewell from the —- organization & family, after three years. It has been a rollercoster ride over three years as far as I am concerned with many ups and downs. Unfortunately, for me, the downs were outweighing the ups. But I had a nice time, I had a wonderful experience going from a postpaid call centre agent to a Team leader / Supervisor to a Call Centre Mentor….and then the downs started. Still, again I had a great oppurtunity to be a major part of the starting of a new Prepaid centric Call Centre in ———— and ——- Technologies welcomed me with open arms. There I was pushed into training and what an enjoyable ride that was. I have really enjoyed that aspect of my work here.
But all good things (?!!) must come to an end. What matters in the end is how you are compensated and I seem to have come to a dead end here in that regard. So I have decided to resign and move to another company with a better oppurtunity. I can proudly say that I was 100% true to the statement I made while I was joining. I never wanted to leave ——– and I am not – I am merely leaving —-!
I wish to thank all of you, who have been my extended family & friends in ————– and I leave a piece of my heart with you. I will miss you all. My team during my time at —– was the best and I will especially miss :-
Seema, Michelle, Anu, Ann, Anjana, Jalpa, Deepa Sara, Preetha, Kshema, Sreeja, Shiny, Alpana, Preethy, Rakesh, Nishil, Manu & Vipin (all my former call centre collegues).
Sangeetha Rajesh, you have been a big sister and a tremendous help and a shoulder to cry on.
Bindu ma’am, you were the one who drove me and pushed me to do well.
Saritha TP & Rathi Kumar for always great support
Jithu, thanks for going all out and offering your help 24/7

Song for the day – “Time Of Your Life” – GREEN DAY
My cousin Manoj send this to me while we were chatting tonight:
Here are six reasons why you should think before you speak –
the last one is great!
Have you ever spoken and wished that you could
immediately take the words back…
or that you could crawl into a hole?
Here are the Testimonials of a few people who did….
FIRST TESTIMONY:
I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow
and asked loudly,
“How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?”
I turned around and walked back out and never went back
My husband didn’t say a word…
he knew better.
SECOND TESTIMONY:
I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls.
I was unhappy with the women’s type I had been using.
After browsing for several minutes,
I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store.
He asked if he could help me.
Without thinking, I looked at him and said, “I think I like playing with men’s balls”
THIRD TESTIMONY:
My sister and I were at the mall and
passed by a store that sold a
variety of candy and nuts.
As we were looking at the display case,
the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help.
I replied, “No, I’m just looking at your nuts.”
My sister started to laugh hysterically.
The boy grinned, and I turned beet-red and walked away. To this day,
my sister has never let me forget.
FOURTH TESTIMONY:
While in line at the bank one afternoon,
my toddler decided to release
some pent-up energy and ran amok.
I was finally able to grab hold of
her after receiving looks of disgust
and annoyance from other patrons.
I told her that if she did not start behaving
“right now” she would be punished.
To my horror, she looked me in the eye and said in a voice just ! as threatening,
“If you don’t let me go right now,
I will tell Grandma that I saw you
kissing Daddy’s pee-pee last night!”
The silence was deafening after this enlightening exchange.
Even the tellers stopped what they were doing.
I mustered up the last of my dignity and
watch annie get your gun online
walked out of the bank with my daughter in tow.
The last thing I heard when the door closed behind me, were screams of laughter.
FIFTH TESTIMONY:
Have you ever ! asked your child a question too many times?
download the last starfighter
My three-year-old son had a lot of problems with potty training and I was on him constantly.
One day we stopped at Taco Bell for a quick lunch, in between errands
It was very busy, with a full dining room.
While enjoying my taco,
I smelled something funny,
so of course I checked
my seven-month-old daughter, she was clean.
The realized that Danny
had not asked to go potty in a while.
I asked him if he needed to go,
and he said “No”.
I kept thinking
“Oh Lord, that child has had an accident, and I don’t have any clothes with me.”
Then I said,
“Danny, are you SURE you didn’t have an accident?”
“No,” he replied.
I just KNEW that he must have had an accident, because the smell was getting worse.
Soooooo, I asked one more time, “Danny did you have an accident ? This time he jumped up, yanked down his pants,
bent over, spread his cheeks
and yelled
“SEE MOM, IT’S JUST FARTS!!”
While 30 people nearly choked to death on their tacos laughing,
he calmly pulled up his pants and sat down.
An old couple made me feel better,
thanking me for the best laugh they’d ever had!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST TESTIMONY:
This had most of the state of Michigan laughing for 2 days
and a very embarrassed female news anchor who will,
in the future, likely think before she speaks.
What happens when you predict snow but don’t get any!
We had a female news anchor that,
the day after it was supposed to have snowed and didn’t,
turned to the weatherman and asked:
“So Bob, where’s that 8 inches you promised me last night?”
Not only did HE have to leave the set,
but half the crew did too they were laughing so hard!
Now, didn’t that feel good?
Pass it on to someone you know who needs a laugh
and remember
we all say things we don’t really mean,
so think before you speak
A few things I did while I was sick today:
Song for the day – “Digging A Hole” – BIG SUGAR
It was my weekly off from work today and I had a few things to do. But it didn’t quite work out as I had planned. First of all, I woke up past 10:00 am since I went to sleep only by 3:30 am. I slowly had breakfast and read the paper and was taking a shower by 11. However Lakshmi called me from Chennai and asked me about the change in jobs. Then as usual we chatted about all our friends from the office days and spoke about all the things that have happened. I learned that Gijimol is pregnant and is expected to deliver in a few more weeks. It is always good to talk to Lachu, who is one of my closest friends but I can’t get to see her anymore. Anyway, by 12 I had to end the conversation and left for Jos Junction.
At Jos, I first activated & recharged my new sim and then at the same shop, which was a shoe shop that also does mobile recharges & sells sims, I asked them if they had an executive style bag. They had a wide variety of them indeed and after a few minutes I selected a really nice one; the pic you see on the extreme right!
That done, I took an auto to Panampilly Nagar to pay my broadband bill at Tata-VSNL. It was 1 pm by then and from there I went to Shenoys to check out both Music World & Planet M. They both had extremely bad selections at the moment so I didn’t buy anything or spend my time there. Instead I went to have coffee at the CCD opposite Music World and had, what would be my only lunch, a choco frappe. The mood at CCD was not great as a bunch of noisy school girls were there chatting like mad and giggling into their cell phones. Some other more grown up crowd was there and I rarely enjoy it in CCD if they have a huge crowd, so I left early.
Then it was off to buy a couple of shirts, but they had a really bad selection (it must be because we are just into the New Year) that I only selected a black one. They really had some crappy shirts which I would not be caught dead in. As I was paying for it, I noticed the display of leather wallets and on close inspection, the one I have with me was tearing in a few places and at the stitches. It was getting ready to be put down and so I bought me a new cool wallet (Pictures 1 to 3). I just love the smell of fresh leather! After that, I was feeling tired and sleepy so didn’t bother to have lunch and just came home for a short nap.
