5 Facts About Guy Fawkes Day

Remember, remember the 5th of November. Across Great Britain people celebrate Guy Fawkes Night with bonfires and fireworks. Centuries after his failed attempt to blow up the British Parliament, Fawkes’s image remains prevalent in popular culture, thanks to films like V for Vendetta (2005).

1. Guy Fawkes was a clandestine Catholic.

Why is Guy Fawkes important? Guy (also known as Guido) Fawkes was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1570. He was raised by a Protestant family, but secretly converted to Catholicism as a young man. When he was 21, he went to fight alongside the Spanish Catholics in Flanders. During the fighting, he became an expert on explosives. This, alongside his fanatic Catholicism, is what got him recruited to the Gunpowder Plot.

2. Guy Fawkes played a key role in the Gunpowder Plot.

England became a Protestant country after the Reformation. As such, Catholics were persecuted and forced to practice their religion in secret. A wealthy Catholic named Robert Catesby decided the only solution to this discrimination was to overthrow King James I and his government. He recruited a number of other Catholics, including Fawkes, and together they plotted to plant gunpowder under the British Houses of Parliament and blow it sky-high.

The conspirators rented a cellar underneath the Houses of Parliament. Disguised as a servant named John Johnson, Fawkes began filling it with barrels of gunpowder. Once the explosives were in place and Parliament was confirmed to be sitting, ensuring the House of Commons would be full of MPs, the date for ignition was set: November 5, 1605.

3. An anonymous letter foiled the Gunpowder Plot.

Everything was going according to plan, until one of the conspirators decided to write an anonymous letter to a Catholic member of Parliament, Lord Monteagle, warning him to stay away from the Houses of Parliament on the night of November 5. Monteagle, sensing danger, showed the letter to the King, who ordered the area to be immediately searched. Thirty-six barrels of gunpowder were discovered hidden beneath piles of firewood in a storeroom below the House of Lords. Fawkes, found at the scene while armed with long fuses and dressed for his escape, was arrested.

4. Guy Fawkes was sentenced to death for his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot.

After his capture, Fawkes was sent to the infamous Tower of London, where he was tortured until he confessed and gave the names of his fellow conspirators. Soldiers were soon dispatched to Staffordshire to apprehend Catesby, the mastermind behind the plot. Catesby and his two compatriots died in a gunfight while attempting to combat the approaching soldiers.

Fawkes, meanwhile, was sentenced to death. Treason carried the harshest punishment, and he was to be hung, drawn, and quartered. On the day of his execution—January 31, 1606—Fawkes managed to wrestle free from the soldiers guarding him and jumped (or fell) from the gallows, fatally breaking his neck. The executioners were not going to let him escape his full punishment: They cut his dead body into quarters, then set the pieces of his corpse to the four corners of the kingdom as a warning to others.

5. The first Guy Fawkes Night was celebrated on November 5, 1606.

The day of the ill-fated Gunpowder Plot was decreed a day of celebration—after the attack was prevented, people lit bonfires to toast the King’s safety. November 5 was declared a day of thanksgiving, and the first official celebration took place exactly a year after the failed Gunpowder Plot, on November 5, 1606. People across Britain gathered around bonfires and burned effigies of Fawkes.

The festivities developed over the years. It became customary for children to make a life-sized dummy of Fawkes, which they would take around their neighborhood in a wheelbarrow while asking for a “penny for the Guy” to collect money to buy fireworks. Huge bonfires were built in every village and town, and a Fawkes dummy would be placed on top and set alight. The traditional brightly colored firework displays represent the explosives that were meant to ignite under the Houses of Parliament.

What Don’t You Share?

My deepest & darkest thoughts are ones that I do not share online. The thoughts that I have that may cause shock or awe or even make you feel revolted or stunned. These are the darkest depths of my psyche and my thoughts and they are mine and mine alone to hide. They are not for me to share.

I wouldn’t mind a few things seeping in and out but the vast majority of them, lovingly grown through years & years of hatred, frustration and the shit that piles on top of you on a regular basis – the stuff that makes you want to scream bloody murder and make you scheme a lot of things and plan all sorts of dark plots. But for the most part I fear what people will think.

Sometimes it is good to let that stuff all out and not let it simmer and build but I wouldn’t want 90% of it to be shared and read. It’s for my eyes only.

Arsenal 1 FC Zurich 0

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says that “winning helps winning” as his side narrowly beat Zurich to secure their place in the last 16 of the Europa League. Kieran Tierney’s thumping 20-yard drive into the bottom right corner ensured the Gunners finished top of Group A on 15 points, two clear of PSV Eindhoven. It was also the Premier League leaders’ 10th victory in 12 matches in all competitions, a habit Arteta is keen to retain with his side facing three more matches until their season breaks for the World Cup in Qatar. While Arsenal’s margin of victory could have been more significant, there were still other positives for Arteta to take.

The Spaniard was able to introduce Bukayo Saka after the break to allay any fitness concerns and he also rested several key players prior to Sunday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea. The only complaint was that Arsenal did not put the result beyond doubt during a dominant first-half display in which Eddie Nketiah twice stung the palms of Zurich goalkeeper Yanick Brecher, and Fabio Vieira saw his goalbound effort blocked from close range. That ensured a nervy finale with Adrian Guerrero’s left-foot effort ruled out for offside and Ukrainian forward Bogdan Viunnyk seeing his rasping drive just fly wide of the top left corner as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

However, the hosts held on and have now won all eight of their matches against Swiss clubs in European competition. Arsenal’s defeat at PSV had left them needing a win to guarantee their progress without the prospect of a two-legged play-off in February against one of the clubs dropping down from the Champions League. While they made a slow start, largely due to their improvised line-up containing seven changes from last Sunday’s 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest, the Premier League leaders achieved their objective.

Arteta’s side have now won all nine of their home games in all competitions this season but this performance will not be one he is likely to refer back to quickly, and he will also have been concerned to see Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu limp off less than 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute. The form of Gabriel Jesus, who has now gone eight games without a goal, is also a situation Arteta believes will alter with the Brazilian missing a glorious opportunity after the break as Brecher again came to the rescue for the visitors.

Love For Tom & Jerry & The Rest Of The Gang

Tom & Jerry is eternal; once you start watching this – usually as a kid – it seeps into your blood and your DNA. I don’t care how old I get but I will always enjoy watching Tom & Jerry. I am 46 now and I enjoy those cartoons. Heck my dad is 83, mom is 73 and my sister is 52 and they all enjoy it.

And to think this started in 1940 as series of comedy short films created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Best known for its 161 theatrical short films by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In its original run, Hanna and Barbera produced 114 Tom and Jerry shorts for MGM from 1940 to 1958. During this time, they won seven Academy Awards for Best Animated Short Film, tying for first place with Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies with the most awards in the category. After the MGM cartoon studio closed in 1957, MGM revived the series with Gene Deitch directing an additional 13 Tom and Jerry shorts for Rembrandt Films from 1961 to 1962. Tom and Jerry then became the highest-grossing animated short film series of that time, overtaking Looney Tunes. Chuck Jones then produced another 34 shorts with Sib Tower 12 Productions between 1963 and 1967. Three more shorts were produced, The Mansion Cat in 2001, The Karate Guard in 2005, and A Fundraising Adventure in 2014, making a total of 164 shorts.

A number of spin-offs have been made, including the tv series The Tom and Jerry Show (1975), The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980–1982), Tom & Jerry Kids (1990–1993), Tom and Jerry Tales (2006–2008), and The Tom and Jerry Show (2014–2021). The first feature-length film based on the series, Tom and Jerry: The Movie, was released in 1992, and 13 direct-to-video films have been produced since 2002, with a live-action/animated hybrid film released in 2021 just titled Tom & Jerry. A musical adaptation of the series, titled Tom and Jerry: Purr-Chance to Dream, debuted in Japan in 2019 in advance of Tom and Jerrys 80th anniversary.

I love all of the characters. At one time, I think this was during the early 2000s (I think so) I even had a dream that was like a movie of mixed live action & animation I was going to rescue my on again, off again girlfriend (I forget who the lead female was but she looked like a young Christina Aguilera) from the clutches of an evil alien syndicate and since I didn’t have any proof I had to get a spaceship on my own and my pets were my only crew – Tom & Jerry and the other characters were my pets! That included Nibbles and the Yellow birdie, the female cat, Spike & Tyke, Droopy, his wife & baby! The whole gang! Weird. And we went to the alien planet and she had already escaped so we picked her up and now had to escape the chasing aliens.

Six Benefits Of Adopting An Older Dog

1. Most older dogs have already been housebroken : It would be rare to find an adult dog that still needed to be housebroken, so right off the bat your new adult dog can enter your life without any of the mess or stress that comes with a puppy that isn’t housebroken.

2. Older dogs can form deep connections with you :

An older dog can bond with you just as deeply as a puppy. When you rescue an older dog it may feel like they instantly know that this fantastic new person has come to their rescue and changed their life forever. Older dogs are ready to love and are incredibly appreciative of the love you’re bringing into their life. You may notice your new adult dog only wants to be in the room that you’re in, and he’s always open to an impromptu cuddle session.

3. Adult dogs have probably been trained, and may be more receptive to new training

The amount of training your new adult dog has under his belt will vary, but no matter the amount, it’s all icing on the cake. Simple commands such as sit, and stay are most likely already in your dog’s arsenal, and if you’re lucky, your new dog will come leash-trained as well.

An older dog is also more receptive to learning new commands. Older dogs with prior training can be quicker to pick up on new command cues. With the firm bond you two share, there will be more concentration from your dog towards each one of your actions. This natural awareness will make your new dog much more receptive to learning new commands.

4. Older Dogs Have a Calmer Temperament : With age comes not only wisdom but also a more relaxed state of being for dogs. This may not true be for every dog. There will always be the ageless wonder who never wants to stop playing. For most dogs though, the older they get, the less exercise they need and the less energetic they are throughout the day. For seniors living a more relaxed lifestyle, adult dogs can make the perfect companions.

5. Older dogs have better manners than younger pups :  Dogs with calmer temperaments will often have better manners than youthful, more excitable dogs. When the UPS truck rolls up, an older adult dog may give it a sideways glance, rather than jump off the couch barking at the new intruder. Older dogs often have the benefit of being socialized previously with both other dogs and with other humans, making them more likely to have positive interactions in the future. Older dogs have also likely gone through some kind of obedience training, which should help make them more well-mannered.

6. You can bond with the dog you’ve always wanted : So, you’ve always wanted a purebred husky puppy but just cannot afford one. Well, guess what, an adult husky is sitting in a shelter somewhere right now waiting for you to come to adopt him or her. When adopting an older dog, you know in advance what to expect from their behavior, rather than rolling the dice with a younger dog without a fully developed personality. When you’re adopting an older dog, you also have the advantage of knowing their entire medical history in advance. Vaccinations have been taken care of, and vet trips should be less frequent than if you adopted a puppy.

Seven Weird & Strange Things That Happened In Uttar Pradesh

1. Couple marries after dating for two years. Gets divorced in under 12 hours.

In a very weird twist of things, a couple hailing from UP’s Hamirpur district got married to each other after going through a lot of ups and downs. However, even though they had been together for the last two years, their ‘happily forever’ ended in under 12 hours and they filed for divorce.

2. Man gets challenged to eat 50 eggs for Rs 2,000. Dies after the 42nd egg.

This one is sad yet extremely bizarre! A man from UP’s Jaunpur district got involved in an argument with a friend over how many eggs he can eat and they settled the number at 50 eggs. They bet Rs 2,000 on the same, but the man collapsed after consuming the 42nd egg. The hospital stated ‘overeating’ as the cause of his death.

3. Man gets challaned for not wearing a helmet… INSIDE A CAR!

Nothing can be more bizarre than the UP police fining a man for driving a car without wearing a helmet. A CAR! Hailing from Hamirput district, the man received an e-challan on his mobile for the same. The e-challan said that he had been fined by the authorities for not wearing a helmet while driving his four-wheeler vehicle.

4. Villagers mistake a saffron-painted toilet for a temple. Start praying.

If it gets out of hand, religion can make people do extremely unusual things. Just like when the people of Maudaha in Hamirpur district started praying to a public toilet, just because it was painted saffron. Not just this, this misinformed act went on for a whole year.

5. Drunk groom does the naagin dance. Bride refuses to marry him.

Everyone wants to have a presentable life partner and this bride from Mailani area of Lakhimpur Kheri, Bairely, didn’t want to settle. After witnessing her groom doing the naagin dance in a completely inebriated state, she flat out refused to get married to him.

6. Grandfather teaches grandkids “A for alcohol, B for beedi.” Makes them drink and smoke.

Children learn what their elders teach them but this grandfather from UP’s Bahadarpur area is teaching his grandchildren all the wrong things – things kids are supposed to be kept away from. In a video that surfaced online last year, the old man was seen giving out beedis and alcohol to minors, and telling them it was “nothing but juice.”

7. Men break into a beer shop. Party first before running away with more bottles.

A bunch of men broke into a liquor store in Kotwali to steal, but ended up partying inside the shop by drinking from the bottles and cans for hours. They ended their party by stealing 26 crates of beer. Even then, they weren’t done with their shenanigans and went on to rob the chambers of five lawyers.

A Look Back At The Month That Was : October 2022

  • Once again I have not gone out of the apartment the entire month. Aided in that was the fact that our building elevator had to get repaired and some parts needed to be replaced. This took 2 weeks and with my health issues, I did not want to walk up and down the 7 set of stairs. We were dependent on the young kids next door who offered to run up and down to get some supplies for us. We rewarded them with some sweets and chocolate.
  • Work has been somewhat hectic and as soon as Monday ends, I am ready for the weekend. I am tired and fed up of these multiple back to back training batches mainly due to the MIS work that comes along with it, increased 10 fold this year.
  • Having said that I did manage to get 2 days leave and then we immediately had, after a single day back at work, a 3 day weekend. Unfortunately I had plans on going out during that time but the elevator wasn’t fixed by then.
  • Last month I had made plans to watch Automan, Miss Marvel & She-Hulk but I still haven’t gotten round to doing that yet. I am on season 14 of CSI and with Season 3 of Star Trek : Lower Decks having ended, Star Trek Prodigy has just returned with the second part of their debut season.
  • It has now been 8 months since I had any alcohol and I miss it. I had a couple of beers in February but since then I haven’t been out and since I don’t have any stock at home nor can I order in, I have been dry as Gujarat!

Random Things Found On My Bed

Due to a lack of table space or bedside table/drawer space, I have bunch of stuff that I place on my bed during the day time and when I get into bed, I keep them on my big computer chair. This includes the following:

  • The cases for my phone and earpods – why because I have charges and spare ear pieces in them.
  • The case for my digital phone – same reason
  • A bottle of water for hydration
  • my inhaler and a space inhaler
  • bills that I must pay usually medicine or groceries and they keep changing once I have paid them
  • a strip of lozenges
  • dust wipes for my laptop, phone & spectacles
  • Vicks inhaler
  • a deodorant spray
  • a back scratcher

All this because I don’t have much space available. I wish I could get a new table in here. Or maybe a small bedside table. Things would be a lot more organized.
